Europe is a big place composing of many culturally different countries, which in themselves have many culturally different regions. Saying you’re European doesn’t really say much, the next question would be “yes but whereabouts in Europe?”.

I'll preface this by saying I love Yorkshire, I lived there for 5 years and regularly go back to visit. But, I do feel that a lot of people from Yorkshire need reminding that it isn't a personality trait. The regional pride there is borderline obnoxious!

I'm Cardiff born, and Cardiff bred, and when I die I'll be Cardiff dead. I don't feel much kinship with the rest of Wales except at national sporting events. Then I'm red through and through. I've lived in West Wales, on the Carmarthenshire border for the last ten years, and I have no warmth for the area, yet when I go back to Cardiff, there's this buzz I feel that I get from nowhere else. Apart from that, I feel quite strongly about my British identity, especially when it gets criticised, and I do feel quite European. I guess living in London and Paris for significant periods have engendered that. This isn't about likes and dislikes. I like where I live, and I like the people. I'm just not passionate about it.

Idk what my regional identity actually is because I’m from the West Country but my family’s all from Yorkshire or Leicestershire. Can’t call myself a northerner (or midlandserer? Idk) when I’ve lived in the south my whole life but can’t call myself West Country when I’m not very West Country at all Overall yeah I basically consider myself English

I'm terran first and foremost (we are all human after all and no one is more important than another), then British, then a Northerner, then European. All of which are identities I take pride in. At the end of the day though I don't think it matters where a person is from, so long as we can all rejoice in the fact we're not American.

Just English. British Citizen by passport, so I'll accept being called British but I don't refer to myself as such. Part of the Polish diaspora, but I can't speak Polish. I don't have a regional identity, unless "M6 corridor" is one, and I don't have a regional accent.

I grew up in the Home Counties and have lived in London since young adulthood. My biggest 'identity' is "British". I don't really identify with my region or as a "Londoner". My "identity" doesn't really dominate my personality, though.

Northumbrian/Geordie, English, British, in that order. Obviously I’m geographically European, but don’t particularly consider myself a European citizen at all and never did - I feel I have much more in common culturally with Australia/NZ/Can/US than mainland Europe tbh. And that is despite having worked extensively across Europe and having some close relatives who are Spanish!

Australia and NZ I understand but Canada and Especially the US are another world for me. The only place I've ever really experienced culture shock was the USA. I don't think British people really have anything more in common with English speaking Canada than French people do with Quebec. I think the existence of the 'Anglosphere' kinda makes us lump continental Europe together in a way that isn't really realistic. I think that Britain is just as culturally simular to Spain as Sweden is, if not more - But Swedes are much happier to look past those differences and call themselves Europeans because there's no Swedish speaking countries in other continents

I lived in London for a decade and somewhere like New York or Toronto feels very familiar to me, moreso than a small village in Cornwall would. But I've also been to rural Texas and that of course is massively different.

I’ve always been fine in the US - the only time I’ve had anything resembling culture shock there was when I got lost out for a run in Atlanta and was in a neighbourhood I probably shouldn’t have. But a similar situation in Belfast was much scarier. I nearly got run over in Sydney once because they WEREN’T driving on the wrong side of the road… I take your point about the differences between European countries themselves - having worked in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Poland, I agree they are as different from each other as they are from us But when I’ve been there I still feel “abroad” in a way I don’t in Australia or the US, which is mad. Admittedly I haven’t been to French-speaking Canada. I guess that would be different But it’s not just the language because everybody I’ve worked with primarily speaks English anyway as it’s the common language between all the different teams I’ve worked with

I'm not sure my British identity is that strong either, but of the three I suppose that's strongest. But if we're talking about identity as something that is actually really meaningful to me, none of them really are.

British then English. I'm from the south which tends not to 'regionalise' itself as much as the north. I want to be part of Europe (as in the EU) but I wouldn't say the UK ever felt particularly European so I would never have named myself as such.

100% British. I'm from NE England and have spent a fair few years living and working in Scotland. I currently work for a team in Edinburgh, remotely, from my garage in Middlesbrough. Being from Middlesbrough, I am a Smoggie. I am a northerner, I am English. I also feel European. Nevertheless I am British. Incidentally I also identify strongly with geek subculture, and would say I am a geek before I would say I am English.

I’d consider myself Welsh first, then mixed Celtic/British. Despite being mostly equally Welsh, Scottish and Irish I have a few extra biases towards Wales including my surname, so the other two come after. Does that answer?

Region is hard as I grew up in two places, I think I identify slightly more with London than Kent, so I’ll go with. Londoner, British, English and maybe European (not really something I really identify with, more just a fact about myself).

Over 70% of Scottish people self identify as either more Scottish than British, Scottish not British or equally Scottish and British. Of course Scotland is a country although it is often relegated to region status. In Scotland people tend to have quite strong regional identities.
