Neat! I had never heard of these. [Here's the Wikipedia article for those interested](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrosome)
>Each zooid is a few millimetres in size, but is embedded in a common **gelatinous tunic** that joins all of the individuals.
Found my new band name.
I have no idea how big a sperm whale is. Heard a podcast use yellow school buses for scale, thats more relatable. Last week I read about a meteor the size of six orcas, my boyfriend asked if it was solid intact orcas or pureed, he seems to believe orca puree would take up less space and I again don't know enough about whale mass to argue.
Idk if you're joking or nah but the supermarket whake got its name frome the thick white gunk in its head that sailors found and hunted it for. They thought it was just a whole buncha cum fuelin' their candles, and that's kinda metal.
The first year I started diving I saw one of these 10ft down while drifting on the surface after doing a shark drift dive in Jupiter FL then I saw a huge Goliath Grouper larger than any shark I've ever seen. Many cool things out there. It looked like a translucent 30 ft long sock.
DNA. It’s not a guaranteed universal constant. Aliens would likely have another system of information transfer between generations. And even DNA was a crossover, DNA between species has commonalities. We humans might be 97% of a chimpanzee, bust still share at least 50% same exact DNA with a carrot.
Correct. If you think of earth carbon based biology as an operating system, then DNA is the hard drive memory, and the order DNA is in and expressed is the software.
Any of those could be wildly different for alien life. Instead of carbon, the alien operating system could be a based on a core structure of silicon, germanium, palladium or others. [See this wiki](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypothetical_types_of_biochemistry#:~:text=Titanium%2C%20aluminium%2C%20magnesium%2C%20and,based%20life%20would%20be%20unlikely)
For the DNA “memory” it could be totally different molecules, or even not chemistry at all if you want to consider energy etc. there’s nothing saying that our 4 nucleotides make up the only way to read and write and store information.
And the order and expression of the memory “DNA” system, whatever that is, would be written in a totally foreign way. Think a different language that may not even use of basic concepts. For instance DNA genes program proteins or tiny machines to carry out specific functions, when triggered at certain times. Like hormones triggering female humans to become male (we all start female). An alien system might “always be on” and whatever is produced the most is what happens. The galaxies the limit.
Even a slight difference to one of those things would be wildly different and noticeable m, assuming we could even identify it as life. Crazy huh?
Not only DNA crossover, but the very existence of DNA and the molecules that make it up. We don't really know what the genetic molecule of a completely alien species would take the form of. And to go even further, molecules like amino acids and sugars have a "handedness" called chirality. Meaning they cannot be superimposed on their mirror image, but both forms do exist. If you create these molecules through basic chemical reactions, you get an equal mixture of both molecules--but not in biological life, which heavily favors chiral molecules. For example, amino acids that make up proteins (and four of which make up the four bases of DNA) all share the same chirality, the same handedness. Well, this chirality of amino acids dictates the chirality and shape of the proteins they form. And the shape and folding of proteins dictates the function of the protein. If alien life evolved somewhere completely independent of life on earth, there's not really a strong reason to believe they'd have evolved to even use chirality the same on the molecular level. For example, while amino acids are chiral and exist as both forms, we only see the L- chirality making up life on earth, and we don't really know why.
Im not an expert so i may get details wrong but to use a kind of laymans explanatuon we can use genetic samples to see common roots to other creatures also from earth.
Idk why people are making such a big deal about aliens…. We have literally had them in our oceans since the beginning. LOOK AT THIS THING!! That a fucking alien if I’ve ever seen one
I think these tubes are made up of a lot of small organism , a tube is simply an efficient form to clump together. It probably has some advantage over free floating.
Correct, pyrosomes are colonies made up of zooids. The speculation on the shape is that it both allows them to appear larger (and less appetizing to potential predators) and also helps create a channel for water (and food) to flow through, increasing the colony's ability to feed.
They're faaaaantastic!
I feel like I could totally vibe with Zooids..
Let us all hold hands to look big and get food more efficiently..
Humans think they're so smart but our housing developments don't filter Ribeyes from the air.
"All Tomorrow's" is a short book about a speculative future of humanity which ends up with humans artificially diversifying (due an alien force) into a whole bunch of other organisms.
The "colonials" were people living on a planet which managed to defend against the first wave of the aliens, so they were punished by being turned into zooids kinda: https://aliens.fandom.com/wiki/Colonial_(All_Tomorrows)
Small creature is sufficiently successful at living and makes babies. Turns out that babies which are a tiny bit larger are better at surviving, so they get statistically higher chance to make more babies than if it was smaller.
Repeat for X million years.
Everyone who knows evolution is a real process understands that already. It's pretty much a layman's turn of phrase rather than a claim of creative direction.

Absolutely fascinating lifeform which puts our own existence into question.
I’ve thought about this a lot.
If we consider that the entire human species is a pyrosome, then our internet is the nervous system which controls data flow throughout the body.
Our other bodily systems need the nervous system in order to properly operate.
The problem we have as a species, in my opinion, is that we don’t have enough transparency between systems. The body will die if the digestive systems fails, but gives signals to the brain that it’s fine.
I think if we’re going to evolve as a species, we’re going to have to eventually reach a point where we recognize our species as a pyrosome, and design all our systems to reflect a healthy organism.
We’re almost there. The internet is basically step 1.

And they GLOW!
>Although many planktonic organisms are bioluminescent, pyrosome bioluminescence is unusual in its brilliance and sustained light emission.
>Pyrosomes often exhibit waves of light passing back and forth through the colony, as each individual zooid detects light and then emits light in response.

I mean they dont but thats kind if the point evolutio. Isnt a concious process but rather coinsidences of genetics that allow for survival. So if a creature evolutioniarly outcompeted uts old predatora it wont just revert to a smaller size unless that development provides an advantage towards reproduction post predator.
Tldr. Got big to nit get eatwn things that ate starved. Creature remained big
