Not sure about a law but I'd bring back the scaffold for murderers, rapist and pedophiles.

And how does the fact the death penalty doesn't mean less crime necessarily happens impact you opinion?
View on Reddit #947445

thesnapening@reddit

Doesn't impact my opinion at all. If someone is caught with child that's guilt, is someone has dna evidence against them on a body thats guilt. As I said to the other guy if your child gets assaulted by a pedophile let's see if your opinion changes then, I guarantee it will.

Okay, sure. I’m not going to disagree with you all that strongly on the point of ‘if we could, without any doubt in any way shape or form, absolutely know that someone had committed such an awful offence, we should execute them as their crime is that awful’. I personally wouldn’t agree on that, but I can see that argument, especially from somebody who has been affected by a crime of that sort - and I’d imagine even more so if the perpetrator was completely remorseless or a huge number of other potential things. But the thing is… you can’t convict with that level of certainty. We’re not many years off (if any at all now really) from fake photorealistic footage, pretty much indistinguishable from real footage. Witness testimony can be accurate, but *not 100% of the time*. Hell - even DNA evidence. Although it gets more complicated here, on the topic of rape, people can *absolutely* plant evidence of that sort. Be it the perpetrator, or in the cases of things like rape which are fabricated by the accuser. (Not saying that is frequent, but if you took a large number of cases, it would probably happen one or more times). Hell, even *confessions* can be coerced - be it by police, the actual perpetrator forcing somebody to take the fall for them, by people who may be mentally ill and uncertain of what occurred (or mentally impaired at the time of the incident). And so… where do you draw the line for absolute, unequivocal proof? It is *factually accurate* that a percentage of all sentences are incorrect, and an innocent person has been convicted. How do you guarantee such a high burden of proof (in law) to prevent innocent people being killed? Or, do you think there is an acceptable amount of *COMPLETELY INNOCENT* people who can die, so long as the murderers, rapists, and paedophiles do as well? How many people is that? Where do you draw the line to allow the government to kill innocents, just so that the criminals die too? And how is that NOT murder in and of itself? I’m genuinely, truly sorry as to what you and your family have been through. I can’t imagine the impact that’s had on all of your lives, and how awful that must be. But it still doesn’t make a viewpoint like that for the death penalty any more moral to argue for, in my view.

Which of the two following statements do you agree with? 1) The government is never wrong 2) The government should be allowed to decide who dies

Where did I imply that? As I said if your child gets assaulted by a pedophile then come back and tell us "nope pedophiles shouldn't be killed".
View on Reddit #950067

GregorF92@reddit

> Where did I imply that? > > If you support the death penalty, you must agree with one of the following 2 statements: 1) The government is never wrong, and would never sentence an innocent person to death 2) There is an acceptable number of innocent people who can be sentenced to death to justify the existence of the death penalty. If you don't agree with these statements, then why do you support a death penalty?

The law that says: "If you decide to do the responsible thing and sleep in your car instead of drink driving, then you should get arrested and charged with a crime that has practically identical consequences as drink driving."

Any law relating to drug dealing. Listen hear me out. I personally think they should legalise all drugs to get rid of the illegal market altogether no profiteering for criminals less strain on the police drives/government agencies. Because no matter what we do people will consume drugs no matter what and the war on drugs is unwinnable.
View on Reddit #949114

Lessarocks@reddit

Will it get rid of the illegal market though?will the drug dealers just give up their lucrative and tax free income for a straight life and start selling legally? That would require a complete culture change on their behalf and I’m not sure they’d do it. I suspect that they’d start seeking more potent drugs to sell and cheaper versions of the taxed drugs. I just can’t see them opening up a legal drug shop on the high street and paying tax like good little citizens.

Legalise murder, people would be a lot better behaved if they knew their life was at risk, also a lot of people might start to look after their bodies instead of being fat slobs.

The serving of half a sentence for good behaviour. I know there’s a lot of things wrong with the concept of prisons but it is ridiculous. You can willingly commit a string of serious offences, get sentenced to 6 years and then get a pat on the back for not attacking anyone whilst your inside. I’d rather they just added time on if they carry on being dicks.
View on Reddit #945574

OkTry4424@reddit

Remember, and this is massively misunderstood, that a sentence is still a sentence. People complain about people with life sentences being let out after 30 years when they're still relatively young, 50 say if they were convicted when they were 20, but you're still on licence for the rest of your life. You can't leave the country, and have to check in regularly. You're under constant pressure from the probation service and even the most minor transgression is straight back to prison.
View on Reddit #945948

atraindriver_UK@reddit

You do understand that most people don't care about that, don't you? As far as most people are concerned a convicted person should be in prison for the entire X years they are sentenced to. End of.
View on Reddit #946827

RoyTheBoy_@reddit

Yeah but we make a lot of other decisions based on logic rather than emotions so I think we should extend that to prison sentencing too. If an approach aimed at rehabilitation rather yan punishment works we should be looking at that.
View on Reddit #947400

quantum_splicer@reddit

To add onto the logic : 1. It's expensive to keep someone in prison 2. They are very limited in what they can contribute to society e.g productivity ; if we keep people locked up it harms society by using up more economic resources that could go to other government services to help those in need. 3. If someone no longer presents X amount of risk to society , we should let them out with monitoring to let them contribute to society for societies sake . We acknowledge that parole boards will generally evaluate things carefully ; but we acknowledge that parole boards exhibit the same fallibility of its members the ability to make mistakes

Do away with the bit that allows time spent on a tagged curfew to count against a custodial sentence at the same time. I think one day on a tag of over 8 hours curfew = 1/2 a day off a sentence.

I'd probably say the bedroom tax, or as it's more formally known, the "under-occupancy penalty." It basically affects social housing tenants by reducing their housing benefits if they have extra bedrooms. It’s a pretty contentious issue that has sparked debates for quite some time. It seems to disproportionately affect vulnerable groups like those with disabilities and low-income families, which is a major concern. You'd think that with all the criticism, there might be some changes made to address these issues, but it still remains in place.
View on Reddit #945072

GregorF92@reddit

You can reform the bedroom tax though. Fair enough for those who have disabilities and may need the additional room for a carer who may frequently stay over, but if you have a family of 1 parent and 2 children, and one of those children moves out, why should the 2 remaining occupants have a 3 bedroom flat/house, when others may need it more?

Plenty of people clogging up prisons, and also getting either hooked on smack (more heroin addicts leave prison than enter it) or getting drawn into more serious organised crime because they simply dealt a bit of weed. I don't smoke weed, and while there's plenty of bullshit about its effects that still gets fed to kids doing the rounds, the main issue with it is that it makes people lazy and unmotivated. I've seen a few mates totally fail to realise their ambitions, nothing crazy, stuff that was well within their capability, because they turned into chronic stoners. But I'd fully back it being legalised tomorrow.
View on Reddit #945877

aaron2933@reddit

Yeah I've seen alot of people becoming addicted but claiming they're not because it's not addictive and then not realising their potential. Sad to see
View on Reddit #946036

OkTry4424@reddit

Exactly. But so are plenty of legal things. If you brought an alien to Earth and gave him a quick rundown of various drugs people use, with use cases of each, he'd likely conclude - Crack and heroin - nasty shit. Stop people using that. Prescription painkillers - very helpful, but you're _way_ too lax about their use. Why are you ignoring the addiction and dependency issues when you're so hot on the other stuff? Alcohol - looks like a laugh and great in moderation, but again, you're way too willing to let shit slide when it comes to issues around that. A random Tuesday night in most cities at kicking out time is like UFC in the street. What the hell are you doing? Ecstacy - fine. A great example of how you humans fear new things though and over react. Weed - not great, not terrible. I wouldn't give it to kids but why the hell have you banned that but booze is legal? Tobacco - the one thing you got right. It's not a problem in the immediate term so you've let people make the choice, but you've gone hell for leather in pointing out how deadly it is. Why the hell didn't you even _consider_ this for any of the other things?
