It's also a language/country thing, in Catalan (Region of Catalonia/Valencia), we call midday food 'dinar' (dinner) and the evening food 'sopar' (supper)
View on Reddit #919016

3Cogs@reddit

It's a bit of a class thing as well. Northern working class people have their dinner in the middle of the day and their tea when they get home from work. I work in a tech office and about half of us say we're stopping for our dinner break, the other half stop for their lunch break. Everyone understands.

Can confirm, I'm a middle class Northerner. My family have always had breakfast, lunch and dinner, in that order. Saying 'tea' in reference to dinner seems common.

I live up north, Sunday lunch is definitely a thing and always has been. Pubs advertise it as Sunday lunch, restaurants advertise Sunday lunch and loads of people have called it Sunday lunch forever. For example, I’ve called it Sunday lunch for my entire life. “Shush”. Dinner and Tea are interchangeable, Lunch is inarguably the meal around midday which is incidentally when you’re sitting down for…. Sunday Lunch.

I eat dinner quite early. Typically 4pm-4.30pm. It might as well be called Tea as opposed to dinner. Why? My family cook dinner around 6-7 so they typically eat at 8pm so i have to be done earlier. No they don't cook my dinner and we don't eat together as a family (christmas dinner last year was pretty dire). I come back from work around 4 - 4.30 so i'm starving and eat earlier. usually i have meals prepped earlier in the week so i can move quickly and just shove stuff in a microwave etc. Eating dinner early means my evening isn't interrupted so i can enjoy 3 or 4 hours of uninterrupted gaming time. Do i snack? occasionally. usually a couple of crackers around 8 or 9 after (give or take) an hour of exercise. But it depends on what i eat for tea. Some days i don't snack, other days i do.

5pm. We intermittent fast and find it easier to hold off eating during the night rather than wait all morning until lunchtime. WFH so can start cooking while still 'at work'.

Many years ago a colleague in the West Midlands observed to me that ‘yow do doo well for yourself, dont’cha?’ Ever since, I have embraced the idea of doing well for myself in small things. I don’t live lavishly, we don’t go out much, don’t have sky/Netflix etc, or do computer games, or smoke etc. So we do well for us-selves in the food and drink line, but in a relatively modest way. From top to bottom that’s Tarallini from Lidl, Fragata lemon stuffed olives via Amazon, Cornichons from Tesco and salted almonds from whatever random place. The Sherry-equivalent was via the wine society, which if you buy a £40 share (and you get £20 of that back as credit against your first order) gives you access to really good value wines, with free home delivery. Generally better value than Tesco and plenty at £8 or less. Tonight’s tea was roast chicken legs and wings with sarladaise potatoes (spuds in goose fat with garlic and rosemary. The goose fat is from Home Bargains), roast carrots and sautéed home-grown kale.

Usually about 8 after my kid goes to bed. I give him his dinner at 5/5:30 straight after nursery and pick and his leftovers.

I have mad respect for parents that can do that. I’ve got a serious aversion to other peoples food (if we’re out as a group in a restaurant I won’t try anything off anyone else’s plate), and it extends to my kids. If I even think about eating their leftover pasta it makes me gag. I wish I could as it would save money and waste.

Dinner is my main meal of the day, so on a weekday it is breakfast, lunch, dinner (5pm) but on a Sunday it's breakfast, dinner (1pm), tea.

I don't have snacks in the house so that's pretty difficult! I'm also too lazy to go out and buy any (and don't own a car).

If my child is around, 5-6ish. If just the two of us, around 7. Usually we have a light snack or supper around 9pm, like some chocolate digestives or a bit of toast.

5, which most people I know think is too early but working nights I'd rather get it out of the way and have a couple of hours to kick back after

There's a huge split between those who think dinner is at lunchtime and those for whom it's the evening meal (both views are trenchantly held in some quarters) so your answers might need to be interpreted in that light.
