There are about 1000 F-15s in service worldwide and about 1000 F-35s \[1\], and the long term loss rate of F-15s is about two per year. A loss rate of two F-35s per year is not out of line for an aircraft in this sort of role.
It's just dramatic because it's a new aircraft, it's expensive, and there's intense effort on ensuring the tech does not fall into adversarial (Russian, Chinese, N Korean, Iranian, etc) hands so operators really, really want to find the remains.
\[1\] yes, actual numbers are about 1100 and 900, but the former decreases and the latter increases
