There is supposed to be a documentary coming soon…I can’t wait to see it. Compared to what’s going on today they didn’t do anything wrong- and the shame caused one of them to commit suicide - just awful. They are a guilty pleasure - can’t help it !

uglyugly1@reddit

The fucked up thing about it was, they actually could have done the music themselves. They claimed that their manager gave them no choice but to go along with utilizing the pre-recorded tracks. Show me a broke 20 year old who wouldn't have gone along with that. https://youtu.be/ogX8s2HsO2A?si=cco1yUaR0oa_6lw4 Also, there is *far* more electronic fuckery in today's pop music, than they were even capable of doing in the late 80s. We have turds like Motley Crue 'touring' with a singer who can't sing a note, other members of the band suffering from various ailments, and widely understood to be using 100% backing tracks. People are still paying thousands to see their 'shows', and nobody gives a shit.

Vericatov@reddit

They could have, but they really didn’t have great voices to begin with. There’s a video out there of them trying to make their own music in a studio sometime after the fallout, but it does not sound well. Of course, today they would just be Autotuned. That’s the unfortunate part. They had the look, but not the voice. Hence why they had other people sing the songs, but today they would just use Autotune.

I've seen that video, and I agree with you. Did you watch the clip that I linked? It's Fab Morvan live, and he's actually really good.

Ok, that wasn’t bad. First time seeing that video and I had no idea he was still preforming. Glad to see he’s doing well.

My guess is, the first studio video they did was probably before they'd had a chance to work on their voices. I was really happy to see the clip I posted. He looks like he's done well for himself.

I bought their CD *after* they got busted, was not a lot of money! I got a funny look from the sales lady so I explained that I don't care who sang, I simply like the music, girl, you know it's true! I could say hush and maybe try to make some bad song name puns, blame it on the rain or something, but they were only in it for the money. And I just queued up their album instead.

With the amount of artists getting busted for lip-synching, plus auto-tune and other tricks, the entirety of pop music seems fake anyway.
View on Reddit #10531550

eamus_catuli_@reddit

Generally though, even if the artist is lip syncing or auto-tuned, it’s still actually them singing the track, just “enhanced”. Rob and Fab straight up weren’t singing and they lip synced to other studio artists. Still think MV got the raw end of the deal though.

It's still amazing to me how pushing a wrong button destroyed a music career that probably would have netted tens of millions of dollars over time. To see it all just go poof! on live TV in the space of a few seconds. Of course ripping up a picture of the pope had a similar outcome... but this was just a simple fuck up.
View on Reddit #10545010

loquacious@reddit

> Of course ripping up a picture of the pope had a similar outcome... Sinead O'Conner definitely got done dirty for that. She was calling out systemic abuse and coverups in the Catholic Church. Today it hardly seems outrageous but back then everyone lost their damn minds about the whole thing and canceled her whole career. The Milli Vanilli thing wasn't even in the same class of an event or controversy. They intentionally and completely faked being singers or musicians and barely could even dance. The music itself was also forgettable and not great even if there wasn't a scandal about the lip syncing.
View on Reddit #10546962

Exit_Lucky@reddit

A bunch of us used to get high and watch SNL when I was 15/16 if there wasn’t a party. When we watched Sinead O’Conner live ripping up the picture we were like hmm that’s weird. Mind you, I pretty much grew up pwt so I wasn’t offended and had my own views of religion. But I never knew why she did that and at that time the news stations just said she was against the church. It makes me sad that it took 15 years for me to know exactly what she meant and I wished I would have understood then to show her more support.
View on Reddit #10570177

destroy_b4_reading@reddit

I'm pretty sure they actually sang in the studio, their producer/manager just brought in some ringers to re-track the vocals without telling them.
View on Reddit #10551387

loquacious@reddit

I don't have any citations, but I'm pretty sure they didn't. As soon as I heard them speak for the first time on TV I was just like "WTF? That's not even close to the voices on the album." Granted I didn't really care about them back when they were charting and relevant and I care even less about them now. Granted I'm hipster scum that's been into weird experimental and electronic music and heavily anti-pop since I was a kid, so no one really cares about my opinion and I'm fine with that.

They said it: The context was their description of their music as the “modern rock and roll.” In the same context they said to me, “(We are) the new modern rock and roller. I’m the new Elvis. I’m the new Roy Orbison at this time. I’m the new Beatles. . . .” At the duo’s insistence, Todd Headlee, Milli Vanilli’s ex-manager, was present during the interview, ostensibly to protect them from just such opinions and their “poor grasp of the language.” Headlee never interrupted to modify or dilute these remarks. https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1990-12-08-ca-5229-story.html

ExpensiveSyrup@reddit

99% of singers/bands on American bandstand in the 80s were lip syncing. I’d say it was already pretty normalized. I think the only issue with MV was lip syncing to other people singing and pretending it was your voice. They were the first to get caught.
View on Reddit #10568084

HillbillyEulogy@reddit

There's a huge difference between musicians and entertainers. Some of the entertainers DO have musical ability and some of the musicians ARE entertaining. But Milli Vanilli is entertainment. Now with that said, the most entertaining thing that ever happened by them was their [backing track glitching](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvPXmkYMHFg) while they were on stage. You can literally watch their career die in real time.

In the 70s no one cared, especially with European dance music. But the 90s was the era of "authenticity" For what it's worth, Rob and Fab got the raw eggs if the deal. They wanted to sing for themselves but the producers wouldn't let them.

View on Reddit #10541833

Iron_Chic@reddit

It's weird. People felt betrayed back then, the record company even refunded money if you sent your Milli Vanilli cassette back to them. It seems people don't care about that these days. Similar to how MC Hammer got dragged over the coals for being a "sellout" in the rap community because he accepted endorsement deals. These days, rappers sell themselves out for MUCH less and everyone's OK with that.
View on Reddit #10536902

Or Pearl Jam being a sellout because they were commercial. Fast forward two years and *everyone* sounded like Pearl Jam
View on Reddit #10540592

waxmuseums@reddit

The Grammy was a big part of it, because they had to return it so it was seen as a bigger disgrace or whatever. And I think that era in general was rife with scandals, hated musicians, and quick falls from grace in pop - in a period of less than two years there was the Sinead OConnor incident, Terence Trent Darby saying he was more important than the Beatles, Vanilla Ice lying about his background, Hammer’s rise and fall, NKOTB, Axl Rose constantly making headlines on tour, the rise of a golden age of adult contemporary, MJ reaching a point where he wasn’t merely a little bit weird… and at the same time there was a rise in more artistically-respected music in alternative rock and hip hop and heavy metal, which the pop was negatively compared with, so Milli Vanilli got a lot of attention because they were pointed to as a clear example of how flashy and superficial pop supposedly was. But also i remember there was some conflict and Frank Farian got mad and had a press conference why went public with the fact that they weren’t the actual singers, and I don’t think anything like that happened with Boney M

A friend and I were going to see them in concert as part of the Club MTV tour. Hours before the show, we learned it was canceled and tickets weren't being refunded. The good part was the show was at Hersheypark, so we just spent the rest of the day there. There was no explanation as to why it was canceled..then days later the news of them lip synching broke and I figured that's why the show was canceled. It was disappointing to hear what they did, but the promise of fame and money make people do dumb things.

I know it’s not exactly the same, but if you know anyone who is a music production enthusiast ask them to show you Logic Pro X or Pro Tools (or any modern DAW) and see how easy it is to create pro-level music now. Automated drummers, millions of pre-recorded loops, midi software instruments that can emulate any instrument and even an entire orchestra, the ability to record take after take and take the best little slices of each to create a single track, et al! It will completely demystify the process and make it seem far less impressive.

Audio nerd checking in: Long before there was a ProTools plugin to correct vocal notes / timing, the engineers before my class had all kinds of neat ways to fix a bunk note or slightly off timing. Everything from using MIDI control of an Eventide to laying the vocal track off to a second tape machine and then thumbing / pushing the reel for that one little segment. But the best trick has always been to have the vocalist do it again. We don't get paid rockstar wages, they do. So let them do their job instead.

All of you in here saying that people lip sync all the time these days so it’s not a big deal are missing an enormously important distinction. IT WAS NOT THEIR OWN VOICES THEY WERE LYP SYNCING TO! When you win a Grammy over people who actually were legit, it is a scandal. I don’t know that anything like this has happened before or since. They don’t deserve to be executed for it, but let’s not pretend they weren’t enormous frauds who made money off of other people’s singing and won an award over groups who actually sang and played their own music. Was justified for being a big story like it was.

The producer was the real fraud and those two were just the marks that he conned. It was an open secret. Performers lip sync all the time. Who cares, right?

I was a teenager at that time, I should have been part of the demographic most destroyed by this and I didn't care and didn't understand why anyone else did.

Really? My kids are ‘tweens and found out recently Olivia Rodrigo can’t really sing and they were disappointed but moved on fairly quickly.

I still spin my Milli Vanilli ablum. Great tunes, no matter who really sang them.

Messy situation, but the group as they were still produced great songs. Girl, you know it's true.

Could never understand why people didn’t want to listen to them anymore because it wasn’t them actually singing - you either like the song or you don’t, right?

Well, the problem is it made me wonder who I really liked. The lip synchers who danced and just mouthed singing, or the anonymous singers who were actually recording what I was listening to… ?

There was a good explanation of it on The Moth by the remaining living member. Very interesting and I highly recommend. https://youtu.be/u-MeUmpLH-s?si=z_CZoIO1F8DyfIE-

Frauds yes, but hey everyone does it..especially in today’s “music”, no judgement but fake sells. Case in point, [China](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/47155-chinese-officials-make-girl-hide-behind-camera-during-opening-ceremonies) did same thing with those little girls many years ago, and ppl treated it like no big. That is messed up to do to a little kid though. But, IIRC, the Milli Vanilli team just had that stage appeal the actual singers allegedly lacked - hence the swap. Right wrong or indifferent, the music was fun, it made people happy. The whole incident and the fall out, however, was not worth the tragedy that followed.

They were entertainers. Period. Nothing wrong with that either if that's what you desire which, let's face it, a lot of people do. Some folks just want to get lost in the therapeutic relief of being entertained. Escapism maybe.

Honesty. Did it actually matter who sang the songs? Considering the amount of autotune and studio polish on most vocalists, does it *really* matter? That album was a jam.

lawrat68@reddit

I guess it was the Grammy but it seemed so silly. Some or nearly all of the group being replaced by studio musicians had been going on since the 1960s and nobody cared. Was Tony Burrows ever the stage singer on tv shows for all those one hit wonders he sang in the 1970s? It felt like pumped up controversy.

Neither did i... I mean, who the fuck cares...? I liked some of their songs, could care less who sings them, or what they are called. The fact that the guys who fronted it where fake or lip-synching doesn't make the songs/music worse.

Wow, I remember watching MTV when it actually had music and music industry news when Milli Vanilli was exposed. There were even news scenes of a steam roller flattening a pile of their cds in a public street. That and John Stewart was covering sports news and downtown Julie Brown was doing interviews. Honesty, their music was fine but they were mostly hated because they lip synched to their own music on live television and made a spectacle of themselves.

At this point the whole thing seems pretty mild. There's barely a pop star out there who isn't heavily modified by advanced software.

What I remember from watching the infamous broadcast was thinking that the must have pissed off the crew. The recording is left playing while it is stuck and it goes on for ages. As someone who was a stage manager, that would never be allowed to keep playing. I would have turned the sound off immediately. the only way it happens is if the crew are angry and want some payback.
View on Reddit #10536287

Initially the problem was that they were miming at the show and it was only later that it transpired they hadn't sung on the album at all. By today's standards its pretty tame. I'd say alot of "artists" mime at concerts. Madonna was certainly miming when I saw her in London in the 90s. and I remember Bob Geldof miming the wrong words on tv once. I get the feeling that most people mime on tv shows, not Ed Sheeran, he was very clearly singing live when I saw him on Graham Norton. I feel a bit sorry for MV.

Honestly, I am impressed by how well they pulled it off, until they didn’t. I don’t recall anyone suspecting that they were weren’t the actual performers until the “mistake”. I tagged along to one of their concerts and the tickets were pretty good. You could not tell they were lip syncing the entire concert. Maybe now with the internet, there would have been some rumors about it, IDK? It was a big scandal at the time but looking back and considering how pop music is now, I don’t think it was a big deal.
View on Reddit #10535199

My cousin was practical with the scandal: she was given the chance to return her tape for a refund and did so while dubbing a copy beforehand. She got her money back and still got to listen to the music afterwards. I think that was a common reaction: the lipsyncing during performances might have been disappointing, but it didn't change the music that people liked in the first place. And it wouldn't even be a scandal these days. It kind of sucks that it more or less ended their career back then.
