In South London there was a 'take the piss out of gentrifying estate agents' by calling Penge Pengay, Stockwell Saint Ockwell, that sort of thing.

Just take the first syllable or two and there's your nickname for most places, cov Coventry, ox Oxford, glas Glasgow, etc. Or throw on an m/s, cams Cambridge, eds Edinburgh, Brum Birmingham, Mancs Manchester etc. Only other differences I can think of are things like the old smoke/smokie for London.

Not in my whole life of being born, raised, and educated in Edinburgh have I ever heard anyone called it ‘eds’. That’s just not a thing. I can trace my family back hundreds of years in Edinburgh and having just done a cursory check with several other family members, none of them have heard it either.

Well nicknames don't tend to come from the people who live there, half my family lives in Scotland, we all call it eds or eddy. But like I say we pretty much just follow the grab first syllable and leave it at that or add for a nickname. All my mates do the same. Different circles call things different things. What do you call it for short?

It's not used very often but I have heard Aberdeen being called the silver city with the golden sands, but it's mostly just the granite city. Peterhead is the blue toon and Fraserburgh is the broch

Aberdream is one I’ve heard that’s seemingly positive for Aberdeen, I’ve only ever heard it used by locals mockingly though. Aberdoom is another one and more realistic.

Um, yes. I don't think I said Norfolk was a city. But it, like the other counties I did mention, is definitely a place. I was referring to the Lincs/Norfolk border coastal area, which has been The Wash since at least the last glaciation.

Where I now live, many refer to it as Mordor, which they don't consider derogatory given the reputation 😂 (It's really not that bad here, but a scruffyish working town in middle of a touristy area)
