It's because people want to feel like they're smart even though they're morons. So you can't make an actually complex game if you want it to be popular. You need to give them the illusion of epic build crafting and agency while still holding their hand every step of the way without them knowing.
Actually hard games like dominions 5 or ADOM will never be more than extremely niche because of this
You can totally build a complex game that's popular. You just have to hide all of the complicated crap behind a bunch of walls, so only the hardcore crowd will find it. Pokemon is stupidly complicated and it's a fucking kids game that's ***the*** highest selling franchise of all time.
Items have always had numbers. D&D is basically books full of tables of numbers. Even the earliest games all had numbers. In pac man when you ate cherries or ghosts numbers would pop up.
