Taking advantage of public outcry in the hope they settle to make some $$.

They are donating any proceeds.

Truly? I might’ve missed that in the article, was it mentioned in there?

How someone could revel in the destruction of someone else’s creation is beyond me, but if you’re going to do it at least know what you’re doing…
Visual Artists Rights Act of 1990
smokybbq90@reddit
I'll support the artist even though I'd never heard of this mural before it started to get painted over
Not sure what he can sue for. He was commissioned for a job on a private building, and now private building commissioned someone else to paint an ad.
jamesdukeiv@reddit
Visual Artists Rights Act (VARA) protects the artist's right to prevent the destruction of their work. If removing a mural will destroy it, the building owner cannot destroy it without obtaining a written waiver signed by the artist.

It was always just about the money.

FIFA rolled into Dallas and painted a building they don’t own? I have a hard time believing they did this. Dallas painted the building.

It’s some law from a while ago that artists who paint large public murals like this have to be notified and approve of changes. They basically own the copyright to their work even if it’s on a public building.

This is what people are missing
jamesdukeiv@reddit
I wish people would read before they comment. “Wyland sued FIFA as well as the companies that own and manage the building housing the mural.”
GoodpeopleArk@reddit
Right on!
LED_Cube@reddit
I want to support. FIFA can’t ruin our city just for one time event.
ForgottonTNT@reddit
Might catch a downvote ; but who genuinely cares about the whale mural? Also just wait a month and repaint the mural back it needed a repaint anyway
3Time4Eater3@reddit
Who genuinely cares about the FIFA mural?
ForgottonTNT@reddit
I don’t care about the fifa mural either ; but lord yall are becoming insufferable about this 30+ old mural that was fading ANYWAY 🤦🏽♂️
iheartbeto@reddit
It's important because Dallas was originally founded as a whaling community.

I've seen the fossils on the banks of the trinity river
FMLUsernameTaken@reddit
I don't even remember it. I've probably seen it and then just forgot because it wasn't remarkable and just kind of blends in with all the other ones.
If they painted over it with another artsy mural I'm pretty sure the outcry would be significantly less.
BigCut4598@reddit
Gonna get downvoted for this but the mural looked like one of those aquatic themed, cheap plastic shower curtains from the late 90s. Kinda sucks fifa painted over it but yeah.
spacedman_spiff@reddit
I quite enjoyed the mural. One of the first murals I saw when I moved here and saw it everyday on the way to work. Much has changed about downtown since then, but that was still around.
millerba213@reddit
Nothing says Dallas quite like whales.
Pripyatic@reddit
I think it’s just city enshitification. The principle of a beautiful mural being replaced by yet another ad, whether or not the mural itself was popular
Schrodinger81@reddit
No one actually cared. People just like to get outraged online. It’s a hobby.
DayLatter405@reddit
YES
3Time4Eater3@reddit
I support the artist.
