Serious question: Do you think the Top Gear crew intentionally went in to Argentina with an offensive license plate on one of their cars in 2014?

In 2014, the Top Gear crew got into some hot water when they entered Argentina with a car that said "H982 FKL", being driven by Jeremy. Argentinians were offended by this and thought they were making a deliberate reference to the 1982 Falklands War. They eventually had to be escorted out of the country by police and into Chile.
Do you think they did this on purpose? Why, why not?
Engir@reddit
Yes, to me it was obviously staged for several reasons!
One they said the problem started on the internet so how? I mean if the crew was taking images and posting them on the top gear site why would Argentinians be on the site that are not fans of the show? If the crew members where posting images on some media site it is a long shot that some Argentinian with a grudge would be following some crew member not widely known that works on the show. The next would be one of the three posted to a Media site like FB and to me that screams staged.
Lastly because the person they where supposedly negotiating with at the hotel was just a protester as the film portrayed him to me , the cops that were there in the film could have arrested him and anyone else that was there causing issues, trespassing onto the property of the hotel to damage the vehicles as was claimed to be going on in the film. They acted or treated him like he was some person of authority to negotiate with not just an angry protester leading what was described as dangerous, violent, even life threatening protest that again should have or would have been arrested and jailed?!

No-one stages a near death experience.
RoxyDzey69@reddit
extremely wrong :)
Hot-Manager-2789@reddit
Pretty sure the Top Gear team and presenters themselves said they didn’t intend to offend the residents of the town.
PestHavok9@reddit
A. It's time consuming to get a plate changed especially when you're on time constraints and the fact the cars were second hand not purchased with brand new custom plates. B. Is this really still a debate it was in 2014 it's 2022 let it go
infinitymind10@reddit
Im glad they haven't "let it go"... I only just watched the episode tonight. Let people talk about it of course.
PestHavok9@reddit
The episode aired YEARS AGO. People need to learn to move on it's been talked about plenty.
Dickheadmcgillicuty@reddit
Disagree. People come to different shows and entertainment pieces at different points in their life. Just because you want them to stop asking about it means their curiosity is invalid? Just because someone else has asked? You’re gatekeeping people who haven’t watched the show until recently… for what? Seems like you’re projecting. Is there something you struggle to “learn to move on” from?
Soft-Activity4770@reddit
It's not gatekeeping. There's multiple other pieces of information and evidence that they can see. You don't go around asking randoms on the street whenever you have a question do you. You ask Google. Your comment is just stupid.
RoxyDzey69@reddit
the comment i just wrote responding to yours just vanished and i cant seem to find it.. so ill repeat it again but shorter - if you dont like discussion in reddit and prefer using google search, gfto from here and use your google search yourself mate :) and let others who prefer reddit talk here free and peacefully.
Soft-Activity4770@reddit
Ironic how I can use your logic against you. Don't like telling people to research for themselves on Reddit. Then you get out of here because you're going against your own code of "let people do what they want on Reddit".
Asking a question on Reddit about something that takes a quick Google search is just being lazy.
There's more valid questions to ask on Reddit compared to this one
PestHavok9@reddit
There's nothing to debate tho but since you want to reach a bit then fine. The plate was original it wasn't custom, it was already verified in several reports. So back then when it aired yes this was a valid debate until around 2016 when the investigation had pretty much ceased. It's still a talking point yes but as to whether or not it was intentional that was put to bed already. The Argentinians were rightfully upset after they had suffered losses in the Falklands war. They already didn't like the British at the time either so think of it this way. British talk show hosts enter a country where the British are largely disliked. They enter with several vehicles one of which has a number plate that bears an uncanny resemblance to basic info about the war. Falklands as FKL and H982 year 1982. So under immediate notice of the plate they'd imagine it was a dig on the event. Unfortunately it was later discovered that they weren't lying about the plate and it was just a coincidence the plate was originally registered to a semigloss grey Porsche 928 back in 1991 and had been the only registered plate to date
Open_Theme6497@reddit
"rightfully upset" why have they got a right to be upset? they invaded someone else's sovereign territory and had their arses, quite righty, handed to them.
Public-Prompt-4877@reddit
What a incorrect take.
RoxyDzey69@reddit
what a incorrect grammar.
Open_Theme6497@reddit
so they didn't invade English overseas territory? or they weren't thrashed, soundly for their temerity? which is incorrect?
Public-Prompt-4877@reddit
I might have been drunk when I replied and mis understand. I actually agree with you
Open_Theme6497@reddit
lol. i am always posting pissed and then regretting it. thanks for your reply. it made my day!
6138@reddit
You mean the territory the british empire wrongfully claimed during their colonial days? And by "getting their asses handed to them" do you mean the Royal Navy lost FIVE ships to a country with a military a fraction of the size of theirs? The UK barely scraped a win in the falklands, it was embarassing.
Galahadgalahad@reddit
The only other country with a claim to the Falklands is Spain lmao
Dickheadmcgillicuty@reddit
Homie I know the whole story so I won’t read all that. I’m simply saying that asking about it isn’t a crime, some people really still don’t know and sometimes it’s difficult to find the answers you’re looking for. You said people need to stop talking about it like him asking because he didn’t know was a problem.
RoxyDzey69@reddit
never stop talking about history and the past - otherwise humans would never learn from it and would repeat the same mistakes again and again. humans tends to repeat them anyway, but i guess it would happen much more often and much worse otherwise.
Dickheadmcgillicuty@reddit
Also, I forgot the OP asked if it was intentional.
DrUnhomed@reddit
I watched it for the first time TODAY. 4 Nov. 2023. And was truly curious if they really ran into such a shit show as was depicted on the show. NGL... I 2x through a lot in the last 30 minutes because I couldn't look at one more fucking, muddy dirt road, and I am sitting on my comfy couch... I know they purposely bugger stuff up for the show.. but what they did to that 928 will haunt me for the rest of my life.. oh yeah, and the film crew almost getting killed by being stoned to death... that was almost as bad!
RayKVega@reddit
Get your head out of your ass, bud.
bgeerdes@reddit
My understanding is that the 3 stars and maybe a few others were evacuated some other way. Perhaps helicopter. They did not make the escorted drive to Chile and endure the attack. Somebody else was driving the star cars until they were abandoned for drawing too much attention. Never once in that part of the show do you see any of the trio.
RoxyDzey69@reddit
jeremy said after last grand tour screening when he did a short Q&A, he told everyone that the trio wasnt there anymore and they were long gone before the filming was finished. so bgeerdes is right at least more or less right with that one indeed.
Pumpkin-Commercial@reddit
Was it intentional? Probably not. Was it still stupid as fuck from them to keep going with it anyway? Fuck yes.
RoxyDzey69@reddit
was not stupid to keep going because they planned to use that license plate in the first place, so they didnt give a fuck and for ratings and viewing count they kept going and recording to make a legendary episode for many to watch. nearly causing ww3 interests everyone who watches television or everyone in general - and the fact that we still speak till this day about it just proves my point. they did this on purpose to attract a lot of attention, advertising the show in such way even, and they totally succeeded with that.
S70nkyK0ng@reddit
Absolutely.
Watching that challenge series right now.
Say James May’s plate out loud: N269 KNG
They are known for being cheeky and writing cheeky things on their cars in other challenges.
Clarkson especially is known for saying controversial or offensive things. It’s his character on and off screen.
They just did not anticipate being caught out on it or the reaction it would arouse.
RoxyDzey69@reddit
thats the most logical explanation and i think exactly the same
Tharuzan001@reddit
I know this post is a year old or so, but having watched it recently and how interesting this whole event is what was the most interesting is someone from Argentina did make a post that cleared up a lot of things.
The Radio Station in Argentina said, and I quote " reporting that a program from the BBC had came to the island JUST to provocate us. They told us that a bunch of english guys in some expensive cars had signs in their cars just to make us mad "
Basically, they thought this random BBC crew was entering their country waving British flags and swearing signs painted all over their cars. The actual plate was just another excuse they used to cause the riots.
The mayor of the biggest city there was involved in the riot and ready to attack the TG crew.
Add to that that the plate had been on the car for 13 years before the film.
Essentially, nothing was faked, the Argentinians were led to believe that they were being hated on by this crew by the locals themselves and then THEIR Government wanted an apology given to them instead of them apologising to the BBC.
Its everything Clarkson said it was, basically a witchhunt by the Government as elections were coming up in the next year. Most of the protesters who were there, had no idea why there was a riot but wanted to cause trouble and this gave them an excuse.
sinners_saint@reddit
Fuck Argentina
RoxyDzey69@reddit
funny that the pope is from that damned hell place
Impossible_Adagio367@reddit
Agreed
paokara777@reddit
My theory is that Jeremy (who always wanted to buy a 928 GT) found that car for sale, thought the number plates were funny, and planned a special in Argentina due to the number plate.
They have done specials before where they bought cars specifically for their stupid/funny number plates (all three cars had silly ones, can't remember the episode)
In no way do i know for sure, but that's my gut feeling. It seems to me way too much of a coincidence for it to be random.
HexorTyr@reddit
Don't ever rely on your gut feelings again. Why you even bothered to search the internet for a reddit discussion on this episode that aired in 2014 instead of looking for articles and interviews with the people that were part of the making of the episode boggles my mind.
It wasn't intentional. It wasn't a coincidence. It was just the easily offended Argentinians gagging for a reason to get angry. It's even explained in the show that someone who was part of a site posted a picture of the plate. They did nothing but reach for a reason.
jthydrick@reddit
This is the most reasonable explanation. There’s no way no one on staff noticed. Jeremy also speaks about the Falkland War during part one of the special. He sees a road map of the Falkland Islands along with the phrase “Argentina’s forever” and says “That is a straight face I am pulling right now. I will not spark fury on this trip”. And then they literally cut to a shot of the number plate on the very next shot.
Apprehensive_Emu2731@reddit
You obviously don't understand how editing works because they already knew it went bad and why it went bad, so it's a lil something called "foreshadowing" hint that the license plate is why they unintentionally passed off the Argentinians
RoxyDzey69@reddit
yeah editing was done when all that shit show already happened
paokara777@reddit
huh? wtf are you going on about. This was a post from 1 year ago and i replied 1 year ago when it was posted. Who "Searched the internet for a reddit discussion" ?
My gut feeling is still my gut feeling, nothing you said convinced me otherwise
Tharuzan001@reddit
I searched it and found this post, but its not the correct post.
The correct reddit post detailing why it happened was posted by an Argentinian.
They were attacked because the local radio station said that "reporting that a program from the BBC had came to the island JUST to provocate us. They told us that a bunch of english guys in some expensive cars had signs in their cars just to make us mad "
The plate was just a coincidence, As the car had been registered on that plate for 13 years before the film.
paokara777@reddit
and then
in the next reply.
Youre the one "to search the internet for a reddit discussion on this episode that aired in 2014"
My theory that they found the car with that plate and decided to make an episode around that plate and car is still my theory. Is it more than just a theory? no. Is it in my opinion likely? yes. Why you care so much 10 years after the fact, and hilariously call me out for "searching out a topic and replying to it" when this is literally what YOU did not me, is laughable.
KingSiciliano@reddit
Perhaps planning the entire episode around the car is a bit much, but I could definitely see them deciding to ultimately pick that car for the license plate.
Either way, it doesn't justify the violence.
Weekly-Ingenuity-392@reddit
That wasn’t the same person who replied to your original comment lol
Proud_Contract_5097@reddit
It wasn't really easily offended Argentinians. It doesn't take any reading between the lines to see the number plate of H982 FKL as 1982 Falklans and it is easy to believe that that is something Top Gear would do, so I think the Argentianians thinking that it was a dig at the Falklans is pretty reasonable and most of us thought the same when it aired. Forming a mob, however, wasn't reasonable.
jthydrick@reddit
This is the most reasonable explanation. There’s no way no one on staff noticed. Jeremy also speaks about the Falkland War during part one of the special. He sees a road map of the Falkland Islands along with the phrase “Argentina’s forever” and says “That is a straight face I am pulling right now. I will not spark fury on this trip”. And that also feels conspicuous to me.
RoxyDzey69@reddit
knowing how edgy controversial and legendary all in a good way jeremy clarkson can and like to be pretty often (thats why he is so interesting and funny as a character and a host to begin with), i would definitely not be surprised if that what paokara777 said was actually the case here. my hunch about this one is exactly the same. and when they realized how bad it actually was, they tried to control the damage as much as possible then.
_Revelator_@reddit
From Richard Porter's And On That Bombshell: Inside the Madness and Genius of Top Gear:
"The number plate of Jeremy’s Porsche 928 caused a storm of controversy we couldn’t have seen coming and inspired some extraordinary conspiracy theories. One said that we’d been planning to visit Argentina and had searched the country to find a car with a plate that could rile the locals. Yet the Porsche had been registered with that sequence of letters and numbers since it was new in 1991. To have found it we’d have needed to hack the DVLA computer system illegally and then hope that the car still existed, that it wasn’t a tractor or a lorry or something we didn’t want, and that it was for sale. Ah no, said another conspiracy theory, it’s the other way around. They found this Porsche for sale, realised the plate said something that could be offensive to Argentinians and decided to shoot their next special in South America, causing trouble wherever they went. This ignores the amount of long-term planning that goes into a Top Gear special, planning that had been ongoing for months before the Porsche was bought.
"As the newspapers and the websites turned themselves frothy with indignation at another stupid Top Gear stunt, our desperate attempts to provide the calm and logical proof that the plate was a pure coincidence sounded like a squeak drowned out by the roar of outrage. The trouble was, we were hoisted by our own petard. To an outsider, this sounded like exactly the sort of idiotic thing Top Gear would do. Personally, I thought it seemed too subtle to be one of our daft endeavours. We’d have daubed things down the sides of the cars, as we did in North America all those years ago. And there was no way we were going to do that or anything like it because we already had the extensive research and warnings from local fixers which told us that the Falklands situation was a hot topic in Argentina, it was being raised again by a sabre-rattling government and we should not make light of it if we wanted to come home alive. We had no idea that our best intentions would be betrayed by a horrible quirk of fate.
"We’d decided in early spring that South America was the destination for the next special after plans to follow the Silk Road across to China had dissolved due to concerns about the length of the journey [...] The presenters were asked to pick a V8-engined car they liked. We were sitting round in the office with Jeremy one day, looking at various cars online, when he announced that he wanted a Porsche 928. Someone starting tapping in a search. ‘No, wait,’ he interrupted. ‘928 GT. That was an epic car. Find me a 928 GT.’
"[...] Many years ago, Jeremy declared it his favourite 928 of all. The problem is, it wasn’t a massive success when new and a look round the internet turned up just two for sale. One of our researchers called the numbers in both ads and left messages asking to inspect the cars as soon as possible. Only one of the sellers called back. Since the star cars needed to be on a boat across the Atlantic as soon as possible or they wouldn’t make the scheduled start of shooting, a Porsche mechanic was dispatched to have a look at the car. He declared that it was good, and on that basis it was bought remotely, collected from the seller by a shipping company and crated up for its long trip to South America. No one from our team ever physically saw the car and when we checked back we discovered that the plates had been blanked out in the ad.
"The three V8s made it to the start point in Bariloche and were stashed at a local hotel. It’s here that an Argentinian website, tipped off that Top Gear was coming to town, papped the cars and put the pics online. This was slightly annoying for us and warranted a spoiler alert but there was nothing we could do. The presenters and the crew fetched up shortly afterwards and their road trip began. No one read anything into the plate on the 928. If you’re from Britain you don’t look too hard at British plates since they’re a functional fact of life and the start of a shoot is always fraught with many other concerns, leaving precious little time to see hidden messages where none exist. Back in London, however, a keen-eyed person in the office happened to read the comments section underneath the Argentinian car pap’s pics and noticed that someone had spotted what they thought was a sly reference to the Falklands War. It was a hell of a leap of logic, but we were concerned that it was getting attention. By the time we got hold of the crew on the ground they’d discovered the growing internet conspiracy too. There were alternative plates in the car, left over from its brief time on a private registration, but to stick them on now would be weird and it would knacker continuity. Instead, we had some ‘comedy’ plates bearing swear words made up in the UK and planned for Richard and James to affix them to Jeremy’s car as an on-camera prank, once they’d been delivered by a crew member joining the group later in the trip. Unfortunately, they got there too late.
"[...] The sad thing is, we could have had an upbeat and good-natured ending to this adventure. Our intended The End of the World Cup item could have been great, featuring our three plucky cars against a specially sourced squad of locally made Fiats decked out in national colours and driven by the finest car footballers the region could supply. When everything went to cock, a whole stadium made of shipping containers was almost complete down at the docks in Ushuaia. Better yet, Team Top Gear had a star substitute on his way in the form of England legend Gary Lineker. In fact, when things went sour and our plan went awry, the former footballer was moments away from getting on the plane at Heathrow and only a frantic phone call stopped him flying all the way to Argentina for nothing; except, we must presume, a pretty frosty reception. As an aside, Lineker was later booked to be our studio guest for the eighth show of series 22, just before everything went wrong. If you’re a car show hoping for smooth running, my advice is don’t book Gary Lineker."
Vivid-Ad6850@reddit
Rubbish. NO ONE would see a 1982 FLK license plate and think it would be a good idea to bring to Argentina, unless they had no idea how much Argentines still hate the English because of the Falkland War - 1. Zero chance no one noticed the license plate beforehand 2. Zero chance that was just a random series of numbers and letters
DoughnutPristine4790@reddit
The car was 1st registered in 1991 with this plate so it absolutely without question a random set of letters and numbers.
So unless you propose they went looking for a sports car that fit the story and had suitable plates, it was not set up on purpose.

There is a 1 in 10000 chance that the license plate would be 1982 - and a possibly 1 in a million chance it would randomly be 1982 FKL. If anyone thinks that wasn’t on purpose they’re kidding themselves. Argentina doesn’t mess around when it comes to that war and their hatred of England picking off Argentine ships in masses. Top Gear did what they do in every country- think they can ride the razor’s edge of offensive and get away with it. First the incident in Alabama and then Argentina. They’re damn luck they got out of there, but they were 100% to blame for bringing it onto themselves

deleted_by_reddit@reddit
No. It was absolutely not intentional, definitely not. And quite frankly, it had been discussed to death back when the episode aired.
Captain Slow talked about this in an interview and he said that it was a coincidence, and - I agree there - while you may be able to backsolve from the Falklands reference after the fact, it's not something you can just obviously read out of the numberplate without having it pointed out to you. In fact: The car - a specific rare variant Jezza wanted to have - already had that numberplate before Top Gear bought them for the episode, so it was "a 1 in 2 chance" of getting that specific numberplate as there were two of that car on offer.
Proud_Contract_5097@reddit
It's not something you can obviously read? It was H982 FKL - that's pretty damn obvious. Doesn't take an Argentinian nationalist to read that as 1982 Falklans especially when the Top Gear team would have been doing a load of research on Argentina and the Falklans and had been given warnings by Argentinian fixers about referencing the Falklans and Jeremy is a massive war nerd. If they genuinely didn't see it, then the entire team are a bunch of morons. Humans are exceptional at reading between the lines and seeing patterns in everything - it's why we see shapes in the clouds and why optical illusions work, so they definitely should have seen the reference in the plate. The Argentinians weren't exactly jumping through hoops to see what they wanted to see with that number plate - it was jumping out at them.

PlzImJustAResearcher@reddit
The guys do some stupid shit, but never "possibly get banned from an entire country when a lot of money is on the line", nor "get our lives threatened by locals to the point of needing police escorts to the airport". I think their boundary line and record otherwise is character witness enough to prove that wouldn't be on purpose.
They had 2 cars to pick from that Jeremy wanted. Of those two cars, the unfortunately registered car was chosen because it was in better condition.
Is there the possibility that that letter sequence and everything passed as a litterally passing thought to Jeremy at some point? Sure, but never to the point that it made an impactful enough thought that it could be a potential issue.
Both sides can be right here. Jeremy likely at some point thought "*FKL" 'oh like the Falklands. Also 984 is wildly close to 1984." And then went on about his day. Let's be completely honest that Jeremy doesn't often think more than surface layer on things. I certainly believe that in that same line of thought, he didn't maliciously go out of his way to make an issue.
Hot-Manager-2789@reddit
No, it wasn’t staged.
Budget-Vast-7296@reddit
Optical illusions work specifically because humans are bad at "seeing between the lines." If we were so good at it, illusions would objectively not work because we'd see what's happening. But go off, I guess.

Hot-Manager-2789@reddit
It was a co-incidence. Proof: James May and Richard Porter said so.
ForeignCantaloupe710@reddit
Ah, yes, the BBC hacked into the records for license plates. And, of course, they managed to obviously fake all of the documentation for 13 years.
That makes complete sense. This was a plot over 13 years in the making.
Public-Prompt-4877@reddit
If you read that's whole thing you would see where they said it was 1 of 2 Porsche 928. And they didnt see the plate till they arrived in Argentina.
Tharuzan001@reddit
You are grasping at straws and once again are only able to notice it because you were told how to notice it.
Normal people had no idea what the plate meant. They only found out from internet comments from a pap picture of the car posted online. The car had that plate since 1991, 13 years before the shoot.
MisterFribble@reddit
Have you listened to the Some Say podcast where Collins interviews Wilman? Wilman makes it very clear that they never saw the plate until they made it to Argentina. And when they saw the plate the crew was pissed at him until they realized how it would be almost impossible for even top gear to make such a colossal mistake and have that car be the exact car Jeremy wanted.
AdAlarmed6181@reddit
Still though, I can see one of them or a producer doing a little wink and nod saying “nobody will ever notice but us” kind of thing, does seem very top gearish even if it’s unlikely.
HexorTyr@reddit
No, I don't think you can. That's exactly the attitude the Argentinians employed to reach for a reason to be angry.
They never want shit like this to happen.
pffffffrffrt@reddit
I honestly think that it was an accident. Jeremy’s Porsche had that numberplate since the start and probably nobody noticed any reference for thirty years or so. But if some nationalists look for some reason to be mad about other people, they‘ll gonna find it.

"tell me an example how we are Nazis by how we act"
Uh, maybe when you had a mob of people attacking people of a disfavored group based on rumors? Read about Kristalnacht.

100%, the ONLY reason the country suddenly decided to annex a British island is because the dictator in power wanted a propaganda win.. The island had only been inhabited by Brits for centuries
There's countless other scenarios where the aggrieved party is totally justified in being pissed at the Brits for their centuries of colonial shenanigans & id absolutely agree with them, or the many many instances of us yanks topping a democratically elected leader to prop up a dictator, and supporting many many fascist regimes in the name of opposing the soviets..but this is an uncommon scenario where the UK wasn't in the wrong.
Even setting that aside, these nationalist assholes STILL being butthurt decades later over an extremely minor skirmish as if it was the most important war of the 20th century is insane, and assaulting a film crew is just straight up fucked.
But back when that happened there was soooo many Argentinan fans coming out to condemn them and apparently there it was just one radio show that blew it all up out of proportion and riled up the assholes.
The reason so many Nazis fled there was Juan Peron happily welcomed them and gave them refuge, and the elites there have always felt superior to their SA neighbors. Wealthy Germans and Argentina's already there were stoked to bring them over. And the assholes that attacked top gear would most likely have been sharing beers with them too.
Ive been watching the show since the early 00s as a kid, to add more context I can point to many many instances of Clarkson being a jackass or objectively wrong, denying climate change, Tory policies, Id have no problem calling him out but this time it wasn't on him, the plates had been on it for years. I mean hell, even if it was intentionally referencing the war it was from an Argentinan.
99% of the time their jokes making fun of other countries are just classic British humor, never malicious, and yet when it comes to the specials they are always absolutely gushing about the countries being super positive about the sights and people, from Vietnam to Burma, the only time they went somewhere to blatantly point and laugh was the American south, and they were completely correct haha, everyone in America also makes fun of that bible bashing third world redneck craphole. This time they had been nothing but positive

So you're a member if the human caused climate change cult.. Ajy half wit with a but if investigation beyond mainstream corporate led sources knows its a load of nonsense.. Yes climate change is real.. but the fear being spouted is uter hogwash... Pure money making directive by thr higevr ups to force more scarcity economics onto us. There's a lot more to it. I recommend reading some of Witney Webbs articles on the level of corruption in this area and beyond. Plus the copious number of retired scientists without the pressures of getting these grants etc clearly explaining the situation and waking through all the evidence. Our society had been led astray hy a relatively small group of people.. Who have captured our financial system and used usury and interest on the peoples money creation to hold us all to ransom Ignorance and distraction got us here.. Knowledge and mobilisation will get us out of it

Mate, I'm assuming English is not your first language, so I'll break this down for you:
> Asks for example of how Argentinians act 'like Nazis'
> Is told that the 2014 Top Gear Incident resembles an infamous example of Nazism
> This is embarrassing because the original commenter assumed it was difficult to provide an example of Argentinians acting like Nazis not realizing that the act being discussed could so easily be compared to a famous Nazi act

I mean shit, how many want a return to the military junta? To many to not be nazis.

You seriously think he randomly had a license plate with BOTH 1982 AND FKL??? The chances are 1 in a million. No way they didnt do that as a joke, but they lazily didn’t research how seriously pissed off the Argentines would be. They have no one to blame but themselves.

The focus is always on the fact the numberplate was original to that car.
People seem to completely skim the reality that in many many classified car ads, the numberplate is visible and the car could have been entirely chosen on that basis alone.
I think the coincidence is actually that Jeremy said he drove one to see his dying father because the way he treated the car, he also claimed to have a soft spot for the car but nobody with a soft spot for a car would be okay with butchering it into a pick up and trashing it offroad.

It may well have been a coincidence. Problem is it’s quite the coincidence & it was on Jeremy’s car (who we all know would 100% do something like this as a joke). Hard to give them the benefit of the doubt

If you go on gov.uk and check not history that registration (h982 folk) is registered to a Honda and has been since 1990
shaggy454@reddit
h982 folk is not registered to anything. Too many digits.
H982 FKL is registered to the grey 1991 Porsche in question, since 1991.
H982 FLK is registered to a Honda, yes.....a 598cc motorcycle, and is completely unrelated to what happened with Top Gear in Argentina.
SassyySasquatchh@reddit
Absolutely not. The Argentinians are all a bunch of baby's that cant accept the Falklands are British. No respect for any of them.

I think that the plate thing was a genuine coincidence To base a whole trip and special with the originating factor being a numberplate would be ridiculous - some say it could be a top gear style of joke but I think a war in living memory on both sides in a part of the world that's still got strong feelings about it is a push.
Like others said there's a book from a Top Gear crew member who said that the car was practically bought sight unseen, with only a mechanic going on behalf of TG to inspect the car to see if it was probably running on all 8 cylinders and wouldn't fall apart or break severely on the trip (sadly the terrain on the special had other ideas).
Remember the 928 GT is quite hard to come by in the spec Jeremy wanted (manual gearbox) so they only had 2 options to take, and the only seller that responded (and according to James the car in better condition) had their car sold to TG and whisked away for transport.
They thought of a humorous remedy which iirc would've occurred for the actual football match but the crew were ordered to leave, were mobbed, cars smashed to bits and dumped.
On the cars side, it was first registered with the plate in May 1991, when it was first registered after it was built. Apart from a stint on a private plate from the late 90s to the early 2000s from memory, it was always on H982 FKL.
When the crew departed for that now infamous escape towards the border, they removed the plate to presumably prevent more uproar from the mob they were due to face to discover the private plate (believe it was H1 VAE) still on the car. By the photos of the car post collection by the police it seems the rear private plate was left on, and the H982 plate was stuck on after the car reverted to that registration.
I do understand that to the locals it could be seen as a reference to the war, but from a legal standpoint it wasn't faked - I highly doubt TG based a whole special on that plate alone and it would've been almost impossible - with the time it takes to find cars, book hotels determine routes and the main mission for the special etc, and even if they did plan on offending Argentina at the time with some form of plate, for them to identify what would offend them, and to hunt for a car with that reg would've been time consuming.
The cars don't exist anymore either, they were crushed in 2017 by the authorities there to prevent future rioting (although why they didn't just quietly dump the cars in a container and shop them back to the UK is a decent question to ask)
RearAdmiralP@reddit
It is slightly changed now, but before 2001, the UK assigned a different letter prefix to number plates depending on the year that they were issued. That "H" prefix corresponds to 1990. According to Porsche nerds, Jeremy was driving a 928 GT. The GT trim came out at the beginning of 1989 and stopped production at the end of the '91 model year. So, the date prefix on the number plate matches the very narrow range when that specific trim of the 928 was sold. As a result, I'm willing to buy the argument that it's the plate that came with the car.
It's possible that Clarkson / the producers found the car for sale with that plate, expected it to be offensive, and then worked backwards to create the show around the offensive plate, but I think this is a bit of a stretch.
