The salesperson wasn’t bullshitting you. Technically, you are supposed to used VCDS/ODIS to tell the various modules you have a new battery, especially if the capacity or battery type changed. Will it really matter? Who knows.

Reason is when your battery reaches a certain age your car will act accordingly and start modifying the amount of of volts that go to it. Big thing with Audi and Volkswagen. But how effective is this? Not sure

I'm on year 3 without telling my car it has a new battery. No issues so far. I did get a battery as close to oem as possible though. I also believe cars with auto on/off are more sensitive to it.

just a caveat, but some cars have auxiliary batteries just to assist with the stop and start feature. sometimes people will get volt indicators on their dashboards and it's usually for these mini batteries as opposed to their main 12v

Buy the appropriate replacement battery at Costco - they have a book you can consult or ask the guy at the tire/battery counter. It's H8 or H9 AGM I think.

I don't know if that's true or not, I haven't noticed that, but its believable. I know it changes depending on the type of battery. Deep cycle vs SLA vs lithium, that kind of thing. Idk that it does much else.

Yup or you can use ODBEleven which is an app paired with a Bluetooth odb2 module can also do it. From what I understand if you don't calibrate the new battery it won't charge and last as long if you don't calibrate it.

Id imagine they charge via voltage regulators so I cant imagine that the car would need that much tuning. I sort of doubt they are timing each cell but man I dont know enough to be certain and you shouldnt what I say as fact because honestly I am unsure. Though Id imagine if a bank disappeared it would ask you a few questions.

Ya technically. But you're just telling it what battery it is. If it's the same kind of battery you had before you don't really need to do anything. You can do it yourself with obd11 or vcds

You need to reset the battery because modern cars adjust the alternator charging current based on the estimated capacity of the battery. Older cars will blindly dump a ton of amps into a battery which can cause them to generate hydrogen gas regardless of capacity/age. Modern cars will often estimate the battery capacity/aging and adjust the charging behavior as a result. If you never reset it then they will just treat your battery as if it was extremely depleted, usually meaning extremely slow charging which will cause a new battery to age much faster as lead-acid/AGM really only wants to be held at 100% charge all the time.

I said you would still tell the car it's a new battery. How you do that is going to be different between brands and models. In Audi/VW for example you would change the BEM code by 1 digit in VCDS or OBDeleven.

For the Mustang, you just need to do a simple start up procedure to reset the battery management software. At least you don't need to plug anything into the OBD

Turn it on but don't start it. Flash the high beams 5 times and then pump the brakes 3 times. Not too fast and not too slow. A few seconds later you should see an icon flash in the instrument cluster and then a message will pop up saying the battery software has been reset.

No but once you put in a new battery you'll have to do a sequence in the car to reset the battery system so it recognizes your new battery. I forgot the sequence but if you go on Mustang6g.com and search you should gind it

Actually now that I think about it, I've replaced it twice in 7 years. I found some YouTube videos that said Ford started doing it in 2011 but not all 2011 Fords have it. They showed two styles of sensor one of which will be attached to the negative battery terminal if you have BMS, and fwiw mine does not appear to have either one.

When I was at VW in the USA, iknow the Atlas had battery modules that you need to calibrate again when you install new battery so the new battery doesn't overcharge or under charge and so other modules know a new battery is installed. Also get rid of the start stop, as a mechanic i think it's pointless, won't save you gas and more wear on battery and starter. There's no difference in the batteries we installed in start stops and normal no difference in starter motors

Bro i have a GLI and went thru the same thing literally a few days ago here are some of your options -Go to an auto shop buy a battery run it as is most codes will clear on their own. ( watch a youtube video on how to clear some of them its easy). Start/stop wont work and the battery life is gunna be shortened. But if ur in a pinch for cash - some stores here in the use have the capability of reprogramming for you im sure EU does the same - OR buy the new battery and go online and buy an OBDELEVEN it’s currently on sale for $80 on amazon and you can reprogram it yourself. And now you have the option of skipping the dealer for any other maintenance you feel they charge to high in labor or comfortable doing yourself I did this and drove my car 45 ish miles the day I replaced my battery. Assisted driving was off and so was start/stop. But i got me there and it doesn’t hurt the car short term. Then next day’d my OBDeleven and reprogrammed.

I coded out the rubbish stop/start function and bought a non AGM battery for much less money. The car complained for a few days throwing all sorts of errors, but before I could borrow a vcds cable off a friend it sorted itself.

My $250 BMW battery was the same way. Needs a tube to vent Hydrogen gas and the computer needed to be reset. Crapped out on the side of the road while being interrogated by Texas State Trooper on I 40. Wouldn't start again, Trooper leaves saying good luck. AAA was non existent and some guy with a wrecker just happened to show up and give us a jump. Bought a batter at walmart in Oklahoma , got some jumper cables and used that to jump start the car for the rest of the trip. Took it to the dealer in Florida and got a OEM battery, Took the bought battery back to walmart for a refund.

As the battery ages the software tells the alternator sends more voltage to the battery to charge it back up. This will result in overcharging the new battery which will shorten its lifespan

Maybe. I know BMW has for years required that you "register" a new battery, because the charging system adapts to the age of the battery and when you replace it, it will treat the battery as if it is a 5-6 year old, on its last legs battery instead of a new one. Also, above and beyond that, if you change the size (Ah) or chemistry (replacing a wet lead-acid with AGM for example) you are supposed to also input that information into the car as it uses different charging curves for different batteries. Will it catch on fire or stop working if you don't? No, but you might experience slightly reduced battery life.

It likely uses an EFB/AGM battery as well, start-stop function requires a more expensive battery. I would replace the battery, and disable start-stop... its a useless feature that just results in excess wear and tear even with the beefed up components. Had a battery last 4 years no problems - but start-stop was disabled thru software on the car. Its a little harder now but you can buy a module that will disable it automatically when the car is started.

The ECU and immobilizer need to be reset. At home, it sometimes works by waiting 15-30 minutes before connecting the new battery after disconnecting the old one. Otherwise, you'll need a tow. 300 euros is reasonable if they used a high-quality replacement battery.

That is not true at all, on VWs at least. They work just fine without calibration. The battery's lifespan might be harmed but it will function normally.
