Why do women like forearms so much?
Posted by Banditofbingofame@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 682 comments
Was in a work meeting with someone yesterday and rolled up my sleeves as it was warm.
The person I was in a meeting commented in a round about way that I have nice forearms.
While I don't really know what to do with that information, I know that many women find them attractive. I can't work out why though.
It's really got in my head. Nice to have a compliment though.
EstrogenBlockYa@reddit
Because nice shredded forearms indicates subconsciously how good a man can please her by fingering her and making her nut a consecutive amount of times, grabbing her hard whether it’s pulling her by the wrist or palming and squeezing her ass cheek feelin up her body makes her feel very wanted and turned on whereas if you have a weak grip it’s not as stimulating and it’ll give off little boy energy. Just train your grip guys don’t use gloves, when you deadlift don’t do that alternate grip, get strong enough to where you can pull your max deadlift with both hands gripping overhand. Do a lot of pull ups, deadhanging good for stretching your back muscles and decompressing the spine as well as working out your forearms
Forearms are genetics like my dad is small and doesn’t gym but I have his striated forearms but mine are bigger and juicier because I juice and workout but anyways you never know how good your genetics are until you try. I never thought I’d get this big and aesthetic but I put in the work and didn’t really chase a physique I just enjoyed the journey. If you want a good physique but dread and hate the gym it’s gonna be a lot harder for you than it was for me. You gotta make it a habit but if you don’t wanna give up your video game time or whatever hobbies you love then don’t expect a good physique any time soon. I did it because I liked it. I don’t enjoy going to the gym all the time but it has become my habit and I feel like I have to go or else I’ll regret it, and this was how I was before I even touched steroids. Habit, discipline, whatever you call it, I was just doing what I like to do the same way you’re good at your hobby/hobbies

It’s funny because I’ve got a friend who is super conscious about his foreskin, I didn’t notice anything off about it in all fairness, until randomly my brother mentioned that there was a rumour his foreskin was too long.

Its evolution. Strong defined forearms signal strength and health which implies protection and better hunting and fighting ability in a primal natural world. Women don't consciously or rationally decide what they like, its all evolution driven same with men. Men like large hips and breasts because it implies fertility and high estrogen which also tends to lead to a more nurturing personality which would make them a better mother.
Zestyclose_Zone_356@reddit
Because it is reminiscent of a penis. When they are sexy they are usually somewhat muscular, lean and veiny. Especially compared to a woman. So that is another gender difference that they notice. It is phallic and strong. Its dick like

xmagicx@reddit
In the sea of 'whats the male equivalent of cleavage or a dressing up. What can I do / what body parts do women like'
Rolled up sleeves on a shirt is always there frequently and loudly.
It isnt an unfair question based on an unusual body part. Like asking why all men like ankles on a women or why women like the little finger of the left hand of men.
infj-t@reddit
I'm sorry but what?! Little finger on the left hand 😅 is that actually a thing?
BlameableEmu@reddit
Idk about little finger on left hand. But i do like hands in general
Qwsdxcbjking@reddit
The things I get complimented on most are hands, voice and confidence.
I've broken my fingers a total of 27 (I'm pretty sure) times, they've all been broken except left thumb, so my fingers are crooked as fuck.
My voice is very flat and monotone. Not even super deep or anything, just emotionless like an early ai assistant.
I also have pretty bad anxiety.
I don't understand the compliments I get at all lol. Like why you saying nice stuff about the worst shit?

Qwsdxcbjking@reddit

BlameableEmu@reddit
Maybe your perception of yourself if worse than what others peoples is?
Qwsdxcbjking@reddit
Maybe, but I can think of things to compliment about myself that seem far better than those three. I'm tall, fairly athletic, have very pretty eyes lol, can make conversation with anyone. But it's only those other three that ever get mentioned for some reason.
DenseElephant1856@reddit
I would never compliment a guy about something he could assume as sexual/flirting. So things like voice would be safe, but athletic body would be something I would never say, unless I was openly flirting
Qwsdxcbjking@reddit
That's fair enough, just had people in relationships saying like "you have a sexy voice" and how much they love my hands lol. I don't think they were flirting though.
Crochetqueenextra@reddit

Ankles on women and forearms on men serve the same purpose. They provide a strong signal about the makeup of the rest of the body.
Actually having ankles as a woman indicates she is in good health.
Inevitable-Peanut-28@reddit
For some reason my brain assumed you were talking about having ankle bones and I started picturing a bunch of people walking around with half their foot missing.
I think I need to sleep longer
egowritingcheques@reddit
Lots of cankles as we call them here. Essentially, the calf "muscle" blends into the foot.
Vivid-Fall-7358@reddit
Long calf muscles with short Achilles tendon. Northern European genetics. Good power generation, favourable mechanics for going uphill. Poorly suited to running long distances.
Either that or someone’s just too fat to see the tendon/ankle joint.
Rapturerise@reddit
I've inherited this build from the women in my family but you've just made me feel better about it, and explained why I'm great at hill walking but dire at running.
scuzzgasm@reddit
So, muscle blending is still "poor health" cause I knew someone who was healthy af and just got shit luck in the gene deparment (the least healthy woman I know has very high calf muscles and slender ankles).
g0ldcd@reddit
No, I was also imagining women flailing about on the ground like seals, as their flipped around on the end of boneless-ankles
nevadarattler@reddit
Yep my good sir .. in ire iv heard it oft said " she has ankles like a mullingar heifer ' supposidly a sign of good breedin

Marmite54@reddit
I may have misread the comment….. I seen “ire” and “mullingar” and immediately thought you meant Ireland and the Rubberbandits …. Horse outside…? No…? Honestly if I’ve completely missed the mark, get yourself to YouTube and watch Rubberbandits - Horse Outside. You’re welcome
nevadarattler@reddit
Sorry mam but her looks dont come Into it ....
Comwapper@reddit
Yep. Ankles are generally quite a good indicator of walking ability.
Them lasses who don't have ankles generally don't get very far in life.
Marmite54@reddit
You’d be surprised! I know a lot of women who wear heels high enough that their ankles are basically non-functioning. It’s like they have trotters that start from the ball of their foot. I can’t imagine how. My feet have always been too small for heels that high, they’d have left me walking on my toes like ballet blocks
DigitalDash00@reddit
Ankles might be my last reference point for someones health

I remember one girl said I have nice belly after I told her that I plan to cut. Does that mean all girls like hairy bellies? Lmao
Daisy_Copperfield@reddit
It depends - I worked with one guy who was very wise/ kind/ intelligent (prob main attraction) and definitely “chunky and soft” as a build………..sometimes you want to know what it feels like to be wrapped up in all that, it takes all sorts! :)
Slight-Influence-581@reddit
You plan to cut?
anabolicslav@reddit
Cut fat I meant, didn’t cut any fat since then 😂 I used to have abs and was lean and didn’t get much attention from girls. Once I got into powerlifting and got more fat and bigger in general, I get girls attention all the time lol
Not sure how it works, girls are usually saying that they like abs and stuff but I literally have no abs showing, maybe top on a good day and girls like it lol
Ihavecakewantsome@reddit

bumcigar@reddit

Sea_Acanthaceae4806@reddit
My partner's hairy belly is literally one of my favourite things about him. He's put on a bit of weight so now it's even better. It's like hugging a giant teddy bear. Sometimes I lift up his top while we snuggle and smoosh my face into it. It's the beeeeest
LadyNajaGirl@reddit
Erm, yeah! Hair on a dude is nice… I mean to an extent… I don’t want to have to comb his back hair if you know what I mean. But yes, hair on stomach and chest is 🥰
justshillinx@reddit
I remember an Eastern European woman stroking my belly and saying she liked it... just a friend. Maybe it's a Slavic thing?
eternal_summer_00@reddit
True! Guy is just generalising based on a single instance
WoodSteelStone@reddit
Inductive reasoning.
eternal_summer_00@reddit
For it to work, you need way more than one instance
Jazzlike-Mistake2764@reddit
Nah this assumption is why girls don't compliment guys as much - too many jump to conclusions based on one comment
S4z3r4c@reddit
You should see the conclusions women jump to when you tell em they have nice tits.
Void_Screamer@reddit
Can't even compliment women for the colour of their underwear anymore... smh...
YooGeOh@reddit
Every single time the question is asked on reddit, "ladies, what unusual/underrated part of a man do you find sexy", a huge number of the answers are forearms. If we include non physical things l, the top 3 are
-Forearms
-rolled up sleeves (surprise...revealing forearms)
-reversing with one arm over the passenger seat
They're all so common that the question is not just merited, but makes perfect sense
Panichord@reddit
It's worth remembering that these are answers that frequently appear on reddit and are not indicative of what the wider population thinks. Yes a lot of people use reddit but many of the people who comment often are a specific demographic.
See also any thread about work/careers where like three quarters of the responses are from people who work in IT.
YooGeOh@reddit
When it comes to things like attraction, it is indicative. The only requirement is that you're a woman who is attacted to men.
When it comes to things like employment, it is not indicative because of the overlap in the type of person who works with computers, and those who are online a lot. Your comparison doesn't really work at all.
The same things are said outside of reddit as well
Panichord@reddit
Of course it is relevant, your first comment was "Every single time this question is asked on reddit". Your sample data is from reddit.
YooGeOh@reddit
That's a very simplistic way to look at it.
If someone asked reddit "why do men like breasts" (as has actually been asked here on numerous occasions), we wouldn't have to tell people to take the notion behind asking the question and the answers it garners with a pinch of salt because "its being asked on reddit" therefore the sample data is reddit.
Some questions are clearly affected by biases inherent to the type of people on reddit and how it affects their answers. Your career example is a good example of that.
Human attraction however is not.
Panichord@reddit
I'm not trying to make a wider point about human attraction I'm just saying be aware that when you read the same stuff on the same ask reddit threads it's being posted by a very small subset of the population who are active redditors who post answers that are popular on reddit. So because reddit says le forearms are the best don't conclude that is what women like, that's what redditors like.
YooGeOh@reddit
And I'm saying that youre right; with certain things you can indeed conclude that results should be taken with a pinch of salt, because they're on reddit and therefore it's a small subset of the population. However there are other things where that doesn't apply even if the answers are being posted on reddit by a small subset of people, because the topic itself transcends reddit and it ends up being just an example of what that group thinks evidenced through a small group of redditors.
For example, why do men like breasts so much. Asked on reddit all the time on a specific subreddit all the time and answered, on reddit by a small subset of the population... I'd like to see you say that 'men liking breasts' is not representative of straight men in general just because its always asked on reddit and answered by a subset of the population.
I'm saying nuance exists, and that just because it's a question and answer on reddit, doesn't mean it cannot and is not representative of something wider, even if other topics can be said to be unrepresentative of the wider population because its being asked on reddit. The same thing can have different truths applicable to it.
Panichord@reddit
Ah I don't care anymore and I'm not reading that essay, you win the debate mr epic redditor
Comwapper@reddit
Penis size is a good indicator as well.
GrMeezer@reddit
Please tell me smaller is better?
Comwapper@reddit
It depends what it is smaller than.
Smaller than the hole it's going in is good.
Smaller than a chipolata is bad.
PlayfulYip@reddit
Orrr just throwing out that maybe guys jump to conclusions because they don’t get complimented enough & aren’t used to it! If we complimented more then it wouldn’t be quite as big a deal? Like when girls compliment each other - just normal & nice
Meowskiiii@reddit
Then guys need to compliment each other more so its less weird and potentially scary for women to do so.
justherefertheyuks@reddit
I may be in the minority here but I like to compliment my friends when they get a fresh cut or when I see they’ve been hitting the fitness. I pass out compliments like candy on Halloween. But you’re right. We should do it more often. A little pick me up now and then never hurts!
PlayfulYip@reddit

Meowskiiii@reddit

PlayfulYip@reddit

Meowskiiii@reddit

ExtremelyDubious@reddit
Just to be clear, the only compliments that men don't receive very often are unsolicited compliments on their appearance from women they're attracted to.
And that's precisely because women know full well that men will interpret those kinds of compliments as a come-on, and they know that 'leading men on' is a very dangerous thing to do.
g0ldcd@reddit
This. I think most men can either remember every compliment they've ever received, or are still waiting for the first.
Blobby_89@reddit
Yeah, they should try doing it more!
georgefriend3@reddit
On the flip side, as a man I would simply never compliment anything about a woman's appearance in a professional environment, there seems far too much chance of it being taken poorly or inappropriately and causing issues.
hattorihanzo5@reddit
It depends on the compliment and how it's worded.
"I like what you've done with your hair" versus "Smashing tits love!"
PlayfulYip@reddit
Ah very true, work environments are a very different thing and not worth blurring any lines / being inappropriate! I’ve complimented a male colleague on a nice coloured shirt before and even then immediately wondered if I’d been too familiar, better safe than sorry
Jazzlike-Mistake2764@reddit
Yeah that'd be ideal, but it's not going to happen if guys keep thinking girls want to sleep with them the very first time they give them any kind of compliment
Chemtrailapplicator@reddit
Get out of your basement you freak Jesus fuck talk about a wild ass generalisation
MeasurementGold1590@reddit
Can you see the circular problem here?
PlayfulYip@reddit
Ah true, that does put me off if I don’t want to give someone the wrong idea
CaptainJamie@reddit
Not really. "Nice haircut!", "You're dressed smart today" and other casual comments are pretty normal. "You have nice forearms" is not and is bordering on inappopriate in a work setting - you wouldn't say that to someone unless you at least thought they were attractive. It's a bit much. It's like a guy saying "You have nice legs" to a woman in work, which is definitely inappropriate.
tee2green@reddit
Bc we have nothing else to go off of! When compliments are rare, we overreacted to the few we receive.
Meowskiiii@reddit
Then compliment each other!
tee2green@reddit
I compliment people all the time!
majkkali@reddit
I mean, actually women love forearms. How do you not know about it?
WoodSteelStone@reddit
I'm a woman who only likes my husband's forearms. I don't notice other men's forearms.
majkkali@reddit
Yeah because you have a husband who you love. That’s absolutely normal. I’m saying in general, imagine you’re a single woman you definitely look at men’s forearms as opposed to their legs or something. Of course people have different preferences but most women love forearms for some reason ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

ModoTheGardener@reddit
I hate to break it to you, but this may say something about the quality of your forearms.
windol1@reddit
Good point actually, if I was to work from the compliments I've had then I have the forearms of someone in their 20s.
sammyglumdrops@reddit
I think you inserted an “all” that isn’t in OP’s post mate
WoodSteelStone@reddit
You are correct. I'll remove it. The meaning of 'all women' and 'women' is the same. I'll add that I am a woman who likes my own husband's forearms but never notice other men's forearms. So, not sure if I fit OP's conjecture or not.
Upstairs_Possible821@reddit
Pretty sure your coworker likes you and is hinting. It’s a rather personal and flirtatious compliment.
What women like about forearms - well, they equate strong forearms = more masculine.
cockburnstreetwitch@reddit
Forearms have a dark and powerful magic, which make smart girls dumb.
poptimist185@reddit
This is just a humblebrag
Banditofbingofame@reddit (OP)
Honestly, yeah a little bit but I'm also utterly baffled.
I think part of it comes from having not received a compliment for years and I don't really know what to do with it.
InternationalMap6394@reddit
I can relate. I'm married and my wife never compliments me. I can live off a compliment from anyone for years. Last winter a gay guy told me I had a nice chest and asked if he could stroke it. Admittedly I was on E at the time so I fully encouraged being stroked. I will feast off that compliment until 2030 I reckon

So many haters on this post! I can't tell you why forearms are so attractive on men, but for me it's more the shape than the size. Don’t be baffled. You’ve stumbled onto something that will do you well in the future if you’re a young single man and looking to have fun.
The forearm thing is a legit thing… but it only works with long sleeved shirts that are rolled up. Not t-shirts or short sleeves… you need a long sleeve shirt and then you have to roll up the sleeves to just under the elbow (never above the elbow). Wearing a white vest and undoing the top few buttons of the shirt so it’s visible also works for some reason. I’ve been dressing like this for 20 years (married and faithful for 12 of those) and my body count when I was in my 20s was pretty extreme and I’m not particularly attractive or charismatic… that’s a less than humble brag.
I do not know why this works. I assume it is to women what low cut tops and mini skirts are to men. There are lots of theories in this post… I imagine a bit of all of them is correct. But it is a legit thing.
Use this power and knowledge responsibly.
Banditofbingofame@reddit (OP)
Thanks. I'm 13 years and faithful but it's interesting to know.
Just glad of a compliment tbh, I just didn't really understand it.
highlandviper@reddit
You should ask your partner about your forearms then.
And maybe also request they compliment you a bit more. There’s no harm in wanting to feel desired, wanted or needed. Seems like you’re baffled because you don’t feel attractive. Asking for attention is a perfectly normal thing to do in a relationship.
Banditofbingofame@reddit (OP)
I get your point but it feels odd asking for compliments. Would feel a bit forced after that and I'd feel like they were just to appease me instead of being genuine. Just me thinking through my own thoughts process.
highlandviper@reddit
True. And it’s the same reason I’ve never had the conversation with my wife. Still grates on me though.
Banditofbingofame@reddit (OP)
Yeah I'm with you. Feels like you shouldn't have to ask but if you do it negates it.
Think that's probably why yesterday is living rent free in my head.
highlandviper@reddit
It’ll always live rent free on your head dude. Just enjoy it. 3 years ago a barmaid told me I had nice eyes and shouldn’t be always wearing sunglasses. The flattery is rare. Savour it. Stay faithful to your partner and move on. Feel good about yourself.
Banditofbingofame@reddit (OP)
Oh there's no question of anything like that. Yeah it was nice tbh but that's it.
sickiesusan@reddit
Very odd comment to make at work, sounds like pure flirting and not very good flirting at that!
iThinkaLot1@reddit
It is good. Op has made a thread about it.

I concur. It is good. It’s on Reddit and lots of people commented. Including me. And it’s nice for OP.

I normally just post them on reddit and ask people for elaboration so you're doing pretty well.
MattSR30@reddit
I weight about as much as a wet towel and even I get complimented on my forearms sporadically.
I don’t think it’s as much a brag as it is a realisation there is something for everyone. I am absurdly self conscious about being a skinny man and yet plenty of women like that.
It’s not necessarily a sign that you’re bragging about something.

I'm going to guess nice forearms ties into things like = potentially strong, good at hugging/protective which is highly attractive to some women
rrrjhs@reddit
Strong arms are attractive. Strong men are attractive.
Arcadian_8@reddit
I’m not sure how to describe it. Some forearms just look particularly capable in comparison to others.
No-Character-4356@reddit
We just like them
CozyMod@reddit
I guess the same reason we like good looking lean legs?
knightsbridge-@reddit
It's hard to describe.
It's specifically rolled up sleeves that matter. Short sleeves don't get the same reaction.
I think it's the inference that an otherwise tidy and/or "proper" man has rolled his sleeves up to do something dirty/manual/difficult. Like he's disarmed himself a bit, almost. Relaxed a bit.
It's not the forearms themselves - though I'm sure yours are lovely. It's the implication. Women aren't as visual as men are - while women can appreciate a nice
as much as anyone, most women experience more mental or indirect attraction. It's about the implication.sparklybeast@reddit
That’s not true for me. Forearms are the only part of a man that can give me that purely physical lust attraction. And while a rolled shirt sleeve does show nice ones off to their best advantage, for me it most definitely is the forearms not the shirt.
IAM_THE_LIZARD_QUEEN@reddit
Same, my ex was a bin man and as a result of picking up recycling boxes all day he had the most insane forearms. I never saw him with rolled up sleeves but it never stopped me being in love with his forearms.

Sea_Acanthaceae4806@reddit
Personally I disagree with the "women aren't as visual" thing. It's cool if you don't find yourself so visual ofc.
For me short sleeves or whatever don't matter, regardless of what he's wearing I find big male forearms with lots of defined muscles and veins incredibly sexy. They're one of my favourite things to see and touch!
Inky_sheets@reddit
Exactly this, for me anyway.
zombiepiratebacon@reddit

Implication? You've used that word a few times.
radljostxx@reddit
Implication - don’t roll sleeves up and reverse because you are implying I should fall in love.
Takver_@reddit
Perfectly said.
Another one that comes up often is when men reverse a car with one arm and put the other over the back of the passenger seat, otherwise known as 'reversing arm thing'. It's not about the visuals, so much as the implied.
radljostxx@reddit
Why are we all like this…
LionLucy@reddit
It's not the arms, it's the rolled up sleeves of a formal shirt. It's the "nicely dressed but I've dressed it down" thing. Rolled up sleeves, slightly loosened ties, undone bowties left hanging.
TheFugitiveSock@reddit
This. And it’s absolutely nothing to do with the size of the forearms.
IAM_THE_LIZARD_QUEEN@reddit
I'd have to massively disagree, personally. The rolled up sleeves thing is nice and all, but a good set of forearms are hot as fuck no matter what the attire.
dearthofkindness@reddit
Add in those veins that wrap around the forearm

dappled_light_@reddit
I kind of disagree. That is definitely a hot look, but without nice forearms, it doesn't do a thing for me.
The word 'nice' here is misleading. I just don't want to say: 'you have strong, taught, veiny forearms that make my clit twitch'. Because that'd be really weird.
Strong, lean forearms are a good indicator of overall health, and useful strength. Plus, it reminds me of certain times during foreplay when I look down and see his forearms working. Its hot. The veiny thing, I don't really need to explain that.
orbtastic1@reddit
This made me laugh for some reason. I had an ex who met a mate of mine for the first time in the pub. There were loads of us and she couldn’t remember anyone’s name so from then on he was the “guy with massive forearms”.
dappled_light_@reddit
😂 I can relate to her. I'm terrible with names and faces but I won't forget good forearms easily.
orbtastic1@reddit
Haha. To be fair his forearms were big but he was useless with women. I read somewhere the only two things you can’t change with weights etc are wrist and ankle size. I know a plasterer, he has forearms like popeye
Vivid-Fall-7358@reddit
Wrist and ankle measurements are often a great indicator of potential to build muscle, natural strength, whatever you want to call it.
orbtastic1@reddit
Yeah I’m muscly at all but have larger than avg wrists and unskinny forearms. I can’t wear 40mm watches, they look like kid’s watches. Mate of mine is a couple of inches smaller and was told by his PT to accept his limitations. He’s a lot trimmer than me to be fair.
Vivid-Fall-7358@reddit
Yeah it’s actually shocking how much genetics plays into that stuff. My friend has the build of a powerlifter and was pulling 120 off the floor with ease the first time he went into a gym. Same height as me but wide and his joints are twice as big. Another guy I know lifts constantly and is still pretty small, in fact I’d be surprised if it’s even possible to strap any more muscle to his frame. Pretty strong though, which is what counts.
Own-Escape4548@reddit
Is that lb/kg? if he can do 120kg then he was lying about it being his first time in a gym
Vivid-Fall-7358@reddit
Kg, you should see the guy ha! He’s not inactive or out of shape just doesn’t hit the gym
Qwsdxcbjking@reddit
A study of almost 140,000 adults also discovered that reduced grip strength was a better indicator for early death than even blood pressure. So strong, muscular forearms might be a subconscious, evolutionary indicator that the guy is gunna stick around for a while.
mit-mit@reddit
Huh, and here I am married to a rock climber!
dappled_light_@reddit
I've always thought this. The men I've had this instant reaction to based on their forearms have always been naturally strong, healthy, and athletic. I'm not attracted to big builds, but lean, functional strength like those of swimmers or climbers' bodies triggers a strong subconscious reaction.
el_disko@reddit
This is exactly what it is! The rolled up sleeves and loosened ties with the top button undone

I think people in full shirts and trousers are seen as robotic, and not sexual beings. Once you see like a bit of skin, its like you’re seeing the real person and I think that can be attractive to some, especially women, who are probably above all seeking vulnerability/character in men.
Same way someone that looks perfect, you see a little imperfection like a small scar or pattern of freckles, its like they become three dimensional.

Shaper_pmp@reddit
Large boobs/butt and general height (of which legs are a large part) are a sign of good nutrition.
High hip to waist ratio implies wide hips, which means lower likelihood of difficulties giving birth.
Slimness and a flat stomach imply youth and general fitness, both of which are generally associated with fertility and healthy offspring.
Facial and body symmetry is also another near-universal element of attractiveness, as body symmetry is basically a quick, convenient checksum for genetic health.
Feet I have no idea about - that might just be a random paraphilia.
Speculating now, I would imagine a lot of women like strong forearms because it's a convenient, easily-visible signal indicating muscle tone and strength, which might indicate genetic fitness and physical prowess.
Also biceps and pecs (which many women also find attractive) might be selectively exercised by guys specifically to bulk them up, but few guys are in the gym specifically trying to build up their forearms, so it could be a useful indicator of their "natural" state before cosmetic modifiers are applied.
Similarly, decades ago people used to advise young men that you could tell what a woman's weight was "naturally" like (shorn of the modifying effects of lingerie, dieting, exercise, etc, with the implication the that's what she'd look like when she was older) by looking at her upper arms.
Adam-West@reddit
Yeah but earlobes. Why them?
Shaper_pmp@reddit
Earlobes are erogenous zones to touch or nibble, but what kind of weirdo finds them attractive to look at?
SkandaFlaggan@reddit
If this is a part of human nature (seen as an average of the population as a whole, knowing full well that it’s totally normal for individuals to deviate from that average), then why wouldn’t it be OK? We don’t consciously choose what we’re attracted to. Sexual attraction emerged as a way of propagating genes, it makes total sense for it to involve attributes that subconsciously indicate the possibility of viable and successful offspring. It doesn’t mean that that’s all sex and relationships are or should be for humans, but to think we’ve evolved beyond that isn’t a serious position, either.
Shaper_pmp@reddit
The trouble with these conversations is that you just can't win.
If you post about evolutionary-psychology reasons for attraction that imply objectifying value-judgments about age, fertility or the like then someone will invariably misunderstand and jump down your throat for "advocating" such a reductive, objectifying assessment of multifaceted humans, despite the fact you're clearly just neutrally describing unconscious processes that no-one has any control over...
... but if you take great pains to carefully point out that you're only describing subconscious processes and not morally advocating or justifying any particular value judgement, then polite people will misunderstand and gently probe as to why anyone could possibly object to those descriptions, or even the (completely unconscious) value judgements involved. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
The fact is, a lot of people will absolutely read a description and mistake it for advocacy, tripping straight over the Is-Ought Problem and not even realising they're doing it.
When I posted the comment above the very first thing that happened was it was instantly downvoted by a few people, and it only started getting upvoted after I added the edit explaining I wasn't justifying objectifying assessments of women's fertility or genetic fitness, or arguing that people should (consciously) use such objectifying considerations when assessing potential partners.
For the record I completely agree with you, but I'm also aware I'm writing for an audience that - at least partly - doesn't always think so clearly about the subject, or is more prone to taking offence and perceiving value judgements where none are being offered.
SkandaFlaggan@reddit
That makes sense, and you put it very clearly. Sorry for having one of the knee-jerk reactions you tried to hedge against!

*some women. And it’s because women often find body parts that aren’t directly used for reproduction to be very attractive. Like the forearms, legs, nose, neck etc.
Any body part that a man has, that is different from most women’s own bodies, and has masculine differences, can be found attractive. You’ll notice it’s never anything like belly buttons or tongues, as they look the same in men and women. But forearms usually don’t look the same in men and women. Men’s forearms tend to be less fatty, have hair, and tend to be more toned due to men’s ability to build muscle easier and faster than women.
They can also display a certain “wear and tear” that shows what they might do for a living. Like scratches, tan lines, paint, dirt, scars. This can be an attractive trait. Obviously women’s forearms have this feature too, but we are socially pressured to make our skin smooth and flawless, and if it’s not, cover it with a sleeve. So women’s forearm skin is usually better cared for and shows less of the life we lead.

So, as a woman, I get this. For me it’s specifically the inner forearm (I googled this prior and that is a thing) so like inside wrist to inner elbow - something about how soft that bit of skin is. It’s so… tender. It’s also the hairless bit, don’t know if that’s a factor but maybe.
But yes, other commenters are right that most of the time I stare at them when a sleeve rolled up.

Men’s forearms are pretty masculine to me. Have you seen women’s forearms? Delicate curves, soft skin, lovely. Men’s forearms sometimes have that vein, hairy sometimes. Guys think women look at muscular biceps but I think it’s mostly other guys that look at biceps. Women are looking at your hands, what you’re doing with them, and then their eyes wander up to the forearms and you can see the hint of muscle and masculinity.
I dunno that’s my guess at least.

Also, as to why forearms are rad: imagine sitting in a nice Chesterfield armchair. What do you do? You lean your arms against armrests, right? Feeling all cosy and nestled, right? So, that's why we like forearms. It's a promise of a REALLY decent backhug. Decent big spooning.

As much as we like to pretend our biology has little impact on us, it very much still does but mostly on a subconscious level.
krsthrs@reddit
Yeah, I can’t speak for all women but I think I definitely subconsciously see it as a safety/protection thing. It’s nice to know that you can be protected :)
Wd91@reddit
Sexual selection doesn't necessarily need to have anything to do with practical reality though. Have you seen the shit male birds of paradise have to do to get laid?
Status_Task6345@reddit
Still an indicator of health though. Try doing an that dancing shit while ill..
olivinebean@reddit
I agree but I want to know why I have a thing for a mans neck, near the chest. Am I just turned on by straight spines?
jacquedteetedape@reddit
There will always be anomalies but I would imagine you're mostly attracted to muscular and/or well defined necks and chests and not so much a scrawny/skinny neck. If so this would likely again be a strength and protection indicator.
hellomynameisrita@reddit
Oh, no, muscular necks are not the thing at all.. Lean and muscular is the thing. The minute any one area starts getting bulked up, I'm away. Particularly the neck.
olivinebean@reddit
For the record I'm more than happy with muscle but I find a overly thick neck quite off putting, see Ronaldo for a perfect example of a neck too girthy

EuphoricGrapefruit32@reddit
Men's arms and hands in general, but I do find myself checking out forearms first and foremost like. Don't think I can explain why.
Maybe it's just like someone else said, that it's like men liking the shape of a woman's ankles, neck, or a line I always remember from Northern Exposure 'the poignant vulnerability of her slender wrist' haha.. Maybe it's something about the femininity. So conversely, the masculinity of a man's forearms. A nice forearm can raise the attractiveness in a probably thought of as 'average looking' man. I find construction workers get-up sexy too (scaffolders...oof!), and military, but the operations type uniforms, not the Officer and a Gentleman smart ones (don't know the correct terminology). And I think this is about masculinity too. At least I know it's not just me with the arms..
tormented-imp@reddit
I instantly think of Gaston from beauty and the beast haha. Cartoonishly large forearms have been used in animation to convey masculinity/good looks since disney (and probably long before, that’s just my childhood point of reference!)
Happy-Thinker@reddit
Straight women. Like straight men get preprogrammed response triggers to certain stimulus. No choice the brain fires an automated pleasure response and it is what it is.
As a lesbian i would sit with a bunch of women who went absolutely batshitcrazy over what they called a "Hot" man .... My brain was , "meh, not a stimulating target image". Given what i saw them looking at, it was probably your ass they were looking at. Muscular forearms usually are attached to a fitter active body. Their brains were overriding their ability to keep quiet.
And it's actually not about you when someone perves at you. Its always about them.
hooligan_bulldog_18@reddit
My forearms are disproportionate to the rest of my arms/body like popeye but not as dramatic.

Im a straight dude but I can appreciate a guy that has nice forearms, something about them is just very pleasing to the eye.
Also, veins. Despite having gained some weight, I have very visible veins on my hands which my gf, and some other women I used to talk to, used to absolutely love them. As it is with forearms, something about veins is just very pleasing to look at.
palaire@reddit
There’s something so masculine about a man’s forearms, and I’d agree in saying as a woman that it’s just for some reason quite attractive. There’s parts of a man’s body that are just so unmistakably male regardless of size (not talking about underneath lol), like wide shoulders, wider neck, big arms, etc. and therefore naturally draw you in like a woman’s cleavage, hands, long nails etc. for a man. I wouldn’t go so far as to comment that to anyone personally but I’m sure she was flirting or likes you, sounds like she has a confident/direct personality.

It’s just something some of them notice. If you watch any of the men’s style / grooming etc. channels on YouTube, they will mention forearms being a thing for women.
As a male I notice things too about women that may be irregular, such as their ankles.

YourSkatingHobbit@reddit
I like forearms, and I’m pretty weak for shirts open at the neck as well, where you get a nice view of his throat/neck and top of the chest (unless he’s super hairy, no offence meant but it’s not for me). For me, it’s at least partly a sort-of style thing (I can’t explain it otherwise). Like, a smart shirt - bonus points if there’s a waistcoat too - something usually associated with being neat and straight-laced, made more ‘untidy’/casual by rolling the sleeves and undoing buttons at the collar. I go equally as weak for men neatly dressed in a tailored three-piece suit.
Ages ago I read a theory that women subliminally associate bare forearms with hard work, pushing up the sleeves to get stuck in to a task, diligence being a trait many find attractive.
TasniJa@reddit

I don’t know what it is but when I was crushing on my boss, seeing him roll his sleeves up drove me absolutely wild… that was ten years ago and we are getting married next year 😍 I think it was actually the sleeve-rolling action that did it for me, because it looked masculine and assertive 😂

I think you can extend this to any muscle that makes you look strong - forearms size is related to grip strength which is useful in a physical confrontation which I assume is reason why it's positive.

Once upon a time, whilst I was under a desk plugging stuff in, a rather attractive lady at work made a comment to the effect that I have a nice arse.
No-one has ever said that to me before, and I was a bit embarrassed and flustered, but the compliment was nice.
However, as u/No-Echo-8927 has rightly pointed out, if the tables were turned, I'd have been in front of HR before my feet could touch the ground.
I suppose commenting on someone's arse is more sexual than saying they have a nice haircut, but even so, the standards, they are doubled.
Banditofbingofame@reddit (OP)
What would have happened if you had reported it to HR?
SpaceMonkeyAttack@reddit
I mean, HR isn't magic. They only know someone is being sexually harassed if they happen to be there or someone reports it. It sounds like neither you nor anyone else reported the comment, so HR didn't get involved. If they had, there's no reason to assume they wouldn't have taken it seriously - the company is just as legally at risk from a sexual harassment complaint made by a male employee as from one made by a female employee.
Hypothetically, if you did report it, and HR said "it's not a big deal because you are a man", you'd have excellent grounds for a lawsuit.

I don’t know, but I think it’s an arm thing in general. Embarrassing admission: I’ve got a bit (okay, a lot) of a crush* on one of the prosecutors who indicted the former US president and he’s a triathlete. There was a video of him in short sleeves at a Florida airport that I posted on one of my social media accounts (for newsworthy reasons, obviously!) and suddenly women were tripping all over themselves in the replies about his arms. I can’t explain it, it doesn’t feel rational but yet I too was thinking the exact same thing as the women who swarmed my post 😆 It’s not why I find him attractive, it’s just an added bonus.

There is a big contrast between men’s and women’s forearms. It is one of those striking differences. Big or obviously muscular forearms connote desirable masculine strength.
Also, forearms get commented on because they are more visible than other bits women like. Not much chance of you showing your thighs in a meeting, I expect.

Someone once told me the reason so many men like feet is because when you were a crawling baby your mums feet would be your goal for getting to her and once you got to her feet you would likely be picked up and cuddled and we carry that positive association through to adulthood where it becomes sexual.

Now imagine a man compliments a woman on her body in a professional setting
Banditofbingofame@reddit (OP)
I complimented a women in her new haircut last week and the world didn't explode.
duckduckducknonono@reddit
Chill out?
You’re the guy posting on a national sub because the opposite sex said something about your forearms… apparently.
Banditofbingofame@reddit (OP)
Yeah and just trying to understand it.
Other guy is inventing some nonsense about some hypothetical that didn't happen.
duckduckducknonono@reddit
Judging by this sentence - I'm going to go ahead and assume that your apparent encounter would have the same verbiage. Chill out - not happening is inherent to hypothetic.
Banditofbingofame@reddit (OP)
I'm fine with it, I was re-enforcing the point. But if that's all you have to add then there we go.
JewpiterUrAnus@reddit
Of course I am. Ha. Ok mate.
JewpiterUrAnus@reddit
I’m chilled.
I’m just saying, arms are a more direct part of the body than ‘hair’
You go comment on a woman’s arms in a team meeting and see what happens. Hair is quite a formal and safe thing to comment on and IMO is not looked at the same as if you were to comment elsewhere on the body.
Banditofbingofame@reddit (OP)
How is that gaslighting?
I provided a precise example of what you said couldn't happen.
JewpiterUrAnus@reddit
By ironically choosing a formal and quite casual area of the body to compliment.
How convenient
Banditofbingofame@reddit (OP)
How are forearms formal?
BetterTheDevil909@reddit
"gaslighting", perhaps the most overused (and wrongly used) buzzword in the last decade.
JewpiterUrAnus@reddit
Ok

You can get a lot more done than you can with two.

My partner says she likes them because it reminds her of how she feels when they're wrapped around her :)
duckduckducknonono@reddit
Context is important.
ddmf@reddit
Haha, very true.
Faithiepoo@reddit
Why do people like boobs? Attraction is primal
Lybertyne2@reddit
Because they indicate a woman's ability to feed a baby.

Hey, who can resist the allure of a well-toned forearm? It's just one of life's little mysteries!
borokish@reddit
Next time you're hot in an office meeting....lob your cock out and see how many compliments you get.
allaboutwanderlust@reddit
You could have ugly forearms. It’s just something nice to look at. Take the compliment:)
Gralenis@reddit
Report to HR for sexual harassment.
No, but seriously, women would instantly and rightly complain if you complimented their legs for example.
Just another double standard.
winobeaver@reddit
There have been plenty of times when I have complemented women's appearances in the workplace and they have not felt the need to report me to HR.
averageinformant@reddit
If OP doesn't feel the need to report to HR let's leave it there.
I don't understand this whole concept of, "Just because it offends you now I've decided it offends me now."
Gralenis@reddit
Because that's not how it works.
How else do you think third party reporting work?
When people are joking with each other as mates, but someone else overhears and doesn't like it?
averageinformant@reddit
But in this case OP doesn't feel like he was harassed (correct me if I'm wrong). Why do people love causing drama.
It reminds me of a time when someone was upset I didn't feel racism because of a joke. I found it it hilarious but they couldn't understand why I wasn't offended and wouldn't report it. I'm an ethnic minority.
It feels like we've come at a stage when we're also told what to and not to feel offended by these days lol.
Gralenis@reddit
Exactly my point, I agree with you.
However, if it was roles reversed people would be up in arms.
averageinformant@reddit
I'm sorry but this phrase irks the hell out of me. Just creates more battles between gender, races etc. If something makes you feel uncomfortable fair enough, tell them or report it to HR if you feel the need to.
People have different level humour, banter call it whatever. People as different thresholds. If they're a grown up let them decide for themselves if they want to be offended.
Dry-Yogurtcloset-796@reddit
People like this guy are frothing at the mouth over hypothetical situations where they could get back at women and report them to HR but they're fat losers who would never be in that situation, so they push this bullshit on other people.
symbolsofblue@reddit
Curious, why legs? Wouldn't the equivalent be their forearms, too?
Gralenis@reddit
I used that an exmaple as its a well known equivalent that has been historically popular to compliment.
symbolsofblue@reddit
Does it matter if women don't feel sexually harassed if you compliment their arms?
I just can't see how you believe that arms and legs are equivalent.
Suggestedrelative@reddit
To be fair it depends on the relationship. Not all women hate men. Some do still like to flirt. Hence this post
spik0rwill@reddit
Sounds like a flex to me.

onechipwonder@reddit
Big tough forearms with decent amount of fluffy arm hair like those of my husbands. That gives the best snuggling platform!
And yeah... looks sexy too when carrying all the shopping bags in one go...

Maybe there’s some evolutionary reason? Some studies have indicated grip strength, or lack of it, can be linked to premature ageing and linked to health. Forearm muscles play a part in grip strength, and having defined forearms could indicate strong grip, and potential good health. When looking for someone to partner up with, you would want them to be healthy so they don’t fall ill and become dependent on you for care.
Or, they just like them because that’s what they like. Either or.
Goldman250@reddit
Because General Grievous has always been one sexy mofo.
Oh wait, I misread. I thought you meant four arms.
