I didn't like them that much but there's a Korean brand that does salted egg yolk flavour crisps and they're amazing. I have no idea of the brand name but I found them in an Asian supermarket.

Good quality tinned tomatoes are worth the extra. If you are making a pasta sauce etc you don't have to cook them down anywhere near as long, which saves some money anyway and will taste much better.

My wife gave me a bit of stick about buying them, given the cost of living. We did a taste test - got some supermarket own brand ones, maybe some supermarket quality ones etc. She no longer gives me grief.

Good chocolate. I've found a really excellent chocolatier who makes wonderful salted caramel bars and other fabulous flavours. Luckily it's so good that you don't eat even half a bar. It's pricey but I can't give it up. And I'm supporting a tiny business which is always good.

It's a company called Continuum Conceits. The owner, Alexandra, has had a couple of good reviews from Annalisa Barbieri in the Guardian which is how I first came across her. I've tried other independent chocolatiers who are a lot slicker and generally pricier but I think Alexandra's stuff is the best. We are pretty frugal, twenty quid a week each on food. This includes decent fresh coffee, proper butter (not the shite in tubs) and good quality loose-leaf tea. These are items we wouldn't want to give up. We are mostly vegetarian and I mostly cook from scratch, apart from beans on toast! I've never bought branded stuff like Heinz. I reckon three-quarters of the cost is marketing.

Whenever I get sent to the supermarket, I nearly always pick up an expensive snack for myself to enjoy in the car on the way home that nobody else knows about. Usually its either some bacon & cheese sausage rolls that cost about £3 for a pack of 4, or a bar of Tony's Chocolonely milk chocolate; also around £3ish a bar. To me, that's my fee for going out to do the shopping.

Fancy meats. Those little slices of Parma ham and the like to go with my egg n chips. Elevates it biggly. Bought some wine for a risotto and had enough for a glass left over. Really enjoyed it, so a nice mid-range bottle every few weeks for a glass on a weekend. Never been a wine person. I can feel port being a thing quite soon.

Mutti tinned tomatoes. We eat a lot of Indian/Italian/Mexican food as it scales so well with our huge family and many of these dishes have a tomato base. Buy quality tinned tomatoes over the watery supermarket shite makes a world of difference.

Same here. A man in our village has started roasting coffee in his garage and we've been buying from him. He's very keen on feedback and will often give you a 125g bag of something else when you're buying a kilo to see what you think. I will admit to being lazy though. Despite having a proper grinder and aeropress I tend to use the bean to cup machine
