Is this a kind of mast gate?

It’s at the bottom of the mast on my Catalina 22. I think it’s for keeping the slugs from falling out of the sail track but it’s below the boom, which I find strange.

Its holds the pop-top roof after you raise it.

Yes, I have a Catalina 22 with a pop top, this is exactly it.
Pop the top up flush with the mast, and this slides up to hold it

This is the correct answer - I used to have a Catalina 22

Me too. Great boat.

Well, It is supposed to stop the gooseneck/slugs from sliding out on dinghies, when you take the main down... No idea what kind of boat this is, but if the gooseneck does not slide, it must be for something else as it serves no purpose for actually sailing, really.

It’s a Catalina 22, the gooseneck does slide, but I’ve seen this contraption on the bottom of other boats.

it' s moveable?
slideable?

Looks like it supposed to be above the boom
