I saw an suv flip at the next light the driver is about to be at. Right were Bush meets Renner. It was about 23 years ago. I had just started driving. It scared the hell out of me. The lady that rolled quickly got out of the suv and immediately started yelling at the person who ran the light.
I posted this on a few other subs a month ago when this happened, friend said I should post this here.
This happened in Plano, at 7 AM.
Was on the way to work and heard a loud noise behind me, looked in my mirror and saw an SUV flipping over. I ended up going down to a gas station down the road, pulled the dashcam footage and ran over to help.
Lady driving the RAV4 got out by crawling through the windshield with help and I provided footage to her and the police. Not sure if she is doing okay.
I haven't had any updates since the day of the accident. I did see that my video was accessed a few times and I got an email back from an insurance agent a week ago asking if they could get the full dashcam video file.
Yeah..there's zero excuse to pull shit like this in North Texas. It's one of the easiest highway systems to miss a turn and course correct in the entire country because of all the frontage roads and u turn lanes.
Why tf was he in the right lane if he knew he was getting on the highway? There are no left side entrances in that part of town. I see people do this all the time. They ride in the right lane and then go across 3 lanes of traffic to enter the highway 🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️
> Why tf was he in the right lane if he knew he was getting on the highway? There are no left side entrances in that part of town
I think he was trying to pass the van and OP and thought he had more time than he actually did? Or just didn't realize where the on-ramp was?
I did that the other day with an exit, and got locked in by a guy who suddenly slowed down in the middle lane.
Oh well, took the next exit and came back around. If you think to yourself "am I doing something unpredictable that will surprise people around me?", and the answer is yes, you're trying to kill someone.
And well in front - not like they were obstructing anyone. And if you don’t have room, hold your horses and fucking wait - you don’t use that as an excuse to pass on the right.
I was answering why he was in the right lane, not excusing his behavior.
It looks like he was trying to pass the people in the middle and left by going to the right and ran out of room and went full stupid.
Thank you! I feel the same way: if I make a mistake I am the one to be inconvenienced, not anyone else. People like that old dude are being lazy with their car----it's not even using their personal energy, you know? SMH
People don't pay attention to where they are going anymore because of GPS, so instead of watching for signs or landmarks to know where they are going, they drone along, getting distracted until the voice tells them they have 200 ft. to merge or exit.
There’s only so much “the book” can do.
Honestly? We get a lot of shit for our “litigious” society, but shit like this is why I’m glad we have the civil courts we do. Sue the living fuck out of that asshole.
Tie this geriatric twatwaffle up in legal fees just as he approaches the season of life that requires him to have a fixed income. Justice will be served when he has no retirement to draw because his funds are now squandered on lawyer bills. Take everything, leave only sadness and regret.
The book should be that reckless driving like that gets your license suspended, car registration revoked, and the car is impounded. Make a law that dealerships can't sell to people with suspended or no licenses, and that knowingly allowing an unlicensed person to drive your car comes with registration suspension. Require at a minimum that people take actual, in-person safe and defensive driving for reckless driving or excessive speeding, and require a strict state-administered exam to get the license back. This chucklefuck could have killed someone, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's still on the roads.
The problem with traffic safety in America is we've tried nothing and act like it's not possible. Make actual punishments that hurt. If he has it, this guy's insurance will probably end up paying and he won't end up paying anything out of pocket other than repairing his own car or paying his collision deductible. If he gets sued in civil court, insurance pays, not him. After insurance is exhausted, it's rare to get saddled with anything more.
Doesn't sound like an excuse at all. Sounds like the reason he did what he did.
He straight up admitted he nearly killed someone because he didn't want to be inconvenienced by adding two minutes (at most) to his drive.
Responses like that should just lead to immediate arrest, jail time and permanent forfeiture of your license with no option for recourse.
It's so matter of fact with absolute dismissal if everyone around.
I drive all over the metro and the Plano area is next fucking level. Just dumbassery in everything from paper tag Altimas to cars that cost more than my first house.
It IS Mad Max driving here. Dallas is like the worst city to drive in the USA (Arlington and Fort Worth close behind)
https://www.dallasnews.com/news/transportation/2023/08/14/dallas-finds-itself-tied-atop-list-of-most-likely-to-get-in-car-accident-rankings/
Most people in DFW are transplants and don't really know their way around. I think the lack of situational awareness that this causes mixed with the distractions of smart phone/GPS/infotainment makes them do dumb shit like the guy in this video did.
I agree! I think GPS is the worst thing to have happened to driving. But honestly there are very few places around here where if you miss the right exit that the next one won’t get you there…. Now over in grapevine/colleyville. You miss an exit and you’re fucked
I grew up driving in the D.C. area where there were literally transplants from all over the country and the world. I've never seen the nonsense there that I've seen here. My biggest complaints would be lack of road improvement/decent road construction to begin with and lack of merge skills --- I don't think they teach merging in Driver's Ed here; it's REALLY obvious to people from other areas (where they know how to merge).
When did you grow up? Was it before smart phones and GPS? Because I learned to drive in DFW before those two things were a problem and it wasn't nearly as bad back then as it is now.
I definitely grew up before then and was driving for decades before cell phones, let alone smart phones. It doesn't sound like Driver's Ed out here now is the same quality as when you took it.
The roads are also really confusing. You'll have a 5 lane highway and each lane will take you to a different highway/different direction. Then after you take an exit there will be another set of exits to pick from immediately. That's why you see so many people who merge across 3 lanes so they don't miss their exit.
If you are familiar with the roads and know when something like that is coming, you know to get over in advance. I feel like a lot of people know their commute, but with anything more than that they get lost. But those of us who have grown up here, learned to drive here and truly know our way around are less likely to miss an exit or cause merging problems like that. I know my way around DFW well enough, that I usually just need to look at a google map once to show me where the cross streets are. When I'm in Houston or Austin, I have to use the GPS all the time.
I think the lack of law enforcement is the biggest reason. I almost never see any kind of law enforcement on the highways here, especially not on the tollways. I guess LE can say they are too busy to police the roads but how are police in other parts of the country not too busy to do this? Any time I go to the northeast, I am surprised at how many cops are out driving around.
We need [this kind](https://youtu.be/-SZZ-XtGudQ?feature=shared) of traffic enforcement here.
The only way 75 could get more Mad Max is if there were a literal disclaimer about risking your life at each on-ramp.
“By entering the Corridor of Death (aka I75) you understand that you are leaving the relative safety of a civilized world where there are rules and actions have consequences…”
I never understood that mentality of "I'm about to miss my exit so I'm going to slow down to 20 on the highway and make that your problem now". Same with idiots who get in a turn lane instead of a straight lane and then sit there with their opposite blinker on like "hey everyone, I know I'm in a turning lane but I didn't mean to be so get the fuck out of my way while I ignore traffic laws".
This is why they need to re test people after a certain number of years. They also need to get people off the road for a year for doing crap like this.
Retest for what?! This is a basic lack of mental and moral processing not motor vehicular code. Does any dmv require you to pass a question or on site exam where you have to decide to kill someone or be inconvenienced?
Not saying retesting for this scenario this is just plain stupid but they should retest in general. This guy right here just needs his license revoked plain and simple.
Even with car dependency, revoke licenses, impound cars, and make real consequences to causing a car crash. Dallas is the number one worst city in the US (tied with Atlanta) with Fort Worth and Arlington #15 and #22. We can't shrug our shoulders and do nothing because of "car dependency."
Thats like saying stealing food is wrong but because we all need to eat we shouldn't punish people for theft (I do support programs to make sure everyone has food, and I do know many people are food insecure, and need assistance that they should rightfully receive, but just because the system is wrong doesn't make individual wrongs ok either)
If you knew me personally, you’d know how big an advocate I am for urbanism and removing car focused infrastructure.
Yet, I still have qualms with eliminating licenses because it doesn’t actually stop anyone from driving, they just become unlicensed uninsured drivers. I’m open to discussion and changing my mind if there’s empirical evidence that license revocations demonstrably affects accidents or something along those lines.
By taking a license away until the person has taken appropriate training, it gives them the possibilities of more severe penalties the next time something like this happens. I'd be surprised if the guy even got a ticket for reckless driving (when I worked as an insurance adjuster, I was surprised how many police reports I got where the at fault party was very clear to the officer yet no tickets were issued).
Ultimately, unless there are consequences to this behavior, then it will continue and it will be more common. Right now there are no real consequences, and Dallas has the grizzly distinction of having the worst crash rate in the nation, and that won't change unless we get serious about enforcing penalties for this behavior. https://www.dallasnews.com/news/transportation/2023/08/14/dallas-finds-itself-tied-atop-list-of-most-likely-to-get-in-car-accident-rankings/
I'm very much in support in throwing the book at someone because idiots like this guy end up killing people. I don't think monetary penalties are the solution, but rather ones that are action based. I think if you have your license suspended over something like this, you should be able to get it back once you've completed a driver's Ed course (with instructor driving) with an emphasis on safe and calm driving (mostly because I think flat 3 year suspension type rules do encourage people to drive uninsured and unlicensed)
Ultimately, punishments should be such that a person feels the consequences when they engage in behavior that can cause serious injuries and death. While this guy didn't kill anyone, I'd be incredibly surprised if that woman didn't have serious and long term injuries.
Yes, we need to improve our infrastructure for non based car travel, but that doesn't mean not enforcing penalties for reckless driving
We are on the same page, trust me. Just different in our approach to a very agreed upon problem.
I wonder what your thoughts on criminal charges for this severity of accident would be? It feels like, only by car, can we harm people and properly so grossly without major criminal penalty. That feels like it might actually change people’s tunes and be enforceable. A revoked license is just a piece of plastic at the end of the day, it doesn’t stop anyone.
Court mandated and enforced driver safety training programs I think are the best solution. These would be very involved, with in-person classrooms and in-person driving time with an instructor for like 6 months or something with a minimum of 80 hours of in-person time (same for DWIs, in Texas DWI courses are 12 hours and can be taken online). During that time maybe people could have provisional licenses strictly for work, groceries, and childcare if absolutely needed with GPS trackers on their vehicles. Any other reckless activities behind the wheel results in jail, or being caught operating a vehicle that isn't designated for a provisional license
Basically the punishments for reckless driving should be heavily reform based to prevent repeat offenses. The punishments should also be similar to drunk driving (though drunk driving punishments also need to be more focused on reform, not just punishment)
Driving is a privilege, not a right, and if anyone demonstrates the behavior exhibited in this video, their privilege is trumped by everyone else's right to safety.
It doesn't seem like his ability to control the car was the issue. What test is going to screen out someone who is inconsiderate and stupid enough to slow down from 45 to 20 and then swerve across two lanes of traffic to nearly hit the barrier of the on-ramp even if there *wasn't* a car in the middle of his path?
Do more lessons reduce the chance someone is an inconsiderate asshole? Seems like "don't slam on your brakes and swerve across 2+ lanes of traffic" is not something that needs to be taught.
It cant be just me but over the past 20-25 years every car, SUV, truck, everything seams so prone to roll over. Its not just high speed crashes but everything. I worked in a body shop for 22 years and its nuts to see how many roll overs there are. Bump a curb, turn a little to hard, get taped on a corner........
Friend this past weekend had a minor rear end hit. Truck slid sideways and rolled 4 times doing 45.......... its gust nuts.
You are already likely ahead of 70% of drivers by having a front dashcam.
In Asia, almost every car has a dashcam in it. Some even require one by law. It's crazy to think here (in the US) that people are surprised that I even choose to have a camera recording my driving. I've caught so many accidents and moments, especially with the crazy drivers in DFW.
I don't mind missing an on-ramp, especially ones that are run by NTTA. They take enough of my money already--I'll take the next one that is literally less than a mile down the road.
Do you have a video of that white van from the side or back???? That van and lettering location and colors looks exactly like one that ran me off the road a few weeks back and then drove off. $4500 in damages. The decal on the side and back is something like a wheelchair repair service.
Ok, thank you though. Dallas and Glenn Heights are looking for him. I got it on dash cam and the cop that watched it messed up and when he went to rewind it to get it on his phone, accidently hit delete.
bet that dude got out of his car and acted like it was the fault of the car that rolled over 10 times
"wtf! didn't you see me recklessly driving? this is your fault!"
holy cow...this person was changing 2 lanes at the last second to exit...risking everyone's life...hope the lady is okay. this is scary. cars are getting safer but people are getting more stupid....you were so helpful 👍
Nah it’s both. Folks are definitely getting more stupid and distracted….add more cars and bam, worse driving era ever lol (outside of maybe the 1920s-50s)
Phones exist in the rest of the world, but the rapid rise in traffic injuries and deaths is localized primarily to America. If its just the phones how come Europe isn't seeing a similar rise in wrecks?
I don’t really notice that many people on their phones. What I mostly see is a lot of people driving like bats out of hell. Even through school zones you’ll see some nutjob flying through, like they’re pissed that some are actually going the speed limit. We need a return of far more speed enforcement.
I'm sure they're point is that the more cars there are on the road the more accidents there will be. We also see more accidents now because of social media
What does that have to do with rational decision making and being a good defensive driver?? Regardless of how many cars are on the road, you should never just yeet over several lanes without looking just to get on the highway. That’s what a stupid person does. A person with any shred of intelligence would check the other lanes first, see there is a car, and take the fucking L by getting on at the next entrance and be ~5 minutes late to their destination.
I have honestly noticed how much worse drivers are since I started driving. It's 98% just phones being used. I remember when I was 16, no one had smart phones and everyone was just vibing to music but mostly paying attention. Now it is very much not the case. If you go to a junkyard, notice how nearly every car there is a rear end or front end damage because it's all from people not paying attention and not stopping.
Holy crap, imagine being the idiot who passes a van on the right in the service road, only to realize you ***needed*** to merge left to get in the highway, so you have to slow down and maneuver behind the van you just passed and swing over 3 lanes, but surprise there’s a RAV4 in the way from your truly greatest ambitions!
I'm pretty happy with it. Haven't had any issues and it records front and back no problems. If you want to see pictures of fitment and how it looks from inside/outside, I can send you some. It's not bulky at all like other dashcams and kind of has a more "Lowkey" look to it.
I don't use the app at all but you can get footage off of it with the app since it has wifi. Quality is also surprisingly good, it's a lot better than what it looks like in the post. (Front is 1440p/30 while rear is 1080p/30). It supports 60fps on 1440p for front and 1080p/30 for rear, but Id rather have more storage for footage.
>how it looks from inside
I'm not you (or am I...), but I have the same cam and took a few photos when I was making a how-to for a mounting solution that didn't involve sticking anything to any windshields. The pics don't accurately represent how small it is, I can't see the front cam from my normal driving position
https://imgur.com/a/0PFBpt0
> Id rather have more storage for footage.
Do you vlog? Just curious why you'd trade potential additional video quality for the ability to store more footage. I've only got a 128GB card in mine and can already store several hours at max quality
That part was actually pretty easy for me, my car is 7 months from being old enough enough to drink so is lacking in safety features (read: side airbags) that would've made things a bit more annoying. I ended up only having to remove the A-pillar trim to hide the wiring to the fuse box. All other wiring I just tucked into the weatherstripping between the headliner and frame
I have the same thing, it's pretty much impossible to see from where I'm sitting. It blends in very well and the size is sooo small lol.
I have the cam recording 24/7 as it's hardwired in my car. So id rather have the ability to have it store more footage since it's always recording and I may miss out on something that I wish I would have saved. (ie. I notice a dent in my car and I have to go through footage to find out what happened but it could have been overwritten). I'm a little paranoid about stuff like this so I may just be crazy haha
I have this exact same setup. The rear cam died after maybe 1-1.5yrs. Was not covered by warranty. The front cam has been good (basically on 24/7) for almost 4 years now.
The classic 3-4 lane fly over to catch a ramp. It blows me away people can’t just catch the next one and instead put other peoples lives at risk. Take the time and save yourself money and pain
I never understood why you'd do this. I just go to my next exit and turn around. Sometimes, it leads me down a path I'd never thought of before or you find a new store/restaurant on accident. Getting lost can be fantastic.
It takes 2 seconds to analyze this is always a bad idea:
You stop in a fast road, cars from behind hit you
You manage to avoid that and look to switch to left lane
You check cars are not coming but any car can show up in like 2 seconds because it’s a fast road and you are slowing down, you manage to avoid that great now do it again.
Except this time you are looking behind still, behind to the left and now another behind to the left.
You manage all that great, you have to look behind and to the left one more time because of the ramp you are trying to get to, and other cars who are also coming fast to the ramp.
While doing all this you also have to speed up because the ramp is to speed up and if that concept doesn’t land I’d be happy to come over and revoke your license since you don’t know the basics of driving. In addition another car who knows ramps will get you from behind.
People can barely parallel park, but have the guts to try this in an 80+ MPH road.
I learned recently that it’s really important to get your windshield replaced by reputable companies for just this reason. The windshield is a major factor in your roof not collapsing during a rollover.
I get so much anxiety about missing my exit that I move over to the correct lane about 1.5 miles before my exit. I honestly don't understand the last second merging either.
I've got a motorcycle and shit like this is why I don't go on the highways with the motorcycle - the fool would have killed me. Hell, I don't like getting on the highway in my Outback.
Not true. If both parties are out of sorts or incapacitated, who calls 911? Who gives the statement to the LEO?
There are many reasons to stop if you were witness to a bad accident.
I’ve never seen a collection of terrible and downright dangerous in any city in my life.
Take LA for example, they drive very fast but they’re predictable and stay on their fast lanes. There’s no rhyme or reason on Dallas reason, people just flying in and out of lanes. One guy doing 30MPH and another 90MPH. I’m now anxious of any space. Esteem me and the car next lane over, it’s prime real estate in Dallas roads and invitation to swerve into.
By the looks of it he would have barely made the ramp, if not clipped the curve even if the Rav4 wasn't there. So many drivers out here with ZERO awareness.
I got footage of a pretty bad wreck on 35 in lewisville last month and I stopped to give the footage. After getting asked like 5 times to make sure I was okay(wasn’t involved at all), everyone was really appreciative that I stopped to give the footage.
Reminds me that I need to get some cards made to hand out(just in case I forget to email someone and they need to send me a reminder) and maybe a notebook and pen to take down emails of people that want the footage.
I tell my wife all the time that bad drivers will almost never miss their exit. Today on I-20,she finally understands what I mean. Car went across 4 lanes to try and make an exit in about 100ft going 70 mph. They almost took out a car on their way, but they still made their exit.
