I wish! In the west midlands, I've heard tea instead of dinner before, but never dinner instead of lunch. I couldn't imagine saying "im going for my dinner break" at work, just feels wrong
It's also a language/country thing, in Catalan (Region of Catalonia/Valencia), we call midday food 'dinar' (dinner) and the evening food 'sopar' (supper)
It's a bit of a class thing as well. Northern working class people have their dinner in the middle of the day and their tea when they get home from work.
I work in a tech office and about half of us say we're stopping for our dinner break, the other half stop for their lunch break. Everyone understands.
Can confirm, I'm a middle class Northerner.
My family have always had breakfast, lunch and dinner, in that order.
Saying 'tea' in reference to dinner seems common.
I live up north, Sunday lunch is definitely a thing and always has been. Pubs advertise it as Sunday lunch, restaurants advertise Sunday lunch and loads of people have called it Sunday lunch forever.
For example, I’ve called it Sunday lunch for my entire life. “Shush”.
Dinner and Tea are interchangeable, Lunch is inarguably the meal around midday which is incidentally when you’re sitting down for…. Sunday Lunch.
Around 3-4pm? Bit late for lunch, bit early for dinner.
Dinner because it's the biggest meal of the day.
What time are you getting up on a Sunday to have a roast done by lunch time?
Normally between 7-9.
I don't understand how anyone working a 9-5 has dinner at like 5/5:30. Feel like by the time I finish work, make a cup of tea, decompress it's at least around 6:30 by the time I even start thinking about food.
Usually I've worked 7-4ish, fairly normal on sites so always ate at 5 or 530. Now I work usually 830 to 930 and it's taken a while to change habits. Still usually eat at about 6 though.
I eat dinner quite early. Typically 4pm-4.30pm. It might as well be called Tea as opposed to dinner.
Why?
My family cook dinner around 6-7 so they typically eat at 8pm so i have to be done earlier. No they don't cook my dinner and we don't eat together as a family (christmas dinner last year was pretty dire).
I come back from work around 4 - 4.30 so i'm starving and eat earlier. usually i have meals prepped earlier in the week so i can move quickly and just shove stuff in a microwave etc.
Eating dinner early means my evening isn't interrupted so i can enjoy 3 or 4 hours of uninterrupted gaming time.

Do i snack? occasionally. usually a couple of crackers around 8 or 9 after (give or take) an hour of exercise. But it depends on what i eat for tea. Some days i don't snack, other days i do.
5pm. We intermittent fast and find it easier to hold off eating during the night rather than wait all morning until lunchtime. WFH so can start cooking while still 'at work'.
As the wife and I are retired we tend to eat our main meal mid-afternoon, so I will often snack in the evening. But when I was working, snacking would be mainly a weekend thing
We tend to between 6 and 7, though can be a bit earlier during the week if everyone’s starving.
But tonight my parents didn’t have their’s until after 8, and I didn’t have at all because I was a silly woman and stuffed my face with maccies at 4pm. Guess that was my tea?
16:30 on weekdays as I work 18:00 - 22:00, on weekends typically between 18:00 and 20:00. When I get home from work I'll have a snack (like a steak slice or something), but on the weekends I snack pretty consistently in the afternoon.
On a week day, about 2pm and I have a snack when I finish work at 7pm. Weekend I'm at the bf's and he has dinner at gone 7 and I've about died of hunger lol
Dinner 6ish, 2nd dinner 10ish, 3rd dinner in about 18min. Haddock fish cake with mature cheddar cheese filling, with roasted sweet tomatoes and butter roasted corn on a cob. I'm so hungry 😋
Breakfast, elevenses, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, supper.
2 hours between each....
So it entirely depends on when I wake up, but generally 4 hours before I go to bed for dinner.
When? - when ever I want to eat it.
Call it? Dinner, food, lunch, all interchangeable and whatever times. However, tea is late afternoon, evening time. But we can still call it dinner or food, not really fussed.
Posh bastards for having a ‘correct label’ for it. Chill, live a little 😎
Tea about 17:00 if eating with our toddle, otherwise 19:30 onwards if eating after she’s asleep..
Then I have a snack, often some sort of protein yoghurt/pudding at 2300 before I sleep.
Many years ago a colleague in the West Midlands observed to me that ‘yow do doo well for yourself, dont’cha?’
Ever since, I have embraced the idea of doing well for myself in small things. I don’t live lavishly, we don’t go out much, don’t have sky/Netflix etc, or do computer games, or smoke etc. So we do well for us-selves in the food and drink line, but in a relatively modest way.
From top to bottom that’s Tarallini from Lidl, Fragata lemon stuffed olives via Amazon, Cornichons from Tesco and salted almonds from whatever random place.
The Sherry-equivalent was via the wine society, which if you buy a £40 share (and you get £20 of that back as credit against your first order) gives you access to really good value wines, with free home delivery. Generally better value than Tesco and plenty at £8 or less.
Tonight’s tea was roast chicken legs and wings with sarladaise potatoes (spuds in goose fat with garlic and rosemary. The goose fat is from Home Bargains), roast carrots and sautéed home-grown kale.
Lunch is somewhere between 12 and 1pm if I'm working, and then tea is between 7 and 7.30pm. Might have a biscuit with a mug of tea afterwards but I'm pretty much done after that.
I eat my meals when I'm hungry. So breakfast is usually as soon as I get up 7-8ish. Dinner 12-1 ish, tea between 5 and 7. And supper 10pm.
However any one of these (apart from breakfast) could be missed and another brought forward ,work and other commitments dependent.
- 06:30-07:00 Breakfast
- 10:30-11:00 Second breakfast (Coffee and pastry) aka
Elevensies
- 13:00 Lunch
- 15:30 Tea Break (biscuits optional as my hands are usually dirty)
- 19:00 Dinner
- 21:00 Supper
In that order, and I frequently miss most of these every day, it's actually rare I eat more than once unless it's the weekend. I also learnt the hard way not to eat anything in the two hours before going to bed.
Normally sit down for dinner between 6 and 7.30, just depends on the day. Sometimes a little later but never really earlier. Most often is prob 6.30/7. And no I don’t normally snack afterwards. But I do typically have a morning and afternoon snack.
Depends on the day, where I am and who's cooking. Last time I was at my fiancé's place we ended up eating g at 4:40pm as he ordered pizza and he was really hungry. I usually prefer some time between 5 and 8pm. If I'm cooking at his I try to aim for around 6ish. If I'm at the home I share with my parents and I'm cooking, it depends on when they're intending to eat as I have to submit to their routine, usually I get in the kitchen shortly before 7pm. If it's a Sunday and dad's doing the roast, it's usually between 5 and 6pm
I have turned my regime upside down.
I eat my main meal for breakfast and then lunch at 3 or 4pm.
In between I may have a snack.
Lost 42 lbs over 2 years & helps with my digestion.
Good luck
Most days I don't. I work 14.00 to 00.00 delivery driving so I'm never home. Some days I'll have a sandwhich, most days it's just a bag of crisps or something. No, I am not healthy.
I have mad respect for parents that can do that. I’ve got a serious aversion to other peoples food (if we’re out as a group in a restaurant I won’t try anything off anyone else’s plate), and it extends to my kids. If I even think about eating their leftover pasta it makes me gag. I wish I could as it would save money and waste.
If my child is around, 5-6ish.
If just the two of us, around 7.
Usually we have a light snack or supper around 9pm, like some chocolate digestives or a bit of toast.
There's a huge split between those who think dinner is at lunchtime and those for whom it's the evening meal (both views are trenchantly held in some quarters) so your answers might need to be interpreted in that light.
