I keep hearing the term RAT, can someone please explain what it is ?
View on Reddit #87623761

No-Fig-8614@reddit

Basically looks like a little propeller that drops from the bottom of the plane and uses the airspeed to spin it and generate enough electricity to power critical systems in the case that power generation fails.

Ram Air Turbine. Generates power in an emergency using a deployable turbine

Nomex flame-resistant material, just like race car drivers.

Exactly what I thought.. probably the final reason why.. because it looks so cool, especially in these videos in slowmo

My thoughts exactly! I feel like the neon orange should be reserved for space flight only. I mean, I get that it’s for SAR.

Why would it matter what color they wear inside a spacecraft? If they're not aboard the spacecraft, they're either dead or wearing a white space suit. And if they're dead and floating through space, are we really going to try to recover a body in space?

I’ll let the flight suit color police know.

Easier to spot people during rescue efforts. After all this is a test flight so there’s increased probability the plane does not plane properly.

Impressive machine but I’m skeptical of the long-term commercial prospects. The war with Iran will settle, at some point, and the ME3 can aggressively target the two Sunrise destinations. And Qantas itself has said to expect, at a minimum, a 20-30% increase in ticket price over the current one-stop route. You’re looking at business class prices for premium economy seats to save, at best, a couple of hours.

k_dubious@reddit

What airlines are you flying where business class is only 20-30% more than premium? Every time I book the cost difference is at least double.

You’re right about hours; it only saves about 2-3 vs. the current QF 1/2 and 3/4. But those are already highly premium routes, and I imagine they’re betting that those passengers will be willing to spend a bit extra not just for the shorter overall time, but more for the lack of hassle. Boarding and deboarding a plane is a pain in the ass, plus layovers just inherently feel like you’re wasting time, and there are plenty of people who are able to pay a 20% premium to settle into one seat and then not think about it for the next 20 hours. The question is if they’ll be willing to.

Ahh, see I disagree about the layovers part I fly (flew…) through the ME semi-regularly and having those couple hours to shower, stretch my legs, get some “real” food, etc. is such a welcome relief. And if I’m stuck paying $5,000 either way I’d much rather have the business class suite than a premium economy seat. Or if it’s closer to the $15,000+ one way for first class that puts your firmly into the top tier offerings of the ME3 and all the trappings that come with that. It just seems like there’s a small pool of people who are going to be paying these prices consistently. And with the weight restrictions Qantas can’t offset that with cargo.

it's a kangaroo, and it's because this type is developed primarily for Qantas' project sunrise. the plane has a project sunrise sticker on it, and the wing tips and engines already have Qantas logos on them.

Unusual to see the tail not painted. Presumably that’s because there will be a special livery for the delivery that Qantas doesn’t want to reveal during the test flights.
View on Reddit #87620008

agha0013@reddit

yeah, they almost always come pre-painted before they are assembled, but I suspect you're right. Winglets and engine decals are easy stuff that would likely stay that way regardless of whatever special livery they have in mind

Adjutant_Reflex_@reddit

The rudder remaining unpainted is what stood out to me. We had to watch the paint on those like a hawk for weight and balance purposes. Can’t speak to the A350 specifically, though.
