Do American parents usually plan to contribute to their children's education fund only until college and not any further?

I ask because I see reports on how American parents will contribute savings toward their children's College education fund. And of course, they pay for schooling before their kids turn 18, especially if they send their kids to private schools. But does that expectation to contribute stop at the College level? If the children want to pursue professional degrees and like Medical and Law school, is there no longer an expectation for American parents to contribute financially?
