8 Gauge SxS from Appaloosa

In the movie Appaloosa, Viggo Mortensen’s character carries an 8 gauge SxS shotgun. In the second pic you can see that he has a leather pad sewn into his jacket to help with the recoil. Very good western (in my opinion) with some of my favorite realistic shootouts. This movie does a good job of showcasing multiple different firearms from the 1880s and carry styles accurate to the era.

Apparently these were Cimmaron imported Colt 1878 reproduction 12 gauge shotguns that had the barrels sleeved to give the appearance of an 8 gauge. One of them was left non firing for the scenes were the guns were being loaded, the others were all 12 gauges.
Really wish somebody would make a modern 8 and/or 10 gauge SxS. That and a 12 gauge SxS with ejectors. I've wanted one ever since someone writing for a magazine brought out a small collection of old American double guns.
Got to shoot a black-powder 10 gauge. Its the exact same giggle factor as firing a machine gun.

Calobre 12 modernas con eyectores hay varias. Por ejemplo AYA, Holland & Holland, Purdey. Calibre 10 u 8 no...

That’s awesome that you shot a 10 gauge, I’d love a reproduction of that or an 8.

They’re still out there. I just seen one at a gun show this last weekend! Couldn’t believe heavy it was and can’t imagine the recoil in something like that.

I always thought that shotgun should have won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

I remember seeing an interview with the armorer on this production.
It's actually a 12 gauge shotgun with aluminum shrouds mocked up to look like a 8 gauge on-screen.

I watched that last night after posting this because I was trying to find out if they were even available anymore. Pretty cool bit of movie magic. Apparently they had a few that could fire 12 gauge and there was one that could be used for reloading scenes. I don’t think he ever reloaded it on screen in the Final Cut but there is an image of him reloading those gigantic shells on IMFDb.

Cool gun, but I'd love to hear which string of mistakes resulted in these pixelated screenshots with huge white borders.

Screenshots from IMDb, and I edited them to bring the borders in a good bit (the white border took up the bottom half of the screen). I didn’t think they looked bad lol.

Why shoot one goose when you can have the whole flock?!
Adventurous-Chef-370@reddit (OP)
Really though, the thing looked closer to a SxS Punt gun than a 12 gauge

To be fair, modern heavy loads are about equal to 19th century loads of the next larger gauge size - there are 2 ounce loads for ten gauge, for example.

Fair point. Modern steel and manufacturing, you could do a 4" shell if you wanted to. Farewell collarbone.

Badass. Thanks for sharing this I gotta watch it now
