What's the most 'middle class' thing you own?

Mines a pestle and mortar after getting sucked into what Jamie Oliver listed as an essential kitchen item. I've used it once in three years.

Does a proper rice cooker count? Full digital multi mode job. Honestly, I can get on with other bits whilst it cooks away, perfect rice every time.

manxlancs123@reddit

Every Tom, Dick, and Harry has one in China, but yeah, they do seem to have an aura of semi poshness in the UK. Absolutely essential to stop fucking around with boiling rice in the pan. Perfect rice every time. I thoroughly recommend a rice cooker.

I have a rice cooker but half the time I just make it in a pan. I don't really see what step the rice cooker cuts out, apart from the button flicking to warm halfway through. You still have to do all the washing and measuring. Does free up a ring on the hob though.
View on Reddit #12448488

manxlancs123@reddit

The main thing it cuts out is the monitoring of the rice in the pan and the not knowing if it’s done properly or not. Maybe I’m just shit at cooking and don’t know what I’m doing when I make it in the pan. It’s either underdone or stodgy and overdone. It’s the convenience of just setting it to go and forgetting about it until it beeps. For me, rice, which is essentially a sideshow, causes me more trouble than the main part of the meal. For what it’s worth, no Chinese person would ever dream of making boiled rice in a pan. I think they’re onto something.

I lived in China. My ayi was like where the fuck is your rice cooker. That's why I have one. In case you are ever sans cooker, 1.5 cups boiling water to every cup of rice. Lid on, simmer on the lowest heat possible for 15 mins, leave without removing the lid for 15. Possibly different for brown rice.

terryjuicelawson@reddit

I think the fancy ones are, rather than the ones that just click on and off. You get displays which can do every variety of rice. I really like mine as it takes zero thought, meanwhile others are faffing about with timing things, tea towels, checking for bubbles and the rice still isn't great. Or worse just boiling it like pasta and draining it in the sink.

Absolutely, couldn’t agree more. One of the many impulse kitchen buys that I actually get good use out of unlike all the other gadgets that are gathering dust at the back of a cupboard somewhere.

Yikes. The point of a ricer is that each potato cell is squished once to avoid the damage to the cell walls that makes mash gummy/releases the water that got soaked up during cooking. This is the opposite of that.

Yeah but that’s not pesto it’s ‘pesto’ or ‘pesto sauce’ or whatever. It’s also not THAT widely available. You can only get sacla easily where I live and you’re looking at £3-3.50 sort of range. I currently live in a pretty deprived part of wales.

It is what people are talking about when they say pesto, the little jars. They do it in my local Tesco Express, in Aldi, Lidl, Co-op. I'd be surprised it was £3.50 even in my grotty little corner shop but they still do it. Green and red!

Not if you do it Jamie Oliver's way and just use up all the stuff you have in your kitchen. Just cut some leaves from your fresh basil plants, a glug of that olive oil you bought on holiday in Tuscany, grate some of that cave aged Parmagiano Romano that's sitting in your fridge, and toast the pine nuts in your cupboard on the Aga. That way it's free.

View on Reddit #12417884

Unfair_Original_2536@reddit

You just put beans in and it grinds them and dispenses a shot or double shot of espresso. The milk steamer has a separate knob and outlet. It's a Delonghi Magnifica, I'm looking forward to that guy telling me that I'm wrong and don't actually like the coffee it spots out.

View on Reddit #12412029

AussieHxC@reddit

Nope. Shit beans are shit beans, there's no saving them and getting anything tasty out of them. I'd say grinder comes second as it provides consistency and allows you to actually apply different methods. Methods is last. They definitely make the difference between good and great but overall they have the least effect compared to the others.
View on Reddit #12411218

blanketsberg@reddit

Haha dude, you need to join r/espressocirclejerk if you want to gatekeep like that. I had a bean to cup for years and loved it for its ease and consistency. I upgraded to a "proper" (semiautomatic) espresso machine a few years back because I *really* got into coffee, but there is a definite place for bean to cup. It might not make a café-quality espresso, but it's certainly not shit coffee. In fact, it's much easier to make shit coffee from a semiautomatic machine than a fully automatic bean to cup (source: me).

View on Reddit #12442191

HighKiteSoaring@reddit

Not sure where that idea comes from Steak dinners, roast meals, meats, cheeses, it's all completely affordable. Even people in lower Incomes can eat like kings from the middle-ages from time to time Sure, it's cheaper to eat beans on toast or rice. But you don't have to eat unhealthily. The real issue is where people just say fuck it and eat junk food because they're too lazy to cook anything

You pay a hefty premium with a bean to cup machine for just moving the coffee, water and milk around. Go for something with more manual elements and you save a lot. Also it's a US fussed sub and they do earn about 1.5x-2x what we do in the UK

Lots, buts it is true that there's diminishing returns the higher you go. It's a hobby for a reason. Here is a [decent](https://decentespresso.com/overview) example of one fancy boi espresso machine. It's an especially geeky version with lots of tech built into it. Essentially you're getting more control and consistency over the entire system. Getting the best from your coffee is hard, especially with modern varieties and lighter roasts. There's also the grinder issue too by that point though. Most folk who've invested in espresso have probably also spent several hundred or more on a good coffee grinder. It's a whole other story with essentially the same aims
View on Reddit #12412878

CabinetOk4838@reddit

This is true for all hobbies. There’s always commercial version of the kit involved in a hobby. I do amateur radio. You can spend many many thousands on gear, or you can pick up two cheap handhelds for peanuts and still talk to your mate. So why spend thousands? Because: better, further, clearer, whatever… it’s a hobby. It’s for enjoyment. Back to coffee: same deal. We can all buy and use cheap coffee, but those who care will spend their money and enjoy it “more”. Eventually, though, in any hobby there’s no improvement to be made no matter what you spend.

View on Reddit #12424794

Which is easier said than done, at least consistently. It's true that as you spend more the returns diminish. But in general, the answer is: better build quality, reliability, often faster heat up times, dual boilers/thermoblocks more common (which allow you to make espresso and steam milk simultaneously), customisable user interfaces etc. Not necessary at all, but these features are a luxury many are willing to pay for.

I’m going to hard disagree on this one. I don’t think middle classes would as a rule be paying 1000 on a coffee machine at all. I think you’re wildly overestimating the middle class bracket. The one you linked feels more like some sort of person in finance that lives alone would buy. Looks flashy, is slower and less practical but works well. Depends on how much they love coffee perhaps if it’s their thing they might get a fully automated one for a grand but most will be 359-600 range for a good quality machine that’s easy to use.

It's made over 10k espresso shots and still going strong, even after half a wooden clothes peg accidentally got into the bean hopper and wormed its way into the mechanism. Costs about £25/month to run in beans and filters (hard water area) and that's around 4 double shots a day and 3 cups of foamy milk (I'm excluding the cost of the milk!)

Aneurin Bevan reportedly was criticised for enjoying lobster and champagne and replied "only the best for the working class." The idea that working class people should only like basic things is a recent concept arising from middle class people seeking to appear working class without having to actually give up any capital.

Ah, just claimed my Bean-to-cup too. I guess the real middle class thing is when you get obsessed with having a separate grinder, tamping it by hand and having a lever-pulled machine.
View on Reddit #12411405

I have a separate grinder because of lack of counter space and also it's more versatile - you can use said ground coffee in a V60. No espresso machine here though (so a less expensive grinder that isn't required to do espresso grind).

I’ve not used all the Sage ones but let’s just say this. Pret use bean to cup machines that cost 1000’s and their coffee is among the worst on the high street. If 1000’s can’t automate a decent coffee then the Jura and delonghi ones that cost a lot less have no chance. You can’t automate something that requires a skill to make. Not yet anyway. And sorry but you’re not a coffee snob if you own a bean to cup machine.

View on Reddit #12409028

ooooomikeooooo@reddit

The reason bean to cup machines aren't good is because there is no control. Every bag of beans you get are different and require a different grind size. It even changes if you keep a bag for a while. A bean to cup machine can't control the grind precisely enough to account for that variability. A bean to cup can make a good cup of coffee, if you are lucky and the grind size/temp/brew time line up but really you are just not likely to get the best out of the beans.

You are quite correct. And if you go to TK Maxx, you can often find some really nice Italian compatible cartridges at a significant discount. Next step up is probably a stove-top “[Moka pot](https://www.seriouseats.com/best-moka-pots-7570691)” rather than blowing a grand on a fancy bean-to-cup machine. As the above review says, the Bialetti ones are hard to beat. I recently moved from my old aluminium one to a stainless steel one, and it’s brilliant. And looks lovely in the kitchen. And - one last tip - if you’re buying supermarket ready ground coffee for your new moka pot, it’s really hard to beat Lavazza Qualita Rossa, for sensible money. Illy is nice, but twice the price.

Place out of direct light and ensure no draught. After a while the stone will start growing a root, when it’s about 4 cm long you can pot it up, it’ll grow a shoot. That depends. Are they - a track car - inherited - something you justified as an investment - restored - a newish Volkswagen camper van or motorhome Or - a spare parts car to keep your other identical car working - something you got from a customer at the garage you work at that’s needs some bits fixing so you can flip it - a work van that work force you to take home - an early 90s campervan with moss on it.

I guess you could call the Puma a track car, but it was only £500. There's a modified 1990 Range Rover for driving in the mud, a 15 year old convertable Merc as my daily driver (nothing gets the ladies' attention like an old fat man in a drop-top) and a Tiguan that my wife drives. At any given time at least one of them will require work :-)

My wife and I had been discussing using national trust as stops on long journeys as it’s more chill when you have a baby with you. Anyway, seeing that chap made us think that NT properties could basically be middle class motorway services if they had rapid electric car chargers.

I think it falls under the social/leisure umbrella of class rather than financial. Reading novels and going to the theatre and museums are actually very cheap or even free, but considered middle class. Going to the pub or a football game are considered working class but are quite expensive. Just goes to show the whole concept of class is really silly these days, yet our country is still quite obsessed with it.

View on Reddit #12440155

Steppy20@reddit

Being taught to read, and having a passion to read books in your free time are very different. I think that in general reading books is falling out of favour due to the alternative of smart phones. Even long after TVs were popular it wasn't as convenient as being able to whip something out of your pocket and lay around anywhere at home to watch something. You also had to contend with utter shite on TV the majority of the time and the scheduling was determined for you. I primarily watch YouTube or play video games for my entertainment. However I'll still lay in bed when it's dreary outside, stick some music on, and read. That's the bit which is key to this whole debate.

Working class culture used to celebrate reading and lifelong self education was seen not as pretentious but as something worth spending your time on. My grandparents left school at 14 and always read and talked about books - learning for its own sake and seeking out new experiences were good things. They wanted their children and grandchildren to have opportunities they didn't have and they knew knowledge and thinking for yourself were the keys to that. At some point the "getting above yourself" voices have become much more prominent and have been allowed to take over the cultural mainstream. This is a politics free zone so I'll just suggest that we should all think carefully about why that might be and who it benefits.

I think owning them is upper class. Middle class are more like awkward not knowing if they should try to be friendly or let them get on with it, worrying about if they should offer them a cup of tea etc. There’s often questions about how to behave with tradespeople on r/askuk.

I carb loaded for a middle distance triathlon with fruit juice last year. Admittedly all shop bought so probably not as healthy as home made stuff, but man... the effect that two or three days of 5l of fruit juice had on my digestive system.... Hate to think about a month of that 😅
View on Reddit #12406983

limegreenbunny@reddit

I did it primarily because I was desperate to try to reduce the number of migraines I was getting, and I’d been told that a juice fast had helped a friend of mine. I didn’t notice any digestive changes that I remember, fortunately! Psychologically it was bloody hard though; I was constantly thinking of food. Spent hours scrubbing the stupid juicer clean each day too.

I got gifted a granite pestle and mortar - a Jamie Oliver one in fact - and it's possibly been the gift I've ever used most outside of clothes. Homemade spice mixtures galore, and you can buy the fresh, ungrounded spices and do it yourself for a fresher taste, same goes with herbs. I can make my own pesto with it, and it's also useful for grinding up decarbed weed to make edibles and certain pills to extract fun ingredients from. I use it several times a week. It's extremely middle class, so yeah, that too for me.

\>Mines a pestle and mortar after getting sucked into what Jamie Oliver listed as an essential kitchen item. I've used it once in three years. This is a frequent issue I have with reddit, the definition of "Working Class" and "Middle Class" is so odd. If you own a bag from waitrose or a pestel and morter you're "Middle Class"\~ But if you own a company that employs people, and you drink down the pub you're "Working Class"

Are you planning on selling it? I have one that I know I am not going to sell, so I just wear it knowing it's losing value. If I had kept it pristine it would be worth way more than what I paid for it, but well... fuckit.

I left all the documents and receipts when I moved out of my flat with my ex. So it's basically worth nothing. I pulled off one of the chrono buttons opening a bottle of beer one night. I bought a fruit straining set this year for making preserves. The first time I used it I was worried that I'd become a bit "too middle class" and then I realised that I was making it on my kitchen island whilst listening to Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat being played from Spotify on my Samsung fridge. So pick any from that list 😂

My kitchen is full of middle-class shit. I liberated most of it from various places of employment(chef). But I have been gifted a few ridiculous things like a camembert roasting dish and a wine keeper thing that blasts gas into your wine bottle so it doesn't get oxygenated.
