how capable are modern crossovers offroad compared to old school 4x4s?

So I recently bought an old Jeep Wrangler TJ. Base model, manual transmission, open diffs, the only option it has is the 4.0 inline 6. I am new to offroading so I haven't pushed it to the limits yet, but I have had the opportunity to try a Bronco Sport on some of the trails here in Arizona and found it very capable. Are modern crossovers able to keep up and potentially do better than basic old school 4x4 trucks offroad due to the advances in traction control and other software aids? I'd imagine the Bronco Sport and any other similar crossover has a leg up on my Wrangler and other old 4x4s because although both generally have open diffs, TCS can sort of simulate a locker nowadays. Anyways, just wondering about people's experiences. Is software enough to make up for the lack of solid axles, a "real" 4wd system, etc?
