What happened to theme shirts?

Posted by apsando@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 60 comments

I got reminded of the Coed Naked shirts today and it sparked a conversation about, I guess you'd call them, theme shirts. I wouldn't call them a line of shirts, I guess it's more like a series of licensed brands. I would add the front/back Looney Tunes to this list too

Our school banned them. I used to LOVE those. "Co-ed Naked Soccer: Get your kicks on the grass."

I grew up in Northern VA so I was trying to place what that even means but then I thought about my cousin from Baltimore and it all came together.

My family vacationed in Myrtle Beach ever year and my mom would get so mad at me looking at these shirts. My young innocent self thought the joke of the Big Johnson shirts was that this nerdy guy got all the hot girls. Looking at them now that I get the joke, I hate to admit that they're kinda clever.

Big Johnson had a “the south will rise again” confederate flag collection that all of the redneck kids at my elementary school wore.

I had a co-ed naked marching band t-shirt. It had a bunch of instruments shaped into a G-clef and said “beat It, blow it, toss it”.

Adults should absolutely roll their eyes and move along when the pre teens and new to teenage hood try to be edgy and wear coed naked shirts. I can't believe these shirts were able to get a rise out of adults- over cheesy terrible humor. It cracks me up. Oh no my kid is likes Beer Whizz Coed Naked Drinking with Big Johnson shirts!!

I hated these and similar brand so much in the early ‘90s. But it is worth noting that they were a pre-Internet example of memes. That might also answer your question. It’s now much easier and cheaper to communicate something gross and/or unoriginal.

Huh... they actually weren't vacation shirts or made fun of where I was from. They were never as ubiquitous like No Fear shirts. They always struck me as intended for teen/ college age, but by far they were purchased more by middle- aged dudes who thought they were remaining edgy and hip. I suppose that could have been middle- aged vacationers of course, just that they didn't strike me as travel junk at the time. Just like... No Fear if it had "naked coed" in it and never quite caught on.

I remember these. Begged for a Big Dog shirt, got one and wore it only once. Got made fun of for it at school and never wore it again.
