The styling looks like Range Rover wannabe, especially back with Toyota spelled in small font and the general vibe. The wheel size suggests this targets the Range Rover buyer too. It's not a proper off road vehicle if it has anything over 18 inch rims. It's very purist to say that, but there are real reasons besides gate keeping that large wheels are terrible on off road vehicles.

Well the 60-Series was pretty Gen 1 Rangie and the 100-Series looked very Gen 2 RR, is it really surprising? Imagine if Land Cruiser was it's own brand
View on Reddit #12333590

Snazzy21@reddit

And the Gen 1 Rangie is pretty Jeep Wagoneer-ish. That was the style then, like how all bland SUVs look the same today. The 100 series looks lot more evolutionary from the 80 series than it does from the RR. But Range Rover sold their soul to creating luxury vehicles with ornamental off road modes. That doesn't mean Toyota should have to.

I don't think Toyota is going to do that. They intended to make a Land Cruiser branded crossover and this is pretty much it right here. The 1970 Range Rover team, definitely checked out the Wagoneer like you suggested, since it was drawn up in '67 per some Googling. I do wonder if the 50-Series Cruiser had any influence on the Range too (cuz 1967)? Probably not. For 1980, the 60-Series had a subtly elegant, yet chiseled and modern clean look no one else had, except the Range Rover. And Yota did it before the 4dr RR became official in 1981. 60 might look dated now, but for something just 1 year after the 1970s, it looked like a kingship. GMs Suburban looked like glorified farm equipment and Wagoneer a Flintstone mobile by that point. The 100 looked a little late 90s RR to me meets j80, because somebody sent me pictures of the 100-Series backstory a long time ago. Mostly photographed at the tmc HQ in the early 90s and pics show Yota were really gunning for the Mitsu Montero (confusing), until like 1993ish when the signature look of the 100 came together in later mocks. Ironically, the Brit mags in 1993 were publishing spy pics of the '95 Range Rover already, so Toyota def might've seen it early... RR was Yota's only competition (that mattered), other than maybe the 300GE/G320 g-wagon. But, maybe you're right. It's easily a coincidence. The updated, signature looks of the 100 might've come from the smaller 90-Series Cruiser which was half a year ahead of the 100 in the design shop in '93, but the 100 I think took longer to get to market than the j90 and instead of late 96-97 intro, it was 1998. Think it was '94 when j100 body was 100% complete. What I can't shake, are the wider ribbed taillights of the 100 being nothing like the 50-80 cruisers that were slim+vertical, but instead the 100 tails were very similar to the '95 Range... Anyway, there's a rumor the new Defender was supposed to be body on frame, but Tata didn't want to develop a new frame for it and opted to just tweak the inhouse unibody instead for heavier use. Would've been more like a Bronco if they had done a new frame, but that's Landy today in general I guess. Once the RR was introduced 50 years ago and became the leading chariot of the Euro gentry, it was over and spinoffs for the middle classes, entrenched it. The many corp. owners of land Rover, prefer fatter profit margins and pockets over consistent substance.

I think it's possible, just look at the Lexus LF-LC concept and the LC500, it pretty much stayed the same. The Supra I can understand, since it's a shared platform with the Z4... If it was a fully Toyota platform, it probably would have looked exactly like the FT-1 concept.
View on Reddit #12242250

Nostradongus@reddit

But on the flip side the new LS 500 looks tame in comparison to the concept
View on Reddit #12323667

ascin1@reddit

What concept?
View on Reddit #12333266

Nostradongus@reddit

The LS+
View on Reddit #12334353

ascin1@reddit

The LS+ came out after the LS 500 was developed and revealed in Jan 17. It's not a concept for the LS like the LF-LC (2012) was. There's a long story behind that one. It was like a hodgepodge of the canceled GS redesign and LS 500. It was to become the (also canceled) FCEV LS planned for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
View on Reddit #12360855

F1_Geek@reddit

To be fair, Toyota designers did admit that the actual production car would be 10% smaller than the concept.
View on Reddit #12318285

ascin1@reddit

Yeah, I think they used the RC platform or something for FT1. Do you think the LC is why the GA-L is so cramped? It was the first car on it. It's not so modular IMO and it sucks we never got an gen 4 IS out of it.
View on Reddit #12333250

Viend@reddit

The LC was the only car in the history of concept cars to actually look like the concept.
View on Reddit #12259110

uchigaytana@reddit

The Audi TT did it, too. The only change they made was splitting into a separate hardtop and convertible model.
View on Reddit #12272162

ascin1@reddit

Audi had already designed the production car when the TT concept was revealed in September 1995 at Frankfurt, so very different circumstances. Lexus was further behind in the process than Audi was and had to commit to engineering that design as close as possible, no matter the cost. The production LC 500 design was locked down in 2014 from what an insider said, almost 4 years after they started working on it as a concept. It started out as LF-GT in 2010, then got upscaled and renamed LF-LC in 2011 when the GA-L RWD platform began development and it was being considered as a production car to replace the SC and LFA.

Yep. [Here's the FT-AC concept](https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a15338798/get-outside-toyotas-ft-ac-concept-sets-a-course-for-adventure/) in question, for reference.
View on Reddit #12253768

ascin1@reddit

Yeah, unlike the FT1 and LFLC, this is just a preview concept or something. I heard someone say it was developed during testing of the 2019 RAV4 and wasn't a reference point like the FT1 and LFLC concepts.
View on Reddit #12333409

ascin1@reddit

That's not really a concept lol. Just one of dem last minute teasers, when the design is already done. LF-LC and FT-1 were more true to that than the RAV4 concept, which was thrown together as a last minute preview.

It’ll probably end up looking like the ICE Land Cruiser with a variant of the concept grille and a greenhouse/roofline tweaked to aerodynamics.
View on Reddit #12254753

JEs4@reddit

The Supra is the reality of ICE hard points. EV architecture, assuming minimal wind resistance isn't the number one priority, allows for a much greater degree of design freedom. I bet it will look very similar.

vroomdaily@reddit

Love the design. The rear is a much better execution of what BMW was aiming for with their IX. And the front doesn't look ugly at all. Toyota is cranking up the cool factor with their Bev lineup 2.0! They've got gigacasting, snazzy new production methods, and even AI design in the mix.

Yeah, they're bullshitting. What's happening here is Toyota made a [reasonably concrete commitment to a \~1000km (\~621mi) car by 2026](https://global.toyota/pages/news/images/2023/06/13/0500/electrified_technologies_batteries_en.pdf) — it's supposed to be a Lexus, and notably, just one single car — likely a flagship LS or GS analogue. Autocar's now taking that commitment and gluing it onto every single concept Toyota shows off. Lazy, irresponsible, horrendous journalism.

Only thing different to me about Evs than regular cars is the lack of front grill. Guess based on the bmw design hate that's enough to get people going.

View on Reddit #12261165

strongmanass@reddit

> Please, all I want are EVs that look like cars and not EVs. Part of the reason ICE cars look the way they do is cooling and packaging requirements of the combustion engine. An EV doesn't have those challenges so there's no reason it should have to look the same as an ICE vehicle.
View on Reddit #12268084

bornecrosseyed@reddit

To me, this looks like a logical if modern evolution of even the classic 80s/90s era. It's a flat box with some creases in it and ICE proportions. Not sure what more you want. It's little more than a functional box with simple lights which is exactly why I like toyota.

View on Reddit #12267341

pithy_pun@reddit

Regardless if they bring it to production with anything like this look and those specs it will sell like hot cakes (esp if they could avoid the downsides of the bz4x like its charging curve and real world efficiency)
View on Reddit #12265622

activedusk@reddit

There is a lot of influence and inspiration from others. I dare claim the front "grill" that is blanked off along with the daylight running lights and even part of the lower air intake are clearly inspired by the Cybertruck. The rear has some influences from other vehicles as well, maybe some Fisker Ocean, maybe something else. The profile, reminds me of different other vehicles. There is a big trend going on in the industry right now but it remains unsaid, they're copying each other's homework but changing it a little. I mean Hyundai Ioniq 5 is blatantly an older restyled VW Golf while the Ioniq 6 is blantaly Porche inspired. In China this trend is more pronounced, or now I should say Asia considering Toyota and Hyundai Kia are guilty of it as well.

Solar panels, a little turbine for wind and water so you can stick that shit beside a water fall.
