I unplugged the noisemaker in my RAV4 EV. And when I had a LEAF it was a 2011 so it still had the button to disable it which I formed a habit of pushing every time I started the car.

That’s a risky thing to do from a liability perspective. I don’t like the reverse sound of my Tesla, but disabling it could open you up to a lot of liability if you ever did accidentally hit a pedestrian.

It’s not because the car was a 2014 and predates rules that require noisemakers. Most other vehicles didn’t include them at the time. But don’t worry the car was plenty loud thanks to the garbage Tesla-supplied powertrain with its grinding motor. Tesla didn’t add noisemakers to their cars until 2019 so cars with the same powertrain as the RAV4 EV were being legally sold and operated without noisemakers for a further 5 years after RAV4 EV sales ended.

Whether other cars at the time had one or not isn't relevant. It's whether *your* car had one that was disabled by you that may have contributed to a pedestrian injury. That would open up a lot of liability to you in a potential injury lawsuit.

I agree that it is the drivers responsibility. However, it is still dangerous to have silent cars for blind people. There are a lot of bad drivers out there, and I wouldn’t want my partially blind wife to just trust no one is gonna hit her.
