Skills matter more than things.
How many guns you have doesn't matter if you can't shoot. How much food you have doesn't matter if you can't cook. How big your first aid kit is doesn't matter if you don't know how to use it.
Get the skills first.

Best way to prep for a disaster.... Go to your breaker box/fuse box in your house and kill the main power for 2 or 3 days. You'll figure out pretty fast what you need to keep you, your family, and your household running.

I tell the story of my friend who sold a house for a profit and was going to buy an RV, but instead her husband bought life insurance. They made one payment before he died in an industrial accident at work. Take care of your insurance, take care of your taxes, take care of your teeth, use protection in your car and your bedroom, don’t take drugs you aren’t meant to take and take the ones you ought to; lock your guns and your house, stay in school, keep your nose clean, learn from others’ mistakes. It is easier to survive [insert your favorite apocalypse here] when you have health insurance and a roof over your head.

Organize information so that it is available at your fingertips BEFORE the adverse event. Keep binders with most of what you need to know in a crisis at your fingertips.
Example: I labelled my lithium batteries with their Ah ratings, Watt-hour ratings and the devices they power with how much current they draw. That way, there's little guessing when SHTF.
Test, test, test every device that has even the simplest mechanical or electronic/electrical operation. Familiarize yourself with it BEFORE the adverse event.
Don't rely on the Internet to be up in a crisis, and don't assume your computerized gadgets will work (not least because you may not have electricity).
Know where you've stored every prepping item, so you can find it easily. Some people keep paper lists of where everything is.
Keep a contacts list for people you might need to reach, and I don't mean an electronic one on your phone. Paper.
