Smart bulbs, plugs, locks etc. Do you bother with them at home?

My new house build got delayed by 18 months thanks to COVID so I had A LOT of time to research and plan all the smart home crap I would set up. I subscribed to so many Youtube channels dedicated to smart homes. When we finally moved in, I did end up setting up some smart devices, but definitely not to the level I had originally hoped to and to be honest there's only a couple of smart things I think we really could use. Home WiFi (eero mesh network) - Probably my most expensive and most vital suite of devices. our home is extremely well insulated to the point that we get bugger all mobile signal inside the house and a standard ISP router barely reaches the kitchen, let alone the upstairs and the basement. I splashed out for the eero mesh network which allows seamless connectivity between nodes and a lot of additional functionality which I don't use. Security - Eufy doorbell, a contact sensor and a wireless external camera for the side gate. I would have gotten at least 1 more external camera for the other side of the house but Eufy uses it's own wireless network (presumably for secure connection) which is not very strong. The external camera is just on the other side of the external wall from the Eufy hub and even that only gets a couple of bar connection strength. In any case, the doorbell is great since it sets off a notification on our phones so we could be anywhere and as long as we have some internet connectivity we will know and can even see and talk to the person. Best thing about Eufy is it stores videos locally on the hub and the only limit is the memory capacity of the hub. No subscriptions. Switchbot - rather than spending £30+ for each smart bulb and possibly having issues with signal strength again, I tried out some switchbots to control the external light switches. I have 3 switch actuators (little box with a little arm that you stick next to a switch), a hub and a contact sensor. The contact sensor was crap and basically kept disconnecting from the hub, so I replaced that with the Eufy one which is much much more reliable. The hub works as an IR emitter as well (like a TV remote) so I can use voice command with my Google Home to turn the TV and soundbar on and off. The switch actuators were kind of disappointing. They seem to burn through batteries and maybe my light switches are too "stiff" but they do struggle to consistently trigger the switches. I originally wanted to integrate them with motion sensors, but because they are so unreliable I've basically stopped using them and haven't bothered expanding it. Philips Hue (smart lighting) - had a few bulbs from the old house including some motion sensors. These have been generally very reliable and I've got auto on / off and night light dimming for the stairs / landing and the front porch. They are expensive though and they aren't very bright. Govee LED light strip - needed some way of lighting up the alcove under the stairs in the basement. I just use the button controller to turn it on and off, but it does have smart features and integration of which I don't use any. Google Home speakers - kind of went overboard with these... I think we have 5 in total - 2 minis, 2 Nests and 1 of the big ones which they discontinued. Honestly, the Nest and the big one are superb speakers and we use the Nest pair in the kitchen all the time to play tunes and set timers for cooking. Even my little daughters know how to tell Google to sing a song. The smart functionality is somewhat basic and not as customisable as I'd like, but I have programmed in some custom commands like being able to turn on the TV and soundbar together. Amazon Echo (the big round ball one) - got one of these as it was on sale and I wanted to play around with the Zigbee compatibility with the Switchbot devices. For voice commands the Echo is noticeably more responsive than the Google Home devices and Amazon's smart home app Alexa has waaaay more functionality and customisability than Google Home. The only thing it fails on is sound quality of the speaker which is so mushy and lacks clarity to the point where I sometimes can't understand what Alexa is saying. Again I haven't really looked at the Alexa functions since I set everything up. I recently got a new phone and I literally just realised I hadn't installed the Alexa app on my phone...
