Being naturally stingy is really helpful honestly. Sure there are downsides, mostly social ones, but overall it's much better than being a natural spendthrift.
I legitimately don’t understand how people who make significantly less than I do go on these nice ass vacations and routinely order Uber Eats/door dash, etc.
I do get it in the sense they’re not contributing to retirement and probably have a ton of CC debt Where I put like 30% of my savings into retirement and don’t have any CC debt. But just don’t get how people are ok with it
Try it, its far better to spend tens of thousands on toys and expensive “memories” and understand that truly it doesn’t benefit you than question why people are the way they are but still respect that a lot of people live for the dopamine rollercoaster.
Learned helplessness, they are too deep into this shit and cant see themselves ever achieving exchanging temporary pleasures for permanent satisfaction/stability
When people don't have the same interests as you, het you feel the need to boast it like you're better than everyone.
Bro you're on reddit at 7am. Own your loserdome like the rest of us and stop talking out your ass

While I agree with you about not shitting on what people like, I'm sick of people assuming everyone on here is American. It's 9:17PM here in Australia.
Well good job being employed and not a bum

Ill never understand adults that need to buy toys for themselves to just put on a shelf and forget about. And if you still play with them you probably have some kind of developmental disorder. I still have my old star wars toys but i dont worship them and surround myself with them like im a child showing off at reccess. At the very least its a terrible investment. If you want to make any legitimate retirement money off of your toys youd have to be a scalper or own a toy shop. You might as well buy beanie babies. If you always keep a foot firmly planted in the past youll never grow.
Hard disagree. Some IPs and lines do better or worse than others, but if you happen to like the same thing a bunch of other people like and will continue to like, you should at least keep up with inflation. I have a bunch of higher end 1:64 diecast models and those do a lot better than inflation. I also have a collection of Dragon Ball figures. That is about as popular as it ever was. Now, granted, I didn't purchase any of these thinking to make an investment out of them, but it definitely helps that they are doing better than inflation. You can still invest in the regular stocks and property if that's feasible, but choosing a *smart* thing to collect is doable.
Now if OOP is just buying every new game that comes out and niche figures no one cares about or are propped up by temporary hype, that's a terrible investment
> 1:64 diecast models and those do a lot better than inflation
Im not arguing this isnt possible but you have to be very lucky because its based entirely on organic interest. Which you cant track and has no hard data associated with it. And yes you should absolutely invest int the stock market instead of toys. Its feasible and the commissions are very small compared to the money you can make.
Also, have you tried actually sell any of your collections? Have you gotten book value? Im an investor but my side business is vintage furniture. You are lucky to get a quick sale at the value you hope for for toys i expect its much more volatile.
So, surprisingly, yes. I have gotten an appreciate market value for the items I have sold. Typically I don't sell for cash but instead trade for other items to put in my collection valued at more than (almost exclusively MSRP) for what I traded away. I get that this is not going to be the case for every fdiecast car out there, but I have a good sense of what is popular in the community and I just do happen to have interest in the same things, so that works out.
Again, I don't view this as an investment to supplant the stock market, this is a hobby that, if done with a mediocre amount of trend analysis, can compete with inflation, all as a secondary purpose. The main purpose as corny as it sounds is I like little cars and they look neat. I enjoy looking at them more than my stock portfolio and can talk about them with other enthusiasts, something I don't really find joy in with other stock investors.
Another unsung trait that is very definitely not shared with vintage furniture is my meager 4 figure collection can fit in a large plastic tote, where as equivalent valued furniture can take up an order of magnitude more space
I think it's fine to an extent like having a nice environment around you but once it gets to the point of filling entire walls of stuff it's definitely way too much
Those people that have so many figures that they can only pose them standing stock-still with their arms at their sides is a perfect example.
Like, what is the point of buying nice figures with a lot of articulation if you’re not going to give them a dynamic pose?
This is a huge issue with Star Wars collectors because those fuckers love stormtroopers and clone troopers to the point where every time hasbro releases a new one they get sold out immediately in scalped. People will buy hundreds of those things to “army build”. Same thing with Lego Star Wars (to the point where it’s become a meme in that community too lazily make a post with a bunch of troopers on a gray base plate). It’s absolutely ridiculous and then you look at their displays and it’s just, cool man, you have a fuck ton of storm troopers. Happy for you?
I just don’t get people who do that, like I collect figures, but I collect individual ones for certain characters and stuff that I like the design and sculpt of, and then I put them in actual dioramas where they are posed and placed. idk at the end of the day I’m not that much different from them because I’m also collecting fucking toys but i like to treat them as decoration and as a project because otherwise they’re not that fun to me.
Here, I’ll put my cards on the table. No shame:
https://preview.redd.it/pzw2btk6n95h1.jpeg?width=4733&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=546b06d03d5426201087e5ac4f27ef779f8e5aba
There’s a whole community of toy photographers and such who make them (but usually as a one off for individual photos). People on the r/starwarscollecting subreddit post them from time to time.
Yeah 100% I agree. Like if they have the money and like it I guess fair enough but it's something I've never understood because they do just kinda get forgotten. I brought a lot of plushies and stuff but I actually use them for a stream set and stuff so I think that's a bit different.
I guess but is that a nice environment? Being constantly surrounded by interpretations of works of fiction? Feels more like a mental comfort blanket. You can buy real art, photos of loved ones, plants etc for a nice environment which doesn't also keep you frozen in time
"real art" is where you fuck up here. There's no difference between what i assume you actually mean is "high art" and a figure/statue/painting/3D render etc of a character or scene that a person likes.
Seeing as most high art involves an incredible amount of tax fraud and nepotism, I'd say it's really just as childish/performative if you worship a painter just because you've been told he's popular.
Right I mean, there is though. Visual art is made to be vsiaul art, it's supposed to be provocative and beautiful in itself. Looking at it is an experience itself in the medium its designed to be enjoyed. Rather than something which simply refers back to a piece of art made in a different format.
All the other defensive shit you mentioned I don't care about I dont particularly follow or "worship" artists, it's the difference between direct engagement and weird obsessive fandom
Absolute mindlet. There are companies exclusively dedicated to designing, for example, a 3d figure of a character (pop culture or original), based on "traditional" artistic concepts, to be looked at.
You remind me of the kind of person who genuinely has no idea what art actually is, and thinks modern art is "degenerate".
The weird obsessive fandom stuff I agree with, but that doesn't change the objective fact that a figure or poster etc is still art.
Oh wow you didn't mention the companies. That's exactly where I want my creativity to come from you're right I'm sure it's much more thought provoking and worthwhile then.
You remind me of the kind of person that says their favourite cartoon is just as complex and adult as Tolstoy and its perfectly healthy for them to never engage with anything grown up and real
Dawg you keep digging a deeper and deeper hole showing just how narrow your perspective is. And I went to art school, so I have an especially high tolerance for this sort of take.
?? are you saying an artist must be independent with their own personal studio etc to be valid? you know companies hire.. artists? to do their art?
I think being genuine and embracing the things that you enjoy is more mature and grown up than pretending something marketed as "for adults" is innately more complex and worthwhile.
very well played if you're a troll btw.
I mean it depends on how you define "play". Like, I still buy transformers but I dont like, bash them together or roll them arpund going "vroom", but I do take them down from the shelf and fidget with them, transforming them back and forth, and putting them in different poses to put back on the shelf and admire. Thats still "playing" but not the way a young child or sor a disabled person would I think.
I can understand them having one or two figurines that may have some deep personal meaning to them, like a character they feel a connection with, but then there's those mofos with an army of scantily clad teenage plastic girls that makes you wonder how tf they have a stable job to begin with
I 3d print my own statuettes, sand them, paint them, varnish them, and display them, just for me. I'll occationally take them down to look at them.
Upside of this is that they are uniquely mine, I put time and effort into them and they are little works of art in that way.
Downside is their physical value to anyone but me and my loved ones is zero, so unlike collectable figurines, there is no chance of selling them.
It’s a hobby like anything else. I have a pretty sizable collection. I think the actual meaning and work behind the hobby really just depends on what you’re collecting, though. For instance, my collections are just Star Wars figures, Lego, and occasional one off action figure figures of things that I think are cool, usually imports (for instance I have some Bandai elden ring and Godzilla figures). A lot of is just decoration, or in the case of Lego, I just like building them.
Like with Star Wars figures, I collect the 3.75 scale because I like to make displays and dioramas on my shelves. I think of it like a model train set in that way, it’s just fun to world build and make a little world on a shelf. I add lighting and everything. Plus, I like taking photos. I had a whole Tatooine and Jabba’s Palace display I live in a big city where there are multiple independent toy shops that sell older figures and such so it’s always fun to hop on my bike and going on a little hunt for the figures that would help bring the diorama together. Here’s a pic of my work in progress when I just started:
https://preview.redd.it/csbh86ilk95h1.jpeg?width=6000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=66058802abd3d44c2236f526cc5c93e333a2f127
And then with my Lego collection, I have a shelf that is mostly vintage Lego from the 90’s, but I do rotate them out every now and then.
The key for me is avoiding clutter. I have only a few shelves for this in my place and I make sure that each display is as clean as possible, with each individual shelf usually just featuring one item. I’m about to move in a few weeks and my plan is to just have a singular shelf in which only my favorite items are displayed and rotated out.
A lot of toy collectors don’t do that and they have the dustiest fucking places. Miss me with that. Rotate out your collectibles. Not everyone needs to see a gray base plate full of Lego clone troopers on the floor of your apartment.
My friend and I bought some special edition yoshi amiibo that was like more than 10 years ago. I think megayarn yoshi was the name, my friend's yoshi sits on a shelf in the original box collecting dust. My yoshi is fighting cookie monster during my toddlers stuffie wars.
Wow.
If you need an extra job to pay for plastic toys, then you really need to get a fucking grip. And you need to not get any more fucking toys.
60 is coming for you, whether you plan for it or not.
Focusing on his projects, like what projects.
People leave jobs to work on stuff they're passionate about.. that makes money.
Not leave your job to work on fun hobby shit
If it is a case where he does have a plan to make money from his project, well, living on the bare minimum for a while until your project is complete enough to make money off of is part of the deal. If you can’t tough it out, you shouldn’t quit your job for a personal project.
Sometimes people like a token as a reminder of a thing they love, as if they truly love it then it brings them joy to look at (plus can decorate an area nicely).
That’s why Marie Kondo’s whole clean up thing was ‘does this bring you joy’, as many times the older items no longer did for people and thus could make way for less things or for new joy items.
When I'm working steady I make 500cad a week, so about 2000cad a month. Thankfully I like with my parents, so this is more than enough. I don't really spend money outside for car insurance and my cellphone bill which together comes to about 200cad a month.
Because of my parents generosity and understanding, I've been about to accumulate a lot of money, and in turn have been able to give the people I love in my life private next-to-no interest loans that have allowed them to pay off debts and do renovation and construction projects that they otherwise wouldn't have be able to do.
