What are some ideas for gifts men actually like?

I've officially started my Christmas shopping and have basically sorted everyone in my life apart from my dad and stepdad. I don't want to just buy some random aftershave and socks as I feel everyone does that already and if it were me I'd be quite fed up getting the same thing each year from every person you know. My boyfriend was easy to buy gifts for as we're both the same age and into the same things e.g. gaming, clothes, shoes etc. But I always struggle when it comes to my dad and stepdad as they are not into those things. My dad is a mechanic and super into older cars and football but I feel like each year I'm repeating the same sort of gifts with these interests such as cologne, a football shirt and keyring? It's the same with my stepdad too. Any ideas for gifts that they would actually enjoy would be great :)

Opinel knives are quite good. Used to sell them in the shop I ran, certain people would go mad for them. Although a few fans have said they've changed the wood the handles are made from to a lower quality one.

Get something cool on it's own rather than their-hobby-themed – guy likes cars, not car keychains (though I'm sure you mean well so don't take it as a criticism). Finding something cool also requires knowing what they like but that is doable. For example, if they BBQ, those coal starter chimneys are cool as hell and barely anyone owns one

I actually found the perfect key-chain for a mate that he uses, it's a little Turbo keychain and if you blow into the main nozzle, it spins. He's been chuffed with it. I kept it a simple colour, a good size too as he's very minimalist.

Yeah, that’s a nice idea. I’ve found myself to be underwhelmed by a lot of gifts in the past though and it’s disappointing when you put effort into others gifts (even though I know people have put thought into my gifts, I wonder if I should have just made a list). I have this with my dad every year. He has over £200 in amazon vouchers from last Christmas, still. Its his birthday in a couple of weeks and I've bought vouchers for the fancy pie shop near his work that he goes to for lunch a couple of times a week. Man loves a pie. Previously have bought resturant vouchers, theatre tickets, tattoo shop vouchers. Basically things to do rather than just "stuff". I've also bought fancier versions of stuff he likes - I replaced the grey jumper from next that he wears a lot with a lyle and Scott Version - I bought him decent quality slippers instead of cheap ones. At Christmas last year my sister bought him some crocs and they are never off his feet.

My mother recommended a voucher for a bakery my stepdad always ends up buying stuff from for father's Day and I think that's still his favourite gift along side with some mug I got him years ago. I usually fall back onto a dvd or something Wallace and gromit or help cleaning his car. He rarely gets time to watch them and would happily buy pirated if he went abroad as much as he used to! If it was a certain film he loved them I would think about it but he's got purpose built shelves which he finds some steelbooks don't fit. He's got a brilliant Stanley Kubrick boxset his son got him years ago that doesn't fit anywhere so he has to keep it in a cupboard as my mum doesn't like the big boxes out! I'm going to try and make a point getting to watch it with him over the holidays as we rarely get a moment together as my mum is very needy when I visit. It's my birthday on 26th so maybe ill make us watching his film our thing that we do in the afternoon.

My Dad never wanted stuff so I used to gift my Dad a day out, like going on a boat ride, a sporting event or going on the London Eye. I chose things my Mum wouldn't enjoy so it was a special Father - Daughter day out making memories. I'd buy a photo frame and fill it with pictures about where we were going to wrap up as the gift. After the trip I'd add a photo of us to the frame as a reminder of our day.

Football one, there may be a history book of his team that you can personalise, which has old newspaper reports in it (I got this for my birthday, and it's one of the BEST gifts I've ever received). Also, depending on how much you want to spend, hospitality at football. Mechanic one, what about an experience day driving a car at a racetrack? Do either of them drink alcohol? A brewery/winery/distillery tour might be good. A wine or beer flight, perhaps? If they like making stuff themselves, there are many kits for beer/wine/gin/sausage making. Also growing weird vegetables.

Honestly, my advice is to stop judging gifts for men as if they were gifts for women your age. It took me decades to realise my dad doesn’t like the thoughtful, beautifully wrapped gifts. Something he can eat shoved in a carrier bag would make him quite content. Socks, too. They always come in. As a woman, but an increasingly old woman, I actually wouldn’t mind practical shit now either. Some trainer socks I could run in would be nice. A baking tray. I’d have hit you with the tray in my 20s had you bought it as a gift, but now I’m old, my needs/tastes have changed. I can afford to buy myself stuff, so things I like are the things I need that I haven’t got round to yet. It’s really difficult to not judge a gift you would personally hate. But, sometimes, that’s what the recipient actually wants. And my dad couldn’t care less about the packaging, as much as it makes a difference to me.

Obviously very person specific, but the best gift I had last year was a Lego set. I loved making it. Also, quality tools. I'd rather have a good hammer or set of quality screwdrivers than a cheap cordless drill. Other things in the gift price range: Photoshop license for a year; certain watches (g shocks are great); quality shaving brush and soap if they wet shave. I also like secrid wallets and buy those as gifts sometimes. Basically I like gifts that are for things I want but wouldn't but for myself as they are slightly more luxury than necessity.

I get you and I get her. Being ungrateful is a bit strong, maybe. What if she would open a savings account or a separate piggy bank sort of thing, dedicated to a thing you really want, and help you save for it by depositing money toward your goal? I would find that pretty sweet, actually! In the 'Ah thank you darlin' that is so sweet' type of way... but very much also in the 'Dude! Sweet!' type 😂. Honestly an easy gift for her, but also one that will eventually make you very happy. Bright sides only, I'd say.

Coffee machine Voucher for a nice restaurant Airbnb gift card Sunglasses, you can't go wrong with Ray-Ban New Wayfarers Casio G Shock ga-2100 watch A really nice bottle of wine from a proper wine shop that knows what they're talking about A telescope, you can get a tabletop one for around £60 and you'd be surprised what you see with it. Optics will be poor but you can see the moon up close and even the rings of saturn and the moons of Jupiter. Hopefully some of these might provide some inspiration to somebody. Thanks.

we got one of these from the in laws last Christmas for an overnight stay, but it’s basically only to be used mid week. And the hotels have blocked out random weeks where you can’t use it. And I live in london, I don’t want to go to York on a Tuesday night. They meant well because we do like a little local night away, but the ts and cs have made it impossible for use to actually find a place and date to use it

The booking experience isn't actually integrated into the website, so you have the homework of booking it yourself & hoping it goes through. But then they have no incentive to give you a good experience or value for money. I got one for a wine tasting... somewhere I could only get to by driving.

This is what I like to do for my grandparents. Neither of them will just tell anyone what they want because they have everything they need. They're both retired and live a very quiet life, so I don't know what hobbies they have except watching TV, and my grandad does a lot of woodworking, but as I said, they have everything they need. Yeah. Loads of options for quite a few types of alcohol. Brandy, Rum, Whiskey, Wine can get crazy too, Tequila even has some nice top shelf options. I'm sure there's as many Gin varieties as days in the year now too although I'm not really a Gin drinker myself. If you notice someone drinks a certain top shelf whiskey a lot and you want to treat them check online, theres probably better versions of that even.

I'd just buy pretty much anything that's slightly too expensive for them to justify buying themselves. I don't mean it has to be expensive, just slightly too much for what it is. As an example yesterday I bought a "FAF desk pad" as a gift. Pushing £30 for a pad of paper in a brass holder to scribble notes on is a bit ridiculous - nobody could justify it. But if it's given as a gift you don't need to justify it, it's a very satisfying object to have to hand - and it's completely useful. What else.. Oh, nice knife sharpener is always good if they don't have one. Nothing more manly than ensuring every butter-knife in the house is honed to a razor-edge. I love my Warthog or something like a Lansky for extra fiddling. For mechanic dad, pretty much every class of tool has the "hand-made by 12-generatation Japanese craftsman" or similar. Or the Wiha allen keys I've been wanting for years, despite already owning allen keys and only using them a couple of times a year.

My favourite gifts have always been practical things I will actually use but maybe feel reluctant to spend money on. My in-laws so far have bought be a kit bag for work, a multi tool for work, hard wearing Kevlar gloves for work, base layers for work. The list goes on and on. My partner is a good listener she knocks gifts out the park and she doesn’t spend lots of money. If I talk about a poem I remember from school or a band I’ve always liked she’ll buy the book of poetry with that poem in it or find an old LP of the band that kind of thing. Something I find really frustrating to receive as a gift would be tickets to some kind of event I only have the most tenuous interest in. Like my cousin bought me tickets to British touring cars, at no point ever in my life have I ever been interested in or expressed interest in touring cars.

The secret really is to listen, talk to them, and ask if you can peek at their Amazon wish list. A lot of the suggestions of jumpers, creams etc wouldn't suit the men in my family. Experiences are great, but you need to know their schedule well. Ones that have gone down well in my family have been tank driving, mushroom foraging, and a brewery tour. Honestly, if your husband is more technically inclined than average, a 3d printer is a great gift if you have a big budget. Could be a good shared interest for you both, and if you don't want a brand new one, you can get them from Facebook marketplace for about £100. But I would recommend the model I have now, which is a creality ender 3 v3 se. I also had a sovol sv06, which was good, but my new one is 2x faster for nearly the same price which is why I swapped printers. Just beware 3d printing isn't for impatient people as it takes a LOOOOONG time to print things. Also, I use blender (good and free) to model things, and I'm still learning a lot 7 months in. If you look at my posts on my profile you'll probably see some things I've printed.

I have the same issue with my dad, coupled with the fact he is physically handicapped and unable to do any type of hobbies apart from reading/watching TV etc. So last year, I bought an exotic meat hamper, things like buffalo steak and ostrich sausages. I've also looked into experiences, and although this may not be relevant for your parents, some places provide audio and video tours for people who can only visit virtually.

God knows. What do you get a teetotal, non smoking vegetarian diabetic? He doesn't like golf, football, rugby, fishing or cars. His main hobby is his job- gardening. I know nothing about gardening. His other interest is collecting CDs and home audio system stuff. He's got thousands of CDs, so I've no idea what he has and hasn't got. Chocolate's out because of the diabetes. No alcohol obviously. Can't do barbecue stuff because it sets off mum's asthma. No point getting him sports related stuff because he doesn't like it. I'm deaf, so I can't exactly choose audio equipment stuff. Oh, and he's got loads of clothes, socks and shoes already and doesn't need any more. Suggestions on a postcard. M

You can never have too many tools as a mechanic 😅 don't know how expensive it is, but if you can find a tool box that has lots of stuff in it, I'm sure he'll appreciate it. Men in general will appreciate anything practical and/or funny. So a t-shirt with a funny quote or something would do the trick, for example.

Practical gifts. If it has a useful function most men would be more than happy. My better three quarters (other half but she’s waaay better than me) always gets me a tool or something that I can use at work (I’m a Sparky). Do they have a specific car, bike or scooter that they want or have from their youth? You can always get something related to that. Or if they have space get a vintage sign for the workshop. But in all honesty your dad and stepdad would be grateful for anything that you get them.

I got my mate who is also a mechanic a gum ball machine filled with 10mm sockets last year, he said it was the best present he had ever received and raved about it. Cost a bit as it took 88 sockets to fill the plastic balls, but as he helps me out regularly and barely charges mates rate was a bargain.

The only gift I ever got my dad that he seemed to actually like was a light up yo-yo. I bought normal boring socks and things then just saw the yo-yo and got it as well, no idea what I was thinking. After that, every time we were waiting in a queue or just generally standing around the yo-yo would come out and he’d start doing tricks with it (that I had no idea he could do). In the end it was confiscated by my mum after he accidentally smashed the glass lampshade in the living room with it. It was fun while it lasted.

as a guy - I hate “bit and bobs” and clutter. I really like gifts I can “consume”. Not just eating. I kinda groan when someone gets me something I have to keep forever; sounds really selfish but I’m picky and fairly minimal. I'm usually easy, even socks is a decent gift for me as it stocks up my supply that eventually gets lost over the year. Practical things are cool too. If its edible or drinkable, even better. If said person is still not sure, I'll either just straight up tell them what I want, or ask for vouchers / money instead to get my own gifts. I hate "gimmicky" once off gifts the most, the kind you'll likely throw in the bin after using once. Stereotypical "manly" stuff can be more hit than miss too.

Best present I've ever recieved. Wife got me a driving experience for my 40th 4 years ago. I got to drive an Aston Martin Vanquish, Ferrari la Ferrari, Lambhorgini Gallardo and an Ariel Atom! I also got to go out for 3 laps as a passenger with a pro driver in my car of choice. I chose the Atom, as those things are just insane! It really was an amazing experience!

It's gonna depend partly on what they like, my mums partner like to read so I buy him books, but I wouldn't buy him a video game like I would my brother-in-law. Same as my Dad is happy to receive anything Arsenal related, but my brother-in-law wouldn't. Why are you Christmas shopping in September? This is really stupid in my view. It's a terrible time to buy gifts. Sure collect ideas, but buying is a bad time. If it's something that the gift receiver might want, you are increasing the chances of them buying it anyway and already having it. You are going to be outside of any return window buying it extremely early. And you are missing all the main sale periods. Black Friday for example and the Amazon prime thing next month. It's just madness to buy right now. Sure, shop and start making a list but buying now is insanity. I keep a list all year around, in my app of choice (Trello), have a list for each person, and whenever I see something they might be interested in, I add it to the list, or if they mention something they like, add it to the list etc, then when it's closer to christmas/sale times, I check the list, see what is still relevant and buy what is needed. That's how you preplan, not by buying in September...

Consider experiences and things you do together rather than just stuff, as people get older, they mostly have a lot of the stuff they want/like, unless they have specially asked for something, if you think you have found something 'neat' or cool that they might want, you prob haven't, because if they really wanted it, they would have bought it anyway and now they have to find space for this thing you bought and maintain it/use it, otherwise they seem ungrateful. Else consumables are always good, food, alcohol, aftershave etc. But particularly with someone like your dad, they might enjoy doing an experience or having time with you.

Depending on your price range there are lots of activities related to old cars. Could get a drive in a particular favourite. Trip to a car show, event or something of that ilk. But go for something you can do together, or at least where you can be there for the experience. And just some food or drink items for an on the day present, not the main gift so doesn't have to be anything fancy, just a bit of a treat.

What kind of old cars? Is there a magazine subscription you could buy for him? Or even membership for a vintage car club? We have an old VW and being 50 I quite enjoy the occasional magazine. What about niche clothing for his type of vintage car? Most vintage cars have a ‘scene’ and do regular meet ups, mini festivals or rally’s…. You could buy him a ticket for one of those. I’d be chuffed bits if someone bought me a ticket to a local vw festival with a card with a few quid in it to spend at the auto jumble!

it depends on your budget. speaking for myself "Stuff" isnt really what i want as if i want it i typically buy it or already have it so its really hard to get a surprise gift (but if you get it right then its uber special) now im in my 40s i prefer an experience event instead of stuff as well in my case i like to cook so 2 years ago it was a butchery course and as a result of being confident enough to butcher deer at home i have a load of hides so this year was a hide tanning course. if he likes mechanical things how about a tank driving experience or a steam train driver experiance or even if you can afford it or as a group gift a track day in the kinds of cars he likes. or even a day at the football. or races or whatever he likes.  but remember if your budget isnt great most men are easy to please and you can do something very simple like have him /them around for a good home cooked meal and a few drinks.

I do my dad and father in law food hampers of all their favourite biscuits, sweets, beers, jerky, nuts, sauce mixes, pot noodles, etc. Other gifts I but them are books, stuff with “Grandad” or photos of the kids on like mugs / socks / bookmark, photo jigsaw, shirt. Vouchers for their favourite restaurants or golf courses, theatre tickets, cinema vouchers. An experience day? If he is into cars you might be able to find a car driving experience day where you drive fancy cars.

Some of my more recent ones: Steodad is impossible to buy for... has a triple garage full of tools and works on his project cars and random DIY stuff as a hobby. Got him a kettle that runs on his drill battery because he always moans his coffee is cold when he works away. 10/10 gift and half his crew now have one. He loves a red wine and any excuse to Potter with a project so got him a wine making set with some starter packs... he loved it. Next year I upgraded some of his kit and he loves it. Gonna get him a still next year. Sister is hard to buy for too... aparantly the best gift she has received was last years birthday from me. She LOVES wild camping but she is tiny and struggles to carry everything she wants to take, I got her a camling stool that weighs NOTHING and she fucking loves it. Aparantly second best was the trangia stove with all the accessories I got her the year before. Mother is also a fucker to buy for because she is retired and not short a few Bob... shopping is her main hobby. Every year she gets bought a meal for 2 with tasting wines to a Michelin restaurant. She loves eating out in places like that but just refuses to spend the money (though a few k on a handbag is aparantly reasonable in her world) Basically I try to find things that fit their interests, I know they don't have, but also don't cheap out on. I research. I have cupboards full of kitchen gadgets and gimmicks bought for me kver the years because I'm a chef and love to cook at home too... maybe some non pro's appreciate the weird gadgets but I'm a chef... I do not need "time saving" gadgets... however I will say my sister knocked it out the park when she got me an annova for my birthday. She knows I waterbath a lot of stuff at work to take home... having one at home is great and takes up hardly any space as it clips onto anything.

Might be a little late now, but a tip for next year; whenever I'm out and about with my wife and she sees something she likes, I make a note of it. Same if I see anything I think she will like, or we talk about something she might like. Then, come Christmas, or her birthday, I look through the list and decide what I want to get her. Saves me having to conjure something up from nothing, let's get know that I do pay attention, and she's guaranteed to like at least some of the things I buy her 🤣. I've had some really good reactions from her doing this, as it might just be something she mentioned in passing, but really loves it.

What is your budget? I find it hard to buy for my Dad as well, as he could get anything he wants but is increadibly frugal so doesn't apprciate lavish gifts. I bought him a flight in a cessna a few years ago and he still hasn't used it. He is also a very hands on guy, ex engineer, so does enjoy tools and stuff but likes to get them cheap secondhand. I often default to lovely pictures of him and my son. He also loves his dogs. I like going on etsy and getting an artist to paint his dogs or him and my son from a picture I send the artist. Maybe if you have some cool pictures of the old cars he has, you could get them painted. Or organise for a photographer to come round and take pictures of them. If he has a cool garage that he spends a lot of time in, then some antique signs or memorbila from the racing world would be cool to hang up there. What cars has he got or loves? Sounds like he is a manly man, so like others have said, pivot in to other manly stuff. BBQ is a great one and the chimney starter I have is fantastic. A butchery course. Woodworking supplies or course. I recently got in to woodworking and love making things around the house.

Do your dad and step dad actually want gifts? My dad is not much interested in stuff, he is polite about gifts but it really wouldn't both him not to get anything. And he would be find getting socks because they are useful, so if they are comfortable and the right size they are actually a good gift. And I think as people get older they accumulate more stuff and it is harder to find anything that isn't just more clutter, unless they have hobbies that need new Stuff. I think consumables are generally good - if you know what he likes, get that , whether it's a bottle of whisky, nice wine, good quality chocolate etc. It always feels like a bit of a cop-out - I know if I buy my dad wine it's going to be served to guests / shared with my mum so it isn't just for him, but it is at least going to get used and enjoyed. My brother is also hard to buy for as he tends to be ultra specific - you can't just buy him a jumper because it matters a lot exactly how it feels and fits . And again, he's not big into gifts for the sake of it - one year he asked for a load of maths text books as he was doing an OU degree and they are expensive. Which was handy as I got to buy things he would definitely use, but it's not overly festive! In recent years, I've done things like vouchers for things like Dishpatch, and small consumables like fancy chocolates on the basis that they can eat them or re-gift them and don't need to find space in the house for more stuff. If you live near by, would taking him out for a meal in a local pub or restaurant be an option? Magazine subscriptions can be good if you can find something that interests him

I don't understand the love for Lego among adults. Used to love it when I was a kid and when you just had a huge bag of blocks with only a few specialist pieces such as wheels and doors and used your imagination to create endless amounts of things. Now it seems all the creativity has been sucked out of it in the pursuit of each set making a specialised model which then becomes a sub-standard ornament. I'm not including the more generalised sets like mindstorms which seems genuinely versatile and creative.

I won a Lego set recently and, tbh, it's just nice to do. My grandad also loves taking apart and rebuilding the ones I had as a kid that are at his house. Model building in general is just nice, especially when you can't fuck it up too badly (i.e. no painting/gluing). I don't do it often, but I was given one of those flat pack style wooden ones last year and spent a few days putting it together. It scratched a similar itch. It's almost meditative - following the instructions, hunting down the right bits and seeing it come together.

Gifts for men, and gifts for older dads are two different things. We've just resorted to asking our dads what they want. Most of the time it's nice socks, a contribution to a charity, or to something they are already buying; their houses are already full of toot and 'Best Dad in the World' mugs from years gone by. Occasionally though, there will be a real golden ticket. If there's an event coming up related to their specific interests that's within your budget, absolutely go for that. Maybe (for your dad) a nice handcrafted card telling him you're giving him money towards a season ticket (if he buys that sort of thing?) Or a ticket for a match that you will go with him to?

I'd suggest buying experiences, with you joining them (2 separate experiences for both men). Something like cookery, a day out at golf, visit a theme park, visit a brewery if they like beer (just some ideas out of many). They love you, so gifting them your time, a bonding activity and special memories means a lot more than something physical to be appreciated for all of 5 minutes and put away in a cupboard or drawer. If a day out includes the ability to purchase a memento/souvenir, get something special at the gift shop to reinforce the day out together.

Maybe instead of searching for gifts for men, search for gifts for mechanics, that might help you find something more specific to their hobbies which you won’t have thought about. Maybe something hobby-adjacent, you said your dads into old cars and a mechanic, have you thought about a model set of his favourite car? Lego, airfix (if they do cars), 3d jigsaws, that kind of thing. I believe there’s also similar types of things for some football stadiums, depending on what team they support.

I got my Dad socks at his request - a luxury brand he couldn't jusify buying himself and a year's supply so 20 pairs of socks. He is older, has everything he could possibly want and doesn't want clutter. He even has enough alcohol to see him out. Socks are not always a bad present. The other good one is an experience - a meal out, a tour of place of interest that you go on with him, a play or whatver event is his interest. Take your Dad to a football match - even a lower league match is still fun if price an issue. Do a track day. Drive a train. The gift is both the experience and you spending time with him.

There’s a few things that are expected/wanted, like a book of crossword puzzles , and a hamper of good wine & champagne, and about every 5 years the soft house slippers need replacing. Otherwise, in other years it’s been theatre tickets , a load of meat pies for freezer, craft beer subscription, kindle, walking shoes ( that’s the hobby ), a custom made tweed jacket , set of Indian spices to make curries, soft leather gloves , a fortnums hamper , a national trust pass, Cuban cigars , handmade chocolates, a Japanese knife set , dinner at Michelin rated restaurant near them, signed and personalized book from author they read, or a cooking class to make pizza.

In general if you were to get me a token gift that won't ever be used I'd rather have the money. I wouldn't be offended that you haven't tried to find me the perfect present, quite the opposite actually. I'd buy myself something that I want guilt free. I'd look on etsy for things related to their hobbies. My (emotionally adopted) Dad is into motorcycle racing so I've bought him coasters with his favourite bike on them, posters for his man cave, a framed schematic for the bike, etc. He's also partial to a drink so before he slowed down I'd get him something expensive he wouldn't buy himself. Other ideas are experiences or days out related to their hobbies. Or even a weekend away at a nice hotel. He's asked for it since I was a teenager because it was cheap and he knew I could afford it on my pub wage, but also useful and he still asks for it now I'm 26 and could afford something nicer. I think if they haven't asked for something specific, getting something nice that they wouldn't usually buy themselves is usually what I do. Like fancy chocolates from hotel chocolate or similar. Depends on your budget but your dad that's into cars, would probably love a torque wrench. Good ones are not cheap but it's one of those things car people would love but usually don't buy themselves. We just 'that'll do' on bolts and nuts but they usually should be torqued correctly. I tend to go to Tescos and buy 12 of those 3 for £5.50 large bottles of lager they do, they have quite a range of random ones that he wouldn’t normally drink or see in a pub - and he enjoys trying random beers from around the world. He’s a sucker for bar snacks, Biltong, fancy pork scratchings (massive glass jar of Coleman’s mustard flavoured Snaffling Pig pork scratchings went down a treat one year), nuts, basically anything consumable because I know he will use and enjoy them. Farm shops are also awesome for finding different/local beers, sauces, and snacks. I tried to diversify one year…the screw-on-the-wall can crusher I bought a few years ago still hasn’t been put up (despite his constant concern for how much of the recycling bin gets used up), but the beers always get polished off!

If he's into a specific car or even make of car you can look at getting a set of vintage Haynes manuals. Depends on how much he will need out over the intricacies of it all. My parents have been living abroad for a while now and gifts were always hard to do so we ended up making reservations at local restaurants for a table of 4 so they could take friends. Chuck however much you want towards the bill and they love it. It is a problem, I never know what people can get me as I just tend to get it myself if I want things and it tends to be quite specific. Like I need a new multi-tool but I'd research it really well and try various ones and get one that is just right. I have family who may hear I want something like this and just get any old penknife which I then feel I have to use and I put the good one on the back burner. I normally have a list that I add to as my family complain/talk about stuff. Then at Xmas or whatever occasion, will buy them that. It has gone down a lot better than just buying stuff that I think they would like. I bought my dad an airfryer, but pretended it was a parcel I had ordered for myself and was late. (I stopped at his after moving back to my home country for 2 weeks.) So then when he got it, he apparently swore out loud until he opened it and realised it was an air fryer which he had mentioned like. 5 x times while I had been there. Most adults just want peace and quiet, food, drink and loved ones. I would just find a way to do that. Take them and their close loved ones out for a nice meal a few weeks before xmas. Or after. I bought my dad a gift card to a fancy restaurant to take his lady friend one year too, that went down well too.

Take him out for something rather than a physical gift. Instead of the usual socks and book combo I tend to get, I took my dad to a basketball match for his xmas present last year, we had a great time. It doubled up as a gift to myself as well plus he ended up getting the drinks which was handy given the post-xmas deficit.

Ask them directly what they want, tell them your budget, tell them to send you a link to the item, purchase, give. Or make them make wish lists, so they dont know exactly what they’re getting, but whatever it is, they would actually want it.

I get my dad and FIL a platter of cheese each year. They love it and it gets used up. Dad also gets books. Again, they read them, and a new pile for next Christmas makes sense.

Personally I love experience day gifts, you say dads into older cars. Going to guess older American muscle may be interesting, you can get driving experience days for them, just looked virgin have a 65 Mustang drive available.

Try to get that daft little thing that they buy themselves every week usually food. My dads is angel delight and I bought him 3 packs of all 4 flavours to go with his usual bottle of vodka for his birthday. He was very happy as it meant he didn’t have to go get some more for a few weeks and he found it funny.

Take your dad to a vintage car show, they're normally held in the summer but you can probably get tickets early, and give them to him for Christmas. Get your step dad tickets to see his favourite team, or some kind of football experience day? For next year keep a list on your phone of things they mention they like or want. If they buy it themselves then remove it, but just constantly add to the list. I do it for my SO and come our Anniversary, Birthday's, or Christmas I always have something I can get him. There's always a variety of price ranges on there too so I can always find things within my budget.
