I had to take a plea deal or spend a while in jail. I'm still trying to find more proof that it wasn't me who drove. Thankfully being a hot shot isn't that bad and they aren't as angry over me having fireball in the truck. I still only drink it when I'm doing a long restart.

No shit! I drove through some "closed to thru traffic" construction on some back roads once. No problem, because I wasn't going through, I was delivering right in that area. But the road I had to turn on was truck restricted. I immediately pulled over and called the cops. That's what you do when route planning doesn't work out. Thing is, "route planning" for most these days is punching an address into Google Maps, putting the truck in "D", and ripping someone's fender mirror off at 35mph on their way out of the Peelot.
View on Reddit #9181437

Incendium_Satus@reddit

Hell no. Google Maps useless in rural Australia. Just because the local council zoned a strip of land for a road 200 years ago doesn't mean they actually built it.
View on Reddit #9462384

Glabstaxks@reddit

What do the cops do ? Help back you out ?
View on Reddit #9228259

TheFirstCrew@reddit

No, they gave me authorization to be on that road, and told me the best road to pick up next. Basically, it's CYA. Now I don't have to worry about a ticket, or making a bad situation even worse by getting in even more of a bind. If they didn't want me going down that road, they could come spot me, because that's easier for them than mountains of paperwork when something get torn up by a truck. Boils down to communication.

I check routes with Google maps a lot, actually. I can tell from the satellite view if a certain turn into a shipper is a truck entrance or not, allowing me to plan for it. City to city is easy, inner city I can use street view to check truck routes or Google the actual truck route map. Some guys just throw on their A => B shit and end up like what you see here.
View on Reddit #9212273

TheFirstCrew@reddit

Oh yeah, I used the shit out of Google Maps. But as an interface. I route planned with the atlas, and made the route in Google Maps. More to it than that, but you get the idea.
View on Reddit #9212517

Redditmarcus@reddit

While Googley Maps is a vital tool to utilize, anyone using *only* that to plan their route in a semi truck will eventually end up in a situation like this. Inevitably. Use a truck-specific GPS navigation device instead *AND* Googley Maps to view your destination on Satellite View.
View on Reddit #9211612

BigRigPirateBooty@reddit

Haha I do agree with that last part. I had a delivery years ago in a small town in NC. Checked map and google. Got to a turn that didn’t look right. Pulled over and checked it all again. Ended up on a similar road as pictured , that I was able to barely get out of. When I finally made it to the shipper with branches still hanging off the trailer , the guy says oh you ended up on such and such road. Yeah they changed all the signs in town, blocked the road halfway through and it hadn’t been updated on any maps or google yet. Said it happened every day and they didn’t put any signs up to warn drivers. Obviously no warnings in shipper instructions either.

I used to haul powdered cement. There were a couple mixer plants off the beaton path, in the middle of nowhere. A couple times I thought I was going to end up in a situation like this. Pulling 85k lbs of powder down an unmarked, not on the GPS, no cell service, dirt path in the middle nowhere, going simply off directions spoken to me by my dispatch. Luckily I made it but I easily could have ended up like this.
View on Reddit #9208114

When I was a new driver, before people had GPS, I had to go to a portable plant at a job site down in a borrow pit in the middle of acres of citrus groves. The directions were “turn left on dirt road, turn right on dirt lane.”

Weird, since I operate a tracked skiddie (T190, T595, or mainly T770) pretty much every single workday — jackhammer, forks, sweeper, backfilling, stumpgrinding, and tons and tons of grading — and Bobcats beat the others in nearly every way (and we work them hard.) We’ve rented Kubotas, Takeuchis, and Caterpillars, and they all suck in one way or another. Some combination of lack of visibility, cumbersome, unresponsive, lack of power, maintenance issues — but Bobcat has been by far the best. Plus their selection of attachments is much better and so is their service/dealer in our area (SW Michigan.) That’s real world experience for over 15 years now.

Had this almost happen to me in Missouri just last month.(OTR with allied moving for context) I was using the hammer truck gps app and the road it took me on to leave the customers house was a decent paved road at first then turned into a windy dirt road much like this one. I should have known then to just back up but the route looked good on the app. I went for about a quarter mile until I came to a creek that had 2 concrete slabs with water running over them as a bridge. So of course I had to back up for about a half mile through a windy back road with trees everywhere until I got to an intersection and was able to get turned around. 2 things I learned that day are that I need to get out of the moving industry asap and to never ever ever trust a dirt road even if your truck specific gps app takes you down one.

Rule #1 on my truck is that we don't go down a dirt/gravel road unless we are **ABSOLUTELY** sure that it's the only way. Okay, look. We all make stupid mistakes when we know better. Me, for example: I got my pads caught on a railroad crossing. Was I new? No. Was I kinda new to the industry? No. Did I try taking a road posted no trucks? Yep. 'cause it was a short cut. I didn't get fired, because I paid the tow bill on site ($1500, woulda been $1900 if my company paid it). And then I refused their offer to reimburse...since I was a dumbass. So...pay your tow bill and ALL repair costs, ya might be fine. Unless the company is sued or billed for property damage.

Ratchet strap some 2 x 4s to your drive tires for some methed out chain substitution. It's not like you can make it any worse.

I was about to really mess up some stuff in a Walmart parking lot today. Had to drive all over the walkway on the front of the store to avoid rubbing against anything
View on Reddit #9177120

NinjaFocus222@reddit

Use Google maps 360 view and make a plan before entering the parking lot. Sometimes, you can't park anywhere besides the docks or blocking the docks/drive path to the docks, so you just can't go to those ones.
View on Reddit #9178604

yeetyeet800@reddit

Thanks. I definitely should have done that on truckerpath satellite. I had just gotten up though. I get lucky getting through places more often than I should, but I'm thankful for it. Just gotta make sure to check out the area more. Usually going into the car section isn't a good idea
View on Reddit #9178759

NinjaFocus222@reddit

Any app you'd like. But just wingin it is a terrible idea, especially if you just woke up. I'm sure you already know that. But you will fuck some stuff up eventually if you don't take it seriously. You should also be doing that for every shipper or receiver. My first few months, I made so many mistakes following my GPS like a bonehead. And I'm also guilty of a walmart joyride. It gets worse. I'm js. Better to waste 10 mins than several hours filling out paperwork or waiting for a tow truck.

You probably won't get fired for just this, maybe wrote up and asked to pay part of the tow bill. Even if you get fired you can be in orientation for another job next week

Almost happened to me today. Called the non emergency line and got escorted out of some back roads full of sharp loads and dead ends in Virginia. My backing skills definitely improved today. Fully loaded never helps either. Good luck. Try the non emergency line.
