Is losing weight something to be proud of?

I went from 120 to 83kg I dont feel any different. Ppl still treat me horribly. I have to spend shitloads on new clothes... Is this a gimmick by society? Cause I dont get it

That's absolutely brilliant! You should be immensely proud of yourself. I'm at 107kg and want to get to where you are. Did a 3 mile walk this morning and ordered an exercise bike to see me through the winter at walking/riding round here won't be great.

I was 97kg at the start of the year, I’m now 80kg. I have a peloton and walk daily and eat a mostly veggie diet. My problem was it didn’t happen fast enough in the past and I would give up. but I’ve actually clung more to my fitness and it’s kept me going. My heart rate has dropped, my respiratory rate has improved, my cardio fitness is at a place I could never have dreamed! I found a love of walking and as a result my weight and shape has changed. Good luck with it and allow yourself treats, I still eat chocolate everyday just a lot less than I used to!

That's brilliant! I do walk a fair bit but not as much as a few years ago. Chocolate is my biggest weakness!!! I think my diet is okay (ish), I definitely need to bulk meals out with more veg to try and stop the snacking urges. Been having porridge for breakfast and soup for lunch so I've cut out a lot of bread too. What's the best tip you have?

Bread was a big one for me, also have porridge for breakfast. I’m not sure I have tips, I drink at least two litres of water per day, my husband and I started using hello fresh to save money on food shopping and I think having regulated portion sizes really helped. I try not to deny myself anything, if I have a day off and eat more or indulge, I just make sure it’s not all the time and I don’t punish myself for it with negative thoughts. Just refresh the next day and start again being good. I’ve hit a plateau and have weighed the same for nearly three months now which was getting me down, but thankfully I picked up the tape measure and discovered I’ve lost an inch or two off my hips and waist and my bra strap size. So feel a bit better about it!

Funnily enough when I started running and eventually training for triathlons, my coworkers (and even friends) would discourage it, saying my knees would be shot by 40 years old if I carried on. None of them did any exercise.

Is there any studies to back that up? I'm a marathon runner and one of my good friends is an orthopeadic surgeon. He is of the opinion that long distance running fucks up your knees, and says all the young patients he sees are runners

There are studies that back this up but like others have commented there’s a lot of factors involved. Young people are stupid and arrogant about their health; they’ll exercise through injuries, refuse to seek medical aid etc etc all the bad stuff, none of the good and then be surprised when they’re fooked by middle age.

Problem is though when the average person starts to run they don't have strong knees, so instead just destroy their knees (especially at the start). Strength and conditioning is really important for stuff like running, but due to running being the cheapest form of exercise most people just run and batter themselves (me included).

Obese people should also lose weight first, then take up jogging. Jogging can mess up your joints if you are too heavy for them to be able to take the impact of each stride.

Football killed my knees in a way that running, cycling and kickboxing never did. I think it’s the stop-start and twisting of changing directions. I had to stop playing because of it whereas I had no problems doing anything else.

The knee thing comes from a range of things like poor recovery, poor form, poor shoes. There's a million reasons but ultimately if you do any repetitive motion it runs the risk of wearing out the joint regardless of the sport.

Running over a long period of time isn’t good for your knees. Doing it whilst you’re young, for ten years or so isn’t necessarily going to cause any issues unless you are doing it improperly or are genetically predisposed to developing problems such as arthritis. But doing it long-term will damage your knees.

I made a similar comment elsewhere, but how is it that some people are able to do extreme distances without accruing any injuries? I.e. [Pat Farmer](https://www.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/14irovd/in_2011_pat_farmer_ran_from_the_north_pole_to_the/) \- ran 21,000km over 10 month from North to South Pole. He's in his 60s now and still going strong - currently running a lap of Australia. Interestingly in an interview, he claimed to have never really had any injuries!

My uncle’s in his 60s and still does Iron Man races. However, after he’s done them he’s usually crippled for a few weeks because he has arthritis. He then recovers and does another one. Just because people can still run marathons doesn’t mean they don’t have any issues. For some people it’s just worth it.

Give it time. They will strengthen. This happens to me every time i start up running again. The back pain is a result of my lower back posture being pulled out of position due to my overweight belly, but as I lose weight and improve my running position, that goes away.

As others have said this is mostly bollocks. Saying that triathlons are extreme and you should take extra precautions with your health. Conditioning training for your joints, diet and recovery are vital. A yoga session every so often would be a good thing.

Even the triathlons seem paltry compared to some people out there - I was reading about [Pat Farmer](https://www.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/14irovd/in_2011_pat_farmer_ran_from_the_north_pole_to_the/) who ran \~21,000km over 10 months, starting at the north pole and ending at the south pole. even at 60 something years old, he is running a lap of Australia currently. Either some people are built differently or they've conditioned their joints over a long and healthy life!

I went from 125kg to 99kg and TBH I noticed how quickly I acclimatised to feeling like a sack of shit at 99kg. I think sometimes our weight is a cover-up for other personal issues. The weight didn't stay off, I went up to 160kg but am down to 145kg at present.

hmm though the OP did not mention who is specifically treated them horribly, we can only assume. lets say its people he is close with or knows OP, the treatment that he gets is most likely out of habit by them. OP probably trained them to treat him like that so it will take time until he gets treated differently. however we do not know how people respond to him that never met him. we also may need to consider his behavior that may have others dislike him.

I agree but sometimes it's difficult to see. My parents kept calling me obese because I have a large chest despite being underweight. It drove me to developing body dysmorphia and eventually an eating disorder. I genuinely believed I was fat, I looked into the mirror and saw fat. I didn't even think to question them so I didn't realize there was anything I should be changing. Had a similar experience with an ex best friend and it took a long time for it to actually click that they were bad for me.

I don't think they mean it in a bad way. The hardest thing to do is identify when you're around people who don't like you and are willing to tear you down. But once you're able to identify it, then it's a choice you make. If you choose to stay and make no changes, you are in a way part of the problem. It's the hardest thing to go through, because usually you've attracted a large group of people who do this. And you have to actively choose to cut people out and be alone and rebuild. It sucks. I remember I used to come across this phase people treat you the way you allow them. And it pissed me off, because people don't ask to be mistreated. It wasn't until I got older that I realised actually, what they meant was you choose to stay around those people and engage with them. For people who figured this out the hard way, they're either able to approach it with empathy when others go through it. Or they can't, they will say things like you're part of the problem. They won't expand on it, since some of them can't and for some of them it's a way of distancing themselves from that shitty past. Hopefully OP isn't going through this issue. Since a lot of people aren't able to cut people out and rebuild, because they're scared of being alone.

Never mind the fact that it’s everyone’s individual responsibility not to treat people like shit, even if for some reason people think they ‘deserve’ it. I had this done to me after talking about my experience as a child dealing with abuse at home and at school. Some chucklefuck/troll insisted that if everyone was a dick to me at the same time then the problem must have been me. It shouldn't have got to me but I do think about it from time to time. It's not you, it is actually a phenomenon that happens in families, and also wider society blaming minorities. It's when people need someone else to blame so they don't have to be accountable for themselves in some way. In places where blame is used as a coping mechanism it becomes a matter of "survival" to have someone or something to blame, kind of like a sacrifice. Instead of being understanding, blame is used. NHS treatment is free at point of use, but don't underestimate the other costs of being ill - especially lost wages from time off work My mum's having a knee replacement. Surgergy and physio won't cost her a penny (which I'm eternally grateful for) but it's still going to bugger her financially

You should lose weight for yourself, not anybody else. If you're proud of yourself, which you should be as losing that much is a hell of an achievement which many fail at, that's all that matters. Realistically weight isn't everything, people do on average get treated worse when they're larger but when you're slim you're not suddenly receiving compliments left, right and center. The only difference is the lack of negative comments, which for some people is good enough. What's also not to be forgotten is that skinny does not mean beautiful, there are plenty of dog ugly slim men and women. If the only you have going for you is the fact that you're not fat then you just don't have much going for you at all.

As someone that regularly fluctuates in weight anywhere from 170-220lbs context is massively important. I’m around 190 at the moment and I would say around the healthiest I’ve ever been so I’m proud of how I’m treating my body. If you’ve had to lose weight for health reasons or were generally unhappy with your ability to do physical activities and losing weight has improved your well being then you should be damn proud of yourself. But if your losing weight simply for validation from others that’s a bumpy road to go down.

It requires commitment and consistency and I’ve relapsed a lot over the years, if it was easy everyone would do it. Working out and eating healthy are both activities that can be incredibly repetitive or boring so you almost have to fall in love with the process as cliché as that sounds. I've never been thin in my life and, being a latina woman, this has been an issue for my family a lot more than for me, and I grew up being basically bullied and told I'd die alone because no man will ever want a fat chick. These comments always hurt me a lot more than just the way my body looks. I don't hate my body, I don't think I'm gross or whatever else people like to call chunky women. I look fine, I've always been healthy, but for some reason everyone around me seems offended by the fact that I don't hate myself. I lost some weight recently, mostly because my PCOS is finally being dealt with after years of going undiagnosed. I don't feel better or worse or more valuable as a person, I'm still the same. My family continues to blame me for not having a husband and kids yet but now it's not my weight anymore, it's any other thing they can pick at. I think I'm pretty, my body looks fine, if somebody doesn't agree then that's their prerogative but I also don't care lol. It's just weird how much people act like having a specific body type will fix your entire life. We're all different and we all deserve to be treated as human beings, idk why that's so hard to understand for some.

It is definitely something to be proud of, it's an actual proof of you achieving something that you wanted, done by yourself. What I think you don't realise you've proven to yourself that you have what it takes to overcome yourself. That being said, by no means should you be resting on your laurels, rather accept your newly discovered powers and put them to good use. Do you feel better physically? When I lost weight it completely got rid of my back pain and made walking/running/all physical tasks easier. Also feel better eating a more nutritious diet and not often feeling stuffed/sluggish. Even if that isn't the case for you, you've lowered your risk of numerous health problems for the future. Change in looks is just a bonus (if it's something you care about), health and wellbeing is what it's about.

It often makes a big difference to how you’re treated by strangers - they’re more likely to give the benefit of the doubt and are often significantly more pleasant and helpful. There’s research on the positive impacts on job hunting. I can’t say I’d expect changes in behaviour from anyone who actually knows you though. Weight loss is so gradual too that eg. most colleagues probably haven’t even consciously noticed you lost weight if they’ve seen you frequently.

Congrats, great achievement! I will say though, it depends on other factors. A 4'8 girl weighing 83kg is obviously very different to a 6'0 guy who weights 83kg. I noticed the biggest difference in my looks treatment was when I went from like 75kg to 65kg because thats when I went from slightly chubby to really lean with a nice jawline.

No one feels that crappy after losing all that weight. Overeating is selfharm. It's also similar to opioid addiction in its way (though without the withdrawal). Find exercise you love doing and just make sure everything you eat is very healthy. I'm middle-aged and disabled and I was able to lose a whole bunch of weight (I got an exercise bike). If I can do it, you can. Start having respect for your body and you'll see how respect works... It's spreads....it's contagious.

And I tell you now it wasn't easy so I don't expect your weight loss journey to have been easy either. It's something to be proud of. What did you do to achieve it? You lost over a quarter of your bodymass. Everything must feel better, especially in physical movement! But remember you didn't do this for anyone else you did it for you. Even at 120 they would have to add parachutes to slow users down so there is benefit to less! There are many rides and devices which require you to be sub 100 and there’s a cool human powered air ship in France which requires you to be around 70. Also if you want to get into climbing now it possible.

The health effects of obesity are similar to the health effects of smoking in that they become most apparent after decades. If you smoke regularly you won’t get cancer after a just a year or two (I.e in your 20s) and generally won’t feel that different. Its the long term that matters (middle aged). It’s the same for being obese. You’ve done something that will be good for your future, not the present. Healthy living mainly isn’t about feeling good now but feeling better when your older. Yes it is. Being overweight is extremely detrimental to your health. A sedentary lifestyle and a poor diet of high sugar/carbs and highly processed food is as bad as smoking. I dunno, I had very similar weight loss (120 down to 80) and felt that I was getting way more positive interactions and feeling the female gaze pointed in my direction more frequently. But, whatever size you are, you're still you. Personally I just enjoyed the buzz of feeling more energetic, lighter on my feet and healthier overall. I also noticed my shoes lasted a lot longer!

You absolutely will feel different, it’s just because you gradually lost the weight over the course of months/years, so you haven’t noticed a difference. If you suddenly gained all the weight back, you’d definitely notice how much worse you felt at that weight. Went from 95 to 85kg myself over the past couple of months, lost the fairly quickly and could easily tell the difference. I look better, I feel better, people don’t treat me any differently but that’s not why I lost weight anyway.

I felt like that after I went from 20 stone to 14 stone. All I could see was the loose skin which provided a new insecurity. I still had what I call my “fat kid mentality” which was a constant anxiety, defensiveness and self-loathing from being treated badly by other people for being big. I was led to believe that losing weight would fix all my mental health problems and was angry when it didn’t. I started to realise over time that losing the weight allowed me to start actually addressing my mental health issues because that literal physical barrier (still being big) was gone. I agree that society paints losing weight as a quick fix to all life’s problems but in actuality it’s a springboard to healing yourself completely. It takes time, don’t give up hope :)

Don't know if this has already been said, but as someone whose weight constantly changes drastically over short periods of time, I never notice the weight loss, I only notice the pains & discomforts that come with gaining weight. Losing weight isn't so much about feeling better in any specific regard, you kind of do, it's more about not feeling physically shitty.

I went from 165kg to 87Kg (with 8kg to go to goal weight) I do think people treat me better but that could just be because I have gained some confidence and now lack the anxiety of 'everyone is laughing at me bc I'm fat'. Making me better at social situations. My physical and metal health is SO much better than before making everything easier day to day. I'm just happier and healthier in general and never want to go back. Yes, I've also spent a lot of money on new clothes (even lost a shoe size) so that's a downside I guess but also nice to actually wear something I like and feel good in. I don't know what you were expecting tbh. People are not going to automatically like you bc you are a not fat. It could be any number of reasons why people treat you horribly. But if people treat you the same now as they did before then its probably not bc of your weight. Try improving other aspects of yourself.

Coming from someone who was 19 stone, went to 12 stone then 21st then now at 18 stone over the last 6 years here is what I've learnt: When I lost the weight the first time I thought it would make everything good again. In reality it didn't, as its you mindset and mental wellbeing which is just as important and losing weight isn't that magic thing which society seems to project onto people who are heavy. Weight doesn't mean fitness. May sound weird but I'm way fitter at most things (except running) at 18 stone as I'm actually fuelling my body, going to the gym and doing lots of cycling and not being exhausted due to starving myself. Bets thing is to just try and be happy in your own skin which is hard but I've found just thinking I don't give a fuck what people think has helped. Means I'm now happy with my body, so actually treat it well which results in getting fitter and weight loss as a result.

This! Your weight will fluctuate, its normal so it can actually be quite damaging to some to be praised for a huge weightloss and then feel shame when they gain some back. Only do this for yourself, not for what others may think or say. If you feel better in yourself now you have lost the weight then great, use that. Use it as a lifestyle change and engage in more positive behaviours too that may help you keep it up like other active hobbies e.g. hiking, walks, sport etc. Whatever you felt uncomfortable or unable to do before when you were heavier. But ultimately you have just as much worth no matter your size, not everyone is healthy and it's not always our fault, no matter what society would have us belive. There are also worst faults than being fat.

You're not the only one who feels this way. The people who genuinely feel better after they lost weight, are able to do so because confidence was their main issue. They were sociable and otherwise fine. Losing weight helped with their confidence so they feel better for it. For others weight is one of the issues they need to work on, the actual issues they have stem from other things. They might think losing weight will fix everything, but if you've always had social anxiety and struggle to connect with people. Losing weight, just changes how you look. It doesn't change your other issues. What sort of things were you hoping weight loss would bring you? It's good to identify the things you expected from it, then figure out how you can work on getting those things since clearly they weren't linked to weight loss in your particular case.

I compete in strength sports so have a decent amount of muscle mass and weigh about 95kg and even at that weight and body composition I feel less healthy and energised than I did sitting around 80-85kg. Unless you're very tall or very muscular I'd have thought life at 120kg would be hellish....

Well you've done well to take care of yourself and your health (assuming you lost weight with a healthy diet). Changing habits is hard to do, so congratulations on that. If you really don't feel better, you should consider your diet and other habits and how those things make you feel. You didn't specify, but if people treat you horribly then you have to consider is it them? Is it you? Is it the situation? Now that you are in a physically better place, time to look at other things. Can you get a better job? Move to live in a better place? Take up new hobbies? Make new friends? Learn to be more friendly and open to new things? Massively depends on how old you are… If you’re under 20, then your weight has no bearing on whether people like you or not. If you’re disliked before and after being a fatty then it’s probably because you’re not a likeable person. As a young adult though (20-35 say), that’s different because being fat probably makes you lazier, less likely to go and do things, less likely to have interesting hobbies… and truth be told, it’s quite disgusting to be around a very fat person (although depending on your height, 120kg isn’t in the disgusting territory). Then when you’re older than that it goes back to the other rule. Nobody cares about your weight and most people are fat anyway. So, my conclusion is that it’s likely you’re just not a very likeable person.

You should be very proud, that's an incredible amount of weight-loss! It hurts when someone doesn't recognise your achievements, appreciate the time and effort you've put in, or the personal struggle you've been through to get there. Many people who have never been overweight will likely never understand what it's like, they won't understand the complicated nuance of why people gain excessive weight beyond 'they ate too much', and it'll be less than 50/50 as to whether they are the type of person in the first place to have empathy and compassion enough to make these nice comments. Do not take this personally or to heart, everything within this paragraph is categorically not about you. This is a societal issue at large, rather than a gimmick. Recovering/recovered drug-addict? Fuck you. Ex-offender? Fuck you. Homeless? Fuck you again. You only have to exist even slightly outside the 'societal norm' or to have been perceived as making a bad decision, and you're at the mercy of the individual's ability to muster kindness. Please enjoy the new clothes and the way they make you feel, and enjoy finding and picking out things that you feel will look and feel better on your new frame: you absolutely deserve it. Anecdotally, my own experience (105 down to 76 currently) has been that the positive comments (from friends, colleagues and acquaintances) only came as I've neared my original post-pandemic weight. It was as if any other version of me was unacceptable, including 80, 90 and 100kg. I very recently had "Oh, you look like yourself again!", which I think was an attempt at a compliment. I was however very fortunate to have one friend that understood every fucking KG was a victory, and I'm glad she reminded me of that, because it's the truth. At some point I accepted that I'm doing this for me and me alone, and any other benefits or perceptions of others will change at some point and, by the time they do, I won't care. You are absolutely killing it with your weight-loss. Keep going, keep your head up high, as it deserves to be. <3

Over the past three and a half years I've gone from 16st 8lbs to 10st 8lbs. Still need to work on the last few pounds to get to my goal weight, but I feel so much better, physically and mentally. I'm very proud of myself for the weight loss. You should be too! Think about all the money you'd spend on buying new clothes if you happened to put on weight when you were 120kg. Then the money spent to buy the food which you'd overeat to get to that size. The money spent on new clothes is well worth it compared to the damage you were doing to your body.

Yes its something to be proud of because for the majority of people it is extremely difficult to do and stick to. I speak from experience life long struggle with my weight and it’s out of control now at over 600 lbs. However people should treat you decently regardless of your size .. but I know it’s not a perfect world and this doesn’t happen :(

It is a very big achievement to loose such a substantial amount of weight. 1/3 of your bodyweight is ALOT and probably was not easy. In what way to people treat you horribly? Is it still about your weight? is it about something else. Do you see yourself feeling happier with your body? Weight loss is about you and not anyone else, if you are happy with your hardwork then keep at it until you get to a level you are satisfied with. If people treat you like crap dont talk to those people and find new ones.

I don’t think loosing weight is something to be proud of because you ultimately you chose to eat like trash and be unhealthy unless u have a medical condition. I would say it’s better taken as a lesson for life because when your eating clean and your body is feeling good you will definitely notice the difference in most aspects and will realise the way you lived before was bummy. I think a big issue of today is the phrase “body positivity” because most of the time if you are very skinny or very fat you arent going to feel great about your body and other people validating poor life choices and lifestyles will only make people believe it’s normal.

I'm mid 40's benching 325 at 85Kg and never dieted or taken any performance drugs/hormone and was semi alcoholic pretty much for over 20 years. Don’t measure your worth by how other people treat you. Only you can determine that. You clearly decided that you are worth investing time and effort in to improve your health. You did that, you achieved it, and you should feel good about it. How other people treat you is not a function of your weight or a reflection on the efforts you make to improve yourself.

Well done you. I've gone from just over 130 kg, to 99 kg. Not too painful really. Knocked off the cake and biscuits, and started watching what I ate. Still losing weight very slowly. Anyway, people who treat people differently because of any characteristic they have, aren't worth bothering with, and their opinion is worth even less. I see stuff on the TV, and I despair at the shallowness of some people. Good luck with your weight loss.

Surely you feel more attractive, or less unattractive, on some level? I've recently dropped from 104kg to 90kg. So a bit less than your very impressive weight loss but enough for me to notice a difference. My BMI has dropped from being nearly obese (29.4) to being slightly overweight (25.4) - I'm still hoping to lose a bit more and get it below 25/ lose some more of my beer belly. Personally I feel better in myself - my clothes fit me better and I feel proud of myself when i see myself in the mirror before I jump in the shower. I'm not that bothered by the aesthetics otherwise -I'm in a long term relationship so not exactly on the pull on a Friday night. I'm also aware that a lower weight and less belly fat puts me at lower risk of heart disease and diabetes. Definitely wouldn't call the health aspect a gimmick. I did it through a combination of trying to eat more healthily most of the time (more fruit and veg, no cheeky cheese on toast snacks between meals) and taking up running again after a 6 year break. As well as helping me lose weight, I think these changes have also given me more energy and the competitive side of me is always happy to beat my running pace/segment time on Strava. Thankfully I haven't had to buy new clothes (though my belts have needed a few a more holes, which I find oddly satisfying). I would say most people haven't commented on it - maybe one or two people at work, and one or two parents at school. So can't say people have treated me differently (better or worse) but that's fine, I did it for myself.
