I learned an interesting thing about He-man toys. The lore is backwards. Usually toys/action figures are made based on a lore. But He-man lore/cartoons are based on the toys. They made crazy looking toys first with no story. And then they made the cartoon and comics to sell the toys. I miss those crazy toys.
That's kinda what they did with GI Joe, too. They'd make some weird ass piece of plastic and then go to Larry Hama (who wrote the comics) and said "make this make sense."
Interesting tidbit, and you may already know it: Transformers no longer transform. They now āconvertā into their other mode. Apparently Hasbro couldnāt get the legal rights to the word ātransformā but could for āconvert.ā Itās silly, but also utterly staggering that they donāt ātransform,ā as thatās their whole thing.
Close, but it's the other way around. Trademark laws have changed so you can't just trademark a generic word anymore. "Transformer" could describe ANY toy that changes from one form to another. In order to prevent "Transformer" from becoming a genericized term like "Kleenex" or "Xerox" or "Band-Aid," Hasbro specifically changed their language.
Transformers now "convert" so that Hasbro can KEEP the trademark "Transformers."
I canāt believe people can claim ownership over words that already existed for a 1000 years. I was thinking you were going to say it was some sorta transphobia thing. Itās sad that this would be a believable scenario.
100%. They tasked Marvelās Bob Budiansky the job of creating character and lore for the 1st gen. He was my friendās uncle, so we got to see the newest toys first. It was pretty badass.
Spoiler - They killed off optimus prime because they had acquired a new line of toys and needed to sell them under the transformer insignia. Enter rodimus prime ...
yep...
Many 80s and early 90s animated shows were little other than long form commercials
Including:
Masters of the Universe
She-Ra
Transformers
Thundercats
M.A.S.K.
BraveStarr
Pound Puppies
My Little Pony
Jem
Dino Riders
etc etc
My friend group and I were into them, but I don't know many others who were. My parents gave me the option to get the T-rex set or a NES for my birthday. I chose the T-rex and played with it for a few months before losing some pieces and not really messing with it after that. Got the NES the following Christmas. As cool as that T-rex was, I should've probably just got the NES earlier lol.
Was a cool show though!
Yeah, I definitely felt some regret over that one, haha. Same, I've got the XsX and a PS5, went halfsies on the Switch 2 with my son for Christmas. I'll be gaming when I'm 90.
I got all three consoles also. I work in a nursing home. I feel bad for them. They are so so bored and have nothing to do. Their activity sessions are pretty lame. When we are getting older we will definitely still be playing video games. I had my hand X-rayed recently and the doctor told me I had arthritis in my right thumb. Yeah Iām not surprised.
yeah its a known marketing tactic, its why in many countries that supermarkets / grocery stores were either banned or pressured into taking things aimed at kids away from the checkouts.
Why in the UK that advertising regulations were tightened to combat tactics like this
I think its also why the quality of animation for years plummeted when toy companies stopped funding them (like look at 80s and early 90s animation vs late 90s to early 10s animation..
Hmm. Iād have to see a comparison. In my memory, and I know Iām probably alone on this, I felt the cartoons we were fed in our generation were crap.
Tubi has a He-Man documentary that touches on that. They were following on the success of the. Conan movie but they weren't allowed to produce kids shoes with to much violence. That's why He-Man usually just throws the bad guys into the moat or ties them up instead of hacking them into small pieces with his sword š.
And those PSA's at the end of each episode:
"Being the most powerful man in the universe isnāt all that makes He-Man such a great hero. Being strong is fine, but thereās something even better. In todayās story He-Man used something even more powerful than his muscles to beat Skeletor. Do you know what it was? If you said, āhis brain,ā you were right!"
Yeah, no, 9 year old me wanted to see He-Man dismember Mer-Man and feed him to Cringer.
Yeah, all the toy, comic, game, show and ride based movies are just cash grabs. I know it, and I'm fine with it lol. Heck, it's why they are fun.
Except battleship, that was horrible.Ā
I think that was the norm back in the day. Come up with a concept for some action figures with cool characters, then come up with the media to make kids want those action figures.
The toys came packed with comics to explain the lore, but he was more of a "Conan" style character. The cartoon ditched that for the lore we have today.
This was the case for like 90% of the toys that originated in the 80's they came up with action figure ideas first then basically made 30 minute commercials for them and called it a TV show to get around advertising regulations for kids.
Tomorrow (June 4th) is my 41st birthday, and I put the movie release day on my calendarā¦
I absolutely loved the He-Man toys growing up, and the ā87 Masters of The Universe movie is a nostalgic favorite and always will be.
OK, you've made your point.Ā Ā
I also don't like him, but since nobody can tell he's in the film I don't see any reason to miss out on a movie I've been wanting for 40 years.
Some friends and I were just saying this a few weeks ago. How does this guy keep getting roles, after tanking over and over again? Itās genuinely shocking.
It wasn't bad though. I only watched the first half so far and I'm like .. the second half must be terrible for this to have done so poorly. Also people in general don't like Leto since it came out that he's a sex pest.
A lot of casting is based on followers. If an āactorā has a lot of followers, then they will get the nod over someone of equal or more talent. Itās part of the formula now.
He is sometimes decent in stuff. Actually like Tim in the last Tron flick. I'm willing to give it the before of the doubt since he's playing a magical skeleton man.
The only really major role I remember him from is Requiem for a Dream, which is an incredible movie. Beyond that, I never really watched any of the other big movies he was in, so I could never really speak about him being a bad actor or anything.
That said, however, I was a little shocked and dismayed when I found out he was Skeletor... though mainly due to all the bad stuff people say about him. But I'm also the kind of person who can really enjoy a movie that other people pick apart for stupid reasons, just because it's fun. So I'm not too worried in the end, I guess.
Yeah that's a massiv turn-off for me too. I really can't stand the guy. It's a bit more bearable when he plays a villain, though, because then, you don't feel like empathizing with him, but still. There would have been so, so many other choices for that character.
You know what though? Ā I donāt hate it.
In not a Jared Leto fan by any stretch. Ā But that strikes me as a role he could probably do well in
And the trailer for this movie looked kind of amazing. Ā I was shocked
I'm super excited! The older movie totally messed It up, like the SMB movie back in the day.
I just want to see the characters depicted correctly. I'm curious about how Orko will be portrayed.
And, I'm not going to lie: the beefcake was always part of the draw for me and it looks like they're going to do that well. Sosume.
I sometimes wonder if I'm the only person who unironically enjoyed the Super Mario Brothers movie from the 90s lol
Bob Hoskins is fantastic (Roger Rabbit, anyone? Hook?) And there were some genuinely funny moments with the goombas. I always loved the scene where they slide down the ice tunnel. As an adaptation of the game, yeah it was disappointing. But as a movie, I'm down to watch it any time. Just crazy fun.
They did two seasons, Revelation and Revolution. Revelation imo was better, but I was incredibly happy with how much they kept all the character designed and ship designs throughout.
Mark Hammil voiced Skeletor.
Hello fellow '83, yes I saw the original movie in theaters and I'm going to support this one.
The 80s movie was doomed from the beginning. They were not given enough money to really do anything.
However Dolph Lundgren was born to play He-man and Frank Langella killed it as Skeletor.
[Masters of the Universe: 25th Anniversary | I HAVE The POWER!](https://youtu.be/ZbGvK-lgWSM?si=tWxn-psk9vs1QwKj)
Exactly! There's no He-Man without Eternia.
I'm also excited to see how they portray cringer/Battle Cat. One of my favorite characters. It's either going to be awesome or terrible. Rocket Raccoons depiction was pretty good, to be honest, so I'm hopeful.
It's best not to get too into it then. He's had a lot of flops recently (though in fairness, there could be arguments made about whether he was to blame or if the movies themselves would have been any better had they chosen someone else.)
I always try to go into movies with a completely open mind, so if you can do that too, then I commend you. Don't let negativity get in the way of what could otherwise be a really fun movie.
Iām gonna wait for it be free. Movie theater too expensive in this economy. Will watch eventually, same for the new Star Wars, MCU, and Jackson⦠basically any movie that Iād see if it were cheaper.
I work in Theatre/Cinema, I get into everything for free, if it wasn't for that I could honestly never go. Props to every person and family that goes tbh.
I get that. We got a cheap projector so we could get a ācinema experienceā without paying movie ticket prices or buying a GIANT tv.
That said, I do love the occasional visit to the movies, with all the trimmings. Itās definitely a luxury at this point, but still wonderful.
[This](https://www.google.com/search?q=thundercats+fan+made+trailer&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:45d12c49,vid:fb50GMmY5nk,st:0) is almost 20 years old. It rehashes clips from movies of that time and used after effects or something similar to put it together, but I totally thought it was real the first time I saw it and was PSYCHED!
I'm going to see it because I'm a huge fan of the hotness of Nic Galatzine. Mf'er is gorgeous. Been a fan since Red, White, & Royal Blue. Went back & watched a bunch of his stuff. He's pretty talented, good singer.
I'm building the playlists at our Cinema, MotU trailer has been the last one before the feature movie for a few months now. I've had the Chibi Merch Cups in my office for a couple of weeks now, the one's not pictured here have a cool texture to them. I personally think He-Man needs to be over the top buff rather than realistic (thank you very much Dolf Lundgren). Worried it's too microgenerational but I hope it goes well.
Just by random chance, this past Saturday, YouTube recommended a Saturday morning cartoon compilation to me, and for whatever reason I decided to watch it.
A couple things stood out to me :
1. Holy fuck do they psychologically abuse Cringer. I get that he's a fraidy-cat and all that but they're just like "maybe there'll be ghosts, Cringer! Maybe there'll be demons! Maybe Skeletor will show up!" At no point do they try to reassure him ever, or just point out that if anything goes wrong, Adam will just whip out his sword, turn into He-Man, change him into Battle-Cat, and kick everyone's ass.
2. How the fuck do the normies with Adam never clock that he's He-Man? Every single time something bad happens, Adam and Cringer dip, seconds later He-Man shows up with Battle-Cat, they save the day, they leave, and 5 seconds later, Adam and Cringer show up again, and instead of everyone making the logical conclusion and going 'waaaait a second, are you and Cringer actually He-Man and Battle-Cat?' they start harassing Adam for dipping when the shit hit the fan.
Itās going to be a family affair when we see it next week. My brother has been obsessed with this show since he was little. Heās 41. Itās going to be great
I hate modern films, they are too cgi and action oriented. Too many jump cuts and there is never enough time to let things settle and digest.
Its extremely offputting to me and I just dont enjoy them. I am literally the old man that will likely just watch the same things from his child hood until death. The art of film making has been lost imo. I will not watch this cgi snark filled slop.

Iām going for the story, of course. All joking aside I hope itās as fun as the trailers make it look! I am cautiously excited.
Maybe so. But I'm looking at his filmography and he's been in absolutely nothing of any acclaim. Bad sign for what's supposed to be a blockbuster movie.
There is such a thing as celebrity fatigue. A lot of people are really taken out of it when they see major stars in certain roles these days, because they can't see them as the character, just as the actor.
I would actually like to see more unrecognizable talent in major roles like this. Imagine if they had cast Dwayne Johnson or John Cena (just some muscular guys off the top of my head.) To me that would totally ruin it. It wouldn't be He-Man, it would be a major movie star and former wrestler dressed as He-Man.
I am the exact demographic for this movie. I grew up loving the show and playing with the toys. But that wasā¦40 years ago. I havenāt engaged with the IP for almost 90% of my life. So I find it muster the enthusiasm to actually make a night out for this.
So I do wonder who this movie is for, if itās *for me* but also not really for me.
I adored Heman, but am still experiencing residual disappointment from the original movie.Ā
Ill probably wait until it gets to streaming, honestly.Ā
At least they got the costumes right in this one.
I don't care if it's stupid as hell, I'm going! I'm also seeing it in 4DX, I've never seen a movie that way before. Oh, and you can bet I'm taking my adult money and buying all the nonsensical popcorn buckets and drink sword!
Honestly, my young sons aren't really into characters like this and neither are their friends. I don't think that little boys idolize muscled warriors as much as they once did.
Hubby and I are going to the advance fan screening tonight! š I only watched the TV show in passing when I was a kid, but hubby's pumped. It's also holding a 74% critic's score on Rotten Tomatoes right now, so that's good momentum
I had such a big collection of He-Man toys when I was a kid. They were great.
* Battle action He-Man and Skeletor - with things on their chest that would spin and show damage if you hit them
* Orko with a zip string that would make it roll around
* Moss man, with felt glued all over it
* The big dinosaur skeleton that could carry a bunch of the action figures at once
I was also He-Man for Halloween at least once.
I definitely want to see the movie, but I'll probably wait for it to be streaming.
I did enjoy Kevin Smith's *Masters of the Universe* cartoon series on Netflix though.
I was born in 1981 but I feel like the he-man stuff was before my time. It was something that older kids liked, but I was watching, like, Gummi Bears and Muppet Babies at the time.
I was not allowed to watch He-Man as a kid, it was too violent. I want to see the movie for... other reasons.
That said, I'm not sure I can take this He-Man seriously because he doesn't have the Prince Valiant haircut.
Apparently it has more in common with the recent cartoons, currently found on Netflix. I watched some so Iād wouldnāt be jarred by the story line(s).
My son is excited to see it so we're going second weekend (we don't like dealing with crowds opening weekend). I know it's going to be a CGI fest with MCU-style quips but still hoping it's enjoyable enough.
I'm more excited to see it than anything in awhile, and understand why and am not complaining, but they have noticeably redesigned the costumes especially the ladies to minimize... um... nostalgic reasons.
i have a ticket for the saturday morning show, so far iām
the only person to buy a ticket, iām just hoping that there wonāt be too many loud kids talking through it. even with its flaws iām a big fan of the 80s movie, thatās the benchmark iām holding the new movie to, which is a pretty low bar. the faithfulness to the general character design is great at least.
I bought tickets this morning. IDGAF that Leto is in this, he's just voicing a character anyways. This looks to be an action packed, goofy, nostalgia ride, and I'm here for it.
I listened yesterday to a podcast about this movie and they said that they explained why they marketed the movie to the wrong audience and why it will fail. With Sonic they did it right, that movie is watchable for everyone.. I will not see it. Never cared about He-man..
