PSA: Fax.Plus (Alohi) – Data residency gotcha + “no refunds” policy after provisioning

Quick heads up for anyone evaluating cloud fax services. I will state that In fairness, I didn’t check the data residency details ahead of time—that’s on me. This is more of a rant about having "a refund policy" that effectively means "no refunds"
I recently spun up a Fax.Plus (Alohi) account for a simple use case—just needed a fax number and low-volume capability.
Here’s where things went sideways:
- Data residency (EU) not clearly disclosed pre-purchase: I only found out after provisioning that data is hosted in Europe. That’s a non-starter for a lot of orgs.
- Changing residency requires a much higher-tier plan (\~$100 vs $9/month): The only option they gave was upgrading just to be able to change residency, which for our use case, is a non-starter.
- Refund policy = effectively no refunds: I requested a refund within \~30 minutes of the charge and was denied.
- Outcome: Very rigid “policy is policy” response, with no real path to resolution.
This could’ve been a non-issue with:
- clearer pre-purchase disclosure
- or a basic grace period
Instead, it turned into a dispute over a sub-$10 charge - which is honestly more about principle than cost. At this point, the time spent on the email chain probably cost them more than the charge itself. Not to mention this bit of bad press.

So you are on the 9$/month plan and want a refund of 9$?

Basically, OP didn't do his due diligence and is asking for a refund because of his negligence.
Their refund policy is strict and pretty straight forward. Fax.Plus Refund Policy: What You Need to Know Before Subscribing – Help Center

I didn't - no denying that. I am just highlighting just because there is a "refund policy", it doesn't mean there is an actual avenue for a refund.

Then stop wasting people time.

Dude. That was unnecessary

In short, yes. Again, small potatoes, but it’s about the principle, not the $9. It was literally within 15 minutes of realizing the error.
Lesson learned. You see "refund policy", it doesn't mean there is actually an avenue for a refund.

So, you want them to host a deployment for you for $9 a month, and also go ahead and move their infrastructure into your server room for that price?
neilbey@reddit (OP)
Not at all. I’m simply pointing out the absence of a “refund” policy, which essentially makes it a “no refund” policy—especially given how quickly it became clear it wouldn’t work. There was never any expectation for them to move hosting elsewhere, and that’s not the intent of the post.

It's $10. Let it go.

We are a private company. Fax.Plus works well for our company.
Regarding your argument, data residency is clearly stated on their pricing page.
