Does the word Model belong to the xDrive part of the name, the V12 part, or is it just something standalone, signifying it's as beautiful as a model is or something?
For the original E21 generation it was 2.3 litre. They did diverge from the very prosaic, logical naming system in later generations. Almost like the first names were chosen by engineers and the the marketing team took over.
There literally isn't a generation of 3 series that had fully accurate numbers

They should have never stopped doing that, and (in my opinion) they should have never started with the M-lites.
“M340 xDrive” doesn’t sound correct. 340ix is much better.
The original M635csi was the top of the line 6 series though. There was no M6 sold at the same time. Europe got the M635csi, and when BMW brought it over to to North America they badged it an M6. The only time BMW sold by an Mxxx and an Mx at the same time was very briefly when the E28 M535i and M5 existed at the same time. Before that there was only an E12 M535i, not an M5. Having an M lite and M sold at the same time was very much the exception to the rule and had happened once before BMW started putting M badges on half their models.
I swear to fuck all of this started with the ZHP E46 and the "M" badges being slapped on the first-gen X5

I know the 330Ci ZHP looked peak BMW (at least to me, it did), but it wasn’t as amazing as its reputation. I owned a standard 330Ci with a manual, all black, real head-turner, but it was just okay. I test drove the 330Ci ZHP, red exterior, manual. It was only a tiny bit better than my basic model, but it wasn’t anything to write home about.
And an x, like 530ix meant it was AWD.
They changed that to sDrive and xDrive to denote AWD or 2WD. Got used to that then they decided to throw in an extra M for no discernible reason.
as a kid - when everything clicked. Ferrari names, BMW names, mercedes names - it was beautiful. I remember the day I learned that engines actually came larger than 4L - and my jaw dropped when i realized what the 550 meant for the Ferrari 550 Maranello

Not that mercedes is any different, and they revived the 55 trim level which I don't know how to feel about.
I worked at a BMW store for like a week during covid. I had something near 20 BMW badges on my work uniform. One on my hat, one of my shirt, one on my name tag, two on my face mask, a lanyard for the mask was dotted with them, then the keys to lock boxes I had through my beltloop had a roundel on it too.
One of my coworkers had me beat because he had BMW shoes and a BMW tattoo.
early 2000s you only got the gray cluster and shift lights. No M badges in cluster til bangle butt BMWs.
E39 540i M sport only had M badges on the wheels and steering wheel. Was a very sharp car without needing to be reminded it was M sport everywhere you look.
On some cars, like the E36 M3, there were badges on the black trim on the doors, the door sill plates, and the brake calipers and resr trailing arms also had M stanps in the metal. Other M cars had them in different places too.
Just traded in my M4, or I would have went to count for the sport of it. That being said, still have my Bmw M1000RR. Went to start counting how many were on the bike, but got bored at 15 and quit looking.
I hate to say it, but this is probably a cracking great car. It looks like utter shit, and the name is moronic, but I’d drive one of these all day every day forever.

From what I have been hearing in BMW communities, apparently people thing the "M xdrive" is the different AWD system on M cars that allow you to put 100% of the power to the rear wheels.
“2027” - Model Year, “BMW” - Manufacturer, “M2” - Model, “MxDrive” - M-Specific xDrive, “Coupe” - Body Style. There is nothing new here compared to other cars in the lineup.
For the M3 and M4, it doesn't state anything about MXDrive.

Even on social media, atleast in the US they are showing different names for the M2 XDrive, and the M3/M4 XDrive.

Seems like there are several ways they are writing about it.
"BMW M2 with M xDrive" in the press release, and on the worldwide BMW social media.
What's even the point of the M badge anymore? It used to be an exclusive thing. You had to buy one of their flagships to get that and now it's just plastered all over everything.
I honestly don't even know how you define sporty anymore.
Especially with the new XDrive systems, the AWD system is very RWD biased, and can be entirely turned off to be RWD only.
Meaning it is signifantly quicker than the RWD M2 manual and Auto, but it weighs between 4-6% more.
Sporty is light. Sporty is nimble. Sporty delivers on intangibles that are feel like you're a kid on a bike skipping rocks off a pond as you coast by.
The only car BMW had in the lineup that checks sporty was the roadster.
Modern M cars are performance cars. Power over power over power...is the stuff of performance cars.
That's their floor. Anyone who would strain logic to assign them sport performance, is a marketer, a salesman or just misinformed.
Because again, performance car is their floor.
They may as well just rename the company to M at this point.. Whomever is steering their ship and making everything they sell an M is killing the brand. I feel like even 10 years ago an M was a rare sighting, now a days if you see two BMW's on the street chances are likely both of them are M something or other.
