I read a lot of comments on how close the boats are. While get the idea of giving them space it looks to me like the boats are stoped. There not moving and the whales are just there .I if they made laws telling people they could not have there ships and boats any ware near them . There would be no ships and or boats on the waters at all any ware . I don’t want to cause any one trouble but there whales can be any ware at any time . So maybe instead of saying they shouldn’t be there or they took there boats right up to them . Maybe every one should be saying or asking if these boats are licensed to do this . I’m shire there’s permits to be had for this .

Woah!! So jealous you were able to witness them bubble net feeding at close range (#2 on my bucket list). Pretty wild how highly socialized they appear. Humpbacks sure are special.
learawhitewolf@reddit
Now we need wild animal watching distance and laws. Boat props cut whales. While their loud engines make it difficult for whales to communicate. They aren’t able to hunt as effectively or watch their children. Making humpbacks an easier target for orcas. Humpbacks also only eat in the polls and fast on their 8 month journey going north or south. Insane amount of trucks on the Serengeti mute cheetah calls to their young and bring in other unwanted predators too.

Amazing experience!

Amazing! I was on Cape Cod last month and wish we’d had a chance to do this.
baaaaarkly@reddit
Wow it's like illegal in Australia to get within 100m, y'all Americans just drive right up on top of them eh
KillionMatriarch@reddit
On Cape Cod we also follow strict whale protocols. The whale watching boats never drive up on them but the whales approach the boats all the time. Sit and wait - if you’re lucky they’ll come right up to you. They go where the fish go. The Hyannis whale watch boat is jet propulsion (no propellors) to be extra safe.
Happy-Bananas-1738@reddit (OP)
Exactly, engine was cut off for some time and they swam right up to us. Captain has been whaling for over 40 years. I doubt he (and the other captains) would do anything to endanger the whales
KillionMatriarch@reddit
Yep. These captains are very experienced and highly respectful of the whales. It’s the recreational boats that are dangerous. Spell, a humpback, was struck by one of these boats on July 4. You could see the gouges on the stock of her tail. She’s doing ok. Entanglement is the other great danger. We’ve had 2 calves suffer that this summer. It’s hard not to become attached to these magnificent animals. Glad you had some an amazing experience. Hope you’ll come back!

It’s illegal in Hawaii and on the West Coast of the U.S it probably is on the East Coast too. But, that isn’t enough of a deterrent for some charters.
Those whales have at least 2 boats way, -way- to close.

Could they just eat a bird if they wanted to?
KillionMatriarch@reddit
They do not want to eat the birds. Anywhere from 1 to 2 tons of small fish every day - but not birds. The throat of a humpback is actually pretty small considering its overall size.
Harleye@reddit
Wow, they're stunning and it's as if the whales find the people and boats as interesting as we find them. I wonder if the whales get together and decide to go "human watching."
KillionMatriarch@reddit
Definitely curious creatures.
MissHibernia@reddit
One whale says to another: every time those people show up they bring all those (bad word) seagulls with them!
midoriable_@reddit
whoa, those boats are hella close while they are just tryna eat
Junior-Profession726@reddit
This is absolutely amazing !! What beautiful creatures !!
williamtrausch@reddit
See what a whale killing ban does? It brings the whales back, add protections for seals and sea lions, it brings them back, populations can indeed rebound. Restoring and protecting the environment works to enrich us and everything. But remember this is no accident, took years of effort and strong intervention. Commercials interests are just waiting and advocating for loosing protections, as they are for clean water and clean air.
