I reached out to the district manager and bounced that fool off our account. We were $1M+ a year with Dell. Switched to another vendor for PC hardware on the next refresh cycle.

I dropped dell for different reasons. Would sell stuff, and fail to invoice. I would beg them to invoice. They would not. Then like 2 years later they try to invoice me WITH Penalties. I had kept the budget in carryforward, but we paid it and had already dumped them. They also did shit in ridiculous other ways. Once we ordered a Tape library. They sent me 2 tape libraries. Wouldnt respond to emails asking for it back. Finally i sent the district manager a picture of the most expensive christmas party snack table, which was the tape library they wouldnt take back. (they also tried to invoice me for it several times, despite me showing them the PO for only 1.). It was a 50,000 dollar table in our break room for 9 months.

When was Dell good (serious question)? We bought from them for more years than we should have, and in Apple's early days with Intel processors, the equivalent Dell machine was $100-200 more. My quote procedure with Dell was to request a quote, wait two days, request it again, wait two days, then contact our rep's manager. I'd usually get it within a day, then. Our reps, even when they changed were completely incompetent. Our purchasing department hated working with them.

Huh. I've done all of our server ordering for 8+ years now and never had these sorts of issues with the various Dell reps we've had. The last one tended to schedule 1/2 hour meetings when it was obvious that we needed a full hour to talk through the subject. Someone would have to leave at the 1/2 hour mark 'cuz they had another meeting, so it would be hard to get everything sorted out. He thought he was being respectful of people's time this way, but it was the opposite. But the guy was really nice and we would at times chat about other interests we had in common, so I could put up with the minor annoyances like that. Sadly, he got cut a month ago when Dell went through a ton of layoffs. They say they're directing customers to us their VARs instead of doing all the in house sales and pre-sales expertise.

They've been much more aggressive recently. I've put this list together for my boss recently from the last month. Many of these are from big name companies we are probably all using. 1) Spoofing your caller ID to appear as a satellite office 2) Texting me without identifying yourself with a message "[my name], I need to speak with you as soon as possible." 3) Calling me in the evening on my cell phone and when I say I'm cooking dinner for my family, responding "well I only need a few minutes", and then launching in to your sales pitch. 4) Threatening to escalate my non-response to my manager. 5) Unsolicited calendar invites. 6) Sending me an invoice for a service I have declined "just in case". 7) Calling four times a day every day. ...and finally... 8 ) Robocalling my cell phone continuously until I answer.

I’ve had vendors try to send calendar invites to movies and paid lunches out. Too bad I work in local government that has a $5 limit on stuff we can get from vendors, otherwise I’d get so much free food and cool swag. None of that actually influences any of my recommendations, literally comes down to best value for the feature set and if it’s something we actually need. Nothing I hate more than wasting the tax payers money on overpriced junk. Have no problem saying no thanks to vendors. My biggest pet peeve is them not giving a price guesstimate. If it’s way outside our budget, I’d like to know upfront and not waste anyone’s time. Or maybe I love the features of a certain product, but need to look at a more value oriented option.

Agreed on this being horrific with no prior communication. I'm curious, though, from someone on the sales/CS side. At my company, CSMs track outcomes with the technology/service at the onset of the sale. Like "you purchased this for ABC reason to achieve "specific" outcome (lower ticket volume, high deflection rate, faster average resolution time). All of this is *paid for*. This isn't an upselling motion. The CSMs are literally unable to find out if the tech or related service is achieving outcomes (think consulting service) if they can't meet with the main customer contact. If it's been an exceedingly long time and all emails go without a reply, many CSMs will send a blind calendar invite. Most executives we work with are grateful for this because of how busy they are. How do yall feel about this?

We have a blacklist mail rule in exchange to block everything from certain domains and reject it with a special "stop sending out deceptive spam crap" message. It's higher priority than our standard blacklist rule that doesn't give out notification messages, so it's reserved for "extra special" vendors that do stuff like this. I make sure to always accept the calendar invite before we block them and then promptly delete it from my calendar without notification.

No, we use New Relic which comes with it's own issues with billing, but the sales experience was night and day different. Lately I've also been getting bombarded by Cisco telling me that New Relic was bought out by new venture capitalists and was going to be going downhill and I should switch to AppDynamics. I've gotten the same email 4 times in the last 2 or 3 weeks though, which is annoying. I've had to make my LinkedIn private in recent months because of how much spam these sales people send me, but the damage is already done since my job title is one that gets targeted for this stuff.

Considering Cisco just bought out Splunk that operates in a similar space I'm surprised to hear they weren't pushing that hard. Most places I know of including where I work is re-evaluating all of their monitoring solutions because of how much money they cost the business so maybe they're also trying to capitalize on that. I'm guessing that's how they got mine is also from LinkedIn. LinkedIn also conveniently leaks out data from time to time. The spam from LinkedIn is unreal.

What is even worse: I had a vendor calling me about a software - I told him that we do not need it, we just implemented a similar new software (we were forced by our new owner), so in the next years we will not change anything on that front. He insisted to send me an initiation for a presentation of the software (nor an open webcast, but a one-on-one presentation by the sales colleague). I told him at least 5 times that I do not want a meeting and it is useless ro send one, because I will decline. Finally he said okay, he will still send it and the call ended. A day later I got the invitation from the sales team - "we are happy that you are interested in our product...". I declined and wrote that I never had any interest and told the other guy very specificly to NOT send me anything.

This can be a two way street though. If I buy a security product I actually kind of expect a cadence call as a sign of a good vendor. We.habe a really fantastic relationship with a few vendors because of this. It helps both of us. If we aren't getting what we want we tell them our problem and they attempt to address it. Everyone is happy. If you think you're having too many of these calls then ask for the frequency to be less often.

I will say I do appreciate a “getting started guy”. But I want a tech to assist in answering tech questions. Set up and best practices. I do NOT want a salesman to hound me about stuff all the features it “could” do. But not have a clue how it works.

I was dealing with a cell phone carrier because I was looking to make some changes. I told them exactly what I wanted, they (the salesman) got an SME involved and I sent them my questions so when we did meet I would have answers. The salesman was 15 min late to join the call, he 'forgot' to let his SME know about my questions so the meeting was essentially a waste because they didn't have answers but they thought they could answer on the fly. All the questions they did answer were 100% wrong, they had to correct themselves on the next call and that was AFTER I basically told them I found the info on their site. When I first called the packages they wanted to offer me were new so there was nothing for me to find on my own prior to the call, but between the first and second call they released the new plans and I did my research before the next call. I literally could have applied to be an SME because I knew more than they did and all I did was read their site. What a waste of time. They just want you to sign up and ask the least amount of questions, it is sad that they don't actually care about selling a good product and making the customer happy.

No, that's just being a prick. You PAID for the service and somebody wants to be engaged with you as you adopt it? The other side of this would be "I paid 100k for their software and nobody ever talked to me".

If my company buys a service that I'm to manage, I'll take a call or an interview about stuff. They want to help they can help. But record the call. And I read the docs before hand. I'm not coming for a presentation, I'm coming with my questions. And knowing me, they're deep questions. If they're trying to push back to their script / giving me "let me get back to you" the whole call, the case manager is wasting my time and I'll just bitch up the chain until I get another case manager that doesn't waste my time.
