This may sound really silly, but could the Sycamore Gap tree be glued back on and still function?

To clarify, would it be theoretically possible to glue only the outer ring of bark with a really, *really* strong glue so that the xylem and other functional parts in the central part of the trunk could naturally reconnect?
Would that allow the usual water and nutrients to still travel up the trunk and sustain its growth? Or is the external ring of bark also necessary for sustained growth?
