During the original dot com craze in the early '00s it was an anon msg board where people talked about shitcos about to go bust. It also devolved into raids, doxxing and spectacular trolls, and was generally disgusting and hilarious.
I was proud to have propelled the "F6 troll," which convinced noob users that upon posting 20,000 comments they would be invited to the premium "F6" board with better content. People would puke their guts out post 20,000 comments and then ask where their invite was, but of course there was no F6 board.
Because of the spooky accuracy of the content, a lot of people who are quite influential today were on FC in the olden days. I run into CIOs, CFOs, PMs and MDs who lose it when I ask them if they were on FC, it's a great icebreaker in the right parts of the GenX investment community.
I miss the wild west of the internet. I spent a lot of times in chat rooms messing with people. Turns out it wasn't hard to manipulate a whole char room. You'd go in as a new user and make small talk until some douchebag came along. Then you'd allow him to be a douchebag until someone called him out. That's when you'd jump on board and start in with the attacking his douchebagery. Until that user left. Then BAM you're pretty much in and one of the users. It was so strange how chat rooms worked. Then again I was like 12-16 during those times. I can't imagine being a grown man in a chat room. Reddit is as close as o get. Lol
