Husband lost his due to medical restriction. Was supposed to be for 3 month but DVLA so slow took nine to get it back. He works for Yorkshire ambulance preparing vehicles so it really affected his job, luckily they changed his hours so he could use public transport and got a teammate to move vehicles for him. Very distressing as he only lost his licence due to the antidepressants the doctor put him on and yet losing his licence made him more depressed and put a strain on our marriage as I had to run him around a lot and I work unsociable hours.

I’ve only been pulled once in the last 10yrs and that was to be weighed as the van was looking totally suspect, so if you drove sensibly and had your cars mot’d insured under someone else’s name you’d probably get away with it.

I did because of medical issues, I got the bus to work which wasn't the end of the world, then started cycling which was actually brilliant. Quicker if anything around much of the city, and got free exercise out of it. My wife drives which obviously helps for trips best driven (mainly visiting family and a big shop) but times I went alone train was alright.

Sold the motorbike and bought a push bike, it really is noticeable how much you dont need to drive when you cant. You end up getting a job far closer to home, save a small fortune on fuel, tax, etc, get fitter, dont need to earn as much etc etc etc. One of the best things i ever did was that wheelie 🤣

Surprisingly little since COVID in my current position. I WFH, so don't need to drive to work, and my current office it's easier to get the train to than drive. Husband doesn't like being a passenger so he drives when we're both together. Some months I don't drive anywhere already lol. Main things that would be affected would be what I do when he's away with friends (probably end up having a grocery delivery if I ran out of stuff) and going to the doctor's if I need to would necessitate more time off for me to walk there. 25mins walk vs 5mins drive, so doable but an extra hour to work lol.

For me, work is at home. Shopping is delivered due to the remote location. So is 9/10 of everything else - just works out cheaper. There's a bus three times a day to a local(ish) town. Biggest problem I think would be getting the 10 miles to the doctor. Would cost a min of £30 for alternative transport if my wife wasn't available to drive. So relatively minimal changes.

Never been able to due to medical issues. You just make do. I'm lucky the public transport is decent where I am at. I'm looking into a long range mobility scooter or a ebike. Bike is cheaper for the range and will help keep me fit but I have concerns about using it on the road and the cycling infrastructure isn't quite there yet. Plus if my health takes a turn as it is want to do it may become useless. Mobility scooter is more expensive for the range but a more sure option. Though I worry about potental discrimination. I don't look disabled and folks can be exceptionally rude and mean when folks who don't look disabled use accessability tools or facilities.

I see this a lot on reddit. Things like "you are lucky" or "must be privileged" at the idea someone doesn't drive for work/food. I never learnt to drive because I couldn't afford to. What fucking privilege is that? If I wanted to go to a shop I had to walk or cycle. If I wanted to go to a shop that wasn't Tesco or Iceland growing up it was a 12 mile round trip to the next town over. The answer was I just didn't go very often. Found a job I could get to by bus, moved to that town and then walked to work instead. Apprenticeship wages, after rent and food I had very little left over. Still no chance at even considering a car. Being so poor that you can't afford to drive isn't lucky.

Totally agree, spent 30 years commuting 1¾ hours (door to desk) each way into London - funnily enough effectively carless* for much of that time - and now reaping the rewards. Interesting though that most of the replies where people had done it are on the lines of "it wasn't that bad", isn't it? *I had a 1960 unrestored Humber Super Snipe for much of the time - whether it wanted to go anywhere or not was pretty much in the lap of the gods. For long journeys I hired.

Not much would change, for me at least. I work in London and live a 20min walk from the nearest station and I have access to TFL services. All of my friends live in London boroughs, so I use TFL buses to see them. I do own a car, but I don't really drive unless I need something in my immediate local area/am doing something where public transport is not a pragmatic choice. On top of this, I don't actually _like_ driving. Despite being only in my early(ish) 30s, I'm looking to be able to give it up in the next few years or so.

Got banned when I was 18 for a long list of offences, got a really fast motorcycle instead so I could outrun the police. I had little judgement of right and wrong back then, I was a danger to the public, I should have been locked up. I received treatment from a psychiatrist and have good mental exercises now that keep the checks and balances in place and age has silenced the..."yeah just do it , it will be okay" .

Been there done that. It was hideous. I had to get three buses to and from work which took two to two and a half hours each way, no fun when you're suffering with brain fog, chronic fatigue and near constant headaches. Not to mention expensive. Had to go to visit relatives via train, which was also expensive and very tiring. Replying on other people to take you to places is kind of humiliating and I hated doing it. The day I got my licence back I cried with joy. (I had brain surgery)

I’m currently in this situation. I don’t drive at the moment, I want to drive but I suspect with my disability I can’t do an emergency stop. I want to be assessed by a driving instructor, but if I am not safe, I don’t want them to report me because I need my license as an ID. If I’m not safe I just won’t drive. I can’t afford a passport to replace the driving licence at the moment.

Current no one knows if I am not safe because I don’t drive. (I hold a full licence)I might me ok, I might not be. Physio said normally a relative drives you to a quiet road where you have a go at driving, emergency stops etc. My local doctors won’t report to the DVLA because I am not driving a car so am not a risk. I’ve also had no driving incidents related to my disability. I’m just “worried” if I can drive safely.

What exactly are you worried about if you don't mind me asking? If you worry you'll physically be able to press the brake hard enough you could always look at hand controls although a lot of modern cars will now brake automatically and if they sense you applying the pedal quickly they'll apply maximum force regardless of how hard you press the pedal.

Same as when the car is in the garage for maintenance, I walk. It happens that the garage is 3-4 hours walk away so that is what it is. Buses are too infrequent and cost more than a taxi to use them round here, and walking is good exercise. An electric bike is a good investment if you need to get from A to B quicker than walking and you can hitch a trailer if you need to carry stuff. You get exercise at the same time because they are pedal assist. If the reason you lost your licence is through health then a mobility scooter is a good choice, they don’t require a licence, insurance or even any medical as anyone can use them but you have to drive at 4mph on the pavement and 8mph on the road.

I'm a HGV driver by trade and have been at the same company forever so seen this many times over the years, license checks are every 3 months without fail now but going back a few years they were just random and there were a couple of drivers it was rumoured were banned, one guy suddenly sold his car and walked to work everyday for a year and still drove a truck as normal, another just started ringing in sick or swapping shifts whenever they were due to go on the road (the majority of their work was shunting within the yard) he still drove his own car but was a twin so would've gotten away with it, the company we work for you never get pulled over not even by the dvsa so licence is never going to get checked although now driving data is uploaded daily so you wouldn't get away with it anymore, both have since left the business for unrelated reasons. As for medical this happens a lot to hgv drivers our place they stay on full pay and either work in the warehouse or a depot close to their home until they get their license back, there's a guy in there atm who got banned, he held his hands up and they kept him on but I'd imagine he's on warehouse pay and it won't be guaranteed he's coming back when he gets his license back.

I'd need a new job straight away, I cannot get to my work by bus easily, assuming I could still walk easily I'd have to walk 20 minutes to the other side of a river, bus for 15 mins then walk another 20. I walk to work and back, so thats not an issue. Issue will be my wife and my kid. Wife doesnt drive, so i need to take her to and back from her work. Same with kid. School runs would be pain in butt. I could use bus or taxi, but it will add up quite quickly. Shopping? might be an issue. We prefer lidl and one of our polish/eastern european shop, which is other side of town. So that would suck. Lidl doesnt do home deliveries. so again, taxis and racking up cost quite quickly. Weekend trips would be another pain in butt. We constantly drive around and enjoy different places. It would be difficult again. I still remember us going to cambridge from peterborough. few hrs in bus. or to skegness with train, or hunstanton with multiple buses.. frick that, i would be devastated if i had to do all of that, search for bus, search for times, travel long and afar with bus/train and must return back in time, while with car, i can set gps, find parking and enjoy my day and return whenever we want. Then there are our yearly long multiday trips around uk, camping trips. all canceled. all money spend on taxis and buses.. Whoever says that we dont need cars, is an idiot tbh.

I had to surrender mine for a year for medical reasons. I got myself a bike to get around easier. Luckily my main source of income was within walking distance of my house but the job that made my working time up to full time I had to drop because I couldn't get there and back. Again Luckily, I live pretty central in the town so most things I needed were easily within walking/cycling distance. Whilst I had to give up a few things, overall it was too bad but it could have been had I not been living so close to the towns conveniences and my job. I also don't have any children which I think helped it be an easier thing for me to deal with.

I'm epileptic, so I'm in the serious medical episode camp. Honestly, it's absolutely fine, I just walk and get public transport most places, which is often free because of my disability. Day-to-day, my inability to drive affects the grand total of fuck all. There are a few caveats though: Spontaneous day trips are off the cards, an hour to the coast become 3 hours for example, and I'm not carting beach shit for 3 hours on a bus/tube/train combo It's only easy because I live in large city with good public transport. I guess the one way it has changed my life is that it would be impossible for me to live anywhere smaller than a large market town.

I get the feeling my eyesight is leading me in that direction already. I'm self-employed, WFH & on much reduced hours anyway so work is fine, and I walk a lot so can still pick up food essentials / top-ups, prescriptions, etc. while out & about. My car really doesn't get a lot of use as it - my 3-weekly main shop (I'll either cadge a lift or walk down / taxi back), delivering larger print jobs (will get client to collect or pay daughter to help me deliver them), or occasional trips south for concerts or holidays... while much less convenient I'd likely again pay my daughter or take the train for these. I believe I'd cope fine, & the savings on ownership, insurance, servicing, MOT, etc. will go towards those lifestyle changes - not a huge deal in my case.

It might not be anything you did. Seizures, strokes, heart conditions, head injuries, neurological or sleep disorders can all mean you need to stop driving. A lot of those things should mean you stop cycling too but I don't think that can be legally enforced.

Wow I just realised how very likely fucked I’d be. I guess first port of call would be asking work if I can realistically do my job entirely from home without the ability to do site visits or on site surveys or collect the various data I need. Otherwise it’s gonna cost an absolute fooortune in train fares, probably requiring another set of hands to carry equipment and incredibly long days travelling, since we cover the whole of the UK, often at short notice too. Maybe if I’m lucky my office based work is good enough and valuable enough that they’d hire someone just to go and collect data for me. From a practical perspective, very little. I live 13 miles from my work, so can use public transport instead. It sucks where I live which is one of the reasons I drive to work, but doable. Yeah, I was being a dick. I've lost mine for medical reasons (cardiac arrest and seizures). I am allowed it back now, but not confident enough that I won't pop my clogs behind the wheel and kill a kid or something daft...

Cry. Then use the bus more. Get food shopping delivered. I'd have to cancel my lo's after school activities as I wouldn't be able to get them to the activity.

I've never been able to have one due to medical stuff. I can get food shopping and pretty much anything else delivered, so that's easy enough. I live within walking distance of both my GP and pharmacy as I'm always there, and walking distance to train and bus links to get anywhere else. I've had jobs in towns where the busses don't start til after I have to be at work - that meant 45 minutes walk each way. I did live in London for a while where basically no-one drives so that was easy aside from the whole cost of rent thing. I don't work anymore. My partner can drive, so if I do need to go to the dump or pick out paint colours or whatever it's not so bad. When I lived on my own, it just meant paying the council to collect my big rubbish kerbside, and the occasional taxi if I was buying something heavy or bulky in person.
