Expensive battery replacement

Took my son's car (2021 VW Up!) to a VW garage for an annual check. Had them check the stop/start feature because it wasn't working. They said the battery should be replaced, and quoted more the 300 euros for the work. We said no initially because I could get a battery for about 100 euros and drop it in myself. But the salesperson said the car's electronics had be recalibrated to the battery. I called bull, but in the end the garage replaced the battery. Is it a real thing with new cars that you have to recalibrate them when you change a battery?
