UK e-scooter owners, what's your experience of using them in public?

Where do you use them and how often have you had problems regarding legislation, or lack of it?

I use them pretty much everyday for uni and I have no problems. I drive past some police cars and they take no notice. Just don’t be an idiot on them, like any other mode of transportation.

I know that Essex police have confiscated hundreds of them, because they're illegal for use on public roads. There's no grey area or lack of legislation.

I also know that Essex plod seem to turn a blind eye to a lot of them around Essex Uni in Colchester. I think perhaps they’re more focussed on troublesome areas or town/city centres though rather than students flashing around the campus area and too and from non campus accommodation.

Yeah I know police in general get a bad rep on social media but I've always found Essex to be pretty reasonable. Nipping around a campus, they're not gonna care. The ones they're taking off people are being sped around town centres or weaving in and out of traffic, so they're taken away before someone gets properly hurt.

They are everywhere. I don't use one myself, someone at my work uses one to get across town every day to work though, said he's literally rode passed police and they aren't remotely interested. He doesn't look like a yob though, he looks like someone using it as transport to work, so maybe they just aren't that bothered. I ride a bike to and from work myself, and I must see at a minimum 5 of them on my trip down the cycle tracks... they are everywhere. I remember a single picture of our town police, stood by about 7/8 scooters, saying how they'd done a big crack down and confiscated loads of scooters over the course of 24 hours... and couldn't help but think I've literally seen more scooters than their entire haul, in a single 30 minute bike ride.... what on earth where they doing for 24 hours? --- At this point, I just say legislate them. The main problem I have with them ride now, isn't the scooters themselves, but the types of people on average that are happy to use a known illegal form of transport giving them a bad name. make them legal, rentable with an app, like they are in the US, or even legal private owned... like a generic electric bike that anyone can buy! They make sense, they are cheap, green, personal transport. Reduce traffic. Save people money... Like... what's not to love!

London alone in 2021 confiscated 4,001 https://www.scootered.co.uk/blog/policing-of-electric-scooters-in-uk.html

London has around 8,900,000 people. They confiscated 11 scooters a day for a year... My town has 90,000 people, and their 24 hour crackdown resulted in 7 scooters being confiscated! Your example is even worse than mine! I could confiscate more scooters in London, by simply standing still on a street corner.

> London has around 8,900,000 people And about 10% more on any workday!

Here’s a thing, not everyone in London owns a e-scooter.

here's the thing, I never said or implied they did. I was pointing out, that if there's over 100 times the number of people, and they are only managing 4 more scooters in a day... the percentages are far worse for the London police. Weren't you able to figure that very simple implication out? Ooops!

I hired one of the tier scooters in York once. I’d never ridden one before that. It was quite expensive because you had to pay per minute of use.

My co worker had his confiscated by the police.

Lack of legislation? It’s very simply legislation - you can’t use a private e-scooter on public land be that road, pavement or any public space. If you get caught you will more than likely have your scooter confiscated.
