TL/DR: Gun ownership in Europe is a privilege, not a right. Never give up your guns.
Spent some time in the Netherlands and Germany over the past couple of weeks with some friends and had an opportunity to go shooting with them at a range in western Germany. It was truly a fascinating experience to learn about the extent of the restrictions they are required to follow for the privilege of owning a firearm.
First, in the Netherlands, they can own only six firearms. They can have only bolt actions and side by side shotguns (not sure about pump actions). No semi-auto weapons and no pistols.
They are required to go through an extensive background screening and approval process. In the photo, you can see all of the documentation required in order to possess and transport your firearms. In the case of my friends, their rifles have interchangeable barrels and bolts to swap calibers. Each barrel and bolt is serialized and registered to the owner. The firearms and ammo must be kept in separate safes and the key for the ammo must be kept in a separate location from the gun safe. The state can come into your home once per year to inspect and enforce these rules. Supposedly they cannot enter your home if you’re not there.
You also run the risk of losing your firearm ownership privileges for traffic violations. If you’re caught drinking and driving, you’ll most likely lose your guns. The same thing goes for speeding. If you’re going 20km over the limit, you will likely get a warning. If you go 40km over the limit and get caught, you’ll likely lose your guns.
In Germany, firearms are also heavily regulated just not quite as much as in Holland. They do not appear to have a limit on the number of firearms they can own. I believe they can own semi-autos and suppressors but only after a rigorous background check process. The process includes “qualifying” with your weapon at the range and passing a test. Supposedly there’s a proposed law that would also require all semi-auto firearms to be painted blaze orange. I’m hearing all of this from the range owner as we conversed in broken English and German so I might be off on some of the details.
The range itself is spectacular with two separate one hundred meter ranges. One is meant for bench shooting and zeroing your rifle on conventional targets. The other is a “virtual” experience where they have an interactive screen that places you in various hunting scenarios and you shoot at deer, boar, elk, etc. You can rent rifles there, as I did, or bring your own. The range provides you with ammo (at a very high cost per round) and you shoot a course of five rounds at a time. After each shot, you can see where your bullet struck on the animal. It was interesting to see that there were more than a couple of spots in the rubber-coated floor where someone fired an errant round into it. This place also has a top notch ventilation system. I barely smelled anything after all of the shooting we did.
Apparently the range also serves as a police training facility where they put “shoot/don’t shoot” scenarios on the screen. The range owner was reluctant to show the program to me so I didn’t force the issue.
On a side note, my friends and I were shooting Blaser rifles, a .223 and two .308s. It was a first for me. All I knew about Blasers was that I always saw them on the main page of Gunbroker and that they’re expensive AF. Well, after shooting them, I understand why. They utilize a straight pull bolt which is extremely smooth and fast to shoot. It was also the softest shooting .308 I’ve ever shot. I never really cared for how they looked with the thumbhole stock but I must say that I’m a believer now and hope to add one to my collection someday.
All in all, it was an amazing evening of shooting and meeting some new friends that are equally enthusiastic about firearms as we are. The German range employees were shocked as I scrolled through my phone showing them photos of my collection. On more than a couple of occasions, the Germans and my Dutch friends all kept repeating the same mantra; “Do not give up your guns. Don’t end up like us.” Good advice.
ZookeepergameDue2160@reddit
Dutch guy here, you can own pistols and semi auto's, However the limit is 5 firearms.
GuessThatsMe@reddit
German gun owner here. There is a limit on the number of guns you can own, three semi auto rifles, two semi auto pistols (on the so called WBK Grün) and ten bolt action firearms (WBK Gelb). More and you'll have to shoot in competitions to justify owning more. You'll have to pass a mandatory safety test before buying your first forearm but after that you don't need to pass any checks to buy new ones. Before buying semi auto firearms you'll have to get approval from the shooting association with which you're registered and also the local council (although the latter is just a formality). For bolt actions it's quite a lot easier since you only need to register those with the council within two weeks after you've bought them. I've never heard about the bright orange thing but I could be mistaken. Other than that, it's the same as it is for the dutch people, just a little bit more complicated.
Eastern-Security-539@reddit
What about lever actions and rimfires?
shoturtle@reddit
Ex expat that live in germany befor coming home. One of the first thing I did was get my waffensackungen. That allow me to go the range and joing a shooting club. Shooting monthly for a year. I allow me to get buy my semi auto pistol. No where as bad as holland but it does take time.
Time in Europe gave me even a bigger appreciation for 2A.
ridiculusvermiculous@reddit
hey man, quick question, after qualifying for semi-auto would you be able to just bring in firearms you own outside of the country and register them?
shoturtle@reddit
No you can not bring it to another country. It allows you to bring it to the range and back in a lock box.
ridiculusvermiculous@reddit
Thanks. Like is there a way to transfer in the firearms I own now in the US once approved for ownership in country?
shoturtle@reddit
You need to contact that country you are going too, each EU country has their own regulations.
shoturtle@reddit
No you can not. I sold my firearms before coming home because it is next to impossible to import a firearm personally to the USs. Same for sending one to europe.
Aggravating-Time3266@reddit
It was planned by the interior ministry earlier this year to implement this with the new weapons law. You'd either have to surrender "assault-style" semiautos or have them marked in bright yellow colors.
This was thankfully delayed through a protest organised by the VDB and pressure from the FDP. Hopefully, Nancy Faeser is now to politically weakened to get anything done and the semi-auto ban is off the table.
skippythemoonrock@reddit
So they look like toys? What is the plan here
its@reddit
We need more colorful guns. There is no reason for the current state of affairs. Guns should be cute, not scary. Fortunately, the fosscad community is paving the way.

Been playing too much Cyberpunk and was wondering how a Haitian street gang was involved.
That, and I am not up on my German political parties.
Aggravating-Time3266@reddit
The VDB isn't actually a political party, it's the Association of German Gunsmiths and Firearms Dealers. It's their equivalent of the FPC.
Any association with the Voodoo Boys is purely coincidental, choom.
Gun_Nut_42@reddit
Thank you for the information.
GuessThatsMe@reddit
I can't find anything about this on the internet, do you have any sources?
Aggravating-Time3266@reddit
Take a look at the leaked bill of the interior ministry. On page 17 it says that the ministry expects all applications made by gun owners in order to avoid having to mark their rifles yellow to be unsuccessful: "Therefore, the yellow markings will be applied in all 135,000 cases."
There was a campaign earlier this year to bombard lawmakers with around 120.000 letters. The same organisation is currently lobbying for a complete overhaul of German weapons law, in the style of Austria and/or Czechia.
e_boon@reddit
So if a German gun owner doesn't register their new bolt action rifle...then what?
Scorpion360a@reddit
Then they get their guns taken away because the seller (Gunshop or private seller) has to notify authorities about the purchase.
e_boon@reddit
So what's the point of the registry if the gun shop owner signals it lol
VHDamien@reddit
Compliance.
Scorpion360a@reddit
its an old system and I'll guess back in the day they wanted to make sure that no weapon would be lost if a letter didn't make it
Scorpion360a@reddit
This only applies to sporting shooters tho. Hunters can buy 2 short guns (pistols/ revolvers, Guns under 60cm) and an unlimited amount of long guns (semi auto doesn't matter) and suppressors. Short Guns have to be approved before purchase but thats easy.
Dexter-the-Cat@reddit (OP)
Thanks for clarifying, mein Freund.

Agentje_P@reddit
You sure can own semi auto guns and pistols in the Netherlands.
Source ; am Dutch
I also really don't mind our laws, it makes sure only the enthousiasts and the people who are right in the head can own them. Keeping ammo and guns in seperate places makes it harder for them to be stolen or used in an angry state of mind
Yes you will get checks at your home, no they cant enter if you're not there
They'll ring the bell, not home? They'll pick another day to stop by untill they can check it
We have a lot less firearm 'accidents' or 'incidents' here like shootings.
They sure do happen, but then either people didnt store them properly, they are stolen guns, or illegal guns.
But compared to America I'm not afraid to accidently offend the quiet kid at school so thats a good feeling aswell
I don't want gun ownership to be a right here. Too many dumb ass people. Driving isnt a right either, also a privilege. And most people with licenses cant even do that
I would not want any of them to own a gun too. They'll either shoot their own ass off or mine by accident and I'm not feeling that
556Rigatoni@reddit
I'm going to add my two cents.
I envy the fact that in the US owning a firearm is a right. I do like the background checks and steps you have to go through in Europe too, it ensures to the best of its ability that only "good" people own them.
In some countries legislation will put firearms in two categories: sporting rifles (semiauto/bolt-action) and hunting rifles. To own a hunting rifle you need a hunting permit, so on and so forth.
I also envy just how cheap a firearm can be in the US. Sometimes sporting rifles available in Europe can be either top of the line, unaffordable stuff, or Chinese knock-offs/bad quality rifles.
Overall, keep it real. I already have my licence, I'm just waiting until I have enough money saved aside to get a solid bolt-action or semi-auto.
If you ever swing by in Italy, in Pellegrino-Parmense there is a long range shooting club, with targets up to 1000m away. It's always full and requires booking most of the times, but well worth it.
baaaaaardiiboy@reddit
Are you sure about the pistols and semi's in the Netherlands? I live in Belgium next to the border and regularly get my ammo there. They have just as much semi auto rifles and pistols like any other shop in Belgium. I do think you actively need to train and join official competition matches to own a semi and pistol.
They do have that hard limit of 6 which sucks balls for them. But that makes for an interesting 2nd hand market. Glad we have no limit in Belgium. Currently at 27 and they keep on coming :)
Dexter-the-Cat@reddit (OP)
That’s the info that was relayed to me. 🤷🏻♂️
BellFew6586@reddit
You are wrong, mate. I live in The Netherlands. The limit is 5 firearms. You can own semi automatic fitearms, such as AR15's.
Dexter-the-Cat@reddit (OP)
I don’t doubt you. I’m telling you what was relayed to me. Bedankt.
Hendrake91@reddit
Looks like you got a hunting based license, not a sporting one. With sporting you can apply for semi autos eventually but, when I still lived there, you needed to own different tiers for a certain amount of time first. You'd start with a bolt 22, keep it for a year, get a 9mm handgun for another year, then you'd be allowed to get semi auto center fire. They also used to whine a lot about shotguns for sports shooting, though I believe that's a bit up in the air these days.
Source: born in and used to live in NL till I moved to Sweden, which I left about a year and a half ago to go live in Texas. Guns played a big role in the decision to gtfo EU. :)
baaaaaardiiboy@reddit
Gonna ask that question in the shop next time I'm picking up ammo :)
Dexter-the-Cat@reddit (OP)
Yeah, let me know if you can. My guys seemed rather assured about it and marveled any time I showed them a photo of something semi-auto. They were over here in the US back in February and kept saying they couldn’t have guns like mine in the Netherlands.
baaaaaardiiboy@reddit
Well I got curious and started a Google quest. It is possible it seems however like mentioned before they need to actively participate in competition.
It also seems to go in fases, depending on how long you've been a member of a shooting federation you can get new types of weapons with the last fase being semi auto rifles. Almost feels like you're gaming and unlocking new perks...
I found a comprehensive explanation in Dutch on this website, you can forward that to your buddies. And use Google translate for yourself.

I knew it was bad in the Netherlands but damn that's some crazy stuff...
el_oniichan@reddit
Thank you for providing a different perspective.
Justlilethat@reddit
Are there any restrictions for tourists entering and renting a gun at again range in Germany?
Dexter-the-Cat@reddit (OP)
My understanding is that it would be a hard no in the Netherlands (Holland) and slightly less restrictive, but possible, in Germany. If you want to do it in Germany, you’ll be closely supervised and limited in what you can shoot. Naturally, you’d have to provide your passport / ID and such.
Justlilethat@reddit
Thanks for the info. The one I contacted in Germany said I should be a German citizen to be able to enter. Don’t know if all of them have the same requirements.
Dexter-the-Cat@reddit (OP)
Yeah, It wouldn’t surprise me if they have different rules and requirements, just like ranges here in the US.
LowflyingDutch@reddit
Born in holland and moved to US at 23. Have a nice collection and state I live in allows permitless carry. All it takes is store background check and voila.
Hendrake91@reddit
Welke staat?
Ja man. Do it.
Heerlijk land hier 😁🇺🇲
LowflyingDutch@reddit
Hah!
Hendrake91@reddit
Haha, well, ieder zn pad!
Thanks, denk het van wel, we'll see in a few years!
zupius@reddit
You can own semi autos in netherland. There are plenty of stores that sells those there, i bought both a saiga 12 and an HK 243 from a dealer in holland, delivered to my door in Sweden. Alot of paper work though.
Dexter-the-Cat@reddit (OP)
Hmmm… ok. That’s not the info that was shared with me. They did mention it was possible to buy suppressors out the door in Sweden. Is that accurate?
zupius@reddit
I know that you can own an AR15 in all except 2 countries in EU. And know the dealer im buying from through a friend, so I would trust him. Yes, last year they removed licensing requirement for suppressors here, you only need to show a valid gun license and then bring any amount of suppressors home same day. From 1/8 this year we can now have ARs on hunting license, that is the easiest license to get in Sweden. We have been able to get them on sports license for a few decades but its on the right path regarding guns here. No mag limits, only while hunting there are but many non commie US states has it aswell while hunting.
Saxit@reddit
Hmm, entirely sure about that?
zupius@reddit
Ive met competitors from all arround EU and singled out two countries where you cant own them. Do you know anything above that?
Saxit@reddit
In Spain semi-auto long guns is capped at 3 rounds, both for hunting and for shooting sports, AFAIK.
Portugal I'm not entirely sure of but I don't think it's something easily obtainable there either. Don't think we've had any Portuguese over at r/europeguns so I'm not exactly knowledgable about the laws there.
In Denmark you can have them but not use them there... so it's double weird. :P You get them for hunting abroad, basically.
Romania has probably the strictest laws in Europe (with the exception of maybe Cyprus, though it's easier to get a shotgun in Cyprus I think), I'm not entirely sure though but I doubt you can own an AR there.
I was right, at least by 1! :D
zupius@reddit
Spain loosened their laws abit recently, according to spanish people on another forum. One of Those guy owns a MKe mp5 and a DD ar15 in 300blk since lst year. So no ”rifle” cartridges in military calibers still though. Capped to 10 rounds now.
portugal is ok but quite strict and expensive. But for sure you can own ARs.
Croatia ars ok, though limit you to 3 guns in total, which sux.
Denmark is then also wierd, since there are competitions there. But maybe only for non danish people? 😅
If you check on romanias IPSC webpage youll find a rifle division. But i bet aks are the go to scary rifle there. You can own semis on sport or collection there but their economic status limit their ownership when they earn 1/10 compred to we do in Sweden.
So in the end its 3 countries, idk why i though ireland was UK and left 😁
Saxit@reddit
Nordic Championship in Rifle which was in Copenhagen was for non-Danes only, AFAIK. :P
They are willing to host it there to make a point, but it's unlikely to change for a while. But who knows, we thought an AR for hunting was never gonna happen either, in Sweden, right? :)
zupius@reddit
Yes, hope for progress. Since spain and greece now can have it, and we got a lottery jackpot with hunting (did not see that one comming), perhaps everything will turn out fine.
Now if just this fuxking economy can turn arround and interest levels decrease so we can spend more on pews 😆
zupius@reddit
I stand corrected again, 2…. Greece alows semi auto center fired rifles since beginning of this year 🤪
556Rigatoni@reddit
For reference, you can only buy firearms in gun stores, or have them shipped from one store to another that is closer to you, however they cannot deliver them directly to you.
Suppressors are also very illegal, even at a firing range.
zupius@reddit
I own 17 guns….. and sadly the government knows of them all 😂
Dexter-the-Cat@reddit (OP)
The US government isn’t supposed to know about what we have. But for some strange reason, I have a hard time trusting them on that point (or any other point).
zupius@reddit
We have no real ”limit” on how many we can own, there are some defacto limit on hunting guns but its not fixed, but there are justifications and after a number of guns it gets hard to justify the need. But this is under investigation and prepared to be removed next year with our current government. I need to buy a few more scary black rifles now when we can have them on hunting. But in this economy it sucks. Everything regarding guns are 2x your price, except HKs, they are about the same 😂 So HK only hate poors in the US ammo is about the same as your prices
SakanaToDoubutsu@reddit
Could it possibly be described as manually operated firearms can be owned without having a particular "reason" to own it, but for a self-loader you need to demonstrate a "need". Like you can just own an O/U shotgun for casual clay shooting without being part of a club or a licensed hunter, but if you want a semi-automatic shotgun you need to show that you're a member of an IPSC shooting club or a licensed hunter and that justifies ownership.
zupius@reddit
Thats how i understood it
UnusualAnt2861@reddit

ShortnPortly@reddit
Not shitting on these countries at all, so please do not take it that way. BUT, what is with Europes obsession with passport style "papers?" Shit just kind of reminds me off all the WII movies where they ask for papers to prove your identity.
_pxe@reddit
They are very old concepts, because they are considered a niche and nobody cares to update them.
For the Italian gun license you need to pay a postal telegram of 1.27€, it was created to pay for all the expense of doing a background check. What's really dumb that makes it so cheap is that the price was set at 250 lire almost a century ago(back in the days it was a lot of money), it was never updated or removed, just translated in euros. So nowadays that fee costs more for the transaction itself(ended up paying slightly above 3€) because it's such an old system.
emperor000@reddit
They are control freaks.

Neko_Boi_Core@reddit
the US should take a look at the UK suppressor laws and copy them.
if gun and want suppressor, ask police for suppressor, get purchase order, buy suppressor from gun store
no wait periods or tax stamps, just “hey can i have a suppressor?” “sure, here’s a request for one” “alright, cheers”

Glad i don't live there. Here in Sweden unbeknownst to most: we have pretty relaxed laws. You need a hunters permit or a membership in a gunclub to start with. You can own -6 rifles or shootguns for hunting (barrels must be longer than 45cm) -10 rifles for target shooting (no barrel lengt restriction) -10 pistols for target shooting -guns for Collecting is Unlimited in number but require permit to discharge the guns every time.
Fully automatic guns are under some citcumstances allowed for target shooting, usually submachineguns. They are also ok to collect.
There are no magazine restrictions unless when hunting. Silencers are deregulated and can be bought over the counter. Guns need to be stored in a gunsafe. Ammo only needs to be locked up, it can be in the gunsafe if you want.

It’s also a modern straight pull rifle, which is certainly interesting
Dexter-the-Cat@reddit (OP)
It does look like that. They’re made in Germany and the dudes at the range were quite proud of them and for good reason. The stock as built in length of pull and comb height adjustments. The action is buttery smooth. I’ve never been a fan of thumbhole stocks but it is extremely comforts me and ergonomic. The magazine design was certainly different. You push in two buttons on either side of the mag and the entire trigger group comes out with the mag. This also engages a safety lever on the tang, similar to a Mossberg shotgun. Blaser also makes some models with wood stocks that are absolutely gorgeous.
The-Fotus@reddit
What is it?
Dexter-the-Cat@reddit (OP)
It’s a Blaser R8 chambered in .308. They cost about $7k-$8k in the US. Some models cost more than that. Nice rifle.
rcmp_informant@reddit
We don’t have a right in Canada and it’s a heck of a process to get a permit. No more new pistols for now either. And our semi auto selection is very limited but at least we have some AR type stuff and type 181s albeit with serious magazine restrictions. Apparently if we get a new government and it’s conservative they’ll be willing to rewrite the firearms act to make More sense for everyone which would be nice.
tylermm03@reddit
I will not lie I hate your country’s gun laws, but poutine and being able to drink at 18 in some provinces is awesome. We also haven’t been able to get Norinco stuff since the 90’s because they got caught trying to sell full auto AK’s to gangs, so it’s interesting to see what you guys are able to get from them.
rcmp_informant@reddit
Our laws fluctuate with government so there’s tons of hope. Harper undid a long gun registry. Let’s see what happens!
