A 1969 Omega Apollo 13 Speedmaster watch. My wife offered to buy me one for my 40th birthday but I told her I would feel uncomfortable with her spending so much on a thing that only told the time when my trusty casio does exactly the same thing. I have more accurate radio controlled atomic clocks around the house and in my study that can tell me the exact time to 0.000000000000000000001%

You don’t buy a watch for time accuracy, you buy one because it’s men’s jewelry. When you think of it that way it’s much easier to justify…and does a whole lot more than a 3 carat diamond plopped in a setting!

I buy a watch to tell the time, jewellery is for the ostentatious person. I could appreciate the precision, quality of workmanship of manufacture and operation but wouldn’t wear it for pose value.
View on Reddit #9276556

Speedbird223@reddit

I guess maybe my point wasn’t clear. If you consider what ladies jewelery can cost the male equivalent can just be a nice watch. I collect Breitlings because I love the design of them and like you can appreciate the workmanship. if I wanted flashy and ostentatious I’d get the cheapest gold Rolex. Despite Breitling’s best marketing efforts they are still not massively recognizable and even less so when I started getting into them 20+ yrs ago.
View on Reddit #9285701

DavenportPointer@reddit

I know Breitlings, very famous in the world of pilots which I’m guessing you might be by your username. I actually have a watch with a small piece of Concorde 001 installed on the dial. I forget the make of it, but that’s the watch I will wear if I ever go to a formal event. It’s not flashy at all in fact it’s really plain (no pun intended) looking. We all collect different things. My bag is iconic rifles like M1 Garand, Lee Enfield 4T, Winchester Model 70, M1 Carbine, Kar98, Moisin nagant. I fire them on occasion. My other hobbies include tearing money up in the shower (I own a yacht), vintage cars, plus lots of other stuff I should probably not have got into like outdoor pursuits. My casio comes with me every time.

First class flights somewhere nice. I’ve done business with work, but never the real thing, and while in theory I could buy some I never would. Having said that I’d have to be given them by someone outside my family, I’d be furious if they spent that kind of money on me. Men ☕️

Usually incrementally better slightly in every respect. To compare BA Club World to First for example… -Check-in has its own private security lane at Heathrow that leads directly into the lounges (you do need to walk through one lounge to get to the true first class lounge) -Concorde Room (BA’s lounge for First passengers) has true sit down dining with waiter service and a full staffed bar as opposed to self service. Not all outstations have the same amenties as Heathrow but some airports do have dedicated First Class lounges still -Boarding in the first group -Seat a little bigger in length and width (this has narrowed in recent years as Club World seats were introduced in 2019) -Better crew to passenger ratio and less toilets per passenger (especially now that First is only 8 seats on almost all aircraft, used to be between 12 and 17 depending upon the aircraft) -Dine on demand, and IME usually as much as you want within what is catered (BA doesn’t over cater First as much as they did 10yrs ago) -Premium champagne and wine, such as Laurent Perrier Grand Siecle, Johnnie Walker Blue Label -Better standard of food, although this is slightly subjective… -For arrivals into Heathrow where you can use the Arrivals Lounge there is a small breakfast room for First passengers with waiter service, plus you have the option to use a bath instead of a shower in the arrivals lounge (though the staff usually dissuade you because it takes a long time to run it, I.e. they don’t want to clean it) -More BA Avios earned and more points towards earning/maintaining status

So in other words, not worth the extortionate price and is mainly aimed towards people that are so stinky rich that money's no object.
View on Reddit #9238489

Speedbird223@reddit

Well, it all boils down to cost and perceived value. I personally don’t like traveling in economy or premium economy and do value the perks of business and first class. I travel a decent amount (on my own dime, for what it’s worth) and have flown BA First and business class countless times so when booking a BA ticket I’ll look at the cost of both and decide where my preference falls. On some occasions it only been another $500 each way to do First over Business Class, on others it’s been $5000 so I’ll slum it in second class and keep an eye out for the ability to upgrade with Avios (BA’s version of frequent flyer miles). On some occasions first class can be very good value. About 10yrs ago my wife and I took a round the world trip over 4 months and we were able to book a round the world first class ticket. It included 13 longhaul first class flights and 5 shorthaul business class flights for $13,000 each. Bearing in mind I have paid $6000 roundtrip in business class from New York to London and back that’s very good value, indeed. Sure, it’s not for everyone, it’s why some airlines only have 4 first class seats (or even none!) but it’s something I personally enjoy and value.
View on Reddit #9239441

sgst@reddit

> only been another $500 each way to do First over Business Class That's still an insane amount of money to most people. We try to do most of our holidays for about £500 for the both of us - that's flights and accommodation. You're spending the total cost of most of our holidays on just the upgrade to first, both ways. The other poster was right, first is for people who have enough money that the upgrade cost is inconsequential. Because there's no way 99% of people would look at that and consider it good value, or even be able to afford it in the first place.
View on Reddit #9263493

masterflex11@reddit

Understandably, BA tend to rate low in terms of their First Class offering compared to some airlines. In fact, I read an article not too long ago that placed BA as one of the poorest performing airlines. That probably explains why the jump from business to first isn't that much compared to others. In the grand scheme of things however I don't think anything you've mentioned above is good value. Economy might not be entirely comfortable, but the plane is still going to get you to your destination, along with everyone else. Of course, everyone is entitled to preference, but I'm not paying thosuands above the cost of a standard ticket just for the privilege (I'm also financially comfortable btw). When I flew with Emirates to Sydney, the cost of a one way, first class ticket from Manchester was £18k. You may get access to fine dining, more space, a bed, a shower, but at the rate of £900/hour? Hell no. I don't think I'd even pay that if I was worth a lot more.
View on Reddit #9240021

Speedbird223@reddit

I’d say BA are very much middle of the road in FC. I’ve flown some airlines that are much worse in FC, and there are others I’d pick everyday over them. They’ve not been world class since the (early) 2000s but are still the best option on many of my routes and in their day can offer an exceptional experience, IME, of nearly 20yrs as a BA Gold cardholder. It’s all well and good tooting Emirates horn but they’re not much use if you want to fly from the US to London. Regardless the opinion of choosing First Class over Business or Economy is obvious. There’s hundreds more seats in the cheap section because that’s where most people would rather fly. I’m aware my opinion is a minority one.
View on Reddit #9241919

EconomyFreakDust@reddit

Yes. My grandparents always fly by business class, and have flown first using points, but have never paid for it. They can obviously afford it, but there isn't enough of a difference for the additional cost to be worth it.

You may change your mind once it’s on your wrist. Go to an authorized dealer for the brand you want and explain your situation. They may be very understanding…I collect Breitlings and wanted to buy my father one for a gift but knew that there was a good chance he wouldn’t accept it unless he had it in hand. I explained to the AD I’d bought a few of mine from and they said I could bring it back for a full refund within 30 days as long as it was in same condition and still had a certain sticker on the underside. My father still didn’t accept it when it was in hand so I took it back.
