What do people who have been raised in England do to note Bonfire Night?

When I was a kid, we used to go collecting scrap wood for weeks before the night, to make our own bonfire in the field out back. We also made a Guy out of old clothes, and balled up newspaper. We would then cart the guy around the neighbourhood shouting "penny for the guy" and people would give us money. This money was used to buy fireworks. On the night one of the dads would be in charge of lighting the bonfire, and setting off the fireworks. But everyone was involved. Everyone made food to share, like corned beef hash, and bonfire toffee. Each kid would also wrap a potato in tinfoil and place it in the embers of the dying bonfire. It was supposed to bake it but in reality it just charred the outside, whilst the inside was raw. Nowadays people don't have their own bonfires, for obvious safety reasons. So I'd say taking them to an organised bonfire with a fireworks display, is the closest you'll get to authentic bonfire night experience. You can still make bonfire toffee at home though.
