18" make a good 100-300yd deer gun right?
Assuming ~25fps per inch loss? Any reason, other than maybe it being significantly louder, to go 20-22" over this?
With that being said, would the ranch in 300bo or 7.62x39 be just as good for 100-300y deer, maybe supers with hunting but also can rock a can with subs for fun, etc?
I'll have to look up some energy/fps numbers for supers/subs compared to 308, but just spitballing here.
200 yards would be the absolute max you would want to hunt with 300blk, x39 would get you to 200 yards a little better. Neither will be good for deer past 200 that's for sure.
If distance matters more, just get the .308. If shooting with a can matters more, get the .300blk
The ranch in 300 BO is only good for 200 max and in from my experience. I just got one to hunt in Virginia with where the max expected distances are about 150.
I love mine to death. Light enough to hunt with but still has a heavy enough barrel to not string out shots from heat. Plus that barrel profile and length combo gives it very good harmonics and makes it stupid consistent with handloads/ match ammo. Very hard value to beat.
Can second this. Mine shoots Hornady soft point like it was built for it. The trigger is insanely clean for how inexpensive of a gun this is as well, I can't recommend ruger American enough at that price.
I want to point out a spring kit for the trigger. At $10 shipped from a lad off ebay named oldbeavergunsmith, moves the trigger break point to 2- 3 lbs depending on how you adjust it.
I've put it in all of my Ruger Americans.
Technically Ruger's have no warranty...but they will fix damn near anything and replace everything no questions asked.

For anyone else asking. Yes, these are a good budget rifle for the money. Not like the Remington 770 fiasco from many years ago.
Things to consider...
Short barrel (positive or negative depending on your need)
Threaded barrel... Great at this price point, almost unheard of a few years ago in the hunting rifle world.
Not stainless, which I don't care for, but I'll say Rugers version beats everything else out in this price range that I've seen. I wish Nitride was more popular on hunting rifles that don't have the budget for stainless.
I have 2 friends with these. 1 has issues with brass getting stuck in chamber, requiring a rod to push it out.
The stock is plastic... Solid, but not perfect and the barrel may or likely to touch it, so you may want to do some fine tuning with it when you get it. Both of my friends have this (minor) issue. Just expect to need to do some sanding if you plan to keep the factory stock.
Ruger will take care of you either way, so have confidence in that, solid company.
Sub $400, pick one up. At their normal $550 I think I'd spend a bit more to upgrade into something a bit nicer.
Yeah, it's really hard to beat Ruger in this niche. Their polymer nor frills bolt-actions are awesome.
I will say that you may do what I did and buy a nice all-weather Henry or stainless Marlin only to realize they're too beautiful to bring in the bush. In comes these bad boys, you won't be fretting gouging the stock against a branch at this price.

Buy this and you technically spent $1700 on two guns so ...850 each. Or buy this and a the $90 22 revolver deal and you got two rifles and a revolver for 600 smacks each.
