All You Needed Was a Safety Pin
A safety pin and the embroidery thread. There were a couple years in the late 80s when every girl I knew had a partial friendship bracelet pinned to her jeans. Just my school?

This is cheating! Part of the process was keeping it from curling while you worked. I'm just so offended I can't even.

Oh man my daughter has me employed making these for her school's entrepreneurial (? is that a word) fair-- how DO you keep them from curling up? I am not getting paid if they curl!

Lol! I just kept it tight and smoothed it down every few lines. Then when finished I laid them out under weight, books mostly. It was work! My friend repinned them further down as she went, but it never worked for me. Omg maybe straight pins would work!

Thanks! Maybe I'll try re-pinning; usually I just keep yanking my pants leg tighter. A heavy book is a good idea too. Mama gotta get paid!

I also would like to know how to keep them from curling

See above, I just thought of straight pins!

I never knew there was a kit. We always used a clipboard.

I don't think there was a kit back in our day.

If you kept going with these, you learned a bunch of different designs which eventually became the hair wrap trend on Grateful Dead tour. Made my way across the country and back tying embroidery floss to people’s heads.

Tie a loop on the end and put it on your toe. Thread only needed.

I used a keyring- which I then hooked on a toe.

...and an attention span. Which I did not have. 🤣

That's when you went with the beaded safety pins. Colors based on what the kids local to you decided each color stood for (or just randomized)

Looks like a modern version of bobbin lace

A safety pin and knowledge of the 4-knot. I loved making these. My uncle was in outside sales for yarn, including embroidery floss, so he got me some good deals on it.
