Do you hate EVs?

And yes, I'm asking this a few days after that fcking ugly Ferrari.
Like seriously, even a Toblerone looks better than it.
badhoopty@reddit
no, but i do hate the nerds who always chime into a bench racing convo with 'a tesla plaid would be faster'.
Lower_Kick268@reddit
Tbf tho a Tesla X plaid is faster than most things, and has back seats, that's a double win right there. If all you care about is the quarter mile time it's hard to beat one, literally
FutureHendrixBetter@reddit
No actual car guy is into evs we like to hear engines not a ufo
WastedAccounts@reddit
I down voted you. I'd down vote twice if I could.
badhoopty@reddit
literally you. lol.
Moreburrtitos22@reddit
Personally, I do hate EVs, their regenerative braking makes me feel carsickness and the lack of stimulus feedback (ie no vibrations, revs, typical combustion car stimulation) also bothers me a lot. It makes me fall into road hypnosis very quickly.
All that being said, my parents have an EV I bought for them that they love because they drive a max of 10 miles on a normal basis. They borrow one of my cars for long distances. I will never personally own them in their current state, but I do see their purpose
letsdocraic@reddit
I love hybrid systems, I would like EV’s more if they all didn’t have this weird sterile design of interior or putting a giant tablet everywhere possible
OldGoneMild89@reddit
It would be great if they'd tone all of that down and out in more tradional gauges, knobs, etc. If you keep the tablet, don't make it EVERYTHING
popcornfart@reddit
Keeping my fingers crossed the new Scout will stay true to their word. They promised buttons and knobs, and a range extender is nice too.
Albert14Pounds@reddit
Reddit seems so polarized like it's forgotten hybrids exist and it's only EV or ICE. I'm such a fan of my hybrid Maverick and think the drivetrain should be the default for so many cars. The eCVT is so smooth.
Yeah it's arguably "more complicated" than either choice but it's also kinda old tech at this point and well proven in the Prius. And lots of people are driving around with regular CVTs and don't give a shit about what's under the hood anyways. Hybrids are going to be key to decarbonizing our transit because even if we can get most cars on the road to be BEV there's always going to be cases where BEV doesn't make sense for the forseeable future.
Never_mind_honey@reddit
Hybrids are stepping stone. They won’t be an option forever. Ice will go eventually, along with hybrids.
ole_benny82@reddit
Also, why can you just look at a car and tell it's electric? It's like they style them all the same.
mtrbiknut@reddit
As humans we have made a race out of everything- cars, semi trucks, motorcycles, horses, dogs, each other- it's only a matter of time before there is a class or a separate sanctioning organization for EV vehicles. And with the power that they have it should be fun.
Rough_Cancel7265@reddit
Nope. I've had my fun with gas cars, sticking with EVs going forward
Old-guy64@reddit
No. But I don’t completely trust them.
I have family and friends that have and love them.
My Daughter in law’s parents drove a Tesla from KS to Florida, and it only added about two hours to the trip.
And I figure that I would be ready to stop when it was ready to charge. But I still don’t really trust the infrastructure yet.
DropGearStayHere@reddit
No. They leave more gas for me to burn. Most driving should be powered by lithium. Gasoline should be saved for those of us that enjoy burning it.
Lower_Kick268@reddit
You can always just enjoy burning power too, my Bolt is fun AF to drive, you can beat on that car harder than any ICE hatch
tnsipla@reddit
Sure, but most people who drive cars don’t actually want to drive cars- it’s a necessary appliance that they’re just using
Trogasarus@reddit
More than a honda fit
Lower_Kick268@reddit
Yeah absolutely, would gap one too in a race. My Bolt is an EUV and 0-60 is about 7 flat, in a car the size of a Scion XB, it's a quick brick
Trogasarus@reddit
I havent driven one of the new bolts. The last ev i drove were the rivians. Theres a lucid dealer about an hour from where i live, but not alot of people drive evs in my local area. What kind of mileage do you get?
DropGearStayHere@reddit
I doubt it’s as fun as my Fiat 500c Abarth! It pops and burbles like crazy and the boost surge is super dramatic and addicting air 🐌💨
Lower_Kick268@reddit
It's a lot less obnoxious than your Fiat 500 and won't be an unreliable pile of scrap after 100k miles.
More_Pineapple3585@reddit
I leased one and gave it a fair shake. Never again, the charging process is a pain in the ass (yes, I had L2 charging set up at home). I despised being a slave to that battery percentage and shackled to a charge cord any time I wanted to outdrive my range. Public charging sucks balls.
Lower_Kick268@reddit
You didn't rent an EV then, this is made up.
Correct_Payment3058@reddit
Yeah, sounds made up
Better-Credit6701@reddit
I don't hate them but I just don't have a use for one. More than happy with my car.
They don't fit everyone's needs
Lower_Kick268@reddit
They do fit everyone's needs though, the new ones get long range, and there's every category of vehicles to choose from now.
Better-Credit6701@reddit
I need to throw the top down and enjoy myself throwing it around corners on our wonderful twisty roads. Need to be able to take it on long trips. Example of a 950 mile day.
Most importantly, I don't need to buy a new car.
Correct_Payment3058@reddit
There’s no EV Miata, and there probably never will just due to the sheer size and weight of batteries required. But… 950 miles are insane and straight up unsafe to drive in a day. The safe maximum is 400-500. Anything beyond that is unsafe. And I don’t care if you’re capable of doing this or regularly do this - beyond 400 and 500 miles you’re just playing with the odds.
Lower_Kick268@reddit
You can do long trips in a Tesla just fine, they charge pretty fast, have chargers literally everywhere, use ABRP before you take your trip to figure out the fastest way to charge and get there. You can get a Tesla MS with over 400 miles of range for like $35k, that's plenty roadteipable.
MarsupialNo1278@reddit
Alot of people can't afford the wait time of charging.
Lower_Kick268@reddit
The Teslas and modern EV's don't take much longer than a gas car my guy, you can always just plug in before you go to bed wake up to full battery, or if you're on a road trip you only fill up a little at a few stops when the charging speed is at its fastest.
uninspiredclaptrap@reddit
Pretty sure the dealer who sold mine hates them. I'm guessing there's only two or three people who work at the local Subaru dealership who has any interest in EVs
tnsipla@reddit
I love EVs for other people
Gasoline is too precious a resource to waste on people who don’t enjoy burning it
TheKiddIncident@reddit
No, my Silverado EV is a great truck. Pulls like hell 10,000 lbs towing capacity, solar means it’s free to operate. What’s not to like?
But I still have a gas car for boondocking out in the desert.
doc_55lk@reddit
I don't hate EVs. I just don't care for them all that much.
I do hate how EV fanboys like to insert themselves into every discussion though.
ObviousAlias7@reddit
Nah I don't hate EV's.
But its like any of the major debates in the automotive world like 4cyl vs V8, auto vs manual, etc. After a while the arguments either way just get old
Spacekook_@reddit
I don’t have one and I can’t get behind them until they have a more reliable battery for what I need it for, I’m willing to get one if they can take some bs that I have to place on my vehicle
Inflatable90sChair@reddit
I dont hate EVs, i hate EV owners lol.
Sweet_Speech_9054@reddit
The fact that it’s an EV isn’t the reason it’s ugly. Sure, being an EV may affect its appearance but there are plenty of decent looking EVs. I hate to say it but Teslas are pretty decent looking, at least before elmo started getting involved in design work.
But EVs have some great performance features. Their wheel control far outperforms internal combustion engines (ICE) for things like traction control. They have much better packaging options. They have great off the line acceleration. The biggest issue is range, which is simple enough to solve, just make it a plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV).
TurboLover427@reddit
Not as much as I do now. The fact they are forced everywhere has earned much resentment from me.
thebigchilly@reddit
the only thing i hate about EV’s is the NA market. would love to own a BYD dolphin.
popcornfart@reddit
Not all of North America. I live in the US about half a tank of gas from the Mexican border and see cool electric cars and trucks with Mexico plates on them all the time. Always googling to figure out wtf they are. We are missing out on a lot of neat stuff.
Fun_Mastodon3230@reddit
I love all cars; practical daily drivers, sports cars, Yugos, Bentleys, classic cars, new cars. American, Asian, European…
I might not want to own or even drive all these cars lol but ever since I was a kid I have loved cars.
random_agency@reddit
That's like asking do you hate diesel gas power vehicles.
BusComprehensive271@reddit
I hate the fact that Canadian gov giving $6000 back to the ev owner of our tax money.
That-one_dude-trying@reddit
No
FrankieTheAlchemist@reddit
No, I think it’s a cool technology, I’m just not their target audience.
buffcleb@reddit
Nope... we don't have two vehicles, an outback and an f150. I drive the f150 around 2k miles a year and the premium to go electric didn't make sense for my type of driving. I fill my tank 3-4 times a year. We use the outback for 2 long trips a year of about 1200 miles each way and didn't want to deal with charging on the long trips. The outback gets around 7k miles a year total.
Down the road we'll probably get one and it will be fine. I do just about all my own maintenance and with modern cars it's really not a burden. 30 minutes to change the oil, 2 hours to do pads and rotors, etc.
Both are pretty quite when driven and have had zero warranty issues.
DELAZ1@reddit
Love them. Refuel in my garage, almost no maintenance, and instant torque. The only thing to hate is the anxiety of road tripping...so we have an ICE SUV for that.
AndyW037@reddit
I don't hate them at all. I will just never own one since none of them meet my requirements.
Hyptisx@reddit
Been a petro head most of my life but my model s has been the best daily driver purchased I’ve ever made. Has enough 0-60 to go ahead of most drivers and came with free charging for life so I’m happy with it.
Still own my project cars on the side to scratch that itch though. As long as it goes fast/fun to drive, it can run on farts for all I care.
manualsquid@reddit
I hate elon, I hate the fact that Ford made a four-door "Mustang", I hate the fact that child slave labor is what gets battery material out of the ground
I also strongly dislike when people hack a classic up to convert it to electric, when they probably won't use it for long.
I like performance EV builds that will get used, I like lessening our dependence and use of fossil fuels, I like torque and acceleration, I like innovation in the auto industry
bikesandfinance@reddit
After rebuilding the engine, cooling system, and transmission on my Cavalier, I love electric cars
Better-Credit6701@reddit
Didn't the Chevrolet Cavalier end production 15 years ago?
bikesandfinance@reddit
It’s a 2000 that decided to mix coolant with transmission fluid in the radiator then melt the rubber off the thermostat with this fun mixture which then dislodged and clogged the heater core which then overheated the engine and blew a head gasket.
Better-Credit6701@reddit
So, a 26 year old car. At least it had a good life
bikesandfinance@reddit
Yep and back on the road now
WolfThick@reddit
I like the look and feel of old school but I understand the necessity you know the first cars were electric
Johnsoon743@reddit
I feel like evs remove a lot of the fun in driving so i personally will never own one as long as i can. ( cali will somehow force it soon enough) i love working on cars and rowing gears so its pretty much everything i could careless about in one car.
A43BP@reddit
The only good looking EV is Opel Manta GSE
DELAZ1@reddit
🤨
MarsupialNo1278@reddit
Yes. But i don't hate the fact people would buy and drive them. They simply aren't for me
__slamallama__@reddit
I love them for a daily and think that most people would be better served by an EV than a combustion car if they can charge at home. For my commuting I would never go back.
I do not love them for fun driving yet, they're just too heavy right now but then again my Sunday car is a Miata so I'm really a stickler for weight in fun cars. I have zero doubt they'll be great at that too eventually.
The part that gets me excited about them is the absolutely insane pace of development and improvement they seem to have. Every couple years they seem to get better in huge leaps and bounds. In another development cycle or two they will be impossible to ignore. The latest architecture from BMW specifically seems like a giant step forward, if others can compete with that the industry may have a big shift. 400 miles of range and 400kw charging is an insane achievement at those price points.
Miller335@reddit
No but the depreciation keeps me away.
Good_Split_3749@reddit
I think most look a little odd. However I love the look of the electric Challenger. I know it was a huge flop but if we’re talking about looks alone , it’s a good looking car.
Lower_Kick268@reddit
There is no Challanger anymore
Lower_Kick268@reddit
Not at all, I love them actually, love my Bolt and my next car will probably be an EV like a Tesla M3
jd780613@reddit
No I just wish they weren’t shoved down our throats like they are the end all be all. Electric drive has its benefits. But if we all drove electric cars tomorrow it won’t do shit for the environment. Let us have our freedom of choice.
MetsIslanders@reddit
No one is shoving anything down your throat but taxes to cover all that’s being diverted by the current admin. No one is making you buy an EV, making your children dress like furries and peeing in a litter box at school or making you and your kids trans. But while people are all worked up over that nonsense, the deficit is skyrocketing, infrastructure is crumbling, taxes are increasing, inflation is destroying our buying power and other countries like China are flying past us and getting ready to take over our roles in the financial markets. That’s what’s being shoved down your throat.
OldeWorldWays@reddit
No car should have a tax subsidy to encourage people to buy it.
Upstairs-Result7401@reddit
I have nothing against EV's in the propulsion system.
What bugs me is how futuristic they are, and nothing is simple to operate.
I get it other people desire such things, but it massively disencentivies me to buy anything.
In new cars the ac/heater mixing valve is no longer a mixing valve. Its a thermostat. So every new car I have been in its usually hard to change the AC/heat levels on the fly. I have to wait till its satisfied to make any adjustments. The worst one was a Corolla I rented which would burn my eyebrows off till the car warmed up. On my DD 73 C10 as it warms up I can turn the heat down to match my desires.
The you get into giant screens which I hate, and why is every seat hard now. The new cloths they use are on point though. My 54 Chevy 210 will get those.
So with EV's you take everything I hate about new cars and ramp it up straight ramp it to 11.
The Slate truck looks to break the mold of everything I hate, and maybe something I will seriously look at. When or if I can get a managerial position, and a good bump in pay to follow. Since the version I could live with would have to have the 250 mile range battery pack. The 150 won't cut it since it would be annoying to take to go fishing to downright catastrophic. Since the charging station I would absolutely have to use. Seems to be vandalized quite often. And I am not renting a car everytime I wanna go somewhere out of town. My C10 does fine, and the 54 has a rebuilt drivetrain. Both of which will do fine on a 500 mile drive.
truisluv@reddit
I love my hybrid. I drive an electric forklift and when it broke down it just stopped. No coasting to a stop it abrubtly stopped and everything flew forward including me. Not sure if EV's do that.
SirLoinsALot03@reddit
EVs are great appliances for commuting but I'll always take an ICE as a car guy. EVs are great for many people but not for everyone.
Lewa1110@reddit
No, however I do think a lot of the people who buy EVs are fairly pretentious.
“You know an ev gives more torque than a gas motor right?” Well yeah but unless in always on a pavement road with proper weight and traction (I farm, rarely am) all I’ll do with that much torque is spin out and get stuck
“You know an EV is faster than a gas motor right?” Speed limit around me is mostly 55, why would I care?
Etc etc etc
Which-Candy7603@reddit
Nope. Different things for different needs, if I would not have to commute so much an EV would be a great daily.
LibrarianFlaky951@reddit
No
Sad-Tap3687@reddit
Not an EV fan. Can't say I hate them but they're not interesting to me. I've rented them often when traveling - they're so boring. All that said, if someone developed a cheap ($25k) EV that is a true commuter car (300 miles of range, could be a 2-seater as long as it has decent cargo capacity) then I'd buy it to drive to work. Until then, not interested. If I'm going more green/economical I'd buy a hybrid Corolla or Prius
derrendil@reddit
Do I hate EVs? Nah. Do I hate some of the people that produce EVs and some of those products? Absolutely.
Michael_mkz@reddit
Exactly nothing wrong with EVs themselves.Just like AI and other technologies, the issue isn’t the technology it’s the people behind it.
Outlier70@reddit
No
Nefarious_Turtle@reddit
No, EVs are neat. I do wish they would stop styling them like an early 2000s scifi movie, but electrical torque is nice and range capacity is getting to the point were I wouldn't feel any range anxiety for daily usage.
Still waiting on prices to come down a bit before I seriously consider one as a daily driver though. And I'll probably have a second ICE car for as long as they sell gas.
thesockmonkey86@reddit
Not at all.
I’ve driven quite a few of them and I respect them for what they are. The problem is in my opinion the United States is never gonna have the infrastructure to support widespread adoption. I also live in a condo at the moment that either has street parking or parking alongside a nearby church. The closest supercharger is 4 miles away in the wrong direction of where I usually go.
MrBojingles1989@reddit
Not at all I just wonder why they keep making them as ugly as possible.
KittiesRule1968@reddit
No, I've no reason to. I don't own one, but I've got no beef against them. Anyone that does must be incredibly insecure.
Tractorguy69@reddit
Conceptually I don’t absolutely hate them, there is some potential. The current batch however are soulless, ugly as humanely possible, certain companies are run by morally repugnant jerks, and the average owners are annoying preachy morons who cannot think beyond first order of effect. Sure they are no longer burning dead dinos, but the mining to produce the batteries, the battery fires that are uncontrollable, the excessive tire wear if they don’t use EV specific tires, the source of their electricity etc etc make it questionable of they are even close to beneficial yet. Advances such as Porsche’s e-fuel (carbon capture and expected to be reverse compatible) and efficiency improvements in ICE means they aren’t as evil as your local tesla club president needs you to believe.
ScoffingYayap@reddit
No, but I hate how most of them try to change the envelope by not having door handles or making the whole dashboard a touch screen or doing some fake marketing gimmick called Full Self Driving.
They're also not all as efficient as they claim to be. There's a ton of limitations on them. They're overly expensive. And they're not nearly as good for the environment as people believe.
ZergvProtoss@reddit
What do EVs have to do with a terrible Ferrari design? Everything Jony Ive designs is awful. Nothing new here.
-_-Orange@reddit
I hate the gigantic ones you see in North America, like the teslas and w/e that’s trying to be a full-size car or suv. It kinda defeats the purpose of it being ev
The little tiny city ev’s that are in some eu cities are the way to do it imo
JCDU@reddit
The Ferrari is not ugly because it's an EV, it's ugly because they hired a rock star designer from Apple to design it and he totally failed to actually capture what makes a Ferrari a Ferrari. If it was the new Ford or even BYD you'd say it looks fine.
I don't hate EV's, they are clearly a better solution for *most* people (especially non-car-enthusiasts) and have a lot of very good points. Car guys get weirdly defensive about EV's like they're a threat to their masculinity and honestly it's cringe inducing, grow up guys.
Elon Musk is a prick though and I wouldn't buy a car from him.
OldGoneMild89@reddit
No. And that's coming from a "car guy" that has had V8's off and on my whole life, and still currently a '13 Mustang with a Paxton supercharger.
I'm not uptight about EV's and weirdly attack them without any experience like a lot of people do. I keep saying I'm gonna own one sometime; I'm 55 and want to try out new things before I'm dead, some people get so locked in their little comfort boxes.
The upcoming Rivian R3 really has me intrigued, that might be the one.
TeamFoulmouth@reddit
52...have owned V8, and Diesel trucks my whole life..wouldnt mind grabbing 1 of those Rivians myself!
ChemistRemote7182@reddit
Not at all, EVs are fine. I don't accept them in every vehicle role but they do a lot of things well, actually I frankly consider them better than ICE automatics for home owners with regular commutes. Smoother, faster, quieter, cheaper to fuel, not maintenance free but less maintenance so time saving there.
Petrifalcon3@reddit
In theory, no. But there are plenty of specific ones that I hate (as with ICE or hybrid cars). And the high pitched whining that their electric motors make gives me a headache, so I could never own one myself.
Eschewed_Prognostic@reddit
I don't hate them. I actually really like them on the secondhand market. The short range compact city cars are perfect for most people and even the older ones still provide EV reliability. We have an early small battery i3 that only gets 45 miles of electric range (ours has the gas generator for 50miles extended range) but it's perfect for my wife's short commute and grocery runs. We charge it every 2-3 days. It's a lot of car for how cheap it was.
el-art-seam@reddit
Yes I do. Because I would hate wasting time to charge at a public charger regularly when I rent and have no charger at home or at work.
HelpfulRole1831@reddit
It’s not about hating EV’s, it’s about having them shoved down your throat without ever asking, while clearly knowing the hype around them doesn’t add up.
streamerjunkie_0909@reddit
They haven’t made one that is cool or really makes sense yet to buy, give me one with 500 miles range and a decent starting price with a clean and practical design. Otherwise will continue to buy fuel efficient cars.
TSLAog@reddit
No, I love the fact I can produce my own energy for my vehicles at home with my DIY solar setup.
The instant torque makes them pretty fun to toss around.
Solomon_knows@reddit
EV have their place. Some places they excel over ICE, some they can’t. Anyone who blankety hates EV is just ignorant or unwilling to look at them. They work perfectly well for a percentage of vehicle uses that is getting bigger every year.
ole_benny82@reddit
No, I love the idea of no gas bill. The GF has a hybrid escape and while the Ford build quality sucks, I'm very happy with the fuel economy. I have 3 vehicles, all with v8s...tired of paying for gas.
Never_mind_honey@reddit
EV’e are still in their infancy. Eventually they will get 1200km on a charge and look more appealing - right now there is a trendy electric look that separates them from ICE cars, but soon there will be no more ICE cars.
BadLarry1197@reddit
Yes.
cactusjackalope@reddit
For the daily traffic and bullshit here in the city, I prefer it. For any sort of...enjoyable driving, I'd prefer to drive something more engaging.
LoudBrick609@reddit
Not really. I'll probably own one eventually. The Silverado EV work truck with the big battery is depreciating hard, already down to 45k. At 15-20k that's a pretty compelling vehicle.
I mean the Tesla Model 3 is also not bad.
cans-of-swine@reddit
I dont hate them. I dont want one and probably will never have one, but I dont haye them.
Business_Signal2425@reddit
No, I just hate their price!
Superb-Photograph529@reddit
Nope. Love em. Save more gas for the enthusiasts.
RingOk664@reddit
Whatever floats your boat.
Estef74@reddit
I'm indifferent to them, like I don't hate shoves or brooms. It's just a utilitarian tool. There owners on the other hand tand to be far more anoying
Rare-One1047@reddit
Nahh, they're absolutely fantastic. Even my cheap EV is a blast to drive. It goes purrrRRRR from 0-60 in like 3 seconds.
guyfromthepicture@reddit
No. It's really the best type of drive train for the kind of driving I do most.
