Aside from financial reasons, why would you holiday within the UK?

This isn’t supposed to be snobby. If you prefer holidaying in the UK to going abroad, it doesn’t affect me, I’m just curious why. I’ve got friends that will go to Centre Parcs for a week and spend more than I did visiting Niagara Falls. It baffles me - you can go to most places in Europe for the same cost as most staycations.

Actually it's the other way around - About 20% of China's GDP is exports, versus 28% of ours. And even adjusted for consumption, China produces more CO2 per capita than we do.

Have you got a source for that per capita number? I've seen a [study](https://www.leeds.ac.uk/news/article/4576/nearly_half_uk_carbon_footprint_is_from_overseas_emissions) that suggests we only report about 54% of our true emissions and that 46% of carbon attributable to the UK is bundled up in other countries emissions.

As said earlier much of China’s emissions is western goods. To compare by GDP is nonsense. UK exports of services cannot compare with Chinas export of electronic goods or clothing in terms of CO2 emissions. They are emitting on our behalf. China produces many of the metals required for solar power and wind turbines which are all mined producing CO2. They have most of the world’s rare earth metals and have been buying the mining rights for metals such as cobalt all across Africa. The whole point is irrelevant to the OP anyway. To compare your emissions with a whole country and say it’s small in comparison misses the whole point. We all need to cut emissions. Saying my neighbour pollutes so I can is just wrong. Flying is the single biggest cause of individual emissions irrespective of nationality. You either give a shit about the planet or you don’t.

You're vastly overestimating how much CO2e is generated by flying. Economy in the back of a modern twin-engine is nowhere near 2t for a round trip transatlantic flight. The ICAO has a fantastic CO2e [calculator](https://www.icao.int/environmental-protection/CarbonOffset/Pages/default.aspx) that incorporates aircraft type information and typical load factors for as accurate a figure as you can get. By all means don't fly if you don't want to, it's a totally legitimate choice, but let's get the figures right at least.

You realise that the ICAO is a UN organ right? There is literally no entity in the world more qualified to make an estimate of aviation emissions per head. .6t for moving someone across an ocean occasionally is pretty damn good, actually. This is also assuming that the aeroplane is a new airbus rather than a 747 which produces much more. Are you denying that you are not contributing to the problem? There are as many reasons to cross the Atlantic as there are people on either side of it. Family reunion, gap years, migration, studying abroad, commerce, conferences, tourism. The list goes on. The *vast* majority of transatlantic flights are on 777s, 767s, 787s, A380s, A350s, and A330s. Only one airline on either side of the pond - Lufthansa - still operates 747s (but the newest and most fuel-efficient model) after BA retired theirs in the pandemic. Everything else is a twin engine. In any case, the ICAO figure averages out across all aircraft types used to operate a given route; an A350 or 787 would be even more efficient. And who said I do nothing? When I fly, I always pick the most direct route with the highest load factor and most efficient aircraft, even if it costs me more. I don't own a car, take public transport and walk everywhere on holiday, don't have kids, don't invest in fossil fuels, don't eat red meat, and don't consume much in general. But travel brings the world closer together, and it's not something we should abandon frivolously. Normal people flying at most a few times a year is simply not the big problem you think it is. One last point: aviation has a natural incentive to keep improving efficiency. Airlines want lower fuel bills to remain competitive, and Airbus, Boeing, and the engine manufacturers are all quite genuine in trying to decarbonise, because it'll make them a bucket of money.

You know vegetarianism isn’t climate friendly right? Unless you grow 100% of your food yourself in a sustainable fashion. Most of our fruit and veg is imported from Holland and other exotic fruits have thousands of air miles on them. I burn 800-1000 litres of diesel per week delivering your veggies and tofu and that doesn’t include the rest of the trip by truck, refrigerated diesel operated trailer, ferry across the sea, warehousing etc.

I think a better question would be why completely discount the UK as a holiday destination just because it's the country you already live in? It's not like people are just going to the next town over, we have a diverse country with plenty of beautiful places to visit. It really doesn't. We had a week just south of Edinburgh this year, family of 4, in school holidays, £700 for the cottage and about £800 in petrol/food/outings. We were looking at self catering in Spain but it's currently looking at £2,500 for a basic one bed flat with either a sofa bed or bed in the kitchen for the adults and then it's car hire/food/outings etc no idea why people assume the UK is expensive

how long were you looking for? because even a shabby 2 bed air bnb in manchester will set you back £500 + for a weekend outside the holidays. I travel a lot both in and outside the UK, but what you get for your money in the UK is just not great often (you get lucky sometimes, but not often), and especially after covid, the requests from holiday home owners have gone a bit mad (expecting me to pay a substantial cleaning fee and also leave the house completely cleaned, unreasonably early aka pre 9 am). Combined with train costs (and unreliable service), it's easy to see how a european break can work out much cheaper,

This! I live within 15 minutes if Gatwick Airport which is also pretty close to Dover. In the same time it takes to fly/drive to Scotland/North of England or Devon and Cornwall you can be pretty far into France or have flown to somewhere on the Mediterranean. Its normally cheaper to holiday there, the food is better, and chances of nice weather are a lot higher. I have enjoyed my uk holidays during covid times but really missed going somewhere with good weather and great food.

Same here. In terms of total travel faffing involved, quite often going abroad is easier and cheaper than travelling within the UK. I live in London, so there's loads of airports near by, and the Eurostar is really good for a city break. All other things being equal, I really like the idea of experiencing somewhere different when going on a holiday e.g. different food, weather, architecture, language etc. While I have had some nice holidays in the UK, British destinations are missing out compared to foreign holidays on those things, and not necessarily cheaper or easier to make up for it.

I do plan on climbing Ben Nevis at some point next year though, but I will do that on a long weekend, rather than an actual holiday. I see a surprising amount of this. People will never leave their city and only go abroad for holidays - they usually seem to be the most vocal "the UK sucks for holidays" people. There was a popular reel on Instagram where a guy had a caption of "never going on a beach holiday in the UK again" while filming the grottiest beach near London. Some people seem to think that other countries don't have ugly places as well, and that you have to put in as much work to find the nice places as you do when you go abroad.

I think the ones who venture into the city (even if it's just the outskirts) sometimes approach people, but I wouldn't go out of my way to approach them in case there's a protective stag I've not seen. Out on the moors or on the grounds of Mt Edgcumbe they tend to stick together and avoid people, so I've not managed to get close to those ones.

People like what they like I guess? I don’t enjoy the UK in the slightest. It’s not my idea of a holiday. It’s the mental aspect of it, the escape. Getting on a flight and physically being away from here. I want to see and experience new cultures, foods, i love the sun and the heat, I like warm beaches and tropical water. I enjoy the feel of the electrifying buzz of big or bustling cities like Tokyo, Bangkok, Seoul etc. It just does not compare in the slightest. The vibe isn’t anything close to what I like.

No passport. Don't like flying. Hate airports. I'd rather strap myself in with the animals or luggage than fly in some airplanes set ups. I don't even sit next to people on the bus! I can't sit for long with my feet down because my hip is bad. I will blockade it before having someone sat next to me. Depends on the person or situation. I get angry if sat next to someone too long and they're too close or touching. Due to the shoulder, etc. If that's how I am on Bus'. You can bet money I'm not playing the insane passenger lottery on a tin can built by the lowest bidder that is in the air. Were I can't get off or block a seat. I'd rather go by boat. And also. I refuse to go on holiday with another person. If that happened you can guarantee that they are coming home separately. If at all. I know that going on holiday with someone will end up ugly. You will fall out and you're in a different place and sharing a room or near. And it's going to get grim. Don't fracking do it! I don't even like holidays that much to begin with. So yes. In the rare event I went on holiday. It's in the UK. On my own.

Me and my husband's hobbies and interests are based in the UK (we attend as well as participate in vintage steam/ truck and car rallies, as well as assorted preserved railways and museums.) So we integrate these rallies from around the UK into our spring/ sum/ autumn holidays. Also, we don't holiday for the weather - which imo most people do and go abroad 🤷‍♀️

I have a toddler so it’s easier to just put them in the car than navigate an airport. And when they’re tiny, it’s easier to just fill the car with their stuff rather than try to fit it in suitcases or cope without it abroad. We don’t like “all inclusive resort” holidays, so our holidays are usually city breaks. It’s easier to do those in the U.K. with small children rather than navigating foreign public transport, toilets/baby changing facilities, cultural norms around mealtimes, what the food might be etc The weather is also easier to cope with, not worrying about sunburn or struggling with heat/humidity.

Disagree, my 6+8 year old sons have been to 14+ countries and while it was a little bit of hassle flying long-haul with them between the ages of 3-5, they've had some amazing experiences in their short lives so far. There’s obviously factors to consider, such as the size of the group you’re travelling in, location, etc. but travel is pretty cheap if you don’t use the high street travel agents. For cheap package family holidays LoveHolidays is probably your best bet. Don’t forget to factor in the costs when on the actual holiday, the cost of food, drink and activities are cheaper when you’re in somewhere like Turkey. Alternatively, just go on Skyscanner and find cheap flights, then Booking.com or Airbnb for accommodation. The days of getting flights for pennies are over it seems, but before Covid I was frequently going to places like Venice and Faro for £5 each way and staying in hostels. You can still get flights on Skyscanner for the price of a KFC.

Yeah, I’ve done hostels home and abroad, but with young kids that isn’t really an option. I appreciate the OP’s comprehensive answer though! But I do get a sense that an element of spontaneity is required to get a cheap holiday abroad, taking advantage of last minute flights etc. Not much use when you have to plan annual leave and remove kids from school/go in the school holidays.

I was making 2 separate points. On LoveHolidays you can filter by 4-5* hotels, catering options, etc. and find luxurious beach holidays for pretty cheap. If you’re looking strictly at cost, hostels are a good option. I’ve stayed in European, whole room hostels for £25 that would make most British B&Bs look like slums. The idea that all hostels are smelly dorms with 15 student backpackers crammed in is often not true. These days they’re just budget hotels.

I'm aware that words change. It's just that this particular change is completely unnecessary because there is already a word - "holiday" - and if you want to be more specific about where you are going then you can be. On the other hand, the "correct" meaning of staycation expresses a concept that there isn't a simple word for. I'm not sure I follow your example of being excluded. If you live in a touristy area with lots of local attractions doesn't that just mean you live in an ideal place to have a staycation?

I think you are missing the point. The extra thing is that you are _taking time off work_ to have _whole days_ of relaxing, having fun whatever, while not travelling away from home. The fact that you might not appreciate doing that in your particular location doesn't alter what the word was originally intended to mean. It just means that you would rather go away somewhere, which is fine.

No, true. But look at the standard marketing for EVERY holiday advert, it's on the basis of 'go somewhere hot'. The general narrative from most people (that I see) is the same - "I want to escape this weather and go somewhere nicer [i.e. hotter]". I'm thinking now of family and colleagues who have gone on holiday, and they've all gone somewhere hotter. I can't think of anybody who went somewhere cold recently. The only exception being somebody took the kids to Lapland for Christmas a few years back.

I had a staycation a while ago. Had a spare week to use and wasn’t allowed to roll over and didn’t have money to go for a proper holiday. I’d only recently moved to London so had a London staycation, it was awesome! Did loads of touristy cultural stuff and just returned home every night to sleep in my own bed. Also went out of London for a nice hike, and planned and prepared a dinner party for friends on the Friday night. Great fun and felt like a really good use of my week.

No, there is more of a sense of doing days out and stuff while you are off. In fact, its origins are American - we don't call holidays "vacations" - and given Americans don't tend to go abroad anyway the only sensible interpretation is staying at home. It originally had the same meaning in the UK and that is definitely how I remember it being used. It is only in recent years that this new alternative meaning has caught on which obviously arises from the same attitude expressed by the OP that it's not a proper holiday unless you travel abroad. (This is obvious nonsense and I suspect is an attitude largely held by people who have never bothered to travel much in the UK.)

It rains just about everywhere (besides the most arid places on Earth) you've just been lucky... I've travelled a lot too and, whilst many places do have better weather than the UK most of the time, the same places can also have weather that is far worse than anything we're ever likely to experience here. I was caught up in a monsoon once, for example, and I cannot express just how shit that was. I also find it hard to relate to people (besides families with young children, people frightened of flying, etc) who will chose to spend just as much money experiencing the UK as I do experiencing new countrues, but I find it exasperating when people make out that our perpetually mild, yet safe, weather is a bad thing. I've never truly experienced terrible weather in the UK, only inconvenient weather.

Centre parcs is fun though I’ve been to the Niagara Falls and you just stand there looking at a big waterfalls in centre parcs you can do archery swimming bowling take your dog there’s no cars there’s lots of fun stuff for the kids to do there’s spa. Besides the uk is really beautiful and I’m an immigrant in nor originally from the uk but spending a long weekend in Scotland was one of the best holidays I have. I’ve also been to Cornwall with all my family including the dog you can just drive and stop whenever you want no stress from airports.

My daughter and I rented a lovely cottage in Dorset (one of the places in the UK we'd never been but wanted to visit). It cost only £699 for the week. As it was self-catering, I took the veg box I'd just had delivered (I'm veggie), and took a few other bits, so food was not going to cost a bomb. We had a few meals out. We drove down in a Smart car from Manchester. So travel wasn't terribly expensive. All in all, with membership for National Trust and English Heritage, we really didn't have to spend much. Probably about £500 each with accommodation. We had a lovely time. It all depends on what you want from a holiday. We're definitely not beach/pool types. We like to explore. That said we also travel abroad. So we mix it up. Next trip is Venice, then Easter it's London.

Just the simplicity of it. When I go on holiday I want to relax. I like that I'm familiar with the currency and culture and roads etc. Britain is stunning. I never get bored of exploring the UK. I went abroad this year to the the US, first time out of the country in years and did not relax once. No experience is worth the wait around at airports. They add too much stress at the beginning and end of a trip that the middle simply isn't worth it. Getting in a car or on a train and heading somewhere for a few days in the UK is just much more relaxing.

Yes you can travel as a foot passenger (or on a bike) on most ferries, though best to pick somewhere with good public transport connections on the other end if you're on foot. Lots of options though - i'd recommend Rotterdam/Hook of Holland from Hull or Harwich, or Santander from Portsmouth/Plymouth. The ferry over to Santander in Northern Spain is basically a mini cruise - takes 24 hours, but the ship is much bigger than your average ferry with loads to do on board

There is no warm sea though. I love hiking in UK. Even moved to live at the edge of Highlands to have them (and the forests) closer. Almost no weekend goes without a hike or kayaking. Have been everywhere from Plymouth to Thurso and some isles. Have a dip in lakes and rock pools in summer. But the warm see is lacking. Beaches are grand but the water is always uninviting.. We do have everything except the hot pools of Azores or amazing waters of Medditereanian.. I do get tired of the short days half a year in here. It is sad in Autumn and hardly bearable after Christmas. So we change for Morocco or such in February. I hate big holiday parks, would not spend a penny to stay there let alone couple grand (for a family). Love small remote cottages, farm stays or cosy camp sites.

Get thee to Wester Ross - incomparable UK scenery, beaches that defy the senses and best of all you can wander the hills and sometimes not see another human being for hours. Solitude for the soul. Not gonna lie, the journey from Hampshire is a tad lengthy (we have relatives a third of the way who we stay with) but it's worth it. The beaches around Lochinver are incredible and climbing Suilvan was epic. Easter I get to have a crack at BeNaBa in a recently acquired Tesla and I can't wait. Took it on with a Mini Cooper many moons ago and that was fun times. Giving it a crack with EV torque and RWD should be immense. Seeing how much of my battery i can rip through on the way up and how much i can put back in on the way down will be most enlightening. But yes that view from the top - I'm convinced there is no finer view on the planet; as fine possibly, but nothing better.

Aye Achmelvich beach is one of my favourites, just north of Lochinver. Stayed at Lochinver for a couple of weeks for work and had a great time. Loads of fishermen in and out, one particular evening we got absolutely ratarsed with a bunch of Filipinos who barely spoke a word of English, was a great night. Some of the beaches on the east and north coast are stunning as well, Dornoch and Dunnet Bay immediately spring to mind, with Dunnet Head being the most northerly point of the mainland UK. It's just that the rest of the scenery is a bit wank 😂 There's plenty of EV charging points up here btw, not too many in the way of fast chargers and you might get unlucky with one or two being out of service but a lot of the hotels are beginning to install 22kW ones. I got caught out once on a site visit to Mallaig. Planned to recharge the car at Fort William while having my lunch and the entire bank of chargers were out of service. Had to coast up to Fort Augustus and recharge there. If have probably made it to Inverness without that charge but I'd have been cutting it fine. The road from Applecross to Torridon is another fine wee single track road although be prepared for other tourists crawling at 20mph and not using the passing places to let you by 😅

Yeah I usually go up via Glencoe and back via Inverness. I'll be watching the status of the FW Superchargers very carefully as I trundle up the 74 and if they look wank I may flip that around and go up the 9 via Inverness. I'm keeping a regular eye on the reported status of the DCs at Torridon to get a feel for their reliability and I'm taking the granny with a heavy duty long extension just in case i need to borrow electrons from the cottage. Can't wait, I'm now over excited to be going back. BTW to anybody else reading this sub sub thread, this is all lies, Wester Ross is horrible, worst place on the planet, you really shouldn't waste your time visiting - The Lakes is nicer, go there instead..........

To be honest, I still think of it that way and think you've taken it to an extreme, as perhaps they did too? If you're right though, then I'm sure you can read back on your own comments and see that looking down on others and calling people with differing views "little englanders" is equally silly. Your comment history suggests you moved to Barcelona to be with your girlfriend. You seem to have become disillusioned with the UK while finding it difficult to see why the locals in your new location are disillusioned too. At the same time you look down upon people in your old home because they don't have the same disillusionment as you. I had a girlfriend in the Netherlands and spent a lot of time there. Things are new and exciting at first as you dive into the culture and new surroundings and like you, I started making comparisons to home. After a while you begin to see the cracks though. Nowhere is perfect and it's definitely what you make of it. All the best with your new home though, it is beautiful in Barcelona.

I agree with what you’re saying in regards to my own disillusion and discontent back at home with the UK, which others may feel in their own nations which is a perfectly valid observation. If I were to rephrase or clarify where I’m coming from with my “Little Englander” comment, I’d put it like this- there’s literally a whole world of unique and interesting things to do and see out there. For me personally, I’ve been lucky enough to see a lot of the world and I appreciate even the smallest of things when travelling in different countries. From experiencing foreign festivals/celebrations, meeting people who you’d never typically get to meet, learning new words, the smells and sights of new streets, even stupid things like going to a local store in a place with no tourists and making funny small talk with the worker who’s trying to figure out why you’re even there. That first moment when you step out of the airport into a new nation, seeing that everything looks and sounds different is simply irreplaceable. It’s just something that won’t ever be fulfilled for me staying in the same country. It just isn’t. I just find it really hard to empathise (unless it’s for financial or say mobility reasons) any possible motive as to why someone wouldn’t want to do those things and see what the world has to offer. It just comes across to me as a complete lack of interest in the rest of the world outside of this tiny island.

Definitely. We wouldn't have gotten the dog if we weren't happy to change our life to accommodate him. We knew we really wanted a dog and the desire to have a dog outweighed the concerns about being able to do big holidays. But we also knew we wanted children in the next couple of years and so our life would be changing anyway. So getting the dog was in some ways a way to ease into that transition.

100% this. As an immigrant who moved straight to London, I spent the first few years here going on holiday abroad. Then I met my husband, and we got a dog, and we began doing road trips within the UK. Honestly, it's so much better. No hassle with the airports and delayed flights. There is no pressure to do stuff because "I came all this way on a long flight, and I don't know when I'll be back," and so on. Plus, coming from a bigger country, it's amazing to me that we can be on the other side of England in a few hours by car. Places are so accessible. And there are some gorgeous places out there, vast majority of them very dog friendly.

Don't need to change currency. You know which way to look when crossing the roads. You're only a couple of hours from home if you there's an emergency you have you get back for. You know if you're going to ripped off when shopping/eating out. No queueing at airports/ferry/train stations and being concerned about not getting back home if there's an international situation. Yeah, hiring an out of the way larger house/cottage with space for the kids to run wild for a week in the UK is vastly cheaper than flights/hotels once you get beyond 2 kids. But, the biggest part is the ease, I frankly hate going on holiday as i find it very stressful with the kids underfoot whilst packing etc (same for coming back too) but the stress of my kids attempting to go 4 different directions at the same time at an airport or a busy holiday destination would probably finish me off

This is me - I can’t cope with the idea of it. I looked at things abroad, but some of the flight times for certain destinations are terrible (eg landing at 11.30pm then 2 hour travel to actual accommodation). Plus parents on holiday are primarily parents - it isn’t a very relaxing time as the kids still need feeding regularly, constant supervision and entertainment. So many places in the UK are lovely and there is loads to do!!

Just got back from a week away yesterday, we found a lovely decent sized cottage in the north Yorkshire dales (only about an hour from home to be honest) - this meant travel time for the kids was minimised, plus had the advantage of if we had forgotten anything or anything really important happened one of us could easily do a return round trip in a few hours. Plenty of stuff within an hour's drive from there too, got to Windermere one day. But mostly we stuck within about 20 minutes of the cottage and went walking

Environmental reasons, supporting local economies, discovering parts of my own country I’d never heard of, seeing the beauty in my own doorstep rather than spending thousands to go to a place on the other side of the globe. I’ve been to Australia, Japan, the US, all over Europe In my life (very lucky to have family & online friends all over the world to stay with!) and some of my favourite destinations have still been within the UK. Sure, centre parks, I really don’t get (upper middle class butlins), but go explore the UK. Had a lovely holiday in mid Wales recently, spent less than £500 all in for two people for five whilst also staying at a very lovely airbnb. Hiked, swam, explored, ate some great food, an hour away from where I live. It baffles me why somebody wouldn’t want to explore what’s on their own doorstep more. And me looking at your point, I really don’t get the fascination with seeing things like Niagara falls, wow, it’s visually stunning but I’ve seen millions of pictures of it and it’s packed with tourists gawking at it through their phones. It’s, not boring, but not at the top of my list to see. Whatever floats your boat though, everybody is different.

The mindset of it's the same cost as a holiday abroad bothers me. Yeah the booking is but when you factor in passports for multiple people, new clothes, spending money, transfers, money in the airport and every other extra expense that comes with flying abroad staying in the uk can be cheaper. Not everyone has a passport or "proper" holiday clothes or cases etc. especially when councils and LA punish parents for taking kids out of school during term time. I have simply no desire to go anywhere in the UK. I'm an hour from Cornwall and haven't been there for years. Overcrowded, overpriced, poor service and food, and scenery that while pretty, isn't that special. Add to that the obnoxious, loud people and litter everywhere and I max out after a day or two. Yeah there are some nice spots that are still well kept, I like Malvern and Lynmouth, but that's about it. For general laid back cafe culture you cannot beat small town Netherlands, ignore Amsterdam, head somewhere like Zutphen or Leeuwarden. For scenery, France has everything the UK enjoys on a grander scale, without most of the irritation.

I do city hops. We holiday all over Europe. Sometimes we stay in the country and sometimes we happily fly. Depends what we wanna see/do and how far we want to travel, it’s good to just stick around and enjoy the uk! Easier to get to places, can take my car (except London! There are still places I've never been. I can take my own car, no currency exchange rip off, no airport baggage and security checks, no sitting in a airplane for 3 hours with drunks and screaming kids. I like travel, sort of, and I don't have a thing about foreigners - in fact I've cheerfully studied three languages just out of interest - but the UK just has so much to offer.

Probably gonna get some hate for this, but it's not like UK has amazing beaches in the first place (except those in Cornwall maybe, which are still a dream destination for me so far). Don't get me wrong, they're nice beaches some of them, but nothing to write about. And just because it isn't sunny, that doesn't mean it's not dry weather, and we get a lot of that. Or at the very least, cloudy without rain. So plenty of time to just go sightseeing and exploring, trekking or just relaxing in front of a nice view.

What now? I hadn't realised there was a red kite feeding centre that close to Aberystwyth. We drove out to Gigrin Farm near Rhayader for our mind blowing red kite feeding experience. Might give your place a try, though it sounds a little more difficult to access (at Gigrin Farm we were allowed to drive right up to the hide, as I'm a blue badge holder). We did Devil's Bridge too (just the short easy route, and with much puffing and stopping), and love Aberystwyth. In four weeks time we're staying in Abergele. Can't wait.

Bwlch Nant is a national trust site. You only have to pay for parking, and the viewing point is a short walk from the car park. Well worth it. They have a cracking cafe as well.

The Gigrin Farm site has good cake in their cafe. Think it cost us £8 for a disabled person and carer, so a bit more expensive than the £5 maximum parking fee at Bwlch Nant. One person's short walk is another person's epic trek though. Looks like perhaps a 650m journey (each way) on foot. I'd have to allow half an hour for that on an average day - disabilities suck sometimes. I'm not saying it doesn't sound worth the pain/effort.

Lots of reasons, and cheap isn't one of them. Have you seen how much holiday cottages cost in Devon/Cornwall for a week? 1. Dogs can come. 2. You can find beautiful places within 2 hours of where you live, for the most part. 3. Usually, you don't have to deal with airport hassle and the dreaded flight-delay situation. 4. I've been fortunate to have been abroad to many places and it is great to discover new places, cultures and food etc but I also like the ease that comes with UK holidaying and home comforts. I'm not saying don't go abroad, but if you're looking to just relax or do anything outdoor focused, the UK has a lot to offer. If you want adventure and a new perspective on a part of the world, go abroad. 5. Currency exchange, you won't get ripped off by extortionate FX rates. 6. See friends in different parts of the country.

We love centerparcs and butlins and do mon-fri at each one every year. My husband and I both hate travelling and the thought of driving to the airport, flying, getting a car in whatever country we are in etc just sounds awful. We also don't really like hot weather so we are quite happy with the UK climate. We also have animals at home so 5 days away is long enough for us!

I love a holiday abroad if I’m sun seeking, but there’s some beautiful places in the UK too. Currently in north Wales. Conwy has a fab castle. Betws y Coed some stunning waterfalls. It’s pretty and naturey, i like it. Plus i can’t go abroad at the moment for health reasons; have cancer, on chemotherapy and I need to go to hospital with IMMEDIATELY should I show any signs of having sepsis which is a genuine risk in cheno patients apparently. I can’t take the risk of bot being able to get to an NHS hospital (because it’s a known health issue and a real risk, travel insurance that will cover me is all but impossible to get at the moment, I’ll probably take the risk of going without any in due course but not while I’m on chemotherapy and the risk is active).

While my husband was having cancer treatment the only holidays we had were staying with my parents in a different part of the country. Totally stress free which is exactly what you need when cancer is taking up all your energy. We didn't have to make ourselves so much as a cup of tea either which was lovely. Hope your chemo is going ok.

`why would you holiday within the UK?` I do both staycations and well as holidays abroad (mainly Europe). Why would I holiday within the UK? Sometimes due to time (eg a long weekend, taking into consideration travel time). Sometimes due to not wanting to do anything (every year I go to the same place in the UK, and I don't have to do anything because everything is practically 5 min walking distance away) apart from relaxing. And sometime it's because I haven't been to that area before and want to explore, after all there are some beautiful places in the UK as well :)

It’s not an either or though? Sometimes we go abroad and sometimes we stay in the UK. I don’t think our UK holidays have cost as much as the EU ones though! And it’s a lot less hassle with kids to stay in the UK When the kids were young they just wanted sand so a caravan park on the Yorkshire coast did the job and was less stressful than flying with them. We’ve never done peak season Centre Parcs or Haven as that is overpriced. But we’ve found nice self catering near the coast all over the UK for reasonable prices and we accept the weather might be patchy, but actually until this year we’ve had decent weather each time. There is stunning coast line in the country, we are so lucky. I love it even in bad weather as it just looks more dramatic.

I wouldn't waste the money on centre parks, that screams "I have no imagination" and is catering to the same people who would go for package holidays on the med etc where everything is laid on in the hotel and there are set activities etc. People on holidays like that aren't really experiencing the foreign country at all imo, they just seem to be there because it's sunny. Loads of really lovely interesting places to visit in the uk and stunning scenery. Why bother with passports and plane flights if you don't have to? Plus no language barrier. I also wouldn't call going on holiday in the uk a "staycation". A staycation is when you literally *stay at home* and enjoy it rather than going away.

I’ve traveled globally, whether it’s backpacking or luxury travel. Originally from Asia and have lived in Singapore, US, and now UK. Traveling within the UK is great because I haven’t lived here for long and it’s always good to explore where I live. And traveling within the UK gives a more relaxed staycation vibe, than taking a flight to go somewhere. Just the thought of an airport already makes me tired vs taking a relaxed drive to the countryside.

Visa issues. As an immigrant with work visa for UK, I can only holiday in UK,unless I plan months in advance, apply for visa, take a day off to get visa stamped, and still have a chance that it will be rejected. Better go to a lovely place in UK itself. Holidays are after all too unwind

We stayed in the lake district when the planes losing luggage and flight cancellations were chaos. For us I didn't want to book a holiday that it had taken ages to save up for, only to he messed around and stressed out. Also dealing with burnout and completely exhausted, I wanted a relaxing holiday. If I go abroad to another city, I want to go out, experience life, see as much as I can in that short window of time, and come home with a SD card full of images (photographer) which means finding the highest vantage points to take citiscapes, its not like I can frequently go back so you cram so much in. It was great just waking up each day, having breakfast by the lake then just walking different routes without the added pressure to fit as much in. If I ever get to the point I can afford two vacations a year, we will proll do one abroad as I love visiting easeterm Europe and one in the UK where we can just stop, relax and just go walking for a week in beautiful surroundings.

The real question is did you have a comparable holiday to niagra falls, eg same time of year, same duration etc? Just doing a random search, if I want to go to Center Parcs for 7 nights in August with my wife and 2 kids it costs me £400 less than the cheapest Booking.com booking to niagra falls plus the flight However I have to factor in: - travel. For Center Parcs this is a 1 hour drive, plus maybe half an hour queue. For niagra falls that’s two 10 hour flights including changeover, plus 2 hours in the airport and an hour getting to the airport - food. We just load up our car with food and will maybe go out for dinner once or twice over the week. Going abroad that’s possible if you’re staying at an Airbnb, not so much a hotel There’s a real benefit when you have a young family to just doing what’s convenient and close, particularly when it’s a comparative price

i’ve been to both niagara falls and center parcs. i stayed for 5 days in sherwood center parcs for less than £500 for two people. i didn’t stay in niagara but the flights alone to canada were about £700 each. center parcs can be cheap if you go at the right times and don’t get the lodge with a sauna

With our kids, we had got in habit of short break in uk around easter, then abroad in summer. After a week in wales this year we had thought to book a trip to Rhodes. We decided on lake district instead for a number of reasons, and likely to continue this trend: - it is honestly one of the most beautiful places I have been in the world (I am Australian and quite well traveled) - no risk of school holiday airport chaos, border control etc - holiday cottages, although self catering, are actually very chilled. You can chill out after the kids go to bed. - lots of activities and sights beyond sitting on beach (I know other types of European holiday are possible, but let's be honest beach resorts are generally what people are talking about when they go abroad with kids) - no having to worry about sunscreen, or excessive heat - yes British weather can be unreliable, but I'm yet to see it ruin a holiday. - the fact that Rhodes turned out to be on fire around the time we were planning to go left us in no doubt we made the right decision.

Just back from Center Parcs due to 90 mins drive and have very family friendly facilities (changing available both male and female toilets, baby food prep station, etc). Yeah, a BIG win for Center Parcs is that it’s easy. The kids are knackered at the end of the day from swimming/cycling and it’s a holiday where you naturally exercise and enjoy the outside, even if it is sanitised. I’m naturally an outdoorsy person, but my family aren’t so it’s a good compromise

Center Parcs is actually really good for families with small kids. Everything is close, the pool is free (when they’re really small there’s not a lot they actually can do apart from float in the pool), it’s pretty quiet and relaxing, kids can ride their bikes a lot safe in the knowledge that there’s no cars. Overall everything is close and easy.

There are plenty of activities for babies - music class, sensory class, messy play etc. Also the swimming pools and play areas (indoor soft play and outdoor) Also it's a nice place to just walk/ride around knowing you can just go back to your lodge if baby gets fussy. You don't tend to get disturbed by other people and most have children of their own so are sympathetic to babies. I could argue there's more to do at Centre Parcs than there is at a hotel abroad

From my experience, it's just a great place to relax knowing that everything you need is on site. Babies can be quite restrictive, but at CP you can just take it easy, do some nice walks around etc. Plus they have baby sensory classes and the like you can book into, if you're so inclined.

This country’s beautiful, people forget that. As OP said, it isn’t cheap, but I love walking/climbing in N. Wales, the Lakes, the Peaks; the wild beaches of N. Cornwall, Devon and N. East; the countryside + foodie hotspots of Yorkshire and S. Lakes; the wildness of the Highlands; and the architecture of Bath, Edinburgh or a good stately home; and a good city break in London, Leeds or Glasgow. All of these are available elsewhere, but not in many other countries and not so close together (though I guess Italy is an obvious exception). It’s also logistically easier with young kids, dogs and/or large groups, which is how I tend to go away now.

1. Because you can take pets. 2. Because you can get on holiday much quicker without wasting hours/days travelling. This allows you to have mini breaks 3. Because the UK is pretty gorgeous. I am sure there is just as much beauty in Scotland/Cornwall/The Lakes as you saw at Niagra falls. And history…. 4. Because you don’t have to worry about changing money. 5. Because you can assess crime risk a lot better in your own country. 6. Because airports and airport parking sucks. 7. Because you can take your own vehicle and don’t have to worry about renting and driving in a foreign country. 8. Because you can get home for emergencies much easier if you have elderly relatives or disabled children. 9. Because you don’t need a passport. 10. Because you can access the NHS without having to worry about quality of care or cost. 11. Because you don’t need travel insurance. I could honestly go on and on. You like foreign holidays, I get it. Me too. I love to travel. But travelling within the UK gives you far more options than limiting yourself to just foreign holidays. Seriously go and have a look at the Majesty of the Scottish Highlands just once. You might find you what to go again…

I tend to do shorter breaks in the UK and any other holidays abroad. UK has some great places, I find it a strange idea to want to live somewhere and never venture out of your own little bubble. London is extremely different to the peak district, Cornwall is very different to the Norfolk broads or Stratford Upon Avon, Manchester is very different from the Highlands. Considering its such a tiny country we have so many places of interest, scenes, cultural spots, mountains, caves, rivers, hills, cliffs, forests.

My old family doctor 40 years ago used to say to my mum "I don't know how you can afford to holiday in England." It was cheaper to holiday abroad back then too. I think my parents didn't relish the idea of getting on a plane with two young children, one of which had behavioral issues (my brother was tormentative and acted up a lot. I would react to him) and my dad probably had no love for being trapped in a hotel room abroad with my mum, who would get moody and depressed after any level of positive excitement. I know I stopped going on holiday with my family as soon as my aunt offered to look after me whenever my family went away. For some people the cost of holidaying in the UK is off-set by the benefit of being able to escape the family, as in my mum and dad's case. For others, they will prefer familiarity or they lack the self confidence to holiday abroad.

England is beautiful. Plus there's no baggage limit except for what you can physically fit in the car, no language to learn,the food is familiar for children which makes things easier, there's no panic about getting to the airport/ferry on time, no risk of flights being cancelled, if things go wrong you can easily get home. I love holidaying in the UK with the children it's so much easier and less stressful than going abroad, we went to Corfu last year and the travelling was so stressful

There are countless reasons why you would holiday here. We have incredibly beautiful locations in the UK to visit with rich history, you won’t be getting jet lagged and for most people it’s much more affordable therefore doable. Centre parks is extortionate but a trip to the costwolds or Lake District for example isn’t going to break the bank while giving you a nice break and change of scenery.

We have started doing our shorter breaks in the UK rather than flying off for city breaks firstly to reduce environmental impact but mostly because we want to try and have a better connection with the UK. It can depend on what you like doing on holiday. My family enjoys bodyboarding and sea swimming, plus days out to historical sites or child friendly theme parks so it’s easier to do that in the UK (especially when bringing own stuff like wet suits etc). However, this is dependent on weather. It was such awful weather this summer that we gave up any idea of being able to have a decent holiday in the UK and opted for guaranteed sunshine aboard with a cheap last minute deal.

Sometimes I just prefer not to fly as I don’t love flying tbh (although have taken trains to and in Europe, but talking about further afield), to not have the hassle of switching languages (I speak four including English which together get me quite far in Europe but if you’re not used to constantly switching it’s tiring plus I end up being the interpreter for my other half), and to relax a bit because you know how things work. Plus there are some awesome places in the UK, we often holidayed in England when I was growing up and it gave me an appreciation for the place. And my other half is from overseas so is always keen to see more of the UK. The main downside is it’s so expensive and hotels are often a bit crap even when they’re quite pricey.

There re lots of beautiful places within the UK, and a lot of the time (depending of course on where you live and where you go) you can get to a holiday destination more quickly and with less stress than travelling abroad. I enjoy going abroad and visiting different countries, but the last few holidays I have had have been in the UK - last summer I spent a week in Shropshire - it was pretty last minute, managed to find an Airbnb which was cheap, and it was only 3 hours drive from home (my nearest airport is over an hour away so . Had a nice relaxed drive voiding motorways, and at the end, no stressful airport queues, no adapting to a change in time zone, it was really relaxing and I got to explore an area I didn't know., This summer I went to Skye - been on my bucket list for years. As I didn't want to do a drive that long I got the sleeper train (which was an interesting experience in it's own right) and had a fantastic break. In a couple of weeks I have some time off and am planning to go down to Cornwall - again, haven't been since I was a child, it's off season so affordable, and I can avoid all the crowds and delays at airports etc. Hopefully places won't be quite so crowded as in the summer. I am thinking about other options next year - I'd like to go to Sicily and have always awaited to visit Iceland, so those are on the list, for example. But equally, so are parts of Ireland and Scotland and Northern England - it was a toss up between Cornwall and York for my upcoming tip, for example. I don't do well in heat, and I'm extremely sun-sensitive so the lack of sun here isn't a major factor for me. Of course the days are getting shorter but if I've been out doing stuff all day then a a quiet evening in relaxing with a good book suits me just fine

My in laws used to be big travel people, but haven't left the UK since 2019. At first it wear fear of covid on planes etc, but not anymore. They have got a dog since 2020, and take him its them wherever they go. It's much easier to do that in the UK than abroad. Travel time is significantly less - they might drive 3 hours, but international travel generally takes a whole day. You're lucky to be on a plane on the runway 3 hours after leaving your house. It also depends what you want to do. My in laws want to stay in a beautiful house surrounded by countryside, spending lots of time cooking and going for walks. The countryside in the UK is absolutely gorgeous.

Logistically simpler when travelling with a young family especially if you have very small kids. You wouldn't believe the amount of stuff you need to carry when you have a child less than 1 year old. Just chuck it all in the car including all the "just in case" stuff because why not? Generally easier to organise with big groups (2 or more families). You're on familiar ground so it's quite easy to plan and react flexibly when situations change. We always self-cater when we holiday in the UK so we can keep costs down but also can have a bit more variety in our food rather than just eating out all the time.

Agreed. I work in tourism in Scotland and travel for work regularly. The hostel I booked in Iceland in peak season was cheaper than hostels in certain areas of the highlands. I’ve seen hotels go for incredible prices in Edinburgh during the fringe. Historically, Scotland has been a rich man’s tourist location since the Victorian period. It’s a shame, because there are some absolutely stunning places that I wish were more accessible to average people.

I've had the same experience with Spain, Andorra, Italy, on par with Switzerland, and way more expensive than some parts of France depending on season and type of holiday. Croatia and the west balkans as a whole is also a great option. This year I've seen countless UK reg plates when driving mine through Germany, Austria, Slovenia etc, fewer in France and almost none elsewhere. People prefer going for a drive on the continent for better deals.

As an adult I always refused to holiday in the UK (aside from the occasional weekend away in somewhere like York, usually to attend an event). But since Covid, which also coincided with having a kid, we’ve been on three UK holidays and they’ve been great. The Northumberland coast in sunny weather is the most beautiful part of England hands down. Now my daughter is nearly three we’re starting to go abroad again, took her to Switzerland in June and going to Munich Xmas markets in December but next year we’ll be doing a week in Scotland as well as a beach holiday abroad.

I do love travelling overseas and see people who refuse to do it as wilfully ignorant. BUT for such a small country we have so much to see and experience. Beaches and surfing that is the best in the world, moors and mountains, then cute hills and chocolate box thatched cottages. Outdoor pursuits and works class theatres are only an hour away from each other . Museums in the U.K. are amazing, interactive, accessible to all ages and very cheap. We have Roman ruins, a space museum and nearly everything in between. Our cities are so vibrant, with amazing architecture (Middle Ages churches next to Georgian style town hall next to a 1960’s car park).

I would counter the "for financial reasons". ALlow me to testify! We usually staycation because we have a large family and with young kids we just dont want to do that to a plane full of people (you're welcome). So we look at Center Parcs (not a chance now) and Havens and such. Haven is actually quite a great value for money, but we are also usually a little cramped in the caravans (our fault mosdt families wont be). So this year on some friends advice we looked to our side of the EU. We ended up going with Netherlands, and stayed 8 days at a Euro Parcs resort just south of Rotterdam. We drove the 1.5 hours to Harwich port, took the 500 pound round trip ferry (8 hours) to Hook of Holland, with a cabin. The ferry is great, kids can run around, there is a cinema (extra money but worth it) food, shopping, above deck fresh air yadda yadda. AFter 8 hours we get into HoH/Rotterdam and drive 1.5 hours to our Euro Parcs. Where we booked a 4 bed, 3 bath CHALET for 1500 EU. The site is about 1/10th the size of Center Parcs but with pools, water slides, restaraunts, kids club, nature hikes, cycling, mini golf, AND is right next door to Eftiling theme park which is AMAZING. The food and drink is great value for money (150 EU for our family of 7 at the STEAKHOUSE!) and even at all the tourist attractions the Dutch do not fleece you. 30EU for lunch at the theme park. And the Dutch are AMAZING HOSTS. I had been to Holland in my military days and I forgot how AWESOME the Dutch are. So yea, maybe not as "Sexy" a vaca as say Ibiza or such, but the total cost of the holiday was easily HALF of a UK stay. 10/10 will go back!

I live in Pembrokeshire and I am amazed at the extortionate price of holiday accommodation. It's a lovely place and I am so glad I live here (moved 20 years ago from the West Midlands), but I think they really take the piss with the prices. I was in Solva/St Davids over the weekend and the food/drink prices were ridiculous. I feel in some cases, visitors are taken advantage of. You're absolutely right, it's easily the same cost as a trip abroad.

I'm biased of course, but I've travelled to a lot of exotic and far flung places (and not so far flung) yet I genuinely believe that the UK is one of the greatest, most beautiful places on earth. I choose to holiday here because the diverse seasons mean I can visit the same place at different times of the year and it yields new interest. I can travel to a dozen separate places within 6 hours of each other and experience pretty radical changes in environment and climate ergo flora and fauna. Mountains, grasslands, river deltas, moors, heaths, beaches, forests..you name it we've pretty much got it! I can read up the fascinating and well documented history of literally thousands of locations and choose to visit them on a whim, and most will not be inundated with crowds. The weather is predictably unpredictable. I pretty much detest the heat 99% of the time and feel far more invigorated standing on a hillside with a fresh, cool westerly blowing. And during all of this I'm only a days drive from home, I don't need to exchange money, I don't need to insure myself and more than usual, and I can bring the dog! The UK is an amazing place.

I've enjoyed my travels immensely, but I have reached the homebody stage of my life, so my travels tend to be closer to home and for shorter periods of time. Finally, I'm an immigrant. I am not originally from UK, so I love exploring. My partner, who is actually British is very good at making fun and educational routes. And we usually drive which is fun. But, did you say financial reasons? 😂 Our last holidays in UK were more expensive than foreign holidays. It is more of the luxury to go on holiday in UK then ho abroad, unless you are driving somewhere for a day trip. Hotels are very expensive, especially if you have got a child, like we do and don’t want to stay in very dodgy places or hostels.

I like this country. I like the moody mistiness highlands and the stormwracked islands of scotland, the rugged lakes and moors of the northern England national parks, the cornish coast, the hills and valleys of wales with their forests and reservoirs. The canals to cycle along. I like to go on hill running and bikepacking trips here. I like to pass through the landscape with neolithic monuments, the small stone circles, the barrows, the hillforts and standing stones. There is a continuity of history on these islands that means you are constantly surrounded by markers that show the history all around you. I also go abroad, but its more organisation, its more expensive for the type of holiday I do where the travel to and from the holiday is the most expensive part, and its less of an investment if the weather sucks, I can chuck my gear in a car and change plans on a whim. My partner really hates that kind of thing, so I tend to do it in this country where I can just go myself without too much hassle, and we go abroad together where I grit my teeth and try to spend as little time as possible lounging round whatever awful resort he likes :)

I'm largely free to enjoy the holiday on my own terms, I can jump in the car and drive when I feel ready - I don't have the stresses of airport queues or have a flight time to catch at silly o'clock in the morning. I have the car, so I'm not bound by baggage restrictions or have to cart around a trolley of heavy cases. I can take the dog. Familiarity. I don't have to learn a new language or understand a new culture to walk around new towns. This isn't a right-wing jibe, its just easier sometimes. Granted, this is becoming less of an issue in today's more cash-less society but, I don't have to go through the rigmarole of changing money & inevitably either be left scrambling round to spend the last of my currency in the airport duty-free (buying crap I don't need nor particularly want) or bring currency home with me which I'll tell myself I'll get changed back, but never will. Sometimes going on holiday isn't always about flying off to a beach.

Centre Parcs is great fun, especially for kids. When i was a kid i preferred my holidays there to most abroad holidays we had. Cornwall is also really nice, its essentially France without the French people. UK is incredibly expensive yes op hit it right, I too went on the first UK holiday as a last min break to centre parks Nottingham, room had a jacuzzi etc. It was amazing. But there was just 2 of us so it worked out a LOT of money! Eating out etc on top of that was a fortune. We were driving back from there and I said "did you enjoy it?"' She said yes but Paris would have prob been cheaper for you! We both laughed and yes I have worked a lot and been to Paris a lot I know I could have got 2 flights and a really nice hotel in Paris for the same price! We both had a good laugh and agreed we could, I asked would you have preferred Paris? I got a jab in the arm with a look of "are you stupid" Being honest not just Paris, and city in Europe within reason as long as flights were not unusually expensive because of some rugby game or something would have been less cost than centrparcs. I won't be doing anything more than an evening in a hotel in a city I want to or need to be in the future. I can only assume UK is a lot more affordable for the likes of Americans to a much lesser extent Europeans with the current exchange rate, everything is 30% or more, cheaper for Americans due to getting more £ to the dollar than a few years ago.

I’ve traveled a ridiculous amount over the years and seen many corners of the planet and continue to do so. Even lived in a few different countries. These days however, I’d rather just jump in the car or on a train and travel within the uk. There’s so many beautiful places to visit. It’s way more relaxing than dealing with all the angry people at airports these days. No burning of a couple of tonnes of aviation fuel into the atmosphere makes me happy. Sitting on a beach bores me. Lots of other reasons that all add up really.

a few reasons 1. no airport car parking or expensive train to airport 2. I can bring my own food/shop locally 3. I can just go easier than a week long holiday abroad 4. can take dog (when we had dog) 5. can use own car rather than pay for hire car 6. no faffing with currency exchange 7. we have national trust/English heritage membership (we rotate between them) so we have free entry and activities local to where we may stay 8. childcare issues means lining up holidays between us is difficult so we cannot always plan and book a year out  its invariability cheaper for us to stay in the uk and a hell of a lot less hassle. Especially with a youngish child. We are not the type to sun in Spain and not leave the resort so things do end up costing. It is more for us to go abroad when we factor in everything.  if price wasn’t an option yes we would go abroad more, however dragging a child around on a city style break, with lots of walking, and visiting things which are not as interesting to them, in a language they have some exposure to, (while we can) isn’t fun for them, and we need to consider that a holiday needs to Work for all of us as we don’t get one all the time

Well for starters we've got Scotland, North Wales, Lake District and the South West (Jurrassic Coast to Cornwall etc). We enjoy camping and prefer to take our dog with us. With our camping setup it's as good as any air bnb or holiday accommodation (in our oppionion), we've got our own power station, hot private shower (gas fired), gas fridge etc. All we need is a water supply + a loo and we're good to go. Means we can camp pretty much anywhere for very little cost.

Mainland Europe is far too hot in the summer and getting worse year by year. Anywhere beyond Europe you are using at least 2 days of your precious leave to get there and back. I am taking my toddler to see my parents who spend April in torremolinos, over Easter week. 6 nights is £1,100 so far just for the two of us, flight and accomodation (which is nothing special, bland room with ikea furniture). We’d have more stuff to do at Centerparcs, and travelling would be less of a ball ache.

Living in Yorkshire, I can drive to just about any point in GreatBritain in 10 hours door to door. I enjoy driving long distances. When you factor in travelling to an airport queueing, flying, and getting to the destination the other side it’s not much quicker. I don’t see the point of travelling thousands of miles to sit next to a pool and eat a buffet three times a day. There is so much to see and do. Less hassle

Because I want to go to some places in the UK. My husband and I have spoken about wanting to do a trip to Scotland for a while now but trying to work out what would be the best way to get there and what to do (we live in East Sussex). He's been a few times as a kid and had to go there for work purposes just before the pandemic which convinced him we should go someday. I would like to retrace some steps in North Wales because I have not been there since my grandparents passed away. My husband has never been to Wales but obviously the weather is one of the big factors of going there as we need to accept it may rain all the time we are there. We want to visit Chatsworth and Bletchley park at some point too. We just don't get to go to many places as we are so busy with work but they are all on our to do list.

One major reason is health problems, or potential health problems. for example Asthma. An asthma attack abroad can be a major problem (death if not hospitalised, getting an oxygen bottle to carry with you. etc.). No passport.

Not even just abroad. I remember when I was about 6 or 7 flying back from Disney World Florida to Manchester. My parents had packed my inhalers in my carry on bag. Started the descent down to Manchester and asthma attack came on. Air Hostesses wouldn't let my parents stand up to get my inhalers out of my carry on bag which they'd stowed in the overhead bins.

Cheap, easy & underrated. I live in the North West, so the lake district is 45 mins away and is amazing in summer. If you can hack the drive, the Highlands are like being in the Lord of the rings. Amazing scenery, hikes, great locals, not full of idiot tourists and plenty of great local pubs. We recently had our first baby and didn't want to fly. So this summer we visited the lakes and the Isle of skye. Gonna do the same next year!

Because GB is beautiful. Other places are too but within the time it takes to get to Greece (door to door) I could be in either the highlands or the broads. We have the best coastline in all of Europe. Beautiful green countryside and hills/ mountains and lakes that are stunning. Just need to ask those Europeans that come over in their masses. I’ve never been to to Centre Parcs. To stay in the same woods somewhere for a whole week seems a waste. I’d still go on holidays abroad for the culture and experiences. I travelled a lot in my 20’s and I have seen so much of the world and none of the UK, suddenly that seemed ridiculous to me when I had kids. I did grow up a bit snobby and have never been to a butlins/centreparcs (although absolutely nothing against them and will bring my kids when we get to those holidays) so can’t speak to those prices, BUT a lot of places are way more expensive than Europe - during the summer nice parts of the coast down south can be £2k+ for accommodation alone. I could go to a LOT of tropical countries including travel for that!

Because there really is as much to do in the UK as there is abroad - unless you want to vegitate on a sun lounger. The fact I can take my own car (without the sometimes criminal charges they apply abroad for hiring) and dog are big bonuses, so instead of being limited to one small area, we allow ourselves 1 hr drive any direction to see that part of the world. The ability to communicate perfectly also helps a great deal. When I go abroad I do try my best to use some of the local language, but I can't be expected to learn a new tongue just for a fortnight in Italy/Spain/Thailand.

We can hire a fantastic place in a beautiful secluded location for a quarter of the price of your Niagara falls trip. We don't do unnecessary air miles. We don't have to deal with airports. There's no delays or cancellations or being sat on the tarmac. We don't have to deal with the additional expenses of airport parking, car hire, baggage, etc. We can pack the car and just go. The UK is beautiful. I'm not saying we don't also travel abroad, but there's still so much here we'd love to see and visit (and re-visit!). There is an ease to it which makes a UK holiday differently relaxing.

I’ve been living abroad in a developing country for the last 2 and a half years and would really like a low effort holiday and to just stay in a nice cottage or something to enjoy the countryside within a couple hours max of where I live. 1) There are many pretty and picturesque parts of the country, with lots to do and see. Britain's history is pretty epic, varied and visible, when you go looking for it. 2) It's much easier to load the kids into a car than onto a plane. And in any case you avoid the hassle and stress of flying. 3) You don't have to worry about finding food etc in unfamiliar surroundings or languages when you arrive - just take it with you or find a supermarket. 4) Temperatures are generally more manageable and pleasant (I don't like heat very much) than many countries I'd visit (although against this you can rarely move without a raincoat, of course). 5) If you're prepared to do your own thing, it's a lot cheaper than paying for a family to go abroad. Don't get me wrong, I love going abroad and exploring new places, particularly around the Mediterranean, but staycations have their own huge benefits, particularly once you have kids.

Health issues that make travel insurance both necessary and expensive can mean that you can't travel outside the UK without taking risks or extra costs that aren't worth it for a holiday. But I am with you in general. Holidays abroad can work out quite a bit cheaper than holidays in the UK. Staycation means staying at home, in your own home, taking time off, and doing day trips or going to museums and so on, and being a tourist for the place your live in. It does actually matter because staycation has actual potential to be a useful term, and it's not "not leaving the country."

Id guess convenience. Travelling to the airport 2/3 hrs early, whole security malarky, airplanes themselves suck ass. But if you drive you can just go on a casual drive a few hours and soak up the seaside and if you're not too far from places like cornwall you can enjoy some decent weather and beaches in summer

I love U.K. holidays nowadays. They just feel more relaxed for self catering style. Chuck all my home comforts in the car and experience some beautiful landscapes and villages. The only downside is the weather being unpredictable, but I’ve been lucky my last few U.K. holidays have all been during heatwaves 😅

Being on holiday is a state of mind, not a location. There is SO much to see in the UK. I will never see all the beautiful mountains and lakes, visit all the quirky museums or explore everything all the cities offer. Holidaying in the UK is easy to organise, easy to do spontaneously, and language and currency are the same. A holiday is ultimately about doing something out of your ordinary that you really enjoy, if the UK offers that, then why not take it.

I love visiting and exploring different places both within the uk and aboard. We have a lot to offer. I'm not a sit in the resort sort of person. I've started camping again as I love the outdoors. It's relaxing. This year I've been to Kent, Edinburgh, Leeds and the Yorkshire Dale's . Last year we explored The New Forest and York. Next year, we're going to Cornwall and I'm also planning to take my gf up to the Yorkshire Dale's with me. There is a particularly beautiful waterfall that is known as a fairy glade and it's the perfect place to propose to her.

Remote parts of Scotland are spectacular and affordable(ish). Ideal for families. It all depends on what you want. Self-catering in a house you could never afford, in a quiet beautiful location beats Niagara Falls. (I've been, I thought it was tacky as f). Centre Parcs is just Butlins for ponces.

It's not the best place to spend a week but I did see a lot of interesting museums and features that i'd not seen before. There's a lot of places in the UK i want to see and experience and until I do I won't consider going abroad as the UK has a lot to see and do that i've not seen or done.

They really aren't, there's quite a lot of diversity in museums around the country, it's often the only way to discover local oddities. In Heysham there's a small museum and in it I found out that not only did they have a karting track built in the 1960s Nigel Mansell raced there and had a crash too. That's the sort of trivia you'd only get from his autobiography or a small, local museum. The castle's of the UK are quite different too, there are other local attractions that vary too.

because it's an absolute stunning country. Never been to Centre Parcs and travelled all over the world, but the UK can hold its own perfectly fine. The Norfolk coast, the Lakes, Pembrokeshire, Brecons, the Highlands, Yorkshire Dales the list is endless. Yes it can be pricey, but it certainly doesn't have to be. I have had UK holidays that cost a sizeable whack and I had some that hardly made a dent.

There are a lot of good reasons posted already, but one i haven't seen is that everyone in the uk speaks english (practically). Its nice to be able to just strike up a conversation with anyone you see. I only speak English and Spanish, so i tend to stick to English or spanish speaking countries, although i pretty much holiday in the uk exclusively since i dont fly for environmental reasons. I have traveled all over when i was younger, probably 60 countries plus, so i dont feel i need to see the world anymore. I like the uk and it has a lot to offer!

Easier to travel to places in the UK within the comfort of my own car. Even for a short flight, I have to factor in the time getting to the airport, arriving early, the faff of luggage sizes and restrictions, then travel on the other side, so a 2 hour flight is now basically 6 hours of traveling. Also I'm forever scoping out places in the UK where I might want to live one day.

I moved to the UK nearly 10 years ago and I'm still in love. I went to Italy for my honeymoon a little back and although it was also beautiful, I have to say my heart belongs to the UK. It's not to say I still don't want to visit other beautiful places on my bucket list (areas in Germany, Portugal, Japan, Chile), I just love visiting quaint British villages, seaside towns, the Highlands, the Peak District, Lake District, various National Trusts and English Heritage places, etc. I very much appreciate a luxurious afternoon tea, autumn walks, quiet pub drinks in the cozy winter.... It's what I live for and why I've chosen to settle here.

Cornwall is my favourite place in the world. I love the sea, the standing stones, the cliff top walks, Seagulls, St Ives, St Justs, the sculpture parks, Cot Valley, the various towns and beaches... I will never get tired of Cornwall. Chester is a fantastic place to visit, then you have Glasgow, York, Liverpool, Brighton, London, Devon, the Peak District, the Lake District, Flamborough, Cambridge, Oxford, Buxton, Birmingham, Manchester, and so many more places. I know some of them might seem a little out of place, but I still either loved going or can’t wait to go.

I feel that the nature is quite good. If you like to hike, there are many multi-day trails that offer a bit of everything (beautiful scenery, different landscapes, lot of accommodation). Also it is very safe and everyone speaks English so less stress, especially for people with medical conditions or kids

I absolutely hate flying. I hate airports, I hate the endless queues at security, having to effectively repack just because you forgot you had 3p in change in a side pocket of your bag, I hate rushing find your gate, the fact that there’s never enough seating, a chocolate bar will cost you £3.50 and a burger and chips is over £18. If you’ve got a pushchair, f- you because the lifts are only for wheelchair users. I hate take off, I hate being crammed into a small metal tube for 2 hours, I hate the ridiculously expensive drinks, the uncomfortable seats, the lack of legroom, the lack of space to walk about, the horrible tiny toilets. I hate landing, I hate passport check. Let me holiday in the UK any day.

Sadly I will disagree on the misery part. I love flying so much. The rush of taking off. The long hours of not being able to do any petty jobs or expecting to fix anything. I won’t be criticised for reading for 8-9 hours and even have food and drinks brought to me. I honestly love being in an airport, the hustle and bustle of people travelling. I had to renew my New Zealand work visa once and flew London to Auckland, slept in the airport and flew straight back. Loved every minute of it. So having flown countless times since 1976 I’m probably accountable for a large amount of aircraft emissions…. Sorry about that…. But I still love flying commercially. There’s probably an extra layer in hell for me.

I don't prefer the UK by any means, but I do think it's easy to discount how beautiful and amazing a lot of it is when it's pretty much on your doorstep. I've also been lucky enough to live in various good parts (Scotland, Cornwall, Cambridge, etc). It always stuck with me that a Polish guy I knew in Glasgow said he and his family just spent their holidays exploring Scotland because it's so incredible. I've done that when I've lived in other countries, yet often I've looked to leave the UK for holidays rather than explore it more. There's something more exciting about going abroad but it's easy to overlook what's here. Also I do find it funny how many English people say to me wistfully "oh I'd love to visit Scotland one day" as if it requires some epic journey with olde maps labelled HERE BE BEASTIES and you definitely couldn't just fucking drive there after work on a Friday

How many of you went to Niagara Falls? 2 people? Centre parcs you can get a family of 6 in a lodge, tons of stuff for kids to do, good for a multi generational family holiday. Can take dogs and bicycles etc. Self catering can do bbq’s so can workout quite good value per person. Depending on what time of year you go.

Because there's some amazing places to go, and some fantastic things to see. You don't have to go to some resort or fancy park, there's serious history on your doorstep and there are b&b's and hotels galore. Walk a moor, climb a hill, boat on a lake, see a Forrest, castle, or historic town, and even spend a day at the seaside.

Climate emergency considerations It's cheaper and generally less hidden costs everywhere It's more interesting vs an all inclusive package holiday (you can do a road trip and stay in multiple places etc etc vs dumped in a hotel with unlimited sangria) You can plan on your terms. Leave when you want etc etc. 12 nights? No problem! Also less risk of random strike action or ATC brain farts. If you're driving you can take a car load of stuff (bikes, canoes, boxes of wine etc etc) While the summer weather might be mixed, it's generally not uncomfortably hot either. We've mostly fine staycations for the past decade and haven't had a bad one yet. I guess we've been lucky.

I enjoy doing hiking trips, and so living up in Scotland like to make the most out of the right to roam laws. Plus with something like hiking I find it much more comforting knowing there’s no language barrier if I ever have to contact mountain rescue etc. Tend to go abroad more for city breaks though, as have visited most of the cities in the UK at some point or other.

We go for several short stays a year plus a couple of week long holidays - all UK. Centerparcs is super expensive if you go for one of the top chalets, but then your travel is negligible, and everything is there. The mid-range chalets are good value outside of peak. We've only stayed at one slightly iffy airbnb, and that was a hygiene issue rather than cameras in unexpected places! We've stayed in a couple of pubs that do B&B, and they've been fantastic. In fact, the worst place was a hotel in Kent that had a bath in the middle of the bedroom. The whole vibe was a bit "boom chicka wow wow," Dutch plumber style. We've seen parts of England and Wales that I've never seen before, and they've been amazing. On the other hand, I live in the West Midlands with my partner (most of the time), but I spent most of my first 30 years in Kent. Taking her down there a few times to see friends and family has made me reappraise certain parts of the South East, around the Darling Buds of May countryside, and parts of Sussex - areas I never really explored as an urchin.

My partner’s just had surgery as isn’t allowed to fly yet, plus she’s rubbish on a boat so we’ve had a UK break instead this back end. Plus, no matter how nearby Europe is there’s still the sheer faff of getting there. The whole process of getting in and out of an airport, on and off a plane, takes *hours*, and it’s soul destroying dead time. It’s not a case of preferring the UK over abroad for us, but there’s a lot to be said for exploring what we’ve got on our doorsteps.

I quite like the UK. A change is nice and all that, but : 1. Travel is a ball ache. Airlines are unreliable these days, and you spend two days doing stressful unpleasant expensive travel. 2. I like my friends, and like going away with biggish groups.. Much easier to organise in the UK. 3. The money I save on travel I can spend on food and drink in the UK and Iike that. Couple of years ago I spent a week in Inverness for NYE. One of my best holidays, did some great walks, pottered about, nice food, good beer and whisky, cosy place to stay etc. Would recommend. Snowdonia and Norfolk were all my childhood holidays. We didn't go abroad as kids in the 80s, couldn't afford it and my Mum wasn't interested. In adult life I've added the Highlands and Dorset to that, with a bit of surfing in Devon and the occasional UK city break. I'd say over half my holiday time is spent in the UK, and it used to be a lot more than that.

We do go on trips abroad but we also have a campervan. Chucking everything into the vehicle and just driving to your destination is much less hassle and stress than going to an airport, flying, trying not to get ripped off at your destination, trying to navigate dietary requirements abroad etc etc. Also UK has some amazing things to do and see. Basically for a low stress holiday staying on the island is the way to go and I totally understand why some people don’t want to travel abroad

Couple of reasons, one if I only have a long weekend I can drive to many places and stay fairly cheaply in the UK if I plan it right. Mainly though in the UK I know I can be back within a few hours if my Nana has a fall or becomes ill. Until last Christmas it was my grandad who was regularly in hospital or having falls, he’s passed now but me and my dad care for nana and we definitely can’t both be far away at the same time.

You don't need to go far to find impressive natural views, you don't need to jump on a plane to see ancient ruins. Then there are the cities, towns and villages and all they offer. I've also holidayed abroad, and honestly, I have as much of a good time in the UK than I do abroad. There is also the bonus of being able to take my dogs with me on UK holidays.

More efficient use of holiday, don't lose a day of holiday either side. Also, the UK is beautiful. (I do like an abroad holiday for sunshine though)

Same reason as I'd take a holiday anywhere else, there being a something in the locality that I want to see or an activity that I want to take part in.

I like to explore the UK. We don't go abroad. Maybe one day again. We have our favourite places for nostalgia and genuinely like just taking a car for a drive. Never considered it expensive or anything.
