Brother moved there with family. After the initial excitement, the reality of not having access to decent supermarkets kicked in…

What’s wrong with New World, Countdown, Pack n Save, Four Square? Didn’t struggle to find anything while I was there, but guess it depends where you live

I'm autistic, so they wouldn't want me anyway.

Yes, but not to Auckland or that cesspit of Brits on the east coast. I'd rather live in Palmerston North.

Don't know why anyone would choose NZ over the UK. NZ definitely has had a real PR spin put on it the past couple of decades. But the reality is all this stunning outdoor scenery that NZ purports to have can also be found in Scotland or Wales and the UK has the benefit of proper cities and culture and also being on the doorstep of Europe. NZ has not much better weather either.

If you want to live in the middle of nowhere, it might suit you.

holytriplem@reddit

Why? It's a long way from pretty much anywhere (including Australia), doesn't offer any particularly good job opportunities since it has such a small population, the job opportunities it does offer don't pay particularly well and the weather isn't even that nice.

Like many things, it depends what you want out of life. I was lucky enough to spend six months there recently and it has absolutely beautiful, stunning countryside. imo NZ is all about the outdoors, if you’re someone that likes hiking, climbing, exploring etc it’s paradise That said if you’re more of a city person I probably wouldn’t recommend it. In my experience the people are generally extremely friendly, sociable, chatty, generous, and kind. I think their sense of humour is similar to ours, unlike Australia which I always feel veers too aggressive/mean. Having spent time in both countries personally would pick NZ over Aus any day of the week, but both are too far away from family and I’d miss the UK too much to move permanently

I love New Zealand to visit, but the pace of life there would be far too slow for me, their biggest cities are mid-sized UK cities and everywhere is a long way from everywhere. Supposedly (from friends who live there) a great place to bring up kids, but I know, for me, it wouldn’t be enough for me. I’d pick Australia over New Zealand.

Yes, lovely place, safe friendly vibes and huge houses. Auckland is a bit of a sprawl though and there is no properly spicy food.

Nope. Wonderful place to visit, but probably the most depressing English-speaking country to live in: - Very high CoL. - Terrible wages. - Depressing climate. - Extremely far from everywhere. Even NSW is a three-hour flight, and it's a solid 24hrs plus of travel to even get to the UK. - Totally car-dependent. - Extreme time zone difference.

No. It looks pretty, but it’s isolated. They also seem to be obsessed in Rugby Union and Cricket. Two sports that frankly, I detest! If I was to live abroad then it would need to be in another country in which Football is an important part of the culture.

I thought I would when I was younger. Then I met and married a kiwi guy who told me what it's really like there. Between no bands visiting, food being really expensive, house prices and a general vibe of "bigger, prettier Wales", I've been discouraged.

Have lived in both and living in that part of the world is very remote culturally. If you like live music not many artists tour there. Culturally museums, art and theatre are lacking. All the big news is in a different time zone. But it’s the small differences like crazy bank charges and egotistic cops, strict rules (Oz mainly) that put me off. Once you seen London and New York nothing compares and you miss it being around. They are great if you want to live the quiet life but not for me.

I know a few kiwis who left NZ at the back end of the 20th century because NZ was just too boring. Enough of them saw the good stuff and returned to NZ to change the lifestyle vibe in NZ that I would move over there like a shot but I don't qualify and am too old now. TL:DR NZ is a fantastic place

No, there's simply not enough specialised industry for me and my wife to work in. And nearing 40, if we now move it has to be for a life changing sum of money (or after acquiring a life changing sum of money).

I'd be more likely to move to Australia, TBH. I think lots of people watch LOTR and see nature programs, showcasing the beauty of NZ wilderness and have some fantasy about moving there, but the reality could be quite different.

Having specialised in relocating Uk citizens to that part of the world I can tell you that 80% of clients end up choosing Australia as it has the same lifestyle but with much higher wages and more cities to choose from

I arrived in NZ just over a week ago and met loads of Brits that have settled over here. None of them seem to regret it. I would say the cost of living is very similar but the wages are a little better, and it's easy enough to find a job. At the very least, everyone who can should take advantage of the working holiday visas, test it out for 12 months and see if it suits you, that's what I'm doing anyway.

It's great, super multi cultural, loads going on, people are really friendly. Only issue is that accommodation in the centre is a bit sparse, but if you do find a place you'll find yourself paying prices similar to some of the northern UK cities, but a lot cheaper than renting in somewhere like London

I wouldn't. Get home sick very easy. Had a friend who moved there for 10 years and has just moved back. She missed her family and friends and found it quite isolating even though she married and had kids.
