What is so bad about the Chevy Hhr??

Everyone and their mother has told me not to buy a used Chevy HHR. Sadly no one can actually supply a logical reason. I get that some people don't like the look, but all I hear is, "my friend only had problems with that car!" What problems? "Idk, it kept breaking down." How so? "Idk..." Or, "You see them all the time on the side of the road!" Where?! I've never seen one on the side of the road!!
From what I understand it was kind of like a parts bin car. Chevy canyon frame? Chevy cobalt motor? Cheaper interiors... Not much space. Underpowered? I've test driven a couple and it seems to have plenty of power and nothing obviously bothered me.
All I need is a little car with a little motor with a little more space...
I'm looking at a couple on CraigsList and some used car dealers... 2008-2011 Anywhere from $3000 to $4500. From 90k miles to 150k miles.
Can anyone give me any good reason not to buy one?
Thank you for any input!

No one will respect you if you drive an HHR.
jfpcinfo@reddit (OP)
Luckily I'm not one to care to much whether someone respects me or not depending on my choices... Or for what I drive...
How is there meaning in the life of those who have to get this or that thing because everyone else thinks it's cool? Does someone putting you down for what you have actually bother you?
Materialistic things come and go, how you treat other people, regardless of what they have attained, is a much better way of discerning the value of a person.
The only question I really want answered about this car is whether it is likely to be reliable or not based on other people's opinions.
deleted_by_reddit@reddit
Gm cars from the early 2000's are less reliable than any Japanese car from the mid 80's. There. Question answered. If you want a car that gets shit gas mileage, has a creaky plastic interior, drives like a slug, and looks like it was designed by housewives in thier mid 40's, then yeah, pull the trigger on that HHR.
Edit:Typical GM ignitions
Edit 2: bad brakes and numerous build quality issues
Edit 3: if you don't care what people think of your car, then you might as well drive one that is cheap, reliable, and gets good gas mileage. Pass on the HHR and get a Civic. Millions upon millions of civics were made(and continue to be made), compared to less than 500k in HHRs
Jaminjef@reddit
Civics don't have enough space. I never see the wagon version anymore.

If other people don't like them it's fine with me. Probably get a better deal on one for that reason.

I've driven a 2006 HHR a few times as a loaner from the shop that works on my car. I think the HHR drives pretty nice. My biggest faults with it are the tiny cupholders between the front seats, and visibility isn't the greatest due to the kinda large or wide A pillars. But it drives nice, has sufficient power and reasonable handling. Mileage is better than my Suzuki Grand Vitara

I have had a Chevy HHR Lt since 2006. I bought it new. I've had it for almost 20 years. I love the car. It's great on gas. It's a pretty smooth ride. I've only had to do normal repairs on it. It's got a lot of room. You can fold the back seats down and you can fold the passenger seat down also I have full size doors in my Chevy HHR I have fit long PVC pipes in it. We have taken it down for vacation and drove it 1500 miles each direction and when we came back we had more than what we left with like most people do and it was packed up to the top but everything fit. They're great that way there's so much room again I can't even explain it it's amazing what you can put in it. But here's some of the downfalls of it. It sucks in the snow and if you live in an area where you have snow it's not the best. But if you put snow tires on it it's pretty decent. When I tell people this a lot of them don't me that they don't believe me because they're front wheel drive and it's me like in the snow LOL until they drive it. Or until they're on the road with me and snow happens and they see how easy it messes up in snow. And the other thing is I personally have not had a problem but a lot of people don't like the way the windshield is and they claim they can't see everything look a good line of vision. I have some really noticed anything like that I know how to problem that way with it. Yeah my opinion of it is they're pretty damn decent car that are dependable easy to maintain great on gas like I said I mean yeah and they're very cool looking in my opinion. So what I would say is you know a used car is a used car. When you get a used car you should take it to a mechanic right away or even before you would purchase to see what we need to be done if anything. But I absolutely would buy one again it's a shame that Chevy stop making them. Because they're a pretty decent car

.I have a 2010 below 100,000. My problem headlights constantly being replaced stopped by the law numerous times. The braking system is bad and blind spots are horrible. The perfect size you can actually live in it. But I don't suggest for anyone to buy it....sorry. why does it have 2 batteries?!!!
Extension_Look_23@reddit
it doesn’t have two batteries dumb fuck
popo618@reddit
I just bought one today, the only bad thing about them is that your friends will call you gay
Admirable-Meat7674@reddit
128,000 and never a problem. Buying an 09 today mint with 24000 miles on it. Great dog car!!
SnooRegrets1386@reddit
Found mine on my mail route, it’s fine

I like my 2008 hhr except as mentioned by others, it has large posts and it is hard to see out of. It's really easy to get in and out, almost like a van. Decent amount of cargo space. The cup holders are sparse and in awful positions. The window controls in the middle of the car do not make sense to me being as it cuts out space for better cup holders. The space they "saved" on the window controls was not used wisely either since there's really nothing useful there, just an odd slot that is deep but not big enough for cups. A keyhole would be nice for the hatch, since that's where the battery is, and if it goes dead you might be able to get in the front and squeeze your way back there to manually get to it. I've never had to do that but I read up on it and it looks like a real pain. Just some really odd engineering. No way to check transmission fluid. It is a comfortable car and there are still quite a few on the road, so I think they might have a decent lifespan. My son has a 2010 Pontiac Vibe and it's a similar size but has a Toyota engine and they seem to last.

My tea is, I bought my hhr for 4700 and had her almost 11 years as my first real car at 17. She did me good, slight trans mission leaker adn slower to shift. Other problems were my ac didn't like to switch from to front. Other that that I she was a beaut besides the damage I did living in Alaska going off roads, sliding into a ditch in her 10th year the having a horrible personal year and forgetting to put oil in her

Visibility sucks.
Driving feel sucks.
Interior sucks.
Exterior sucks.
Shitty car build from leftovers they had laying around.
Conscious-Dane@reddit
I agree about the visibility! It’s not easy to get a look all the angles and the windshield is SMALL
Othe that that I’d say it drives okay-
Interior is fine
Exterior is really cheesey-but now that I drive one, I think it looks just like all those little Kia’s and Scion hatchbacks
kawaiiqueen21@reddit
I love the love the look of them and was thinking about maybe one of those as a first car, is the visibility bad enough that it'd be too risky as a first car you think?
NextKaleidoscope4185@reddit
Hi! I currently drive a 2009 chevy HHR and its my first car. I was thinking about selling it bc of visibility but that was before I really drove it and got used to it and honestly its not that bad I got used to where to look. if you have any other questions if you haven’t already got the car bc this was from 5mo ago but feel free to ask!
Conscious-Dane@reddit
Nope! Just a little less than big cars… kinda annoying when you get used to others

weirdo.

Nothing is all that bad about an HHR. The rep it's got is because nothing is all that great about it either. It's just a Cavalier dressed up as a PT Cruiser. It is however reliable and economical and roomy. But its also one of the multitude of mundane, boring, unexceptional cars to come along in recent history.
So really it comes down to who you ask. The HHR driver and the "CarGuy" will give you different answers, both biased. Suffice it to say it's a decent enough "Appliance" but it's not a car enthusiasts first choice.
throwaway_0691jr8t@reddit
As an HHR driver and a "car guy" I personally love mine. My partner is the one with the turbo manual drive mustang, I've got the road trip vehicle and a motorcycle :-)
The_Burt@reddit
sure.
trickmj@reddit
I love mine. 2008 with about 89500
The_Burt@reddit
Putting less than half the average miles annually might have something to do with it.
Appropriate-Meet1379@reddit
I put about 90,000 mi on one in about 2 years. No issues what so ever
Appropriate-Meet1379@reddit
I did a lot of IT work driving one of these and I miss it. It was really great!
Appropriate_Ad117@reddit
I have a hhr been owning it since 2021 and it’s fun to drive plenty of room but I notice some problems with it
On the interstates and sometimes highways it buffs around and if there’s high winds you’ll have to counter steer it just to stay in your lane one time I had it turned 90* just so the wind wouldn’t push me into the other lane
With my height if I had the visor all the way open and against the front windshield it blocks the top half of the sight out of the windshield to I can only crack it so the shadow of it covers my eyes from the sun but still have sight out the window
The stock suspension is really soft I mean I’ll be sitting in the car move one knee side to side and the whole car would be shaking as if I was shaking the car from the outside
l5555l@reddit
There are better cars for the same price.

name names lol....lots of people are looking!
Alan_AN1MO@reddit
I don’t own a HHR but have been curious about its reliability. Yes it’s looks is t for everyone but for me it’s the reason I’m thinking of purchasing it given its retro styling. This was GM’s response to Chrysler’s PT Cruiser, another retro styled “love it or hate it” vehicle.
Ashamed-Camp-6732@reddit
No I had I have a 2010 I've had it for 3 years never done anything to it it's also been wrecked twice I'm still driving it to this day I love it I wouldn't have any other car it's a beast

Please help! I'm looking for a clutch kit for a 2011 Chevy Hhr Lt! Anybody know anything about them?
DueCalendar4798@reddit
I have a Chevy HHR and I hate it! It has no power, the driver door handle always gives me problems, even after replacing it because it broke. Front passenger door and rear driver side door don't unlock. I have talked to other owners and they say the exact same thing. That's just a few problems.
DueCalendar4798@reddit
SAME SAME SAME exact problems!!!!!
Conscious-Dane@reddit
The door handles SUCK! I’m replacing one now- and it’s so dumb
Acceptable_Maximum60@reddit
Not me. China closet people write HERE.
buba426@reddit
i own and drive an hhr. i can point out a few things. although its reliable as hell ( including preventative maintenance: oil, tires, blah blah ), it is incredibly underpowered. it screams in pain if i try to push it too hard and does not like to go above 80 mph. second, the steering, while fun, feels a little loose to me. finally, it just feels cheap. im saving up to replace it with a faster car eventually. NOTHING beats screaming down the street at night with an engine so loud it wakes the dead ( except the fact you have to watch out for the police and their ticketbooks of DEATH)
Acceptable_Maximum60@reddit
Some humans are also CHEAP
Acceptable_Maximum60@reddit
I have a 2009. Starts and goes every time I try. Low maintenance, huge storage. -air still works. WHO THE HECK TOLD YOU THAT. Hhr is Chevys best kept secret. It's nostalgic looks kept it from selling but it's a plumb of a car.
OrdinaryLatter3792@reddit
Honestly I like the hhr it's a good car never broke down on me just keep up the maintenance
WesternWaGal92@reddit
I just purchased an 08 HHR and I adore it. I've owned A Saturn Sl1, Honda Accord, Cadillac Cetera, Ford explorer and Ford Escape as well as a Lincoln Town Car. The HHR has by far been my favorite. Great on gas. Easy to handle. Looks cute and very spacious. Seats are comfortable as well.
TBFCrypto@reddit
I recently managed to snag a 2011 with 74,500 miles for less than $6k. Had it for 6 months and it drives fantastic. That said, I drive mostly highway to/from work and routinely go 90mph and it's fun. Granted, the 90mph is for about 10 minutes, no cross country stuff. That said, keep good tires on it, maintain it, it will get you from point a to b with no hassle. It's a fun little car. Given that my other vehicle is a Ford E350XL, this car feels like a toy in comparison. LoL
