Always seemed like a status symbol purchase to me but where these any good?
uh60chief@reddit
As the saying goes:
If you want to take a backcountry trip, take a Land Rover.
If you want to get to your destination on your backcountry trip, take a Jeep.
If you want to come back home from your backcountry trip, take a Toyota.
Responsible-Device64@reddit
Jeeps are hella unreliable as far as I know
Socalwarrior485@reddit
I gotta take all 3?
monsterflake@reddit
that's why the land rovers dies first, it was carrying the other two.
AcrobaticButterfly@reddit
Use the Toyota to tow the rest of the
landrover97centre@reddit
Oh god no, the LR2’s aka the freelanders were awful. If you want a Land Rover of similar value that’s more reliable, looks better and is by far more capable off road, get a discovery, anywhere from a D1-LR4, if you want reliability go with the D1 or the lr3, if you want something a little modern go with D2 or lr3, if you want status symbol, power, and modern luxury go with the LR4 but the LR4 is the most expensive at $20k-35k, D2 is the second most expensive at anywhere between $3500-9k+, lr3 is the second cheapest but probably the second most reliable at around $3500-9k+ (the D2 and the lr3 are similarly priced, the D2 is more enthusiast driven so prices are jacked on them), and the cheapest and imo the most reliable, the D1 coming in at around $2000-4000 on average, but with all cars, amazing examples can see upwards of $8-12k.
dudemango3@reddit
LR4s are $8k+ now, excellent vehicles for the money if you don’t mind doing the work or spending the money to service the timing chain components and coolant pipes.
But yea the LR3 with the 4.4 AJV8 and zf6 is probably the best of all worlds
I_Stabbed_Jon_Snow@reddit
They’re terrible. The only decent Rover model has generally been the Defender, they seemed to be made to a different standard.
dudemango3@reddit
LR3 with the 4.4 AJV8 and the zf6 is bulletproof
James_Bong@reddit
The classic Range Rovers were bullet proof. Well, other than electrical gremlins (Lucas, Prince of Darkness).
I owned two SWB '95 and l still regret selling them. Not to mention their timeless good looks.
jeff-beeblebrox@reddit
My friend owned a 93 discovery in the mid 2000’s. We would go to Moab a couple times a year to mountain bike. I would bring my 80 CJ7 with a little lift and 35s and he would bring his stock defender. Most of the trip was riding but we would also go crawling for fun. The defender leaked everything imaginable and the interior was falling apart but it was shocking at how good it was off-road. It looked ungainly and top heavy but it was a beast. My jeep was better but afterwards he would drive home at 75mph with A/C. I was impressed.
DijonNipples@reddit
If it says Land Rover on it stay far, far away.
landrover97centre@reddit
Have you owned a Land Rover or are you just basing this comment off brand reputation?
dudemango3@reddit
Surely the latter. I don’t know much about the freelancer but the LR3 with the 4.4 and ZF6 is bulletproof and regularly go over 600k miles with regular maintenance
Tundra37s@reddit
I owned a LR RRS. Left us stranded twice with less than 44k miles. Beautiful thing to drive when running, just those darn electrical issues that wouldn't let it start, or turn on electrical pwr.
FERALCATWHISPERER@reddit
Brand reputation and quality control are the basis for my judgement.
DijonNipples@reddit
Yes
natek11@reddit
Reputations exist for a reason.
dadbodnumber1@reddit
From someone who actually owns one….. It’s been a great vehicle. A 2010 with 220000 K’s bought it with 95000 and have had no major issues and has never left me stranded. It has a Ford powertrain which I think helps a lot Not sure if any other Land Rovers do. Just make sure you don’t go to Land Rover for parts and service lol
2ndharrybhole@reddit (OP)
Yours is literally the first remotely positive response 😂😂
mynamesrickgrimes@reddit
Seeing this thread one year late - I’ll give you my 2 cents:
I’ve owned a 2008 LR2 for 4 years, bought it from the original owner with 72k miles and have since put 30k miles on it.
It’s been absolutely brilliant. I do all of my maintenance myself and here’s what I’ve had to do:
replaced alternator; there’s a silly coolant line that has a quick connect fitting that sits right over the alternator. It began leaking and killed the alternator. $200 and I was back in business (and a few hours of work; the entire intake manifold has to be removed which has a couple tricky bolts on the bottom)
some coolant work; had a couple hoses that leaked from age, one of which was rubbing on metal. It actually leaked severely and could have been disastrous for the engine if not discovered quickly
Other than that, it’s been a joy to drive. It has the v6 Volvo engine which is powerful and solid feeling.
ice0rb@reddit
Know this is old but--
These are generally known facts:
Land Rovers are expensive to maintain. (They're for wealthy people)
Don't listen to people on Reddit-- there's tons of people in this thread alone spewing misinformation, and have no evidence to back up their claims (Range Rover is not the parent brand of the LR2, hell-- it's the opposite way around. No, the LR2 is not the predecessor to the Évoqué, they're not even the same platform) -- so why trust them?
Moynia@reddit
I can can almost bet 99% of these people have never turned a wrench on this subreddit.
snicker___doodle@reddit
My mom had an LR2 and she's never turned a wrench lol. Her LR2 was in the shop at least 2 times per year for random shit dying or failing. Did scheduled oil changes as well. She finally got rid of it last year after about 5 years of ownership. Bought with very low miles, same Generation.
ForgottenPheonix@reddit
I’ve been a vehicle technician for 10 years now. Bought one of these as a second car a year ago and it’s been brilliant! I work on all brands and models and have owned all sorts. My Land Rover just seems to do anything I need to roomy, comfortable. It’s not the quickest though 😂
AlkalineBriton@reddit
Go ask for advice in the Land Rover subreddit. Most people have never owned one or worked on one but love to say it’s the most unreliable car you can ever buy.
Justbenwithaone@reddit
I work where these where built, and If I remember correctly, it had the lowest number of warranty calls of all the Land Rover range. Most of the running parts where ford, switch gear is Volvo. The people I know who have owned one, they swore by them.
Haunting-Ad8580@reddit
I have one with 145k miles currently. Love it. Had it for 8 years so far
rumblefish_88@reddit
I own a 2011, Freelander (LR2) - 3.2 litre (Volvo 6cylinder) petrol, with a 6 speed Transmission (Aisin/Toyota), it’s based on the Ford Mondeo Platform. It’s been totally trouble free for the last 2 years of ownership as a daily. Services have cost nothing above the ordinary, but it will use a lot of fuel. Economy aside totally rock solid, comfortable, safe daily driver.
cheekygrin678@reddit
Intrigued why you say no to LR dealers? I’ve used aftermarket LR specialists on my 2012 Freelander 2 and never had any problems (Melbourne, Aust). Haven’t used new LR dealers though
Spoonmanners2@reddit
This is so cheap because everything breaks on these cars and replacement parts are crazy expensive.
quaffwine@reddit
In the UK these freelanders are the ‘actually surprisingly good ones’. Shares lots of parts with Ford and well build and simple generally.
Brand reputation doesn’t make for helpful advice.
KyleThelegendxxXxx@reddit
What year do you recommend? Or things to look for?
quaffwine@reddit
Check suspension components for excessive wear if it’s one been off-roading. Try for the 2.2 diesel and stick to 12’-15’ for a nice modern interior. Basically a luxury rav4 built with Ford parts.
A great surprisingly sensible car to stand out from the crowd over the Atlantic. Here they’re used by farmers and their wives as day to day cars.
DryAd8103@reddit
I need a new engine for my 2014 land Rover lr2. Are they interchangeable? Or where can a get one that won't cost over $5k?
Inside-Catch4194@reddit
I have a 2012, and it's been down nearly a year thanks to the high price of genuine parts and current economic decline of the US. If I were you, I'd shoot for anything from '13-15
jaylallnyc@reddit
Did we get them with the ecoboost in the US?
Unlikely_Estate8614@reddit
Some of them have Volvo engines
Top_Trouble_8740@reddit
All LR2's have Volvo engines and Ford bodies. Worst of both worlds when it comes to maintenance. I don't think they ever got the integration quite right. But I still like my 2008 LR2.
Mosselzeug@reddit
That's not at all always a good thing.
Capital_Punisher@reddit
I had one from 80k to 160k. The only thing that started going wrong was the DPF because I wasn’t giving it enough longer journeys during covid. The mechanic put some cleaner through it, I drove it for 300 miles in a day and it was fine.
I only got rid because it was very low spec and I could afford a new RRS.
KyleThelegendxxXxx@reddit
What about the newer diesel?
landrover97centre@reddit
Replacement parts are actually relatively cheap, I’ve kept my discovery on the road with about $1500 worth of parts over the last 4 years of ownership, not 1500 a year, but 1500 over the course of 4 years time, not including general maintenance such as oil and fluids.
KyleThelegendxxXxx@reddit
What year, and how many miles?
landrover97centre@reddit
97 discovery, 165k miles, but I also have a 2003 discovery 2 with 300k miles, but I haven’t owned that one long enough to determine how much I’m going to end up putting into it to keep it running.
cheekygrin678@reddit
Try owning one and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Reliable AF. Don’t know where you’re from, but in Australia parts are reasonable. Toyota prices basically
2ndharrybhole@reddit (OP)
They just look like toy cars to me.
An5Ran@reddit
Are all “toys” you usually play with this big?!?
MomentUnable6808@reddit
Then why are you asking if they’re any good?
treetyoselfcarol@reddit
Parts are pretty reasonable at Atlantic British

This, and the 1st gen Evoque, are probably the most reliable Land Rovers ever made.
2.0 Ford Ecoboost i4 Aisin-Warner TF-80SC Haldex Gen 3 coupling (for AWD models)
Getting parts for these is extremely easy, especially since these parts were used in a ton of other vehicles. The engine also takes 5w30 oil. I have a 2015 LR2, and apart from the horrendous resale value, it’s an amazing vehicle. As long as you change the fluids regularly, it’ll last a really long time.
goateer-8@reddit
do you by any means know where we can get a ford turbo parts for this? there used to be an infamous exhaust manifold leak that need to replace entire turbo?
someonealreadyknows@reddit
I’ve luckily not had issues with the exhaust manifold or turbo (yet), but look up part numbers for the 2015 Ford Escape 2.0 or 2015 Fusion 2.0 eco boost. Based on my experience and some internet sleuthing, most engine parts except the power steering system, ECM and some plastic parts are interchangeable with most other 2.0 Ecoboost equipped vehicles, even the new ones like the Ford maverick. Some parts may require some light modifications to fit.
DoctorHanz@reddit
My buddy had an older Land Rover. It’s changed radio stations on its own when you turned left. Then it blew a head gasket
noamgboi1@reddit
Lmaooo, the way you stated this made me laugh so much. From radio station to head gasket 😂😂😂😂

Holy fuck so many armchair auto experts here..nothing but jokes and bullshit answers.
YES they are good cars. Especially in the US, you know why? Because it's a Volvo XC60 underneath. Open the engine bay of any 3.2 Volvo and it's identical to an LR2. They even share the same exact suspension components. My sister has had one since 2016 and it has received little maintenance since, still runs like a top. The 3.2 is a bullet proof motor and can easily go 250k+ on basic service. These are also old enough that replacement parts from junkyards are easy to find.
MichaelJohn920@reddit
One of the few exactly right comments
fedrats@reddit
Oh whoops here I am thinking it shared the same platform as the Escape (just a bulletproof vehicle). It’s EUCD and the engine is common and simple. I’m surprised people have trouble with it.
mini4x@reddit
Nothing more expensive than a cheap luxury car...
TypicalJeepDriver@reddit
Famous YouTuber Doug Demuro got his start on YouTube by buying a Range Rover with a 3 year CarMax bumper to bumper warranty and seeing how much they would pay out in warranty costs.
He paid $25k for the car with the warranty and with a year left on the warranty, he sold it. By that time, the warranty had paid out $44k in repairs.
I wouldn’t touch that car with your dick.
mlb406@reddit
This isn’t a Range Rover though…
NotMyFirst_RedditAcc@reddit
Right, it’s even worse
chauggle@reddit
Except this car and Doug's car have literally nothing in common except their country of origin.
-B-E-N-I-S-@reddit
They do have something in common. Quality control standards.
FleshlightModel@reddit
Depends on the year. LR is now Indian owned and have changed a bit since it was British owned.
chauggle@reddit
And a 6 cylinder Freelander (LR2) WAS a fairly stout vehicle that tended to last.
circlethenexus@reddit
Just curious, what the hell would constitute $44,000 in repairs in a two-year period?!
TypicalJeepDriver@reddit
It was in the shop more than he drove it
1989toy4wd@reddit
Go watch the video, transfer case, air suspension, electrical issues, etc
cheekygrin678@reddit
Funny sign off, but your username gives you away. Freelander 2 is solid, reliable and capable AF.
Source: my 2012 Si6 I bought second hand at 25k kms and still use daily, and some mates with diesels too
landrover97centre@reddit
The big thing that goes wrong with these cars are the air ride suspension and the engine, I do not believe newer freelanders/ LR2’s had air suspension, and they definitely never got the V8 option either, these are two completely different cars from bumper to bumper, like another comment said, the only thing this car shares in common with the RR is the parent company
criminal_cabbage@reddit
Range rover ≠ Freelander 2.
The only thing they share is a parent company
corvettekyle@reddit

ripped_andsweet@reddit
they’re not unreliable, not every land rover is a range rover and these have a simple ford-sourced powertrain. i’ve seen many of these with over 200k.
everyone always just has to parrot the “land rover is unreliable” thing. one of the top comments in this post is just “doug demuro’s shitty used range rover from carmax was unreliable, so base your entire decision off of that fact”
Graywulff@reddit
I wouldn’t take one for free. I was offered an abandoned one by a landlord. They fall apart, expensive parts, unreliable, it’s a snobby ford escape but much more expensive and will leave you stranded.
Ok_Peach_1989@reddit
Those cars break a lot, really!

*Ford Escape
Tunerzz@reddit
This has nothing to do with a ford Escape except their parents company at the time. Different platforms and engines
youPPLnvrHappy@reddit
It is literally a ford escape platform with a Volvo drivetrain and Volvo infotainment
Tunerzz@reddit
no it doesn’t this is on the EUCD platform
09Customx@reddit
2013+ got a 2.0L Ford EcoBoost instead of the 3.2 Volvo engine
bearded_dragon_34@reddit
Correct. This is actually related to the gen. 1 Volvo XC60. In fact, it’s basically a Volvo with Land Rover capabilities and styling, on the global Ford EUCD platform (codeveloped by Ford Europe, Mazda and Volvo).
fedrats@reddit
Yeah that’s the thing. I owned a Mazda Tribute and that sucker was nearly indestructible. The Ford escape and all its kin are cheap to maintain and pretty reliable. Fun? No not really. I wouldn’t overland it, that’s for sure.
Aeriq@reddit
Land Rovers are for leasing, period.
Buying a used Land Rovers is for the blissfully ignorant.
A used car dealer who I really trust laughed in my face when I showed interest in the LR on their lot. He didn't even break stride, it was just like a "hahahha, no" situation. I was humbled.
minnesotajersey@reddit
The price answers the question.
time_to_reset@reddit
This is known as a Freelander in other parts of the world and it's the predecessor of the Evoque. I've never considered this a status symbol. It was the entry level LR and you see them everywhere in Europe. It shares a lot of parts with Ford and I believe a Volvo models.
It's nothing like a Range Rover and the people that own them are completely different too. I'm not saying it's a bad car, but a luxury SUV it most certainly is not. I consider it on par with a Forrester.
cheekygrin678@reddit
I’d say predecessor to Disco Sport. It has genuine 4WD capability too, not just an SUV like little Jeeps or an AWD wagon like the Forester. I’ve off-roader extensively with the Freelander. It’s basically like a small Disco 3/4, but not needing the extensive systems and separate ladder chassis / monologue body of the Disco as it is a lighter, smaller and shorter wheelbase. Still found it surprisingly wide and good for a 5 person family.
time_to_reset@reddit
Yeah you're right. Disco Sport. For some reason a lot of reviews mention the Evoque.
PilotKnob@reddit
You like troubleshooting electrical problems? Because that's what you're going to get if you buy this vehicle.
NigelShiftright@reddit
I think overseas buyers have more luck with these than the LR2 offered in the U.S. A U.S.-spec LR2 is IMO a risky purchase.
If you're handy with tools and have a good network for parts and perhaps a friendly LR repair shop, you could cope with a used one---but if you're a rookie, I think the LR2 will beat you up.
timg2120@reddit
"Were" these any good?
boogerslurp@reddit
This is a Ford Escape with pleather and LR badges.
old_skool_luvr@reddit
I don't know, where were you planning to buy this from?
bearded_dragon_34@reddit
These were fundamentally Volvos with Land Rover styling and Terrain Response AWD. They’re not bad, but they’re not good, either.
Additional_Flow_5866@reddit
As a land rover mechanic these are the more reliable ones then others. Its still not the most reliable option tho bec land rover isnt always reliable. More i dont really know about it. But you can look for leaks like oil or something
cheekygrin678@reddit
Not a status symbol - no one’s confusing it with a Range Rover anytime soon. The only status it has is that it’s a genuine 4WD capable Land Rover
2ndharrybhole@reddit (OP)
Okay I just assumed the people buying it were getting it for the Land River badge as opposed to actually off reading it. That would make us a status symbol purchase to me.
cheekygrin678@reddit
In Australia that’s not so much a thing. New Range Rover - yes for status, but Land Rover = serious 4WD. I personally buy them for that and to have one car that does everything for the family. I find them a generation ahead of everything else for 4WD capability and comfort (Toyota etc) so second hand is a good proposition.

Brilliant car. I own one which my daughter now uses as her daily driver - petrol Si6. Great around the city, zero problems. Simple design but off-road is in its DNA. Crossed the Nullarbor a couple of times, lots of high country off-road camping as well. Smooth ride and has a good solid feel for something much lighter than a Defender & Disco
trollface5333@reddit
Depends if it's from the UK or not (same goes with TVRs). The English ones are fine from my experience, although the American ones are like jeeps, they break down alot.

I owned one, it's the only car I was happy to let go. The diesel powertrain was very reliable but the awd system kept having haldex related problems. Off road it was capable but definitely not a good choice for such tasks.
