No it is dependent on the tire. Some tires require 100max some 120max. I am seeing other comments say 130. You have to actually look at the tires. There is no blanket statement for tire pressure like there is for other metrics in trucks.

It’s based on “I was told this once by a guy and I’ve lived it ever since.” Hence- no facts. Cause if it was based on facts, you run higher pressures in the summer due to not wanting the sidewalls flexing so much. Heat builds up due to sidewall flex, so lower pressures leads to sidewall flex which leads to heat build up, which leads to blowouts.

Because 110 might be under inflated. Best practice is sidewall pressure on the steer, ideally 5-10 psi over, and on drives I’d run whatever you feel comfortable with as you only need 80 psi to carry 34000 on a dual tandem axle.

Manufacturer sets the limits. If it’s outside that limit it’s an OSHA violation because it’s unsafe. It means a lot. However, it’s likely that this is still within the limit. Still, OSHA would probably come inspect.

Yeah, you are likely correct, but if the OP checks, and the tire is outside of the tire manufacturers spec, it’s 100% an osha violation. If the company is getting a high rate if tire blow outs do to having higher pressure, even if the tire is within spec, it would still be an osha violation because it’s putting added risk in the driver. (This would be more difficult to prove)

Yea, just look at your tires. I haven’t seen all tires, but all the ones I’ve ran across all say 120 cold and aluminum wheels I’ve seen all say 130. Now as far as blow outs, how would those drivers know it’s due to high pressure vs sst running over something that caused a leak and that’s what caused the blow out? You can’t know that unless you run a tpms in your truck. I run tpms and high pressure. Zero blow outs in 2.5 years. I have had flats though from bolts piercing my tires, which I wouldn’t have known about until the tire was shredded and flying all over the road and a ruined wheel if it weren’t for my tpms

My drives have a max psi of 120 when cold. Blowouts happen often in the summer because drivers run their tires underinflated for the load they're carrying. Every tire has different load ratings and max psi. Even if you pulled the same kind of trailer with the tires at 100psi, that doesn't mean anything. Are the tires for your current company the same brand/model/size as your previous company? I highly doubt it. If the tires are rated for 120psi max when cold, then fill em up and run it.

I did not know that a blow out could happen in the summer months due to under inflation. Our company tires are rated for 100psi. In the wintertime at night, when the truck is not rolling, the psi drops to the high 80’s and my truck wakes me up every night to let me know about it .Do you think it’s ok to raise the psi in the tires up to 105-110?

Most truck tires have a max cold psi around 120. However, there is also a chart the manufacturers will put out with a minimum pressure for different weights. 100/110 isn't normally going to be considered under inflated, and is a pretty normal pressure to run the tires at. Going higher, up to the max rating, is also perfectly acceptable.

You’re company is not understanding that the issue isn’t that the tires don’t have 120 psi, it’s just that the drivers are not checking the tire psi regularly and so these tires are being run low and eventually fail. On another note, 120 PSI is probably too high for most low profile tires today with the exception of some steer tires that were designed to be able to handle up to 120 PSI (cold state). This information is printed on the sidewall of the tire. There is a Michelin load inflation tire chart online that will tell you what PSI your tires should have based on the weight you’ll be carrying.

I’ll tell you steers at the pressure are right on the verge of being under inflated especially if you are carrying gross weight. Think about what happens during braking- weight transfers up to the steers, which overloads you under inflated tire, which buckles the sidewall, which causes wear patterns to start. The sidewall pressure is the minimum pressure needed to carry that weight in a flat surface sitting still.

That’s the minimum cold air to weight rating that Michelin says. Their data is the same as Bridgestone or any other tire manufacturer. They all use the TMC(Tire Maintenance Council) guidelines. For a 275/80R22.5 and (295/75R22.5) tire that is a 14ply (G load range) cold air (68 degrees) Your max weight and carrying capabilities at 68MPH is 6175Lbs @ 110psi per tire or 12,350lbs for the steer axle. If you reduce that to 105Psi that tire is only capable of carrying 5980lbs (11960lbs on the steer axle) Also, for every 10 degrees difference in temperature is a 2psi expansion or contraction on these calculations. Example tires set at 110psi cold in 68 degrees. In the summer ambient (outside) temperatures climb to 98 degrees f so 116psi is the needed pressure at 98 degrees to hit the recommended cold pressure of 68 degrees The solution in tire performance, especially steer axles is almost always add more air.

Like I said before, if you look at the Michelin tire load inflation tables (link below), you will realize that the max weight of the tire is matched with the (max) PSI of the tire. There is no other way to read the table. It’s pretty self-explanatory. Also, you’re not understanding that the recommended PSI is completely different if you use a tire by itself (single) versus as a dual. This is right there again in the table. When Michelin is talking about “cold state,” they talking about when the tire has not been driven for at least 3 hrs (link below). I would add as well that the tire should be away from sunlight as direct sunlight can change the PSI of the tire. I agree as well that ambient temperature does change the tire PSI, so a tire will have a different PSI if the ambient temperature is -10 F versus an ambient temperature of 60 F. There’s nothing wrong with the tire, it’s just physics. This is why during winter, I try to air up my tire when the ambient temperature is more or less the average of winter in the area I drive in. Load and inflation tables below. I couldn’t find the tables for commercial trucks, but these tables will do. Just select the wheel diameter 22.5” and you’ll find your tire size. You can also Google the commercial tables, but I couldn’t find some that come directly from the Michelin site. If you wanna go faster than 65MPH you need to add more air and you still have to sacrifice your max load. If want to carry more weight, you need to reduce speed. But in this case I’m not. The only reason I understand this topic is because I have already had this same discussion on a different site years ago. About the only new thing you mentioned is the speed of 65 mph. From previous research I’ve done, semi truck tires are typically rated for around 70-75 mph. Some tires will display this on the sidewall. Others will have this information on their website’s technical data sheet.

Look dude I’m not trying to troll or piss you off. I have a very good understanding of these tables. I work for a tire manufacturer and specialize in truck tires. I write tire programs and running specifications for fleets based on their specific fleet needs, routes,loads and operating conditions. All I was trying to point out just like the other redditor is that tire manufacturers don’t list a max psi on commercial truck tires. They list a max weight carrying capacity and the minimum pressure to carry that load. I was trying to help you avoid a catastrophic failure on your steer tires by running under-inflated in the summer. You don’t need to freak out if your tires are @ 115psi cold on a G load tire. They aren’t going to blow off the rim. If you like I can post an IFTTT that you can use on your iPhone as a shortcut to determine inflation psi for current/local temperatures.

I think I understand what you’re saying, but I think we’re both looking at it from different point of views and our description isn’t accurate about the PSI. The right answer should be that the PSI given in the tables is the “appropriate” or “recommended” PSI without mentioning whether it’s a minimum or maximum PSI because either one isn’t accurate anyway. The recommended PSI is to prevent irregular tire wear due to both over-inflation and under-inflation. If one inflates the tires higher than the recommended PSI, then over-inflation tire wear can occur. Similarly, if one under-inflates, under-inflation tire wear can occur. I think also that the “recommended” PSI given is also probably a range and not an exact number. So anywhere around it (but not excessively), should be just fine in my point of view anyway.

What's a good inflater hose? I bought one at loves and the connector for the inflator part leaked a bit but it would never actually fill the tire up after around 10 minutes, I could hear the air coming out of the tip at times but it was useless so I just returned it.

I have the one that has a more flexible hose. The cheap one has a stiffer hose and also won’t handle very cold temperatures well. I think I got mine from TA/Petro, but Pilot/FJ and Love’s might carry the more expensive one. The trick to making your glad hand inflator work best is to set the cruise control on your truck and raise the RPMs to 900 or higher if possible. Each truck is different as to how to do this so you might want to go to YouTube to find out how to do it. Also, depending on your truck’s air compressor, you might only be able to inflate up to around 105-110. My air compressor does cut off at around 125 PSI, but somehow the glad hand inflator cannot use this amount. In order to be able to use this much, I think one would need to have a mechanic shop air hose connector directly on the truck’s main air tank. There are typically three air tanks, so you’ll have to do some research to find out. If you wanted to easily and quickly reach 110 PSI, I would recommend to find a brand new truck stop. Their fuel pumps usually have a tire inflator and it should work. Older truck stops might have damaged inflator hoses and they usually don’t fix them and just turn it off. Another option is to look for truck stop mechanic shops like Love’s or TA/Petro. They might have a free air hose adapter outside of their building. You just need to install the proper shop air hose adapter size on your hose which isn’t difficult at all, especially with YouTube around.

Was in a loves in IL and they told me all loves are discontinuing the tirepass at fuel islands; did see some hoses for tires a couple times but I don't know if it was a loves, but I just went into the loves repair shop and they filled all truck tires to 105 for free. Though I did check 2 tires with my own gauge and one read I think 100 and the steer 103 or so; but that may be my gauge being inaccurate, but I'll gladly keep those tips in mind, thank you

Honestly I don't care about saving the company money. It more about me being able to stay moving. I'm trying to determine how much of a factor the psi is playing in tire blow outs, cause if reducing pressure can keep me moving, and driving like I want. Then that's what I'll do, and just add air any time I have to go to the yard. I merely mentioned the bit about how they give an ass chewing as a way to illustrate how firm they are on that pressure amount, and as i guess a sort of back story/reason for the situation im in. I probably didnt need to mention that at all, but eh... Additionally, if the tire pressure is playing a significant roll in the blow outs, then it's also a safety issue. At the end of the day I don't care much about how much the company is spending, so long as I can keep moving, and stay safe while doing so.

I spec a tire pressure monitoring system on our power units that ties into our Omnitracs boxes. So the driver can see all the tire pressures and temperatures right on the screen in the truck, and I can also see them and the recent history of readings on my computer. I've had far more blow from under inflation than over. I've also had some blow that were perfectly inflated right up until they let go. Having that temp and pressure data available in those cases has been a game changer in terms of being able to get warranty money on those tires.

I tried running my drives at 115 cold, and then went down to California and all eight of my drives severely cracked and split in the tread. Not to mention based on tread wear, that is way over pressure for what they want. I have been running them at 90 and wear is much better. I'm getting a new set of Michelin drives next month and I will damn sure not try running them at 115.

If you’re ever unsure on something like that, go look at your wheels and tires and look at their ratings, and learn what the ratings even mean. Tires say max load is at 120psi COLD. That does not mean 120 is max pressure before danger, it’s just maximum load ratings. Also note, your tires are rated for more weight than an 80k gross truck would ever see. TLDR-it’s safe

Kind of an Andy Dwyer question here but everyone is saying they run their tires at xyz. When they heat up they jump 10-15psi so what are you guys tires really at when hot and you're just pulling over to honor pissjugman? Depending on the season i usually set my steers cold at 105 and drives at 95 and once rolling they'll get up to 115ish on steers and 105ish on drives. But if people are letting them get to 130 hot am I doing something wrong?

Negative, if you do choose to use the tire's maximum inflation pressure, the tire may wear faster, your vehicle may handle differently and your gas mileage may not be as great. It's typically recommended that you go with the manufacturer-recommended psi when inflating your tires, instead.

My steers are at 95 all the time. My drives are at 35 when I'm empty off road and 85 empty on road. They are at 55 off road loaded and 95-105 on road loaded. My trailer tires stay at 95 when I'm loaded on or off road (because I think it's pointless to adjust them to 85 for off road) and when I'm empty they aren't even on the ground as I carry my trailer on my tractor. If i saw a pressure reading of 120 on any of my tires I would hit a button and deflate them to the above pressures depending on situation.

It depends on which tire you're running and how heavy you'll be running it. On my Michelin steers I'm supposed to run them at max 105 psi for the max weight rating of 6175 per single axle tire (12350 lb steer axle limit). If I was to run less weight I believe I should be running them at lower pressure. My drives are supposed to be at 90 psi for 34000 lb, I can't remember the exact numbers now but also Michelins. If I was to run heavier I should increase the pressure, I'm not sure what the max rating on those tires is but I'm pretty sure my wheels would fail before the tires limit would be reached.

I've always heard your supposed to go by the vehicle or rim. What the tire says is for installation. Almost all trucks I ever driven I've kept them between 90 to 110. Yes over inflation can be a problem. I've only had a problem when there's something on the tire I didn't know about or dry rot and was told to run it.

Absolutely. It takes well over 300 psi to blow a tire, the rim will blow out way before a tire will. Tires normally fail due to heat, which is caused by under inflating. The sidewall flexing causes heat build up. More pressure stiffens the sidewall hence less flexing which leads to lower temps.

They're going for max mpg and to account for driver error. Steers on most trucks nowadays are 110 to 120. Drives and trailer (hauling 34k lbs) only need to be 75 psi. Anything more in a tire that's needed for the load, wears out the tire faster, puts more stress on suspension components due to the tire being too stiff to flex.

Wait, y'all actually check your tires? In all seriousness there are far too many variables to determine if 120 is safe or unsafe. It's likely not outside of the manufacturers recommendation based on tire, wheel and load. I run my 16 ply Michelin X line z energy steers at 110.

Mine are usually between 105-110. If they told me to I guess I would, it’s not my truck they can do whatever the want to it. As long as they pay me for driving that’s the only deal we have.

If the engineers at the tire manufacturing companies say 120 PSI is what the tire needs to be run at I think I'll listen to the engineers because they went to school a lot longer than I did

Do what it says on the sidewall. I split time between 3 different trucks with 3 different brands of tires, and run 110, 120, and 130 depending on the manufacturer's spec.

120 psi is the norm. Otherwise, tires wear out earlier

Tire pressure should be based on how much weight the tire has on it. Light freight tires should be lower psi than something that maxes out weight. Tire manufacturer have charts for this.

What are the tires rated for? You could call a professional tire shop and let them know the information on the sidewall of the tire, as well as how much weight you can expect, and they should be able to tell you what's best.

It should be ran at whatever the data plate says. It should be running the right tire with the right load rating. Don't go over the max tire inflation pressure. It will tell you on the side of the tire

It truly depends on what tire/hauling setup is on the trucks. Can’t just ignore factory suggestions and hope things are going to play out perfectly
