Berkey Fluoride Filters

Just something for everyone to be aware of…
I bought a brand new Berkey filter with new black filters and fluoride filters at the beginning of July. This was my first time adding fluoride filters onto a Berkey system but I’ve had a Berkey for years with no issues. Roughly a week after starting to drink the filtered water I started having weird symptoms in my mouth (extreme dryness, burning tongue, tingling on the roof of my mouth). As the weeks went on that progressed into my tongue swelling at random times, swollen taste buds, ulcers on the insides of my cheeks and my tongue was permanently pale in color. As it got into August, I started to experience dizziness, blurred vision, muscle weakness, loss of appetite (I ended up losing 20 pounds in 6 weeks), tingling in my left arm and extreme anxiety and panic at all times of the day. All of the symptoms in my mouth were still happening as well. I saw my doctor 4 times in that 6 week period and all of my blood work always came back fine with the exception of elevated red blood cells and platelets. My husband finally mentioned that the only thing we had done differently was the fluoride filter so I checked the Berkey and found a coating of white dust on the bottom of the basin as well as white flecks floating in the water. I did a quick Google search and found all the blogs about aluminum leaching into the water. My doctor ordered a heavy metal hair sample test and I submitted the fluoride filtered water to a water testing lab and both came back with high levels of aluminum.
I started drinking the water on July 9th, symptoms appeared on July 17th. Symptoms progressed over 5 weeks until I stopped drinking the water on August 20th and virtually all symptoms disappeared within 3 days of switching to a new water. However, I now have new health issues that I am still dealing with (oral thrush, swollen tonsils and lymph nodes, muscle cramping, anxiety and panic) and my doctor thinks it will take a few months for my nervous system and immune system to recover as heavy metals are hard to detox from.
Berkey accepts no responsibility for what I’ve been through the last 2 months because according to them, the activated alumina in their filters doesn’t cause health issues. My test results show different. I would caution everyone to pay attention to the water coming out of your fluoride filters if you use them and if you suddenly have any weird health issues, get your water tested!

I know this thread is old but just came upon it and wanted to post in case I can help anyone searching for their same symptoms. I have been using original Berkey with 2 black filters for about a year and a half (I did not have the flouride filters). The past 5 months I have been having really weird mouth and throat symptoms (red, raw roof of mouth, metallic taste, tongue looked off color, sandpaper/gritty feeling on tongue and in back of throat, inflammation of tongue on the sides, swollen taste buds). I would randomly wake up and it would feel like I burned my mouth on a cup of coffee- which I don’t drink. Went to 3 different doctors who were all a bit puzzled and put me on different reflux, oral thrush and histamine meds trying to treat the symptoms. Well, one day I decided to do the red dye test on my Berkey and it failed miserably (water all red). I went to order new filters and lo and behold, while waiting for the new ones to come in, I stopped drinking the Berkey water and my symptoms disappeared 24 hours later!!! I couldn’t freakin believe it. So off to google and reddit I went and then looked up all the EPA drama. I am wondering if I was reacting to the silver in the filter or another metal (I was always sensitive to silver as a child when wearing earrings so I may be allergic to it).
I am currently researching trying to figure out what water system to switch to. What is everyone using now?
CristianoRonaldoSi@reddit
Hey i am on your same boat. Been using my berkey for 3 years without the fluoride filters but saw that people recommend the duolton filter. Thanks
cindysees@reddit
I know this is old but what the heck.. I’ve been using Berkey for about six months but lately I notice light headiness and sore through and gums bleed.. odd.. has anyone notice any similarities? I’ll stop bringing the water and see if the dizziness stops. I plan to get doc to check for metals in my body

Hi all,
I have been using a Berkey water system since 2016 and trust their claims about how they filter the water. But as I got older, I began to question many things in my life. So I decided to test this system, not when it was new, but after I had used it for 11 months or about 250 Berkey Travel refills.
And you know what, my intuition was right.
Three markers were really high: chloroform 1.42 ppb, fluoride 5.26 ppm, total TMG 1.42 ppb.
I had a very unpleasant experience with customer support. I guess this is not the first time they have received such information from their clients. I live in New York and they want to check my top water results and it's really weird. When I asked what water source they use to test their filters, they were unable to provide this information.
They claim that their black filters last 3000 gallons or two years and come with a two year warranty, but the tricky part is that PF2 (fluoride filters) last 10-12 months or 1000 gallons, but the warranty is only six months.
I would not be surprised if my topwater test will show lower Fluorides level. with means its no longer working as filter, and start to release stored fluorides into filtered water. (this is a conspiracy theory so far)
Let me know what you think
Copernicus1234@reddit
Any update on this?
In2d__p@reddit
Hey I use aqua true filter now. Berkey is a scam
Copernicus1234@reddit
Don’t think they do anything at all or just not as well as they claim?
In2d__p@reddit
Berkey definitely doesn't do what they claim. but Aqua True does. I spend $200 on each test to confirm that
Final_Meat@reddit
damn this is pretty alarming. i am really sorry for your experience, heavy metals are no joke + really hard to detox from the body.
i just posted about my experience with the fluoride filters with the TDS meter here
i’m still concerned that anything was “added to the water” after many cycles of filtration even if the PPM has gone down esp after reading this :(

I should also mention, I have a documented allergy to metal. I’ve had it since I was a kid and I would get really bad rashes any time I wore fake silver or nickel. So I think that’s possibly why my reaction was so strong. I have also switched to a Clearly Filtered water filtration pitcher and it’s amazing!
Mediocre_Annual4363@reddit
Does it bother you that the Clearly Filtered pitchers are made of plastic? I was hoping they would have a glass or metal pitcher option since plastics are full of issues, even if they’re labeled BPA free. Seems silly to filter contaminants from the water just to store the filtered water in plastic? Or am I missing something?

Mike Adams has thoroughly tested several filters in his lab. The results are available here ( including Berkey). If you listen to the interview he tells you how to determine if you have counterfeit Berkey filters.

I’ll watch this for sure. I ordered mine directly from USA Berkey Filters and it all seemed legit but I’ll have to investigate a little more.
Urantian6250@reddit
I personally use Pro-One but happened to hear the interview yesterday. Mike Adams is a little whack sometimes but not when it comes to food and water testing. His lab is certified and he’s not going to risk his reputation to stump for something he hasn’t thoroughly tested.

I now have a Doulton filter.
12ealdeal@reddit
Can you recommend which Doulton filter? They are in Canada right? You order from their site?
CyclingDutchie@reddit
I use the Berkefeld Ultra Sterasyl filters. But if your state uses fluoride, you could go for those filters.
Im in europe, so i dont know where to order in Canada.
desperate4carbs@reddit
Good move. I now use my Berkey (with genuine Berkey black filters) as a pre-filter for my Zero Water system. Will replace the Berkey filters with Doulton when they're no longer usable.
CyclingDutchie@reddit
Good thinking.
I was really impressed by the doulton filters. First, it takes a while for the water to flow through it. which feels like they are actually doing their job to filter your water. Second I was really impressed with the taste. Much better than from my Berkey filters.
Team_TapScore@reddit
Do you have the lab reports available to share?
Not questioning the results. We've seen similar situations with Berkey elements through the tests run through our services. (We're not a lab, but have labs test for our customers.)
Here's one of the official tests:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVZmZwTxnMc
And here are the reports from that video:
*City Water*
Pre-filtration report: https://gosimplelab.com/SYHHVW/all-results
Post-filtration report: https://gosimplelab.com/G3ZCCX/all-results
In this test the unfiltered water had no aluminum, whereas the post-filtered water shows 1.44 PPM of aluminum.
*Pond Water*

Post-filtration report: https://gosimplelab.com/F7NwtU5Ef4
In this test the aluminium remained the same before and after.
RichardActon@reddit
ClearlyFiltered claims to have relatively cleaner output than Berkey
2tusks@reddit
Is this from your own personal tests?
Team_TapScore@reddit
These tests were run in a laboratory and not by me, but we at Tap Score helped provide access to that lab thanks to our test kits.
I don't know which lab off hand since there's nearly 200 different ones. But it'd be a certified laboratory in the area where Brian (in the video) lives since we match our users to the nearest local lab that can run the necessary test panels.
So:
Tap Score provides the sampling kit (containers and instructions and shipping label), Brian (or any other customer) samples the water and ships that sample to the lab, then the lab tests the water and reports the results.
Does that make sense? Probably a bit of an overkill for an answer. :-)
missusJS@reddit (OP)
I will upload my results, but the post-filtration score for aluminum was 0.8 and was the only health risk detected.
theyreplayingyou@reddit
Forgot these POS, get a quality RO (or RODI + remineralization cartridge) and you wont have to worry.
ferally_domestic@reddit
See u/RealBunkerJohn ‘s stance on Berkey.
The topic might merit a place in wiki.
Urantian6250@reddit
Listened to an interview of the Berkey CEO yesterday. He said on Amazon counterfeit filters are rampant. Without the silver impregnation the filters grow bacteria and can actually end up putting more bacteria in the water than the original source water.
I’ll link interview in next comment in case Reddit has a ban on the site.
